Re: [gentoo-user] OT: Flash+nspluginwrapper versus Gnash comparisons?
On Sat, Nov 02, 2013 at 05:43:21AM -0500, Daniel Campbell wrote Have you checked to see if the sites you use have an interface for mplayer or another media player? (Assuming they are streaming services similar to Youtube) If not, it may be simpler to use nspluginwrapper. Gnash compatibility can be spotty, but is improving. If you suspect that the services that you use don't use advanced/recent Flash features, give gnash a whirl. They're streaming services like Youtube, and they're both completely Flash-dependant. The last time I used gnash, it was completely fine for basic streaming stuff, but marketing sites and tech demos and (some) Newgrounds material was borked. But that was over 3 years ago; times have certainly changed, and I'd wager for the better. :) The decision has been made for me, or let's say I made it back in May when I installed pure-64-bit. I attempted emerge -pv nspluginwrapper, and found that nspluginwrapper requires multi-lib support on amd64 installs... oops. So gnash it is. After my abortive nsplugin emerge, I did some research. It seems that gnash doesn't do sound by itself. It requires the gstreamer flag for audio functionality. That flag pulls in gstreamer and friends. I run with custom flags in make.conf. Any comments on my choice of flags? Do I need additional ebuilds loaded as well? Is it supposed to pull in 2 versions of media-libs/gstreamer? I have a lot of things installed since I have a digital camera, burn CD/DVDs and all sorts of other weird things. Here is mine. root@fireball / # wc -l /var/lib/portage/world 201 /var/lib/portage/world root@fireball / # The way I've done in the past and read others have done as well, make a backup copy of world, go through the world file and remove anything you didn't install directly for your use. If you see anything that is a lib package, odds are you don't need that in the world file because whatever needs it will pull it in as a dependency. What you can do, remove say ten entries that you didn't install yourself directly, you can just put a # in front to comment out that entry as well, then run --depclean -a to see what it shows. If you see something you use listed, add that to the world file to keep it. If not, then let it remove them. Keep doing that with whatever number you are comfy with until you get a clean world file. This could take a while. The biggest thing, don't let it remove any system packages. It shouldn't but depending on what your system requires, it could. If in doubt, use eix to see what the package is. Also, it is rare that I install anything with a specific version. I actually found one listed in my world file and removed it. No idea how or why it was there. The only exception to that, kernels. Some of those are done by version. If you see a entry with a version, may want to try to recall why because it could make that version stick and not upgrade. It's been a while since I did that. There is a command that may help with this. I've never used it and would strongly recommend backing up your world file first. There is no help or options for it that show up here. regenworld Either way, doing it manually or using that command, you should end up with a clean world file after some effort. I would guess that updates would be much easier. Most of mine work first time with no problems. Any failures are usually from the build itself. Hope that helps. Dale :-) :-)

[gentoo-user] nvidia-drivers wants static-libs, I do not.
Howdy, I recently did my weekly updates. It wanted nvidia-drivers to have the static-libs USE flag enabled so I did it. Then the video card wouldn't work when I logged out and back in because of a mismatch somewhere so I disabled static-libs and emerged it again. That fixed the problem of no GUI. Now I'm trying to finish the upgrade and get a clean output. However, it seems a package, vtk and/or opencascade, demands the static-libs USE flag for nvidia-drivers which would again break the display the next time I logout and back in. Sorry, I post the results, but it was probably no clear what I'd say! I found that the xorg.conf doesn't work. If I remove it, the X server starts good, What does that mean? You're being far too vague. Does all of KDE or Gnome or fluxbox or whatever you use work? That means, that if I remove the xorg.conf from /etc/X11 and I use /etc/init.d/xdm start, X starts. If I put a general, or personal xorg.conf, when I use /etc/init.d/xdm start I see a black screen and keyboard and mouse are dead. Hal Martin hal.martin at gmail.com writes: Michael Schmarck wrote: Alan McKinnon alan.mckinnon at gmail.com wrote: Now, onto your actual problem. It is exceptionally hard to even attempt to provide a solution unless someone else fixed the exact same problem before, as you have not provided any configuration at all and very little useful information. What would you have wanted to see? I wrote that sound works. You don't need more information. Hence your post was as much noise as mine was. That's why other people, or at least Andrey, was able to help, where as you were just a moron. Not to dig up this unpleasantness again, but there are some things I'd like to point out for future reference (for all people, including me, who will post questions with hopes of getting useful answers.) Nonetheless I shall try, so please provide the following: How nice from you, now that the problem has been solved. Yes, I'm aware that this particular problem has been solved, however I'd still like to highlight a few things about it. 1. the output of lspci as it relates to audio so we can see what hardware you have Why should that matter? After all, sound playback works (in other programs). It doesn't matter, but it's information people care about. Fine. Do you also care about the size of my shoes? It's a german 46 - and yes, I *do* think, that it is just as important. :) It helps us to do our voodoo stuff and get back to you with an answer (it's quantity over quality at this point of the answering stage.) 2. What engine does rhythmbox use? gstreamer? If so, do other gstreamer apps work correctly on your box? That was the million dollar question. Great, and now you've noticed that Totem, another GStreamer program, isn't outputting sound. Therefore, instead of just blowing off the previous poster, you could actually include that information. You mean Alan? He hasn't been helpful at all. I don't see, why such people should not be blown off. First he tried to be funny with his snide KDE remark. Then he wrote non-helpful (and as it turned out: wrong) comments about some non-existant circular dependencies. And he also failed to correctly read the gst-plugins-meta ebuild. No, he was not helpful at all. 3. With what options did you compile rhythmbox and gstreamer (if applicable)? Does not matter. Actually, it does. No, it does not. It doesn't have any USE flags that would matter there. Anyway, it's been compiled with these flags: [ebuild R ] media-sound/rhythmbox-0.11.2-r1 USE=-daap dbus -debug -doc -flac hal -ipod -keyring libnotify -lirc mad -musicbrainz python tagwriting vorbis 3,454 kB No, there's no important information. As I said, rb was able to play the file. There just wasn't any sound. Contrary to your belief that programs have the ability to read your mind Just don't assume that I'm doing that, just because you're so naive. and compile with all the flags they need to function in every foreseeable way, real world applications need flags. Oh, really? Tell news! But you know what, rb doesn't need any additional flags. And you already knew that. Posting them with your question allows for the quantity of answers to go down, while the quality of the remaining ones to improve greatly. Knowing from the beginning that you compiled GStreamer with -oss but not alsa would've helped greatly. What? I have alsa set. And -oss. But this information was not necessary, because the problem was caused by the bug that rb used to depend on gst-plugins-base and that -base used to have alsa/oss/what-not use flags. That's no longer the case. Instead applications now need to depend on gst-plugins-meta - and that's the case with rhythmbox of Gnome 2.22. 4. Lastly, this is out on left field, please confirm that rhythmbox is indeed using alsa and not oss Question 2 covers that. No, it doesn't. Yes, it does. You just deferred your answer instead of actually confirming that the rhythmbox *engine* used either ALSA or OSS. Because it doesn't matter. rb uses gst. gst may use either engine. No engine was installed. Reason: Missing dependencies (but that's rectified in rhythmbox 2.22, per what Marduk wrote). Michael Not trying to start a flame war between anywhere here, but I'm just trying to make a point. Posting information, no matter how useless it may seem to you, helps us help you. For example, No, that's not good. Only relevant information should be posted. It's no good to flood people (or supporters) with unrelated and not important information. Instead, it's good to only send important information. Again, not trying to restart any disagreements previously stemming from this topic, I'm just trying to establish a clear method for reporting problems so that we cut out all the guess work on the part

If you don't need pm-utils, you either need to a) upgrade to upower-0.99 once reverse dependencies support it and it is stabilized (this has no dependency on systemd); b) switch to upower-pm-utils despite not needing pm-utils; c) switch to systemd. Gentoo reflects that decision as magic can't happen from one day to the other; while trying to keep a fork upower-pm-utils alive as long as it can be kept working given the manpower, kernel API and so on... Here's the output you requested, Tom: dutch@gentoo ~ $ emerge --tree --unordered-display --pretend -uDNv @world These are the packages that would be merged: Calculating dependencies... done! Wow! I made it! I'm in! Just installed my first Gentoo (Phew!). Its cool! I'm up to part 2 of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook Working With Gentoo and I've managed to install a few things, namely vim, links, and xorg-server (As per the Xorg server Configuration Guide) in addition the some essential tools mentioned in the Handbook. I tried to install xfce4-meta (Xfce Configuration Guide) code: # emerge -avt xfce4-meta ... and was informed that I need to add +jpeg to my USE flags. So I did (minus the plus sign:) Then emerge said some packages are blocking each other. I tried unmerging the blocking packages as per the Handbook. but they don't seem to be installed yet, so that seems to rule out updating them. The Handbook says if two yet to be installed packages are blocking each other I should file a bug report. I don't understand bug reporting yet. I tried updating the system. Code: # emerge --update --deep world ... but I get the same meassage. Can anyone help? Heres my /etc/make.conf # These settings were set by the catalyst build script that automatically # built this stage. # Please consult /etc/make.conf.example for a more detailed example. applications using Fusion IPC. It provides streams, static sound buffers and control over any number of concurrent playbacks. Sample data is always stored in shared memory, starting a playback simply adds an entry to the playlist of the mixer thread in the master application. FusionSound currently is a module of DirectFB. The current API is fully implemented and the complete code is smaller than just the header file of DirectFB! There's a complete API Reference to learn more about FusionSound. FusionSound future plans include interfaces for hardware/software codecs, hardware gain control, device configuration and different device backends (currently OSS only). XDirectFB Rootless X Server based on DirectFB XDirectFB Screenshot XDirectFB is a rootless X Server using DirectFB windows for X11 toplevel windows. This way you can adjust the opacity of every application with your mouse wheel (while holding Meta down over a window). More details about these shortcuts can be found in the DirectFB README. Window movements are initiated by the applications or the window manager. The graphical movement is done by DirectFB using available hardware acceleration. Overlapping toplevel windows do not cause expose events, i.e. redrawing of the window contents, as they are DirectFB windows and therefore have an own surface, a.k.a. backing store. You should use the CVS version, because the last release is too old. Qt on DirectFB qt-directfb is a GPLed DirectFB port of Qt based on Qt-X11 3.2. Qingy (I've used this, it's nice enough. I mean, it's just a DM, after all, so not much to say) Qingy is a replacement of getty. Written in C, it uses DirectFB to provide a fast, nice GUI without the overhead of the X Windows System. It allows the user to log in and start the session of his choice (text console, gnome, kde, wmaker, ...). wyoDesktop wyoDesktop is an effort to create a graphical desktop environment where an ordinary user immediately feels comfortable through the use of a well designed and consistent look and feel. I know I'm very hardheaded (I have even been so evaluated by professionals in vocational assessment testing, so it's really true), but the upside is that I tend to believe that there is a solution or workaround to most problems, and I tend to go a long way towards twisting myself into a pretzel to find it (and the upside of that is that if I tie myself into a pretzel and find nothing, then there's really likely nothing to find). I understand that serious audio recording has serious problems under Linux, but I also know that many people are very interested in finding solutions. I just wonder if many of those solutions may not lie 'outside the box' at this time. It's within the realm of possibility that this could all work effectively (if not elegantly), if radical changes were made to the PC's setup, with the sole purpose of getting it working. Oh and by the way-- I noticed that both directfb and ardour (I think it was) seem to prefer Matrox cards. I've got two in the house (though only one is mine), neither in use-- a G400 and a G400Max (but the fan on the Max keeps falling off :) as I'm missing a screw I think, otherwise it's fine). Wanna discuss a trade for any old nVidia card you might have laying around? Seriously. Holly -- gentoo-user@gentoo.org mailing list
Re: [gentoo-user] Re: [SOLVED - CONCLUSION] - was 1.) Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interupt handler
Summary: For those who didn't follow up the thread, I was investigating an error message: Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler. where the computer comes to a complete freeze, the only thing that works is the power switch. The error appears only under heavy load like compiling. This is a new box Asus A8V, AMD64, 1Gb or RAM (PC3200 DDR400 Kingston RAM) and Sata 200Gb I was able to find out that Aiee is a hardware error, Intel has a nice article about it: http://resource.intel.com/telecom/support/tnotes/tnbyos/2000/tn062.htm So following this lead I was looking and trying to pin-point hardware error. It took me one week to investigate trying different solutions like: 1.) I Run memtest86 first time, got some errors, so I run the same test on individual sticks (I have 2 x 512Mb), the individual sticks passed the test without errors. I exchanged the sticks between two slots and run the memtest86 again overnight. The test completed 17-passes without any error. So I excluded Memory as a culprit. 2.) I disabled Network controller on the motherboard and installed another one on PCI bus - this eliminated possible IRQ conflict, the Sata Drive on channel-0 was sharing an IRQ with Network controller. But it didn't help. 3.) I removed the heatsink, cleaned it with 99% isopropyl alcohol and applied a thin layer of new heatsink grease. Did not help. But I still wanted to try as per Robert C. suggestion: some arctic silver compound instead. It's good for a 3-5C. drop from the regular stuff. Anyhow, I opened the box cover, and the temp. of the CPU dropped from about 40C to about 35C / 36C so I decided to follow some other leads first. 4.) I removed SATA drive and tried to install Gentoo on standard IDE drive; this would eliminate SCSI problem and/or buggy driver. Did not help, I haven't had a chance to do a complete base installation when I got the same error message: Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler. I got a lead from Francesco T. ''Sometimes memtest doesn't stress enough the hardware, see: http://people.redhat.com/dledford/memtest.html ... So it made me think again about the memory. I swapped the two sticks with the two sticks from one of my Backup Server PC2100 2x512Mb So I downloaded some linux source kernel but it needs to be modified as the Red Hat memtest.sh is looking for linux top-level directory not some linux-2.6.-something. Instead of modifying the script it is easier to just modify the kernel-source (as per Richard F help): tar -xzvf linux.tar.gz mv linux-* linux tar -czvf linux.tar.gz linux and one more thing, change the first line of the script: #!/bin/bash2 to: #!/bin/bash I run the RedHad memory test on my main server (different box 20-passes standard script setup) and it went just fine. It finished with an empty line no error as weg-page suggest: ---quote How do you know if your memory passed? Very simple. If you run that script from the command line on your computer and it completes without ever spewing a single message onto your screen, then you passed. If you get messages from diff about differences between files or any other anomolies such as that, then you failed. ---end quote- I run some compiling and did not receive any errors or kernel panic I did run the RedHat memory test on the memory stick from my backup server and it finished without spilling a single error message. So, at this point I know the problem is the memory stick I put back the original memory stick, the Sata Drive, and used the on board Network controller. I tried to run the RedHad memtest.sh it freeze with the same kernel panic: Kernel panic - not syncing: Aiee, killing interrupt handler. It appears that the test only made into fourth-round when it freeze. It did not spill any message into the screen it just freeze with the kernel panic as always. So I wasn't 100% sure that this would qualify as failed memory test: ...f you get messages from diff about differences between files or any other anomolies such as that, then you failed. But I suppose, it would qualify, you be the judge. Anyhow, I replaced the pair of stick with two new once run memtest.sh 30-passes it passed without spilling single error on the the line, clean finish. I was able to emerge kde-meta and it finished without a single hiccup. Thank you ALL for all your suggestions help, it appears another mystery has been solved. So my conclusion: Do not rely on memtest86 -- #Joseph On Sat, 2005-07-23 at 20:23 +0200, Richard Fish wrote: Joseph wrote: [...] -bash: ./memtest.sh: /bin/bash2: bad interpreter: No such file or directory On both boxes the I have bash-3.0 so what is it looking for? Are there any tools (preferred command line) to decode the MP3 (get a raw audio file, wav or something similar) and in turn to code the MP3 with the proper information? even if there are tools - don't do it. The artist/title info is in the id4 tags - you can edit them with lots of tools, even inside most players. No need to recode them. And recoding: mp3 is a lossy format. If you turn them into wavs you have not only wavs based on reduced information, you remove the stuff that makes mp3 sound 'better' than they are. If you encode them again, you are removing more information. So after such a circle the sound quality would be worse. A lot worse. Hardly bearable worse. Just say no to recoding. [gentoo-user] Laptop internal speakers no longer working after recent updates
Hi there, I have a weird problem on my Lenovo P14s laptop. Before I applied a world upgrade (based on August 22 state portage), the internal speaker of the laptop worked fine, but now its all silent, although all mixer levels are 100% and no channel is muted. Observed facts: * Connecting a HDMI tv-set produces sound over the tv-set properly * Booting Win10: Internal speakers working fine --> no hw issue * Connecting headphone via audio jack under linux - no sound. * Reverting to backup makes sound work again --> config/sw problem introduced by update * In plasma's system settings/audio tray, the Speaker output device is not shown -- only 3xHDMI (The analog speaker seems to have gone) The kernel is exactly the same as before the upgrade, didn't recompile it (sys-kernel/gentoo-sources-5.12.0) --> no kernel issue Relevant packet changes: sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20210511 -> sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20210716 dev-python/pyalsa-1.1.6-r1 = dev-python/pyalsa-1.1.6-r1 Media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.3.2-r1 -> media-libs/alsa-lib-1.2.4 Media-libs/alsa-topology-conf-1.2.3 -> media-libs/alsa-topology-conf-1.2.4 Media-libs/alsa-ucm-conf-1.2.3 -> media-libs/alsa-ucm-conf-1.2.4 Media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.2.2 = media-plugins/alsa-plugins-1.2.2 Media-sound/alsa-tools-1.2.2-r1 = media-sound/alsa-tools-1.2.2-r1 Media-sound/alsa-utils-1.2.3 -> media-sound/alsa-utils-1.2.4 Media-libs/pulseaudio-qt-1.2 = media-libs/pulseaudio-qt-1.2 Media-plugins/gst-plugins-pulse-1.16.3 = media-plugins/gst-plugins- pulse-1.16.3 Media-sound/pulseaudio-13.0-r1 = media-sound/pulseaudio-13.0-r1 Kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.20.5 -> 5.21.5 (including all dependencies) I tried downgrading linux-firmware to the old version from the backup -- did not help. I tried logging in from a completely fresh account to exclude any bad config in the local home directory -> no success. Any further ideas? Thank you for recommendation, I've never done some much cleaning as I did today. When I boot the computer I see some complain message about "jpeg" but it scroll too fast, couldn't read it. Is there a way to pause the boot process? [gentoo-user] go to a no-x console from failed X + lxde install
Since I've found no way to make the machine run X and grown tired of the chase... I'm going to keep this vm as console only and it has functioning sendmail install working on it. How to return to a console only setup? Although, I may have already screwed things up. I took a bright notion to uninstall everything with x11- in its name. Unmerged all lxde stuff too. Following that move, I ran revdep-rebuild... it said I had a consistent machine. I changed my make.conf USE= flags from X to -X so they look like this: USE="bindist gpm mbox -X -acl -alsa -cups -eds -fortran -ipv6 -kde -ldap" Removed 3 lxce pkgs from world file and made sure no other X items were in it. ran emerge -vuDNp world... and it appears emerge is wanting to start re-installing some X pkgs: How can I clean this up?
