I may not be able to answer your question, but I can explain a few things that I am taking on blind faith and its working. So, start with the Work you want to resize, and create a new object with the desired size your trying to get. then copy one into the other. Please let me know if I should create a new post. Basically, If I have a big image (a signature, black and white, about 1000 pixels wide), then insert into Word, and resize it ( to about a tenth of it's size) it looks fantastic. If I take the image, resize it in Gimp (or anything else for that matter) from 1000 to 100, it looks really bitty and blocky, and inserting to Word it remains bitty and blocky.. Why is this? [Gimp-user] Creating a new operation for GEGL
Hello developers, I'm currently working on an implementation of a bilateral filter called "Domain Transform Filter" (for someone interested, the work can be found here https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=1964921.1964964 and here http://inf.ufrgs.br/~eslgastal/DomainTransform/). Well, it turns out that we've decided to try to implement the filter in GEGL, so it would become easy to use with tools like GIMP, for example. Since GEGL is open source, I've been trying to understand the code that is used to generate new operations and understand how could I carry the filter to the platform. I've made some tests, and I figured out that the standard behavior of GEGL is to split the image in several tiles, which are usually rectangles, and process all these 'tiles' independently, even using different threads. With some inspection of the existing GEGL code is easy to, for example, make each thread processes its own tile and return the result. However, for the specific filter I'm implementing, this is not enough, since it is a recursive filter. The implementation I am using of the Domain Transform filter is a recursive one, in which each pixel will always depend on the value of the previous pixel, already processed. That said, I could only process a tile if the previous tile was already processed, which is a problem. Moreover, to generate good results, the filter must be applied several consecutive times, and each time it must be performed top->down, bottom-up, left-right and right-left, again consecutively. Since GEGL automatically divides the image into tiles and feed them to the operation, I'm not sure how is the proper way to force the filter to be executed in several steps. With all these restrictions, I'm having some difficult to find out how can I achieve that inside GEGL. I would be very grateful if someone could give me some hints or even show me a code where a recursive filter is implemented as a GEGL operation. Thank you very much, Felipe -- felipeek2 (via www.gimpusers.com/forums) ___ gimp-user-list mailing list List address:gimp-user-list@gnome.org List membership: https://mail.gnome.org/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user-list List archives: https://mail.gnome.org/archives/gimp-user-list

[Gimp-user] New to GIMP- user manual for Mac OSX
I downloaded and installed GIMP 2.8.22 from www.gimp.org/downloads/ with no problem. I'm running OSX 10.11.6 (El Capitan). I also grabbed the GIMP 2.8 User Manual install package from http://gimp.lisanet.de/Website/Download.html and successfully installed that. I gather that is supposed to be integrated with the GIMP installation rather than as a standalone. But when I open GIMP preferences, it shows that the user manual is not installed locally. And I can not find it anywhere on my startup volume. What am I doing wrong? [Gimp-user] problems with understand how to resize images properly
Thanks for your reply. I am reading through what your saying, and I cross posted this question on another site and getting a similar answer. I dont want to duplicate the work, but I need to get some kind of "simple" working solution. so I am hoping I can comment a few things and maybe drive the conversion differently and maybe something I missed will come out. I understand GIMP and probably ALL graphical software behaves similarly. and I dont expect that will change. but here is my dilema. I have a working surface of 2.42 x 1.30 to display what I am trying to do. the specification are that. and I can be smaller on the 2.42, but I have to be Razor sharp on the 1.3 measurements when I print the label. Its been mu experience, with Gimp, I can get the 1.3 nailed on the screen, and I have to fill in from 2.0 to 2.4 with a color match because scaling isnt bang on. As well, what I am capturing from multiple sources so DPI and physical size will change. and I would rather it take minutes rather then hours to do it. The part I am struggling with is your comment: Example: A 300 DPI image scaled to 1" x 1" will come out 300 pixels wide. A 150 DPI image scaled to 1" x 1" will come out 150 pixels wide half "size" of the 300 DPI one. its somewhat ODD for me to hear, that a 1 x 1 inch image, is half the size of another 1 x 1 inch image. If I was building an engine for your car, and you told me it has to 24" by 48" and I delivered you an engine that was double that, you would laugh at me, and it wouldnt fit. and I will go one further and even replicate a comment I posted elsewhere, When I created a 1" x 1" image at 300 dpi, Gimp still showed me the image on the screen with a ruler as 1" x 1", but when I pasted the object into MS Paint, it said it was 3" So, with all that whining done, let me ask this question. - I need to create an image that is 2.42 x 1.30 in size. - I know when I scale any image to 1.3 I end up with a 2.0 x 1.3 image. - I need to be able to take ANY image I want. scale it down to size - Fill in the buffer between 2.42 and 2.0 with the appropriate background color. - Paste it into "something" that will allow me to print it too a Avery label sheet. - Cut it with a knife and apply it on a surface like a tube, where the circumference of the item is 1.3" in size. - There can be no over lap. - its been suggested, that I resize the image in Word or other programs outside of Gimp, but Word or other programs dont offer the granularity or precision that Gimp does, so from my view point, its like asking me to write my resume in Excel. Do you have any suggestions ? I will be looking at Scribus tonight or Friday. But I am looking for a solution to render the above in a fairly short period of time, the Avery templates have 10 labels. and I never expect to print the same picture twice. >Hi menglor, > >The process you describe will give you images of different sizes if >the >originals have different DPI values, because when you scale an image >to >be a certain number of inches in size, the GIMP looks at the DPI >resolution of the image first, then scales the image to be X number of >pixels wide/tall based on that DPI and the physical dimensions you >specify. > >Example: A 300 DPI image scaled to 1" x 1" will come out 300 pixels >wide. Re: [Gimp-user] Microsoft on-screen keyboard doesn't work with gimp 2.8
Hello Jehan. Thanks for your e-mail and again for your time to look at my problem. I hope I have fully answered your questions below, but if you need any more information please ask. I'm not sure how you mean your explanations. Are you saying for instance that you want to use ctrl-x (with the on-screen keyboard) to cut, but you currently can't, and you have to go through the menu? When I press control-X nothing happens. As with any of the shortcut modifier keys, e.g. control, alt or shift when I use the Microsoft on-screen keyboard, so to carry out any procedure or action in gimp I have to use the gimp menu. Action: Use Microsoft on-screen keyboard. Press shortcut keys Result nothing happens. So every time I need to carry out a procedure in the gimp, such as, cut and paste a selection, or any other menu item requiring using shortcut keys, nothing happens, so to carry out any procedure or action in gimp I have to use the gimp menu. And if so, why: doesn't the on-screen keyboard appear? Is it available, but clicking control-x does not cut anything? Some more details would be useful to understand the issues. The on-screen keyboard does appear. It is available throughout using gimp but as I said before, when I use control-X, it doesn't cut anything. Nothing happens and I have use the gimp menu interface to perform any action. Reproduction steps: 1/ Select part of an image. 2/ Hit ctrl + x in the on-screen keyboard Expected result: the select piece of image should be cut. Actual result: nothing happens. Your above descriptive sequence is correct. I perfectly understand this. I hope we can find the reasons for your issue.Just explain step by step what happens on your screen as explained above. Assume that we don't know at all what you are seeing and what you are expecting (which is the actual case), especially since most of us don't have the need to use an on-screen keyboard as you do; and moreover most developers of GIMP don't even use Windows as a daily OS.So we don't really know what one who use Windows and an on-screen keyboard expects. Yes, I assume that am one of the few, if not the only gimp user working with the on-screen keyboard or a Windows 7 platform, so it is unlikely that this problem has ever risen to anybody 's notice before. In fact, I have only recently started using gimp myself. So as I explained, I am a complete newbe. However, it may be worth noting that although the gimp developers don't use Windows, I suspect the majority of gimp uses do. I opened a bug report on our side: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=790901 I can't ensure you this will be managed and fixed quickly. It depends on the schedule and priorities of the developers. It may happen today like it may take forever (sorry if that happens to be the case :-/). Thanks Jehan for helping me out. To be honest, I'm not a developer, merely in newbe using gimp for a very short time. I didn't know about the GTK+ project. It looks very exciting, might not be a programmer I don't know how to use it. With the Microsoft on-screen keyboard what appears not to be working on the simple modifier keys. Re: [Gimp-user] Microsoft on-screen keyboard doesn't work with gimp 2.8
Hello Richard, Thanks for your tests. I am using Windows 7 professional not 10. And gimp 2.8. 20. The OSK keyboard does have function keys, but you have to press FN key to review them. Also my space bar works when I enter a text field. The keyboard does have Esc key. In fact, it's the first key on my keyboard. I have not tried taking the focus from the main canvas window. But I'm not sure how that will work. I have tried one other virtual keyboard, but it seems the result is the same. If one of you guys can suggest a workaround which did not involve me in learning C basic or any other programming language, I would be very grateful. (Not meant as a sarcastic response). Spacebar does not work either, and this one's kind of critical to have when actually performing text entry. - For the Text tool specifically, its on-canvas toolbox elements work fine but general text entry has the above-mentioned problem (the lack of a responding Spacebar renders the OSK practically worthless here). - Keyboard shortcuts work normally (e.g. Ctwl+W to close active window, P to switch to Paintbrush). However, only Ctrl and/or Shift based shortcuts work as the OSK does not feature an Alt key; you cannot, for example, move between image tabs/windows with their default mappings. For a comparison, I tested the OSK in Inkscape and could not find any problems whatsoever, although the OSK does not include a row for Function keys (used to switch tools). On an aside, I noticed that when selecting certain tools via keyboard (Perspective, Scale, Shear, etc.) they 'activate' (i.e. canvas overlay and settings dialog appears) immediately and the dialog receives focus (i.e. you cannot switch off the tool using keyboard). This does not happen when selecting tools via mouse -- is that a bug? It can be worked around quickly enough by cancelling the tool's dialogue but mind that the OSK does not include an Esc key. -- Stratadrake strata_ran...@hotmail.com Numbers may not lie, but neither do they tell the whole truth.
