Evolution 1.0 impressions.

2001-12-28 Thread Ken D'Ambrosio

Hi, all. Just some stuff I thought I'd share, as I don't recall seeing
any mention of it. I've been using (or attempting to use) Evolution, on
and off, for just over a year now. A year ago, you were lucky if it got
past the splash screen. Now? It's gotten good.

Granted, the GUI-hating contingent really won't have much use for it,
but I have to give credit where credit is due: while it may appear to be
an Outlook look-alike, it is (IMHO) substantially superior: folders are
stored in ASCII (alleluia), V-folders are really, really cool (they're
dynamic, virtual folders the contents of which are based on filters --
but, unlike traditional folders, they don't remove stuff *from* other
folders. Think of the messages in a V-folder as soft links to other
messages, if you will), etc. It's reasonably stable (I've only had it
crash three or four times, and then only the compoment, not the
application -- which still exited gracefully), and so forth. There are
some features I'd still like to see, but it *IS* a 1.0 release. Bottom
line: if you're looking for a really nifty GUI-based contact
list/e-mail/calendar client, I'd definitely recommend a glance at
Evolution. I'm just amazed at how much I'm enjoying using it. I may
not like Miguel's attitude sometimes, but I do like his software.

(Note that resolving all of Evolution's dependencies for install was a
bit of a pain on a 7.2 box; this probably wouldn't hold true if Ximian
had been installed.)

I agree that Evolution has come a long way. It's getting good and it fills a nice
niche for those people who feel they can't live without OutLook.

However, I was surprised to see that 1.0 didn't support IMAPS. To me, that killed
it right there...

Assuming you mean IMAP, it supports it just fine; two of my inboxes are
IMAP, and I have no problems whatsoever. Did you perhaps miss an item
on their release notes? (Actually, that's another one of the features I
really like: I don't, off-hand, know of another tool that handles both
POP and IMAP as nicely; for example, Outlook sucks at applying filters
to IMAP (or at least I've failed thus far), and that works just fine for
Evolution.)

2001-12-28 Thread Paul Iadonisi

I think he really does mean IMAPS. It's IMAP over SSL, I believe. But,
I do seem to remember that when I first tried out 1.0 (I'm still sticking
with mutt for most of my mail reading/sending), I was able to use IMAPS.
Maybe it's because I got my prebuilt rpms from Red Hat's rawhide and I did
see something in the changelog about using libnss instead of OpenSSL or
some such mess.

2001-12-28 Thread Ken D'Ambrosio

Ah -- hadn't been aware of that particular permutation of an acronym;
gotta hit them books. Anyway, since I'm unfamiliar with IMAPS, I'm
(obviously) not an authority on it, but on the stock 1.0 (a-la Ximian)
Receiving Mail tab, when IMAP is selected, there's a Use secure
connection (SSL) checkbox, which would seem to fit the bill.

Mind you, I don't intend to start a my mail tool is cooler than yours
war; I'm just offering some commentary on a package I'd found (somewhat
surprisingly) useful.

I believe that he ment IMAPS, which is IMAP over SSL. Either way,
Evolution 1.0 does support it. I've been using Evolution for about 5
months now as my MUA of choice at work. I have to admit, I like the
way that is supports pgp-mime. Of course, I am still waiting for a
usable spell check for it ;-) Occasionally, I have to close it and
restart it, but I think that has more to do with my system than the
app itself.
