 Dears,

Oops! the slip is showing!

While all other details in my earlier posting are correct as per the
Mandd Sobhann website http://www.kalaangann.com/ the existing record
is 36 Hours [one and half day] and the Mandd Sobhann is getting set to
break it with 40 hours of Konkani Nirantari. The unwitting carry
forward of a typing error is regretted.

If you love to hear Konkani songs and see a non-stop performance, book
a ticket to Mangalore for 25 January, 2008 and book a hotel room for
that night right now. With 1,200 singers descending on the town of
Mangalore that night, it may be like the first Christmas ...No room
at the inn !

If you want to inscribe your name in stone at the venue, send crossed
DD or Cheque for Rs.25,000/- or more to MANDD SOBHANN [R] payable at
Mangalore. Contributions are exempt from Income Tax as per Section 80G
of IT Act.Further details on website or contact 0091-824-2230489 or

I did go for some of the tiatr, during the last one year or so just to catch up

Comment: I worked long enough in Government and semi-government
autonomous bodies to know how the system works. In the PWD, if one
does not wish a particular contractor to bid there are some simple
solutions 1. Disqualify his class [as for Romi writers] 2. Do not
accept his application for tender form [concept of book] 3. Accept the
application but not the completed tender [manuscript]. After that one
can, WITH ALL HONESTY, say that the particular tender was never
rejected because it was NEVER RECEIVED in the first place!

I believe that the Goa Konkani Akademi is a semi-Government autonomous
body manned by full-time government servants from the member-Secretary
downwards. Others learn such tricks fast specially when
convenient! Correct me if I am wrong. No need for you to give me the
information. We already have the record, as is available under RTI.
You bet there are gaps ...and they can be explained ;-)

You wrote: (2) Some Romi stalwarts undertook

ask this question there? All the members are expected to exercise due
diligence and have due accountability ...and perhaps even paid sitting

want to deny it now?

You wrote: Please make a

Comment: I will gladly do this for you if you can prove to me that the
Kala Academy INVITED applications from Romi script writers of Konkani
books during the period 1988 to 2005 as they did from 1972 to 1987 and
now again in 2006-07. If you want to know the list just check
the ISBN entries and the Official Gazette listing of books published
in Goa under Book Registration Act. You could even get the information
of books published in Konkani, year wise, under RTI from the Director
of printing Press for just Rs.10/- . You are a member of the GKA
Executive Committee, writer, author and reader of Konkani written in
Romi script [NOT Romi Konkani as some want to misrepresent it now a
days. Dr. Manohar Rai Sardessai wrote the same Konkani in both the
scripts. So do others who know more than one script ...though some may
write in different contexts to suit their target readership.] You can
judge the books for yourself. Use the Bangarsal as a reference of
the lowest standard for your selection. Plagiarism is not a healthy
thing for what is claimed as original writing. Some leading light ...
or was it Jyoti ?? ... was known to do such a thing in Konkani
written in Devanagri a few years ago. there will be quite a few books
that would meet the mark. Many Romi titles in Konkani have sold more
copies than their Devanagri contemporaries. May be we should ask
D'Pietro's Janya Celi to do some detective work for you.

The adage in Konkani: Dhankloli mutth sovai lakhachi. is right.

Whatever happens, I think Goanet is going to add to the already-rich

recall from this cyberspace:

* The Banana Republic: Principal Tony de Sa's description of his

... was it Teo?).

* Gonadians, though it would have been this hack's claim to fame (in
the history section, it's clear who first posted this first on one of
the top-ten most visited sites in the world, never mind if it wasn't
my own original idea) ... but now it is declared orphaned!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonadians After all, you can help

* Lusostalgia: Patrice Reimens' Dutch bias showing while describing
the saudades about the good ol days among a certain generation of

I love Rajan Parrikar's photos and his understanding of Hindustani

highlights as its cover story the Russian mafia in Morjim? (Usually,

My definition, far from accurate, tries to be more inclusivist. After
all, Adam and Eve even weren't Goans. So
Goan, n: Anyone who identifies with Goa and has the interest of the
region of the place and her people at heart. Regardless of ethnicity,
caste, community, gender, or racial differences. This category has no
easy correspondence with accidents of history or even the logic of
Portuguese conquests and land deals or treaties made with local rulers
and their feudatories in past centuries.

The point is the party itself. That is no different from what it
is in the rest of India. If they are different, let the BJP (Goa
version) give a public statement condemning Narendra Modi and
asking for action to be taken against all those responsible for
the Gujarat carnage.

Response -
How conveniently are you forgetting the fact of 23 years back genocide of
Sikhs which took place in November 1984 in which more than 4,000 Sikh men,
women and children slaughtered by Congress hooligans. In Delhi alone, 2,733
Sikhs were burned alive, butchered or beaten to death.
Women were raped while their terrified families pleaded for mercy, little or
none of which was shown by the Congress flag-bearers.
For three days and nights the killing and pillaging continued without the
police, the civil administration and the Union Congress Government who was in
power , which was then in direct charge of Delhi, lifting a finger in
admonishment. It was the Congress cadres who were behind this genocide.
Despite the constitution of innumerable high-power committees, police
investigation teams and commissions these are few small fries who have been
booked; the real culprits are still eluding the call of justice.
The reality is that there has been no political will to prosecute the culprits.
Did any Goa Congress leader condemn these killings ?

You are grossly misinterpreting my sentence. My word ,”your people” meant
people of your constituency. Don’t apply your own whimsical meanings to
everything. I know Margao is a Hindu majority constituency. So there is no

[Goanet] Horror in Paithona

2007-11-10 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar

To Goanet -

I have been taking morning drives through Goan

heinous sight in Paithona - a large wooded area
cleared for pouring concrete -

http://www.parrikar.org/images/samples/paithona-horror-02.jpg

This violence has effectively finished off the serene,
beautiful village of Paithona, and the assassins are
Chowgule Real Estate Constructions.

Go to -

Soon Sharma-ji, Mrs Taneja, Mr Sabharwal and their
brood will be strutting around in Paithona. Now if
only those Goan pests who have been living there for
ages would get lost.

I talked to some of the villagers. Apparently the
Panchayat honchos sold out for 5 lakhs rupees
and that orders also came from above. This project
has illegal written all over it.

In the woods right opposite the Chowgule atrocity
you see this ominous sign -

[Goanet] Indian Cultural practices

2007-11-10 Thread Gilbert Lawrence
Hi Cornel,

After a few lines, I stopped reading your post. If you have any class, you
would first apologize to Goan Catholics for your statement: Unfortunately,
this made them half-baked Hindus and half-baked Catholics --- an unfortunate
and sad legacy to this day.

It would appear that you are ignorant of the many pious Goan men and women,
including nuns and priests. Among them are two recognized near-saints - Blessed
Joseph Vaz (Patron of Goa and Apostle of Sri Lanka) and Venerable Agnelo de
Souza.

Yet beyond my dismay at your less than intelligent (being polite) comments, I
should continue my dialogue with Goanetters on the cultural differences among
Goa's populace during the 16th to 19th centuries. Goan society was / is very
unique in my perspective. The Goan Catholics combined a Western religion with
Eastern cultural Practices. The Goan Hindu (like other Hindus who interacted
with the British) combined an Indian religion with a western lifestyle.

Combining a Western (Roman Catholic) religion with Eastern cultural practices
very likely baffled the Europeans. I am not defending their puzzlement nor
attacking it. I am merely writing this to state and explain the confusing
perceptions between the two groups.

Today, in spite of widespread knowledge and education, we in the healthcare
field (in our hospital) have to go through cross-cultural training to care for
and understand the different immigrant groups to our area.

Some of the Indian cultural practices of the 16th -19th century that were
'foreign and strange' to Europeans likely were:

1. Extended and Joint family systems.
2. Caste practices, other social segregation and discrimination.
3. Arranged marriages with occasional betrothal at birth and sometimes before
birth.
4. Child marriages (girls and boys).
5. Educational and other disparities between sexes.
6. Strong reverence to and roles of deceased ancestors.
7. Strong attachment to past and perhaps irrelevant social practices.
8. Strong beliefs in superstitions, myths and legends.
9. Native approaches to healthcare and use of herbal remedies.
10. Hygienic practices including during monthly cycles.
11. Dress codes including wearing the loin cloth.
12. Native religious rituals and beliefs.

In our cross-cultural training program, the following was the definition of
Societal Culture - The integration of patterns of human behavior that includes
language, thoughts, communications, behaviors, customs, mores, beliefs, values
and institutions of different racial, ethnic, religious and / or social groups.

Sanny Vaz – Obituary

I was shocked to hear the news of the sudden passing away of
our friend and Niz Goenkar Bab Sanny Vaz in Kuwait. At first I thought someone
in his family died
and I at once thought of emailing him and comfort him. But when I read the post
slowly in detail, it struck me as a lightning that it was Sanny himself who
left us suddenly.

I pray to God that Sanny finds himself in the heavenly abode
that people like him have a God-given right to.

Today is not the day to grieve his death so much as to
celebrate his life, his achievements and the legacy he left behind for Goa
and Goans, especially for Konkani and Tiatro and Goan music. His classic
Konkani CD “Saibinnicho Tisro Segred” will always be remembered as his gifted
testament to the Konkani music lovers all over.

I had just emailed Sanny a month ago and we were always in
touch. Now who will I email in heaven? Is there such a thing as a heaven.com
website?

No one knows what is going to happen to us tomorrow. I
always think of this myself too. What will happen to me if I die? Will any of
my friends in cyberspace know about it, since they only know me by my nickname?

This world or this life is a real “fokandd” or rather a
virtual one.

Sanny, today I am sure you are in the company of great Goans
in heaven, up there in the great company of other Tiatrists or singers or great
composers like you. I have heard many songs composed by you and sung here in our
Toronto Tiatros.

In your obituary I noted that you were born in Osnimaddem,
Cuncolim. I remember this ward of Cuncolim, just next to the church across the
field next to the historic Chapel of St. Francis Xavier, where the mortal
remains of the Martyrs of Cuncolim were thrown in the well. I remember the
river that runs through
Osnimaddem/Biunsa, which we used to cross bare-feet when we walked some 10
kilometers all the way to Murida to
watch Summer Soccer Tournament games in those days (fifties). Another grandson
of this Osnimaddem ward Of Cuncolim was the celebrated cross-dresser
Tiatrist/Director
Christopher of Chris-Meena fame, who also left us years ago.

I am sure today in New Jersey for the Tiatro Adeus ,
they will salute you for your significant contribution to the Konkani stage and
all the other things that you did for Goa , Konkani and
Goan welfare.

Sanny-Bab, uprant mellche!

For once I agree with FN :-), as I have already
mentioned in my post on this topic.

If we are continually creating inequality in our
society by the absurdity of our laws and actions, then
we cannot suddenly expect an equal and just society.

I know of people, the nicest Goans one could come
across, who rent only to foreigners. We're old they
say, we don't want any hassles, we don't have the time
left in our lives to spend it at the court houses
trying to evict people.

How many times have flats been rented, never to be
seen again. Even the so-called 11 month contract is
hardly enforceable in the state of lawlessness that
currently abounds. How many times have we heard of
cases where tenants have had to be paid huge amounts
of money to vacate from the premises.

So let's not be indignant about things that are rotten
on the face of it, when things are rotten at the very
core of it. Merely expecting society to function in an
ethical fashion without giving it the judicial support
and structure to do so, results in chaos.

[Goanet] Sanny de Quepem - Goanet will miss you!!

2007-11-10 Thread Bosco - Goanet Volunteer
It was with shock and sadness that we learnt of the passing of Goanetter,
Sanny de Quepem in Kuwait on November 9, 2007. He was a thorough Goenkar -
born and bred in Goa. Living in Kuwait did not diminish his love for
everything Goan. He promoted Konkani, Konkani Music and the tiatr. While
very talented Sanny was a very humble and down-to-earth person.

Tragically Sanny passed away the day before the Goan community in Kuwait had
set out to celebrate GOA DAY 2007.

In early 2006 Sanny released his first Music CD titled Saibinnicho Tisro
Segred. A review of the CD by Silviano Barbosa who himself produced a
Konkani CD titled Classic Goa can be found at:

A few months ago Sanny released his second music CD titled NRI - a tribute

Barbosa last month and can be found at:

2007-11-10 Thread cedrico dacosta
Sanny de Quepem...

God functions in his own strange ways...

It was sad to learn that regular writer, Sanny de Quepem is no more with
us...Surely the Goanet community has lost one of its most valuable, consistent
and prolific writers.

I highly value the time and effort this Goenkar devoted to the Goan
cause...with his regular updates on GOA!

I also appreciated and admired his sign off,...that read, ''tumcho khalto'! How
humble...just like a true Goan!

Ever since I made my debut on Goanet, Sanny had on various occassions through
his mails on Goanet and personally, had supported me in my expose of
politicians and for the fight for Goan causes.

Dear Lord, please grant this khalto Goenkar bhau a place in your paradise...

Also pray we find a fitting substitute/s to carry on the work he did for Goa!,
specially the constant writings on GOANET!

On behalf of the Goan community in Dubai, I wish to convey my heartfelt
sympathies and deep prayers to the family of Sanny and also to his near and
dear ones on Goanet/Quepem and Kuwait.

Regards

With deepest sympathy for Sanny's thus prematurely bereaved family, I pray

[Goanet] Goa's health: HERALD(Goa), Nov 11, 2007

2007-11-10 Thread Valmiki Faleiro

GOA’S HEALTH
By Valmiki Faleiro

I have always regarded the Goa Medical College hospital (GMC) as the best
medical
facility in the State. Not because the hospital of Asia’s oldest medical
college is the best
– it could certainly be better – but because it has vast facilities under a
single roof, and a
good pool of medical talent.

GMC, admittedly, functions under severe constraints, despite at least one
distinguished
Goan surgeon having been Health Minister. The talent that Government salaries
attract,
functions without proper equipment, medicines and staff. Medical Council of
India’s
approval this week for a post-graduate (M.Ch.) course in Neurosurgery shows
that all
that GMC lacks is Government support.

GMC’s handicaps were manna to better-equipped private facilities in Manipal,
Belgaum,
and elsewhere. GMC lacks the specialties of Cardiac, Cardio-Thoracic,
Endocrinology,
Urology, Neurology, Paediatric and Plastic surgery. These needed to be provided
but,
would you believe, Government claimed to have no funds! So, the idea of
Public-Private
Partnership (PPP) crept in.

Public health had been put on the fast money track by the ever-resourceful
former
Health Minister, Dayanand Narvenkar. A young and enthusiastic Vishwajeet, the
only
son of veteran Chief Minister and present Speaker, Pratapsing Rane, succeeded
Daya.
Vishwajeet, I learn, well understands matters of money and business. I am,
however,
skeptical of this part sale of the GMC via PPP.

Government signed a deal with a Delhi ‘Consultant’ to identify a private party
for the
“super speciality block” at the public GMC, even if half the town already knew
who that
party is. My friend Digu, the Chief Minister, justifies PPP. Government
resources are
inadequate for essential or desirable infrastructure development, he says. He
also said
that selection of private partners should be transparent. Just weeks before,
when he
cited Margao’s SGPDA market as a fine example of PPP, newsmen pointed out that
while the builder raked in profits, only a few sheds were built for the public.
That does
not reflect the reality. Margao politicians had fleeced the builder, Kothari of
Bombay.

Private parties, like Kothari, are in business, not charity. That, I think, is
the core of the
PPP idea. Which Digu should know, because he too, like me, was in business.

Digu inaugurated a series of four national-level workshops on PPP, held in Goa.
D. Subbarao, Union Finance Secretary, said PPP would leverage government’s
limited
resources by private funds. Arvind Narayan, Joint Secretary, said, “Government
of the
day must not only be transparent but be seen to be transparent.”

PPP is the newest lane for swindling public money. And if you think you may in
future be
caught and crucified for selling 5,000 sq. metres of GMC land to a Delhi party,
appoint a
‘Consultant.’ The consultant will be crucified. Whoever controls government
spending is
today ‘entitled’ to a slice of it. Why do you think four experienced present
Ministers are
fighting over the Sports portfolio? Infrastructure for the 2011 National Games
due in
Goa is worth 500 crores.

Why privatize public health, which serves the rich and poor alike? And what
next? Given
the justification for GMC’s PPP, will the entire public health system of govt.
hospitals,
health centres and the Health Department itself be handed over to private,
profit-driven
business houses by our profit-driven, business-minded politicians?

Vishwajeet, the Health Minister, in fairness, demonstrated a lot of concern
over soiled
linen in public hospitals. He needn’t have made those surprise visits, had he
read Mario
Cabral e Sa, who, after another hospitalization at GMC, wrote how he was made to
sleep in a messy place of food leftovers and trash, and lie on a bed sheet
soiled and
blood stained – not in a general ward, but the GMC’s ICU !

Why, for a perfect perspective on health, Vishwajeet need not even step out of
family.
Deviya, his wife, is a GMC-graduated doc, a girl known for her heart. Her
father,
Prakash, like his father Gurudas Timblo, is a socially accepted gentleman
mineowner.
Her mother, other than being a doctor who never charged a patient, hails from
the stock
of Purshottam Quencro, the large-hearted scion of the coconut merchant family,
originally from Cortalim, that shifted to Cumbarjua on account of Portuguese
religious
persecution. As a lawyer in the mid-19th century, Quencro so successfully
fought for
rights of Goan Hindus with the crown in Lisbon, that he was made the “Barao de
Cumbarjua” and, just before his demise, the Viscount of Cumbarjua – a place,
like Divar,
very close to my heart.

TAILPIECE: I am glad Dy SP Mangaldas Dessai finally got a promotion – without
going
to the courts! (ENDS)

My dear John,

Congratulations on your e-mail.

As per information from your below e-mail.

The lease on all Church properties and Catholics institutions throughout
India are never checked, by any lawyer or Parish council.

I request each and everyone of you to ask your Parish Priest or Nun in
charge of a Catholic educationsal institution or church to please get your
lease documents checked by good lawyers and make it known to Catholics
throughout India.

Why can't Catholics throughout India know where and how large are, our
Church properties?

All this should be documented immediately.

The need of the hour for the Catholic community is more catholic educational
institutions as well as reservations in govtmt jobs and govtmt educational
institutions.

Tell me which Catholic organisation or Catholic leader is bothered about the
sorry plight of Catholics, who very often have to do the lowest paid jobs?

Best regards

Regarding Avarthanus DSouzas letter on SEZ, the part regarding different
Departments, one not knowing what the other is doing, is spot on.Seems to me
the main purpose is to avoid responsibility/accountability, make the
citizen run from pillar to post and is a handy instrument for blatent
corruption.I personally called on The CM about this Administration (If one
can call it that). I gave him concrete examples and practical suggestions
to start some sort of improvement. But the System will not change unless we
start using RTI, refuse to run around, and they be made to face the music
for ignorance, ineffeciency, wrong procedures etc. But there is an all round
defecit of competence. Consider for example transferring all birth and death
records of Margao from the Archives at Panaji. At Margao, there is no place
,so they are strewn on the ground, torn and tattered, staff new and lost as
also are many of the records. Basic essential things like power and water(
interdependent for supply) cannot be properly managed. Unless goans start
doing something positive about the present state of affairs,I would quote
George B Shaw Get what you like,or learn to like what you get!

Re: [Goanet] Waiting for Deepavali in Goa

2007-11-10 Thread Rajan P. Parrikar

To Goanet -

Based on the email feedback received on this entry,
I would like to expand on a couple of points -

1) No, I do not avoid places and events
inorder to avoid people. The bigger incentive
(to avoid) is provided by what has become to
the place itself. Case in point - Miramar. Walks
along that beach used to be one of life's great
pleasures. I grew up in the epsilon-neighborhood
of Miramar. I don't go there anymore because it is
painful to see what has become of it now - concrete
eyesores ringing the beach, ghati hawkers, human
waste, garbage and so on. The image conjured
by the physicist David Mermin comes to mind: dog
turds on a well-manicured lawn.

I would rather retain the old memories.

2) One fellow writes pompously that things
don't remain static, that we have to accept
change. This is a hackneyed truism. The
important question is, what kind of changes?
Have Indians since Independence built ANYTHING
of worth? Any village, town or city that you can
be proud of? No. Au contraire. We have
turned the better things in our colonial legacy
to sh*t. Name your city and you shall have
your evidence - Bombay, Delhi, Bangalore,
Chennai, Panjim...

This cant about accepting change as a fact of
life is bogus. We must only strive for those changes
that make life better, more bearable, more beautiful,
more enriching, in harmony with our environment,
and so on. By every measure Indians have striven
vigorously for the exact opposite. Which is why
the case of Goa is intensely sad. This was the
last pocket of the civilized life left in India.

[Goanet] Shock as govt approves Bambolim hill cutting

2007-11-10 Thread Goanet News Service

Shock as govt approves Bambolim hill cutting

PANJIM, NOV 10 - In what appears to be a volte-face, the State government
has regularised the cutting of hill slopes at Bambolim by withdrawing 'stop
work' orders and the police complaint against M/s Goan Real Estate and
Constructions Ltd (GREL).

In an order issued earlier this month, the Town and Country Planning
Department has intimated all departments concerned of the government's
decision to withdraw the 'stop work' orders at survey numbers 95/1 and 96/1
in Bambolim village.

The TCP order also states that the government has decided to withdraw the
complaint lodged by the Agassaim police under section 17-A of the Town and
Country Planning Act, 1974.

This move virtually gives a green signal to the controversial GREL's Aldeia
de Goa construction project against which the Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) and
environmentalists had fought tooth and nail for causing destruction of the
environment, particularly the hill slopes of Bambolim.

The officials from TCP have disclosed that the GREL had submitted an
application and affidavit pointing out that works undertaken at Bambolim
were prior to 1997. But section 17-A was inserted in TCP Act through an
amendment, after 1997, hence not applicable to it.

The officials further state that the government was apprised of the
application and arguments therein following which directions were issued by
the government to withdraw the police complaint and 'stop work' orders.

Meanwhile, a shell-shocked Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) over the latest
developments is chalking out a future course of action. Unwilling to
disclose plans at this juncture, Secretary of GBA Patricia Pinto said, The
best solution is to take the matter to the aam aadmi's court.

Pinto rubbished submissions made by the applicant and expressed dismay over
the government's decision to regularise the hill cutting at Bambolim.

She said: The change in land use accorded to the real estate company comes
under the purview of the Regional Plan 2001.

She further explained that RP 2001 very clearly specifies protection of hill
slopes. Therefore no permissions can be granted nor regularization be
accorded, she emphasized.

GBA fails to understand how the government and the State's TCP ministry have
been allegedly hoodwinked into lifting the restraints, she wondered.

Ridiculing the government for withdrawing the police complaint, Ms Pinto
said that since an FIR had been lodged that the police should have been
allowed to complete their investigations.

The investigations would have brought to light as to when the hill cutting
work was carried out, she said alleging that the GBA was certain that the
works were carried out recently.

And what is this constant harping on the under-valued rupee?
The rupee has appreciated at least 25 percent against several
major currencies in the past year, and is bound to appreciate
further as the Indian economy booms. The undervalued rupee
is a mixed blessing. On the positive side, it contributes to the
export boom that India has experienced in recent years. As
the rupee appreciates, Indian Goods and Servides will no longer
enjoy the advantage they have had so far in the international
marketplace. On the negative side it brings out the jealousy,
amongst those who make a living in the local economy, as
they see those who have returned from abroad able to afford
things that the locals cannot. That is life., But in the not too
distant future the disparity in incomes is bound to dissipate,
as it has already begun to do.

Bwana D'Souza,
Until recently, the US dollar was a well managed currency. It was in short
supply and thus valuable. We all know that when you buy a unit of a country's
currency, you are buying a share of that country. It is similar to buying a
share in a company. The less shares there are in the company, the more likely
they will be worth a lot.

In the past few years, the current US administration has been spending money
like drunken sailors. Worse yet is when they ran out of money, they started to
print more. Last week, communist China told the US that if it did not stop the
weakness in the US currency. China would switch its foreign exchange reserves
to other currencies. Saudi Arabia sent the same message. So did Sudan.

Inflation in the US is running at 5.1%. As you know, the US has an unique
method of measuring inflation. It does not take into account the cost of food
and petrol. Maybe this is because US residents are not concerned about those
two components. Pensioners living in the US are faced with the prospect of
losing half the purchasing power of their pensions if they live over ten years.

India on the other hand, has suddenly found its currency appreciating. In part
because its economy is expanding at a breathing taking rate and partly because
the US dollar is sinking like a stone. Indian businesses dealing with US
customers will soon feel the pain. As you have correctly pointed out, Goans
working in the gulf will be in the same situation soon. On the other hand,
Goans working in India will get wages that will soon close the gap between
their cousins working in the gulf.

Mervyn3.0
PS. The depth of the US dollar crises finally hit me yesterday. I run the
office pool for the local lotto. When I went to count the money of the people
who had paid for tickets, I found someone had cheated me. Someone had slipped
me two US 25 cent coins. Those coins were worth only 24 cents Canadian. I felt
violated. I felt depressed. And especially so because after years of me
slipping Canadian coins in the US, Americans were now (forced into?) doing the
same trick on Canadians.

[Goanet] 'No more Konkani films': Talak

'No more Konkani films': Talak

Cyril D'Cunha

Award winning film director Rajendra Talak has declared that on his own, he
will no longer produce any more Konkani films in future. Talak said that he
had yet to recover the money spent on producing the National Award winning
Konkani film 'Aleesha', which was in the region of over Rs. 60 lakhs. He
also said that he had spent nearly Rs. 1.30 crores on producing different
films, and has only recovered 50% of the amount so far.

He blamed the bureaucrats for recovery of the money spent, as they kept the
concerned 'files' bouncing back and forth among different officials. He,
however, made an impassioned appeal to others to come forward in producing
Konkani films and assured that he would be with them if the Government
denies any assistance as per the scheme, provided they make a good film and
win a national award. In this respect, he would meet Chief Minister Digambar
Kamat to see that the matter of grants is expedited. He requested his
detractors to concentrate more on film making, rather than making
allegations and creating a confusion regarding the scheme, which is very
transparent and result-oriented.

Talak has successfully made the Konkani tele-film 'Shitu', the bilingual
film 'Antarnad' in Konkani and 'Savelee' in Marathi, for which he won many

[Goanet] Anarchy in administration in Goa

2007-11-10 Thread Dominic Fernandes
Dear Goa netters,

Have you ever thought how power and water situation has been
deteoriting in the state of Goa since 2004.

When Mr. Parrikar was at helm of affairs in Goa, the power and water
was assumed commodities and we never faced any problems wrt its
availability. But ever since, Mr. Rane's and then Mr. Digamber Kamat's
Government has come to power, the basic commodities have become
uncertain.

I can understand my Hindu friend's plight when water and power were
missing on the very day of Diwali this year.

Our power minister and Chief Minister blamed failure of main
transformer due to lightning on eve of Diwali. But I hope they are
aware that every transformer and every electrical installation at sub
station is protected against lightning and it is near impossibility
that a transformer or for that matter any electrical equipment at a
well protected sub stations are damaged by lightning.

The inner story is that the frequent power failures is due to
duplicate spares purchased by the power department under the
ministership of Digubab and now presently our prince of Darkness Mr.
Alexio. Ground level staff of electricity department will vouch for
this. Even increased accident figures with department personnel will
prove it.

I challenge the likes of Mr. Floriano Lobo to take up this issue with
the Government and give respite to much taunted 'Aam Admi'.

Regards

Re: [Goanet] Elvis Goes troupe to be Goa's contribution to the Guinness record attempt.

Dear Joe,

Just great to have the links handy ... Roselind mhojea mogachea!

The Mandd Sobhann also organises a dance competition for a dance form
known as BAILA in which the audience/spectators can participate along
side the performing troupes at the end . while the judges finalise
the results. Seems a lot like a cross between our FUGDDI and KUNBI
dances. I am sure the youth in Goa's colleges and HSS could learn a
bit from this. The MANDDO is good for the grown ups. Baila may be the
thing for the youth. Kingfisher has sponsorred Baila for the Good
Times in Mangalore or home ground. Vijay can also do it in the land of
his god Mahalsa at Mardol- Goa.

There is a little Baila in Roselind, mhojea mogachea!

Mog asundi.

Re: [Goanet] I found JoeGoaUK's photo revolting

2007-11-10 Thread Carvalho

The man publicly defecating. Near the river while
people look on as if this was par for the course. I
was revolted. I felt my stomach churning, first with
disgust then with anger, filling up with revulsion.
Even as I write this, I feel like I'm going to throw
up. So visceral and poignant is my disgust. And
suddenly I understand Rajan's anger, which in my
intellectual outrage at his writings, I've been
calling xenophobia for sometime now.

This is what has happened to our Goa. This pristine
beauty, admired, respected and envied by the world.
This disgusting filth sullies it with the contents of
his bowels. Goans would hang themselves first before
defecating in public like that. Even those of us, like
the Kunnbis and the Gawdas who don't have access to
public toilets would be prudent enough to do their
business in private.

This is the indignity that Goans now have to live
with, while we tell ourselves that everyone and anyone
can make Goa their home because afterall in 1961, we
became part of India.

Excuse, while I throw up.

[Goanet] Goa Govt. bends over for a kick on the rump: Aldeia de Goa

2007-11-10 Thread Miguel Braganza
 Dear Goykars,

One would believe that the Goa Government had some sense of shame. The
reality stands in a stark contrast. Last Boxer's Day [26 December,
2006], the people of Goa led by the GBA were at the beautiful Bambolim
Beach to stop the rape of Goa by GREL's henchmen, rippers and dozers.
It was the Rane-led regime that had to eat humble pie soon after it
realised that this was not a Night out with the Builders' lobby that
could be undone by an i-Pill. The police posted in large numbers to
prevent the people of Goa from entering the GREL purchased properties
was no protection at all. The Regional Plan 2011 had to be revoked.

While the new Regional Plan 2021 is being re-worked, the Digamber-led
Goa Government is taking the same road to its destruction. Perhaps,
it is emboldened by the overwhelming vote of the Shaxttikars in
favour of Francisco Sardinha. It is time for a re-think.

The case against Aldeia de Goa's rape of Bambolim hill and the
river-front is the only case that the Goa Bachao Abhiyan is fighting
legally so as to save the people of Goa the effort of coming to the
strets every time. Looks like the People's Court will have to be
convened once again. The Congress-led government better prepare for a
very warm December if it does not respect the will of the Goan people.
It is going to feel the heat of the BJP + Utth Goenkara + UGDP with
the incognito Congress lackeys on board to lower the flame. The GBA
has consciously remained non-political ... and ALWAYS with the people
. I am sure that the Vicente Xavier Verodiano Award will help
boost its spirit and its cash component to fund the expenditure of
obtaining documents and organising action with people's participation.
So be it.

Mog asundi.

Shock as govt approves Bambolim hill cutting
BY HERALD REPORTER
PANJIM, NOV 10 — In what appears to be a volte-face, the State
government has regularised the cutting of hill slopes at Bambolim by
withdrawing 'stop work' orders and the police complaint against M/s
Goan Real Estate and Constructions Ltd (GREL).
In an order issued earlier this month, the Town and Country Planning
Department has intimated all departments concerned of the government's
decision to withdraw the 'stop work' orders at survey numbers 95/1 and
96/1 in Bambolim village.
The TCP order also states that the government has decided to withdraw
the complaint lodged by the Agassaim police under section 17-A of the
Town and Country Planning Act, 1974.
This move virtually gives a green signal to the controversial GREL's
Aldeia de Goa construction project against which the Goa Bachao
Abhiyan (GBA) and environmentalists had fought tooth and nail for
causing destruction of the environment, particularly the hill slopes
of Bambolim.
The officials from TCP have disclosed that the GREL had submitted an
application and affidavit pointing out that works undertaken at
Bambolim were prior to 1997. But section 17-A was inserted in TCP Act
through an amendment, after 1997, hence not applicable to it.
The officials further state that the government was apprised of the
application and arguments therein following which directions were
issued by the government to withdraw the police complaint and 'stop
work' orders.
Meanwhile, a shell-shocked Goa Bachao Abhiyan (GBA) over the latest
developments is chalking out a future course of action. Unwilling to
disclose plans at this juncture, Secretary of GBA Patricia Pinto said,
The best solution is to take the matter to the aam aadmi's court.
Pinto rubbished submissions made by the applicant and expressed dismay
over the government's decision to regularise the hill cutting at
Bambolim.
She said: The change in land use accorded to the real estate company
comes under the purview of the Regional Plan 2001.
She further explained that RP 2001 very clearly specifies protection
of hill slopes. Therefore no permissions can be granted nor
regularization be accorded, she emphasized.
GBA fails to understand how the government and the State's TCP
ministry have been allegedly hoodwinked into lifting the restraints,
she wondered.
Ridiculing the government for withdrawing the police complaint, Ms
Pinto said that since an FIR had been lodged that the police should
have been allowed to complete their investigations.
The investigations would have brought to light as to when the hill
cutting work was carried out, she said alleging that the GBA was
certain that the works were carried out recently.
