True. This is like the "Brahmin women" whom Amy Wax recently criticised for
going to the US, and telling them how the country should be run (after
leaving India themselves).

Re: [Goanet] Why the West is reckoning with caste bias now: Caste raises its ugly head in the USA!

2022-04-28 Thread Anita Dias
The West should not give in to idiocy like this...
The West should tell them to take a hike
No matter how well educated a person is or how intelligent- it is still
befuddling that stupidity exists.
Hindus believe in reincarnation; death is the equalizer.
I doubt there are specific animals (or worms) for reincarnated Dalits,
Brahmins etc.
So why can they not just get on with life. What and why then was the purpose of
migration?
Oh alas, stupid me---I thought it was to better one's life and the family. For
safety and security. To throw off manmade barriers.
But no---the caste system gets packed along in the baggage...
And after years, the rot in the baggage manifests itself!

[Goanet] An appeal

2022-04-28 Thread Frazer Andrade
Dear Sir/ Madam

I’m Frazer Andrade, a native Goan youth, and pharmacist by profession. I
have completed my post graduation at the Goa College of Pharmacy in 2020.
I am native to Ambajim, Margao, Goa and a parishioner of the Holy Spirit
Church in Margao.
It hurts me a lot to see our identity being sold off to others. Our
artifacts are being bought by people to whom these things are of no
relevance, other than just their materialistic value.
Looking at this, I somewhere felt that, it is my duty to care for our
ancestral wealth, and hence I began preserving anything and everything
belonging to Goa, and that formed a part of her rich heritage. I also
started collecting and preserving old DISCARDED Christian articles from
Goa, which were done away with, to make space for new modern religious
icons/statues /oratories etc.
Several of months ago, during my visit to Cuncolim, a village in South
Goa, I witnessed a family, burning old wooden religious statues from their
oratory (a traditional practice of doing away with unwanted/ damaged
sacramentals), in order to make place for modern statues. It was indeed a
heart aching experience for me where I was absolutely helpless, while I
looked at living icons of faith being turned to ashes right in front of me.
Only if I had reached the site a little early, maybe I could have saved
these sacred pieces of history for posterity.
Many a times people give away their unwanted old sacred images to churches
where they are generally discarded appropriately. I would like to humbly
request all the parishes / families across Goa, not to discard any of your
old belongings. Also if you ever come across anyone who has any old
religious articles or any other old household articles, who are wanting to
do away with them, to make place for new modern ones, please share with
them my contact details. They could hand them over to me and I promise I
shall save them and preserve them with due respect and with a grateful
heart for the sake of our future generations yet to come.
I hope that you will help me in preserving our past for the future. PLEASE
NOTE: I do not have any intensions of selling of these articles and
entering into trade of such artifacts. My only motto is to be able to
preserve these things for posterity. That is all.
I would like to acknowledge all those who have offered me a lot of the
objects I have saved and also those who have helped me in other ways to
save our past for the future. Do help me in saving whatever remains from
the past, for the future generations to witness and experience ! I strongly
feel that it is my duty as a son of Goa, to be there for her when She is in
need of me. Thank you so much!
Do share this appeal with family and friends

[Goanet] Adeus Korcho Vellu Paulo

2022-04-28 Thread Roland Francis
This very popular farewell song can be sung in many contexts. A parting of
friends gathered in summer, the departure of a bride or groom from their house
to get married, a dear householder departing for foreign shores, a young man
going to take a job far away. Whatever be the need to sing this song, the words
embrace it all.

I share this mando to mark the sudden and untimely departure of Melvyn
Fernandes. I never knew him, except for his posts on Goanet, but I could sense
a kindly person, who loved to communicate and give his time to those around
him. If that be true than this ageless mando encompasses his memory with its
own loving lyrics and aids Melvyn’s transition in a manner that soothes those
of us who hear it.

Hope it helps his wife Rose in her grief.

[Goanet] SOCIAL WELFARE SCHEMES MUST BE APOLITICAL

2022-04-28 Thread Aires Rodrigues
Government Social Welfare schemes are meant to benefit the truly poor and
needy while not being misconstrued as largesse of the political party in
power.

In 2001 when the Dayanand Social Security Scheme (DSSS) was launched, very
high-handedly the application forms were available only with Ministers and
ruling MLAs who started distributing them on their birthdays. As this was a
public scheme, I was constrained to immediately move the High Court which
directed that the application forms be made available to the public at the
offices of all the Mamlatdars.

It is imperative that the certifying of eligibility for social welfare
schemes should be by revenue authorities and not the MLA or MP. It is on
account of this that hundreds of fraudulent and ineligible persons have
managed to get themselves enrolled as beneficiaries of schemes they were
not entitled to.

It is also imperative that all payments to the needy are unfailingly made
monthly and the applicants do not have to wait for months to receive their
much needed benefits. It would be prudent that the government should not
launch new schemes unless it first has the finances to be able to regularly
pay the beneficiaries of existing schemes.

[Goanet] Lordiana And Egyptian Family Values

2022-04-28 Thread Roland Francis
Everyone knows that in Egypt bellydancing is not an art form practiced in seedy
bars or nightclubs alone. It is mainstream. At weddings, older matrons and
younger beauties think nothing of rising from their seats to perform the
sexiest belly dance contortions with revealing dresses propping dance movements.

Therefore it’s a big surprise when the government in Cairo halts a bellydance
by Brazilian dancer Lordiana who has seemed to captivate Egyptian audiences
with her slinky style outdoing the homegrown variety. Who wouldn’t appreciate a
complete outsider beating local talent. The Egyptian Government of course,
using Family Values as a reason to control the social setting

Wedding Vibes - Performance 08/01/2021 - Lurdiana Bellydancer
https://youtu.be/PwKdnexyuck

From the BBC
Human rights groups have criticised an Egyptian court for jailing two popular
singers over a video they made with a Brazilian belly dancer.
In the clip, they are seen lip-synching and smiling as the dancer, in a long
dress and jacket, performs her moves.
The video was a YouTube hit in 2020 and has clocked up millions of views.
But the court in Alexandria found the men guilty of "violating family values"
in what is being seen as part of a wider crackdown on artistic expression.

They were also convicted of profiting from the video starring the dancer
Lordiana, who has become well-known in Egypt for her slinky moves.
The singers - Hamo Beeka and Omar Kamal - were sentenced to a year in prison
and fined 10,000 Egyptian pounds ($540; £435). If they pay the same amount on
top as a fee, they can have their jail terms suspended.
Human Rights Watch says Egypt is increasingly relying on what it calls "abusive
and ill-defined family values" to exert control over social media.
It is calling for cybercrime law articles that it says criminalise free
expression to be repealed.
At least a dozen young women acting as social media influencers have been
accused of violating the law, with courts giving them hefty fines and sentences
of up to five years in jail.
Female TikTok star jailed for three years in Egypt
'Why was my sister jailed for dancing on TikTok?'
The latest verdict comes as part pof a larger clampdown on a relatively new
genre of low-budget, electronic music known as mahraganat, or festival music,
which is wildly popular in Egypt.
This is typically upbeat and lively, depicting stories from the everyday lives
of less well-off Egyptians.
Some mahraganat songs have drawn international attention since being used by
Egyptian director Mohamed Diab in Moon Knight, a new Marvel series.
However, the state-run Musicians' Syndicate has banned a number of mahraganat
singers, including Mr Kamal, which prevents them from legally performing in
public.
Since President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi took office, the syndicate has
increasingly taken on a role censuring what it considers to be morality
violations.
In Mr Kamal's case, it was pointed out that he had used words such as "alcohol"
and "hashish".
Human rights activists argue that restrictions on freedom of speech due to
public morals should be proportionate, non-discriminatory and clearly defined.

[Goanet] Blackmail

2022-04-28 Thread patrice riemens
 Hi Roland et all,
Thank you Roland for reminding me of 'the other side to the story'. 'Me'
rather than 'us', because most Goanet readers at least those outside the 'West'
are less engulfed by the ... Western viewpoint.
This said I find the aggression of Russia/Putin (not exactly the same I think)
against Ukraine totally objectionable, but I would like 'the West' (esp US
), while helping Ukraine, to tone down their rhetoric, which is completely
unhelpful.
 Ciao Ciao, p+7D!

[Goanet] Who Reads GOANET & With What Results

2022-04-28 Thread Adolfo Mascarenhas
Every issues of Goanet carries one or two articles by this ADVOCATE. The
Subject Matter is Always in CAPSso one loses sense as to what is
important and what is trival like the pot holes near the bus stand Some are
even addressed to the Chief Justice, the Governor etc etc.No doubt some of
his items of concern are Genuine like Corruption etc.
I am wondering in writing
First Does the Chief Minister, or for that Matter Prime Minister read Goa
net to be informed .
Secondly My attention was drawn to the fact that a young Goan girl and her
White American decided to draw placards ...saying the wanted Hilary
Clinton to be the next President ..The US was not ready for it ...The small
girls demonstrated that they could be bold and militant but change will
eventually come ...The girls will soon go to High School, and has done
exceptionally well ...she obviously made her point and went on with her
normal life Has not made up her mind whether she wants to be a bra
scientist or pursue a musical career. In the same way it is Upiopian to
expect Goaland to be corruption Free
Thirdly: If I want to bring change its best to bounce ideas with friends
and neighbours and then take direct action address a letter to the Chairman
of the University, the Minister of education ...the results can be
amazing...you simply do not draw attention to yourself or embarass the
Minister of the Environment , or the PWD etc etc
Soon it will be MAY DAY ...A Public Holiday Sommunist and Cathholic
Countries will be United ...St Josephs is a Patron Saint of Workers,
Carpenters etc

So PEACE and Good Will ..I hope that this email will not bounce back
