Hi Sudhir,

Since you have brought up the subject of FUD, I'd appreciate it if you
would clarify some aspects of OpenLX. This would be of immense benefit
to both you and the community, since we can then lay the question of
whether OpenLX is FOSS or proprietary to rest once and for all.

Queries inline...

Many people have their own hidden agenda and hence their FUD. See it
 for yourself.

On your web site it states that OpenLX is the ``First Enterprise Grade
GPL Linux from India''. In this line does the word ``GPL'' refer to
the GNU General Public Licence? If it doesn't, please ignore the rest
of this e-mail, just clarify what GPL refers to.

On the other hand, if the GPL on that page actually refers to the GNU
General Public Licence, then I have strong doubts whether your complete
distribution is covered under that tag. Please note that software does
not become ``GPL'', nor ``Free software'', nor ``Open source'' just by
virtue of running on a Linux kernel. Each package has its own licence
associated with it, whether proprietary or FOSS. I would guess that
it's nearly impossible to make a usable Linux distribution using only
GPL software -- you'd have to exclude packages like X, Apache, Perl and
PostgreSQL for a start.

However, even if you (mistakenly) refer to all FOSS packages as GPL, if
you have included any proprietary packages or software at all in the
distribution, you would be committing an error by calling the
distribution ``GPL'' or ``Free software'' or ``Open source'' or
``FOSS'' or ``FLOSS'' or any other name that gives the impression that
the distribution is a FOSS distribution. This list of packages and
software includes any proprietary drivers for cards/chipsets, Flash
player from Ad*be and any other software included in the distribution
that is not released under a licence approved either by FSF or OSI.

Would appreciate your clarifications so that we can end the FUD and get
a true and clear picture. Specifically, the questions that I'm
requesting you to answer are:

1. Does the GPL in the OpenLX tag line refer to the GNU General Public
Licence?

2. Are all the packages in the OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 released under
the GPL?

3. Are all the packages in the OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 released under a
FOSS licence (i.e. one approved by the FSF or the OSI, or both).

4. If not, what are the packages in the OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 that
are not released under a FOSS licence?

5. If OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 contains any non-GPL packages, will you
remove the GPL from the tag line referred to above?

6. If OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 contains any proprietary software, will
you avoid referring to it as ``GPL'', ``Open source'', ``Free
software'', ``FLOSS'' and ``FOSS'' or any word or phrase that gives the
impression that OpenLX Desktop Edge v1.0 is a FOSS distribution? Of
course, you could continue to state that large parts of it are FOSS,
but in that case I'd suggest that you also specify that it contains
proprietary software, in the interests of completeness.

Regards,

gaurav, why would you let everyone just get away with this.

a talk at a college does not make it into a mini-conference or event.
for instance, we're not talking about intro to gpg at freed.in. we
could talk about that to college kids who wish to write love-letters
to their heart-throbs, hidden in plain view. i can think of a hundred
more topics from the vast ecosystem of foss that we could share with
them, and also tell them about the glimmering freed.in event coming up
ahead.

the more you share, the more enriched you and they get.
the more you share, the more they love foss,
the more you share, the more credibility freed.in gets.

 [rest of meaningless rant snipped]

Er, perhaps you missed the announcement about freed.in, an event that
JNU and ILUGD are organising specifically to do all the things that you
want? In fact, one of our target audiences happens to be academia and
students. The event will share gyaan, not only from ILUGD members but
from well-known people in the Indian and International FOSS
communities, at no charge at all to any of the participants! So let's
cut the cr*p about not wanting to share gyaan right away, shall we?

Of course, organising such an event takes effort, time and energy. So
one of the questions facing us is, should we, as organisers of
freed.in, spend whatever time we have making the event useful to its
audience, or should we spend 6 hours (which could have otherwise been
used for fine-tuning freed.in-related work) going to a college, and
basically talking about the same things that they would hear by
attending the event, and with lesser expertise? IMO a good event will
be of much more value to all the participants than individual talks at
individual colleges from people who are rushed for time and probably
not particularly well-prepared to talk about anything at all ad-hoc.
OTOH, if you feel that strongly about it there's nothing stopping you
from volunteering to go and talk about the spirit of freedom.

BTW, have you been taking lessons on FUD from MS by any chance? ;)

It would be better now if you make a final and formal announcement on the
list
about the event (the talks, the timings, and the venue).

Interested students from my college shall come to attend the event.

so that whole thing can be planned. Gaurav, share the experience of
recently conducted workshop at NSIT with them and I think with time on
you side this can be easily done.

Good work.

2007-09-13 Thread Angad Singh
Hi All,

As you all know, we have arranged a time slot of 2.30 PM to 5.30 PM on
Saturday for your visit to our campus.

I had telephonic conversation with Gaurav, and he told me about the
kind of seminar the ILUG has been conducting in the recent past in
colleges.

We were intimated by Gaurav that the members of ILUG would agree to
hold a seminar, we have thereby taken permission from the Head of
Department and the college administration for the same. As per which,
there is very little time in our hands and under such conditions I
request you to kindly understand and inform us if you'd want to speak
at the event and about the topics you would speak about as we need to
decide if the event would take place or not and publicize about it on
campus.
