[JAWS-Users] Say All pausing between lines

2018-03-23 Thread Orlando Enrique Fiol
Hi all. I'm using the latest builds of both Jaws 2018 and Windows 10.
Seemingly inexplicably, Say All has begun pausing between lines, even
though I have tried it both reading by sentence and by line without
pauses. It's almost as though whichever setting I choose, Say All
reads with pauses.
To attempt to remedy this, I performed a repair, then tried Say All
using the alternate user directory; it read without pauses as I
desire. I then deleted all my settings files except for my
pronunciation dictionary and voice profiles, to allow Jaws to
repopulate my settings directory. AftEr this, Say All again read
without pauses as I desire. However, after I went through the entire
settings tree, resetting everything to my preferences, the Say All
reading with pauses regardless of setting returned.
This forces me to ask if there is some hidden or obscure relationship
between how Say All pauses and another setting that appears to have
nothing to do with it. I'm inclined toward this reasoning because
when I switch to the alternate user directory or delete my settings
files, Say All behaves properly. Only after I configure my settings
does the problem return. The question is: why?
I realize that as a temporary fix, I could yet again delete my
settings and this time not change any of the defaults. But then,
punctuation, speech verbosity and so many other settings would not be
configured to my taste. As another possibility, I will test tomorrow
whether this behavior is also happening on my laptop. If it is not,
I'll try copying my settings directory from my laptop to the
problematic desktop.
What do you all think? Has anyone ever experienced this strange Say
All behavior of reading with line pauses regardless of setting?

Many thanks,

Orlando Enrique Fiol

Hi Lenny,

With the new version of Dropbox you don't need to put files in the Public
folder any more, just put them in the main DB folder. Once the file is
uploaded highlight the file you want to send, press your applications key or
Shift + F10 to open the context menu, arrow down to, Copy Dropbox Link, &
press enter. You will hear a confirmation that a Dropbox link has been
copied to the clipboard. Now here's the tricky part, the following is for
easier downloading for the recipients. When you paste the download link
into the email, the link will have a, =0, at the end of the link. Replace
the, 0, with a, 1. If you leave the, 0, the link will open a download
window on the Dropbox website making it a pain in the A** for the
recipients, but if you put a, 1, at the end the recipients will download
directly from your Dropbox folder, is the way I understand it anyways.
Happy Dropboxing with Jaws!

Re: [JAWS-Users] rar and zip app

2018-03-23 Thread Mike B.
Hi Holger,

Here's a quick set of steps on unzipping files / folders:
To unzip files or folders:

1. Highlight the file or folders you want to unzip. They can be both, .ZIP
or .RAR files or, just 1 or the other. This program has the ability to
unzip both types at the same time.

2. Press the applications / context menu key or, Shift + F10 to open the
context menu.

3. Press, the #7 on the number row above the main keyboard or, arrow down to
7Zip & press enter. The first time you use the program you might want to
arrow down the list to see what options the program has to offer.

4. A. if you are unzipping a single file / folder arrow down to, extract
here, & press enter, and all the files will be extracted to that folder, but
beware, they will be extracted as single files rather than being unzipped
into a folder. Use the, Extract To *, option to have all files go into a
folder of the same name without the, .Zip, extension.

4. B. When you are extracting multiple folders, press enter on the, Extract
To *, option. This will extract all the folders into folders of the same
name without the, .Zip, extension.

Hello, again, everyone.

I am sorry for this additional post, but I have just noticed another problem
since I updated to the latest build of Jaws 2018.

Now, whenever I try to navigate a web page, I get a "clunk" sound whenever I
encounter a link.

The "clunk" sound is anoying in and of itself, but this new feature also
seems to interfere at least somewhat with web page navigation.

I find the problem with both Firefox 52, and the latest version of Internet
Explorer.

Can anyone tell me what might have changed, and how to fix the issue?

Thanks as always!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Another Problem Since Latest Jaws 2018 Update

Hello, again, everyone.

I am sorry for this additional post, but I have just noticed another problem
since I updated to the latest build of Jaws 2018.

Now, whenever I try to navigate a web page, I get a "clunk" sound whenever I
encounter a link.

The "clunk" sound is anoying in and of itself, but this new feature also
seems to interfere at least somewhat with web page navigation.

I find the problem with both Firefox 52, and the latest version of Internet
Explorer.

Can anyone tell me what might have changed, and how to fix the issue?

Thanks as always!

Hi Holger,

Try 7Zip. this program will extract / uncompress RAR & Zip files at the
same time, & I have some short text tutorials on how to use it. It is also
very Jaws accessible.

Can you tell me how to do this?

So far, I haven't been able to find how to turn off smart navigation in
Jaws basics, quick settings, or setting center.

I'm obviously missing something here.

Mike,

Two-part answer. First, you'll find color options in the font dialog, which
you get to with either control-shift-f or control-d. both work.

Second, I've noticed the same unlikely color scheme is shown in my Word 2016
documents, but what is being printed is black on white. I keep meaning to
find out why this is, but I keep forgetting to.

Happy Dropboxing with Jaws!

free version. In the past few years I only used it twice. Once again I now

free version. In the past few years I only used it twice. Once again I now
need to send a very large file.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

Hi Mike,

Note that in Windows 8 and 10, unlike in Windows 7, when you set UAC to 0%
you stop the dialog from appearing but, instead of disabling UAC to run
everything as administrator by default as in Windows XP and prior versions,
the UAC will automatically deny these permisions for programs trying to
write, delete or modify something in a folder requiring administrator
privileges different to the one in which the executable is stored.
You can use scripts or group policies to disable UAC in Windows 10, but some
things like some UWP apps and special shell extensions will not work
properly, for a reason I don't know why.
However, when you make changes in the UAC slider and press the OK button, a
UAC confirmation will appear in a secure desktop, therefore JAWS will take a
few seconds before speaking, and it could speak nothing if you have your
current JAWS version disabled in the Ease of Access Center. When this dialog
appear, simply answer the confirmation as any other UAC dialog.
Although is less safe, you can also configure UAC to display confirmations
in a window on your user's desktop instead of a secure one, so you don't
need to wait until JAWS switches its response to the secure desktop.

Hope it helps a bit!

Re: [JAWS-Users] W10 start menu

2018-03-23 Thread Brian Lee
Hello Holger,

You might want to check out your start menu settings.

1. Use Windows key with I.

2. Tab to a list of settings, use right arrow key to "Personalization" and
press enter key.

3. Tab from the Search box to the list of settings for personalizing and
use down arrow key to "Start. Press enter key.

4. Tab to the "Show app list in Start menu" and if its status is off then
press enter key to turn on the option. It is just a toggle button that goes
between the On and Off state.

5. Tab again to the "Show recently added apps" and if you want those
showing at the top of the list that button should be in the On state. It is
also a toggle between the on and off state for the option. Use spacebar to
toggle between the two states for the button.

Take care.

Tom, here's where the Windows edit field makes life easy. For Disc Cleanup,
start typing "disc" into the field, pause, and then arrow down once. The
disc cleanup option comes up and you just press enter. To get into the disc
cleanup window, press alt-tab once. I suggest having all other programs
closed. It can take a minute or so. Once done, JAWS will start talking, and
you'll be presented with a vertical checklist of items to include in the
cleanup. Make your selections, then tab to Okay, then again to confirm.

I haven't done a defrag in a while, but I just checked that it comes up
right away in the Windows search field. Press enter and follow your
instincts.

Hello, everyone.

I apologize if this is considered to be off topic for this list, but I'm
wondering if anyone has a jaws-friendly set of instructions for doing a disk
cleanup and defrag? I'm using windows 7 with the latest build of Jaws 2018
on this Dell Lattitude laptop.

Even though my computer seems to be basically back to normal now, I'm
thinking this might be a good idea, in light of the major issues I had this
past Wednesday after doing the latest Jaws update.

It has been so long since I've done a disk cleanup and defrag, so I just
need a little refresher.

Thanks very much!

Mike, I believe this is a JAWS question. The workaround is to press JAWS
key+escape. If that doesn't work, then press alt+tab to cycle through the

Re: [JAWS-Users] Disk Cleanup And Defrag

2018-03-23 Thread Adrian Spratt
Tom, here's where the Windows edit field makes life easy. For Disc Cleanup,
start typing "disc" into the field, pause, and then arrow down once. The disc
cleanup option comes up and you just press enter. To get into the disc cleanup
window, press alt-tab once. I suggest having all other programs closed. It can
take a minute or so. Once done, JAWS will start talking, and you'll be
presented with a vertical checklist of items to include in the cleanup. Make
your selections, then tab to Okay, then again to confirm.

I haven't done a defrag in a while, but I just checked that it comes up right
away in the Windows search field. Press enter and follow your instincts.

That's unusual,
Try below commands, Make sure to run the command prompt as administrator.
Disable UAC:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v
EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Re enable UAC:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k %windir%\System32\reg.exe ADD
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v
EnableLUA /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

You need to re boot your system for that to take effect.

As long as the target computer is running a tandem build of Jaws 15,
you should be able to connect with any version you have equal to 15 or
higher.

Hi All,

I'm running Windows 7 Pro with J16 as my oldest version of Jaws installed.
I need to Tandem into an XP computer to get some information, but being that
the latest version of Jaws that XP allows, from what I understand is Jaws
15, can I Tandem into this XP computer under these circumstances? All help
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks mooy moocho.

Yes sir there still is a free version of drop box. They do offer a pro
account which is $100 a year which is 1 TB. The free version is 2 GB if
memory serves.

Is there still a free version of dropbox? A few months ago I had to wipe my
hd and reinstall windows. I went to the dropbox page and I did not see the
free version. In the past few years I only used it twice. Once again I now
need to send a very large file.

Hi, Fernando. As others have already posted, VFO is the new name for two merged
entities. However, it is actually Freedom Scientific with a new name, since it
was the purchaser.

Hi all,

I ultimately are seeing many of you referring to VFO instead of Freedom
Scientific when requiring JAWS technical support.

Since international customers have to buy or get support through dealers or in
some cases governmental agencies, I'm not very aware on what is exactly VFO. Is
it an enterprise to which Freedom Scientific sold its trademarks including
JAWS? Is it a Freedom Scientific subsidiary to serve some specific area in the
United States? Will software references to Freedom Scientific be replaced with
VFO ones in the future?

Current Freedom Scientific website bottom simply tells “Part of VFO,” and VFO's
website have no much information.

Thanks in advance!

Hi Rick,

The XP computer I'm going to connect to is running a Tandem version of Jaws
11. I was able to Tandem to this version of Jaws on a Windows 7 32 bit
system, but will I be able to Tandem to Jaws 11 on an XP computer using Jaws
16 from a Windows 7 computer? I sure hope what Señor Ferrin says is true,
because it'll make what I'm attempting a heap easier! LOL

VFO is a merger of Freedom Scientific, Inc. and Optelec. This occurred year
before last. Since VFO has gobbled up a few more companies as well. Try a
search on "VFO purchases Freedom Scientific" and a lot of info comes up.

The short answer is yes. So long as you as the controlling computer have an
equal or newer version of JAWS. Operating systems do not focus in this
