Hi Cher,

Thanks for the update. Are you using JAWS 18 or 2018? I was still seeing
this behavior as late as last week, but I have been switching between 18 and
2018 and now can't remember which one I was in when it crashed.

Thanks again.

Follow-up for Pam-

With the latest IE11 and the May update for JFW, I can now maximize the
window without IE crashing. When we had this conversation a few months ago,
IE was crashing when I tried to maximize at least frequently, and possibly
always.

I have narrowed this down to appearing to be a ZoomText issue. If I close

Cher, here's how to do it in Firefox:

1. Press alt-t for tools, then o for options.
2. Tab many times to the "Language" section.
3. Keep tabbing until you get the option to select "Check my spelling as I

Switching to the default settings by insert-space-z fixes the problem, at
least temporarily.
But it still does not answer the question WHY this is happening. Running
JAWS in default mode means that every keystroke is spoken and the volume is
very slow.

trying out changing to running JAWS in the factory default mode.

Cher

Hello Cher,

Thank you for contacting VFOT Technical Support. Please ensure all Windows
updates, including Office updates, are installed and applied. If the issue
persists at that point, please try running JAWS in the factory default mode
to determine if the issue still occurs. To do this, press INSERT+SPACE
followed by Z. This keystroke is a toggle, so pressing it again will disable
default mode when finished.

If the issue does not occur when running JAWS in default mode, you will need
to remove user settings. To do this:
1. If using Windows 7:
A. Navigate to Start>All Programs>JAWS (version number)>Explore JAWS>Explore
My Settings.
B. Highlight all the files in this folder and delete them.
2. If using Windows 8 or above:
A. Navigate to your Start screen, type the word "utilities", and select the
Utilities option populated for the version number being used.
B. Select the option for Explore User Settings.
C. Highlight all files in this folder and delete them.

If the issue still occurs when running it in Default mode, please run a
/type repair on JAWS, as follows:

1. Navigate to the JAWS 2018 installer file. If you don't have it, you may
download it from http://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/JAWS
2. With the file highlighted, press SHIFT+F10, or hold down the SHIFT key
and right click it.
3. Select the option that says "Copy as Path".
4. Press WINDOWS+R to invoke the Run dialog.
5. In the edit field, press CTRL+V to paste the path, then a space at the
end of this string.
6. Write the following text exactly (excluding the quotes): "/type repair"
7. Press ENTER or click OK.
At the end of the repair, JAWS will prompt you to reboot the machine.

If this does not resolve the issue, set Outlook back to default views, as
follows:

1. Close Outlook.
2. Press WINDOWS+R to invoke the Run dialog.
3. In the edit field, type the following without the quotes "outlook.exe
/cleanviews".
4. Press ENTER.
5. If the issue persists, repeat steps 1 and 2 above.
6. In the edit field, type the following without the quotes "outlook.exe
/resetnavpane".
7. Press ENTER.

If your issue is still not resolved after having tried all suggestions
above, please call our Support hotline at (727)803-8600 for further

Hi Arvind,

You can get these scripts at http://www.dlee.org/youtube.
If you will use the scripts in English, the installer makes everything for you
on the JAWS versions/languages you choose.
If you speak another language different than English, you will have to
translate the scripts yourself or ask for them in your local communities. As an
example, I translated these scripts and the user guide to Spanish.

Hope it helps!

Subject: [JAWS-Users] still having issue with Outlook and HTML messages

Hi. I'm still having the vexing and annoying issue of the latest issue of
JAWS periodically changing how it reads Outlook messages (windows-7, Outlook
2010). JAWS will be doing a great job of reading a message, then, for no
apparent reason, when I bring up the next message, read all kinds of info:
"Table 1, row 1, nesting level 3." etc. I have to close Outlook and,
sometimes, JAWS and bring them back for JAWS and Outlook to function
normally again.

I'm doing nothing to cause this to happen except bringing up the next e-mail
message.

This does not happen with every message, but it is repeatable, in that if I
read e-mail long enough it will, inevitably, happen.

Frankly, this is unacceptable. It would be helpful if the VFO folks who
monitor this list could at least acknowledge the problem. I'm happy to spend
time on the phone with VFO tech support so they can see the problem. I know
I'm not the only one who is experiencing this issue.

Thanks.

John, a frustrated JAWS user.

PS For whatever reason, this does not happen at work with JAWS Professional
and Outlook 2013.

Thanks.

I think what you are looking for is JAWS key + ALT +W to virtualize the

Hi,
I am using Excel, and usually I press control + F2 twice quickly, and I can
copy the formula that comes up.
Only now I can only read the okay button, like it is in one of those message
boxes that we cannot get to.
If I do an insert + B, it reads the window, I just cannot copy the formula
as I usually do.
What is the command for making a non editable window copyable?
I know there is such a command, for copying messages that we normally cannot
copy.
Thanks.

Not necessarily related to this current query, but I recommend you download
and install VLC player. It's ideal for all video formats out of the box,
non-intrusive, and fairly accessible (the preferences dialog and some other
issues exist in the default interface). It really works well though, and if
you set it up properly it will open these files by default. The program is
free, so no dangling or demands.

You're right, there is no media player specifically bundled in Windows 10.

As I recall, when you set up Windows 10, you are given the choice of various
default programs. Microsoft suggests the Groove music player, but you can
choose any other media player including Windows Media Player.

The .dat file is a data file, as J.M. suggests, and is intended to be opened
by the program that created it. Many programs can open .dat files for their
own purposes; Windows stores .dat files in the Registry; CCleaner, Recuva,
Speccy are some system utilities that create .dat files; as do some
different games like Mindcraft, SimCity, etc.
WinMail, the native mail app in Windows 10 also creates .dat files and uses
them when a recipient's email doesn't support .rtf messages.
Finally, Video information on CD and DVD disks have .dat files.
Those are the main category associations, there are others that are created,
such as governmental forms generated through the Department of State that
I'm aware of.

Programs that open DAT files include:
  Windows File Viewer Plus
Microsoft Windows Mail
Microsoft Outlook 2016
Encryptomatic Message Viewer Lite
Traction WinMail Decoder Pro
Winmail.dat Reader

Hi Cher,

Google Chrome is the browser you download from Google's website and many
programs offer during installation, wetter you are an individual or an
enterprise.
In the JAWS Chrome script files there is the difference between Chrome and
Google Chrome, because Chrome is a generic way to refer to other browsers that
use the open source Chromium engine used by Google Chrome, for example the
modern versions of Opera.

Hope this clarification is helpful.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving songs using jaws 2018 in iTunes

2017-12-19 Thread Cher Bosch
Unless it has changed recently, the only way to edit the order of playlists
is with the mouse according to Apple. In a note from them in September 2015,
they wrote:
"Thank you for your reply. The Playlist items may be arranged via drag and
drop action. If JAWS has a drag and drop function, we recommend trying that
as a way to rearrange playlists."

I have editable lists made with version 11 or the first few versions of 12;
and I have uneditable ones created with iTunes 12.2.1 and later.

My only suggestion is to uninstall the current version of iTunes and install
one of the older versions prior to 12.2; then create a large number of empty
playlists. He can then install a new version and the 'old' playlists will
still be editable. These can be used forever or if editing is completed,
these can be copied into uneditable playlist created with the newer version
for permanent storage. This is what I do when I have playlists I want to
burn onto CDs.

The playlist he has already made will be saved as long as he does not delete
the library- but it will remain uneditable without a mouse- however this
will give him the opportunity to copy it into an older version editable
playlist. HTH

I couldn’t find that setting either to double check it. When you first start
Adobe acrobat reader, you do get that Accessibility wizard. I was a little bit
confused with that, but I did tell it to read all pages. But then there was
something about should I display continuously or as a single page. I picked
single page. Because I thought the telling if I wanted to read all pages even
in large documents where is sufficient. Now I can’t find the screen
Accessibility thing again to go through it. I’ve certainly done through the
menus and really can’t find it. Hopefully this jaws control F will do it.

successfully used such services with Winamp for years previously. Nowadays I
mostly just play stuff from my own library.

VLC is great for video formats, but although some claim otherwise, I'm just
not as happy with its playlist options as I am with Winamp's. Plus, it's
equaliser is very inconvenient to set. But if you are a film buff, you
should have it; it plays pretty much everything without the need for plugins

Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox Quantum is coming, and it doesn't like screen-readers

2017-10-26 Thread Cher Bosch
I think this is the article you referenced:

This blog post was just sent out by Freedom Scientific. If you use JAWS and
Firefox, you need to read this.

Important information for users of Mozilla Firefox

Jonathan Mosen October 25, 2017 0

Overview

On November 14, Mozilla is expected to release a new version of its Firefox
web browser. Firefox 57 represents such a significant technical and
performance change that it's going to be known as Firefox Quantum. Mozilla
and mainstream reviewers of the beta code agree, the browser is much faster
and more memory efficient.

The reason why mainstream users will see such a significant speed increase
with Firefox Quantum is that it is switching to a multiprocess methodology.
Unfortunately, Mozilla in their switch to multiprocess for Firefox has
chosen an accessibility approach in which each call for JAWS to obtain
information takes orders of magnitude more time. We are disappointed that
Mozilla has not at this time adopted the highly performant approach that
Google took with Chrome to increase security while at the same time allowing
screen readers to access information at unparalleled speed without needing
to make any changes.

For now, we recommend switching to the Extended Support Release (ESR) of
Firefox as work on the accessibility issues continues, because even when you
are running assistive technology that supports Firefox Quantum, performance
with Firefox will be much worse than you are used to. We're working with
Mozilla to improve the situation and are hopeful of further improvement.

We appreciate that if you're a Firefox user, it's software you are likely to
use many times every day. We want by way of this post to explain the
situation as it currently stands and how we got here, plus what we're doing
about it and steps you can take so that in the short to medium term, you can
use Firefox with the same degree of responsiveness you're used to.

Short-term Work-around

For now, there is a way to avoid upgrading to Firefox Quantum while keeping
your browser updated with important security fixes. You can install Firefox
ESR (Extended Support Release). The Quantum changes are not scheduled to be
rolled out to this release until the second quarter of 2018, by which time
we hope the accessibility situation with Firefox Quantum will have improved.

Compatibility

While we cannot recommend Firefox Quantum at this time, we appreciate that
some people may be curious and want to experiment with it. Firefox Quantum
will not work in any fashion unless you are running the latest versions of
JAWS 2018, JAWS 18, ZoomText 11 and MAGic 14. Previous versions of our
assistive technology are not compatible with Firefox Quantum.

To ensure Quantum will run at all, please ensure you are running the most
current version of the above technologies. Please visit our downloads page
for the latest software.

If going current with your assistive technology isn't possible, the Firefox
ESR release discussed above will continue to work at this time with the
technology you have. This will not always be the case, so if using Firefox
is important to you, you should make plans to bring your technology
up-to-date over the next few months.

When it is installed, Firefox Quantum will be able to detect if older
assistive technology is running that is not compatible. When this is the
case, Firefox Quantum will alert you to this.

Performance

Unfortunately, even if you have an assistive technology product that has
been updated to accommodate Mozilla's new approach, you will notice a
serious deterioration in performance. We would go as far as saying that at
this point, you would not want to use Firefox Quantum for your daily
browsing. Pages will take a long time to load, and navigating pages will be
problematic.

The reason for this is that Firefox's implementation of multiprocess has
caused a marked deterioration in the speed of communication between the
browser and assistive technology.

As our users who browse with Google Chrome, which has been using
multiprocess for some time, can confirm, multiprocess browsers can provide a
highly responsive experience comparable with what Firefox users are
accustomed to, and it is still our hope that Mozilla might adopt a similar
approach.

The problem created by Firefox Quantum is a complex technical one, but we
believe all our users are entitled to an explanation, so here's our best
shot. To give you a browsing experience that is the most flexible available,
as well as being intuitive and accurate, JAWS behaves a bit like an
impatient child on a long car journey. It asks Firefox many questions on a
regular basis, including "are we there yet". In the past, Firefox had no
difficulty answering all our questions quickly and patiently, meaning we
could always give you up-to-the-second information about what was happening
on the web page. For our readers with some technical knowledge, we did this
through calls to MSAA and it wasn't necessary to ration those

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Equifax CAPTCHA Work Around

Hi Folks,

I’ve figured a work around for the Equifax Hack Check web page located at:

Equifax’s TrustedID website

The problem:

reports have stated that when entering on the “play button” to start the audio
CAPTCHA recording, there is no area or edit field to place the numbers you
hear, simply a “verify” button, and a “help” button. The only edit fields on
the page are for your last name, and the last six digits of your social
security/social insurance numbers.

Solution:

Once you enter on the play button to run the audio file, turn off your virtual
viewer with insert+Z and begin typing the numbers you hear.

Once you’ve typed out the numbers you hear, turn your virtual viewer back on
with insert+Z and arrow down to the “verify” button, as the tab key will skip
over that button, though I’m not sure why at this point.

I would suggest turning off key echo, as Jaws speaking will or might interfere
in hearing the numbers properly, and you do have to solve the CAPTCHA multiple
times for verification, and each time, you do have to repeat the above, but
eventually, it does tell you that you are verified and the checkbox that
identifies you as not a robot gets checked.

Whether you choose to listen to the file multiple times, or download the file
as an MP3, you still have to turn off your virtual cursor with insert+Z to
enter the numbers.

I was asked to solve a CAPTCHA three or four times, supposedly because it
wanted to make sure I wasn’t a robot, LOL, but thank goodness, you only have to
remember five numbers each time, otherwise this would be very difficult.

Hope this helps.

Gene and all:

I want to report that I believe I've solved my problem here.

Thanks to a suggestion by Adrian, the strategy of using Convenient OCR to
convert the document, and then copying and pasting into Notepad has
definitely worked the best.

I had to take some time cleaning up the resulting files, but things now
appear to be fairly readable.

Thanks, all, for your patience as I sorted things out.

Hi

Although this isn't an answer, it is related. The last time I looked at
Adobe Reader DC, I disliked it so much that I removed it and went back to
version 9.5. I had the same reaction when I tried upgrading to Adobe Reader
X.

Even Reader 9.5 isn't my primary pdf reader, for that I use Q Read. I only
use Adobe Reader when I need to print or use JAWS convenient OCR's document
feature on a PDF of page images instead of text. From there I save the text
to a text file and use notepad or Word to read the file.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problem with Jaws and Outlook

2017-05-25 Thread Cher Bosch
Try turning preview pane to off, and When using JAWS, the Outlook Reading
Pane must be set to the bottom of the window or disabled. If the Reading
Pane is set to the right, it forces the Message List Headers into Two-line
mode, and only the first line is announced.

Keep reading for more from the topic.

Cher

This is from the JAWS help topic for Outlook:
Outlook Helpful Hints
The following are some helpful hints for using Outlook with JAWS.

Outlook Reading Pane
When using JAWS, the Outlook Reading Pane must be set to the bottom of the
window or disabled. If the Reading Pane is set to the right, it forces the
Message List Headers into Two-line mode, and only the first line is
announced.

To set the Reading Pane to the bottom of the window, or to disable it, do
the following:

Open Outlook.
Press ALT+V to choose the View tab (Outlook 2010 or later) or View menu.
Choose Reading Pane.
Select Bottom to set the pane to the bottom of the window, or select Off to
disable the reading pane.
Outlook Options
While working in Outlook, you can press INSERT+V to open Quick Settings and
change JAWS options that are specific to Outlook. For more information on
how to use Quick Settings as well as the standard JAWS options that are not
described in this section, see Quick Settings.

Message Follow-Up Flag Indication
When turned on, JAWS announces if a follow-up flag has been applied to the
selected e-mail message. The default setting is Off.

Message Forwarded Flag Indication
When turned on, JAWS announces if a forward flag has been applied to the
selected e-mail message. The default setting is Off.

Use Virtual Cursor for Read-Only Messages
Use this option to have JAWS render read-only messages in the virtual
buffer. E-mail messages that contain complex tables and formatting are often
difficult to read when using Outlook 2007 or later. This is due to Word
being used to render the HTML content. By default, this setting is enabled
and read-only messages will be rendered in the virtual buffer for ease of
reading. Disable this option if you want to interact directly with the Word
Editor rather than reading the message in the Virtual Buffer.

Address List Auto-Complete Announcement
When you type an e-mail address into the To, CC, or BCC edit boxes, Outlook
searches for matches in your address book and then automatically completes
the entry for you. JAWS will now announce the address that Outlook
automatically inserts into the edit box. To disable this feature, press
INSERT+V, select "Address List Auto-Complete Announcement," and press the
SPACEBAR to choose Off.

Information Bar Messages Announcement
In Outlook, the information bar frequently displays useful status
information. For example, this bar informs you when attachments have been
removed from a message, which account a message will be sent from, when you
last replied to the current message, when the appointment/meeting you are
creating conflicts with an existing appointment, when an appointment time
has passed, and so on. If you want JAWS to automatically announce the
contents of the information bar when reading messages, leave this option set
to On.

Message Header Fields Announce with Message Announcement
If this option is set to On, then JAWS automatically reads the From and
Subject fields when you open a message. If you change this option to Off,
then JAWS does not automatically read this information.

Message Type Announcement
When turned on, JAWS announces the sender's message type, for example, HTML
or Plain Text. The default setting is Off.

Link Count Announcement
If you open an e-mail message containing links and this option is turned on,
JAWS indicates the number of links that appear in the message. The default
setting is On.

Messages Automatically Read
If you want JAWS to automatically read the message body from beginning to
end, change this option to On. If you do not want JAWS to automatically read
the message body after reading the message header, then leave this option
set to Off.

Tip: When reading messages automatically, the cursor may move faster than
JAWS speech. If you stop speech with CTRL, you should press CTRL+HOME to
move to the beginning of the message before continuing to read.

Optimizing Outlook
The following are choices and suggestions for optimizing Outlook options for
use with JAWS:

Calendar
Press CTRL+2 to move to the Calendar view. You can use the folowing
keystrokes to select one of four views:

Day, CTRL+ALT+1
Work Week, CTRL+ALT+2
Week, CTRL+ALT+3
Month, CTRL+ALT+4
In all views, use LEFT and RIGHT ARROW to move between the days of the
month. In Day, Week, or Work Week view, use UP and DOWN ARROW to move
between the different time slots for the current day. In Month view, use UP
and DOWN ARROW to move through weeks. Press TAB or SHIFT+TAB to cycle
through your appointments for the current day. To open an appointment,
select it and press ENTER. Pressing INSERT+CTRL+D announces the currently
focused date and view in the

leave Outlook, Jaws leaves me. The keystrokes for shutting down the computer
don't work. This has happened about five times within the past half hour. I
won't even be able to call FS to get help remotely because I won't be able
to move from where I am to the Jaws menu. I absolutely don't know what to do
under these circumstances. Has anyone had this experience with the new
upgrade? Does anyone have any suggestions?

[JAWS-Users] Setting time/date with JFW in Win10

Using Win 10 anniversary update and JAWS latest update-

I'm trying to see if the automatically adjust for daylight savings time is

Using the JAWS touch cursor- I can read off and on settings but cannot tell
which is selected and cannot select one as well. Without the touch cursor,
all this text is not even read or does not appear in the tab order.

Also, in this one location, I cannot reengage the virtual cursor after
activating the touch cursor. If I alt-tab to a different application I can
get out of the touch cursor though.

Re: [JAWS-Users] iTunes: Rearranging Order of Playlist

2017-02-07 Thread Cher Bosch
You can no longer rearrange the order of songs if the playlist was created
in iTunes later than 12.1. If there are older playlists (created with older
versions of iTunes) you can rearrange these. I copy my old playlists (which
I don't need to rearrange) into a new playlist; then use the now empty old
playlist to create and rearrange song order until I'm satisfied with the
order. A tech at Apple verified that a physical mouse is the only way to
rearrange playlists- (beginning with iTunes 12.2.1, I believe).

Hi All,

I have an acquaintance with a new Windows 10 HP laptop with the latest
versions of both JAWS 18 and iTunes installed. This individual would like to
be able to rearrange tracks in his iTunes playlist; any suggestions? We
attempted the drag and drop method without success, though this could be
because we missed a step. One thing noticed with Windows 10 is that the JAWS
cursor cannot be depended upon to work as well as it had in previous
versions of Windows.

We know of the drag and drop key sequence (Control+JAWS Key+NumPad Slash).
We even tried having the JAWS cursor follow the PC cursor (Control+JAWS
Key+NumPad Minus). Basically, we attempted this task using every JAWS
Key+option
we could think of including using the JAWS cursor independently.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

[JAWS-Users] Key command to switch active folder/mailbox in Thunderbird

2016-09-03 Thread Cher Bosch
Trying to help a friend with JAWS 16 and Thunderbird change focus from the
InBox to other folders. I don't use TB so am reading forum topics to try to
assist. We got her Sent folder to show now, but are using menus to move to
Go> her account> folder submenu> (if I remember) to move from the InBox to
another folder. This seems awfully cumbersome, so this is why I'm writing.
I'm spoiled by Outlook's Control-Y key command to accomplish this. I hope
I'm missing something which you Thunderbird users all know ;) Thanks.

Hi Group, here are some more tips about getting around in the anniversary
update to W-10.
Hi Group, here are some more tips about getting around in the anniversary
update to W-10.

The start button area.
After pressing either the windows key or pressing enter on the start button.
You will be in the search edit box, just start typing what you are looking
for as normal.
Tab one time from the search edit box to, the navigation menu list.
Here you have in a list, navigation menu, your account, shortcuts for,
documents, downloads, personal folder, and the power button.
Tab a second time to, Apps view.
Here you have a complete list of all the apps and programs on your computer.
You can use first letter navigation, as long as you have a app or program
starting with that letter. For example, if you press a C: and you do not
have any apps or programs starting with a C: nothing will happen, you will
stay where you are at. But for example, if you press a J:, you will jump
down to Jaws.
Using the applications key and its menus are the same as they were before in
the start area.
Making desktop shortcuts for all your apps and programs are done the same
way, pinning apps or programs to the taskbar, and start area live tiles, are
done the same way as they were before.
Now tabbing a third time from the search edit box, you will be in a list of
your live tiles.
Depending on how you have them set up, they will be either in a straight
list like mine are, or from the group heading of one you will press the
right arrow key to move to the next heading of another group.
Now if you tab again, you will wrap back around to the search edit box.

Using the settings area.
After pressing Windows key+I, for the settings area.
You will now land in the search edit box, just tab one time to the 9 main
categories, as you are used to seeing.
After pressing enter on any main category, just tab one time to the list of
sub-categories under the main category.
Remember the first sub-category is already highlighted for you, you can
begin tabbing across.
While in the settings area, you need to use the Insert key+Tab, to make
Jaws, say what control you are sitting on, and tell you, what that control
is set to.
There are many new sub-categories, in the new anniversary update to W-10,
for you to learn.

The notification center has been changed to the action center.
So when you press Windows key+A, you will either land on, notifications, you
can just down arrow to read them, you can tab to the dismiss this
notification, press the spacebar. Or you will land on, collapse quick
actions, just tab one time to the first quick action, and just press the
right arrow key to go across all the quick actions you have pinned to the
action center.

The task manager works just fine.

You will need to turn off most background apps, most are on by default.
You will need to uninstall some apps if you wish in the apps list in the
start area.

Using Narrator.
Narrator works and responds much better.
I changed the voice of narrator to the David desktop voice, very deep, good
for my bad hearing.

Most everything else, is about the same in the anniversary update to W-10 as
it previously was.
If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to ask them, we will do our
best, to answer them.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Transferring music to an iPhone using iTunes, windows 10 and Jaws 17

2016-07-21 Thread Cher Bosch
The easiest way may be to create a playlist for your iPhone on the PC using
iTunes. Then after connecting your phone, you can select your phone, then
music and select the playlist you created. After this, you will only need to
make additions or deletions to the playlist in iTunes on the PC. Then every
time you sync your phone, the changes will be made for you automatically.

I brouse through email and I decide to go back to the internet to search for

Hello Listmembers:

Up until a week or so ago, the music tab (that is my entire song archives in
Itunes was at the top of a treeview. To move to Playlists, I arrowed down to
its position in the treeview. Now, in order to do this, I tab about 25 times
to Playlists. Also, on a related note, my general song titles are listed
under My Music, whereas until recently songs were listed under Music.

This may be the source of the issue, where there is a specific prompt or
keystroke to have my overall song titles re-grouped under Music.

I'm not sure that I've explained this issue adequately enough. Nonetheless,
any help would be appreciated.

Best to all, Justin

Yes, I get that far too- but then StartPage is not listed on the official
Internet Explorer Add-on Gallery page and I don't see any edit field to add
it even if you knew what exactly to put there. The links there do not show
addresses so am not even sure of the format or whatever.

Maybe what I have now is all there is: 1) I can always do a control-T to
launch a new search; and 2) StartPage does show up in the drop down menu
under control-E. I'm at a loss re why it does not show up as an add-on, but
perhaps there is not really an advantage to the user for it to be an add-on.
It is confounding and confoundable to say the least ;)

Hi Cher & Rick,

The following was running Windows 7. This might help but, who knows:
What I did was put,

www.startpage.com

Into the, Run dialogue, & press enter.

I then started at the top of the page & navigated by heading to,

Heading Level 2, Put StartPage to work for you

Now I started arrowing down until I got to,

Add StartPage to
your browser, Arrow down to, Link More, & press enter.

& it took me here:
Add to IE
You can now easily add StartPage to your list of Internet Explorer 7+ (IE7+)
search providers. Please use the following url from the official Internet
Explorer Add-on Gallery, to download and install the plugin for IE 9+. Now
arrow down to a link that's supposed to take you to the plug-in.
There's a link that I clicked on here but, hopefully y'all will have more
luck with it.

Take care.

conclusion that it cannot be added to IE11, only to Edge. It's enough to

When I deleted the second one, it just disappeared but without an edit field
or an 'add' button or anything helpful. Also, on the IE Search Provider

Re: [JAWS-Users] [Bulk] ITunes issue.

2016-04-11 Thread Cher Bosch
Justin- I'm guessing you have a 12.2x version of iTunes. Apple removed that
functionality in one of the 12.x versions, and the only way to re-order a
playlist is with drag and drop. However, if you have older playlists which
you don't need to edit, you can copy them into a new playlist created with
your current iTunes version; then use the now empty older playlist to edit
your new playlist. This is what I have had to do- and I'm so glad I had a
lot of playlists created in older versions so I can continue to do this! HTH

Here's my correspondence with Apple:
Hello,

Thank you for your reply. The Playlist items may be arranged via drag and
drop action. If JAWS has a drag and drop function, we recommend trying that
as a way to rearrange playlists.

Sincerely,

Apple Accessibility

These problems refer to keyboard accessibility issues in playlists and were
created in iTunes 12.2.1 and continue in 12.3:

*Selection:

Within playlists created with these iTunes versions, selection no longer
seems to follow the cursor keys- so standard windows keyboard commands for
cut or copy result in a "nothing selected" error message. It is impossible
to re-arrange the order of songs created under these versions of iTunes. The
only playlists which are still functional are those which were created in
prior versions of iTunes.

*Navigation:

Using the arrow keys, after arrowing up or down for 15 or so lines, the
selection focus is lost. You cannot read the information or proceed further
in that direction without first arrowing backward one line- which then
allows you to move forward one more line- thus advancing only one line at a
time (backwards then forwards) in a see-saw fashion. The cursor actually
does move but the focus seems to be lost and the new song information is not
read.

Using the home or end key moves the cursor to the end or beginning of the
playlist; but JAWS does not read the information on that line. It is
necessary to arrow away from that song and back before the information can
be read.

Similarly, the page up and page down keys will not read the information for
the song on which the cursor lands.

*Nuisance artwork:

With these iTunes versions, artwork appears on each line of the playlist.
Even copying the songs from an old playlist without artwork into a new one
created under these versions produces a playlist with the artwork icons.

*Nuisance iTunes becoming unresponsive:

Accidental use of the standard windows command Control-Home results in
iTunes freezing. This command is so commonly used for various purposes by
keyboard users that this is bothersome.

Since installing iTunes 12.2.1, new playlists are not accessible to persons
relying on keyboard accessibility to work with them. I phoned Apple
Accessibility recently to see if the tech could replicate my problem. He
verified that with the latest iTunes, you cannot use keyboard shortcuts to
select, copy or move songs in new playlists with the keyboard (using a PC).
He verified that it is not a JAWS issue as he did not have JAWS installed,
and could not perform these functions either. I can still use all these
keyboard commands within playlists created prior to installing the new
iTunes- but even if I duplicate an old playlist and rename it (so I can have
a editable playlist) the newly duplicated playlist is non-editable-
apparently because it was duplicated under the new iTunes. The only way I
can add songs to one of these new playlists is by using 'add to playlist' on
the context menu- and the order of songs is unchangeable by this method-
I.E. the order you add the songs is unchangeable after the fact. So,

Hi everyone, hope you guys are all having a great day.
So I was going to install windows live mail on my windows 10 laptop running
jaws 17 (not latest version), but I was told for it to work correctly I have
to have reading pain turned off. My problem is this and I'm sure a lot of
you can relate to this. I belong to 10 or so mailing lists, and that means
hundreds of messages per day. The mail client I'll be using needs to
provide the following workable feature with jaws.
I need jaws to read the senders name, subject, and then to proceed to read a
couple of lines of the body of the email, so I can decide weather to delete
the message or to open it for further reading. Right now I'm using outlook
on windows 7 laptop with jaws 15 and this feature works great.
As I'm scrolling through the messages in my imbox, I here for example
message unread, from mike, subject help with ie11, and then the date. Then I
hear jaws say for example hi guys I'm a beginner with ie11.
At that point I can decide weather to just hit my delete key or enter to
open it. This makes it easy to go through hundreds of messages per day.
I'm sure a lot of you know where I'm coming from.
So my problem is this windows laptop doesn't have outlook and I've visited
the office.com website and either I'm having a brain fart, or the website is
screwed up, or it's just not offered.
I want to buy outlook email client and nothing else. I don't want the
office 365 subscription but I can't figure it out. Can anyone help? Can
anyone steer me in the right direction?
Thanks again for any help

Hi David and the Jaws users list.
Sorry about any confusion my last email may have caused.
You know that my w-10 and Jaws complete guide can be shared by anyone.
What I was talking about was the plagiarizing of my material by certain
people.
People that I helped teach and learn w-10 with Jaws.
People changing a few words and then calling my work there work.
For some reason they want to receive the reward for my hard work.
I asked this person 4 or 5 times now to quit plagiarizing my work and
calling it his own.
But he refuses to do so, so I had to make a public statement to this effect.
He needs to come up with his own work and needs to quit taking credit for my

Again I apologize for any extra traffic this may have caused.
Yes, my guide that David has graciously put on his Jaws web site can be

I have read a few excellent tutorials on windows 10 and Jaws, and 10 is
on my laptop so I know I'll have to deal with it when I'm away and using the
laptop. Both my PC's still have 7 thankfully, but I'm wondering about when
I have to use 10 and its unfamiliar layout, has anyone used Classic Shell to
make the menus look more like the menus in 7? If you go to the start menu
in windows 10 the way it's set up, I don't see a programs tree view where
you used to be able to see your list of programs and accessories, etc. Does
Classic Shell still even work or would you recommend another program that
will set up 10 to look more familiar? I hope I'm not going off-topic,
because I of course would need a Jaws-friendly program or other ways around
these tricky menus or apps as they're now being called, so that I can
maximize my experience using 10 and Jaws without wanting to give up. One of
the Davids in the group was very helpful in showing me how to get around
lower and upper ribbons in lists by using context menu key. So hopefully
there'll be other hints that will make this thing usable when I need to do
so.

Thanks.

Just a thought about interrupted downloads...I had that problem when we
first got Brighthouse cable. The desktop on wireless would download fine
but my laptop always got interrupted and the speed was so slow it was
useless. I was paying for 25mb speed at that time.
Finally the second repair person solved the problem by putting in a
different router with a lower maximum speed. So I went back to the 10 mb
and it worked great ever since. Saved money, too, by not paying for the
extra speed.
I was ready to pull out my hair before finding a solution. Took it to the
shop and had it overhauled with no luck.
As I said, just a thought since I don't know what your specific download
interruptions are caused by but mine was in the specific router. We did
narrow it down to the router or the cable service since it downloaded
correctly in other locations.

[JAWS-Users] Foxfire placemarker problems

2014-02-19 Thread Don and Cher Bosch
I have 3 problems with FF and JFW's placemarkers:

1) When created, JAWS loses focus and position on the page

2) After creating placemarkers on the first page (of Amazon results for
example) and then moving to the second page of results, then taking the
previous page link moving forward to the first page again, the
placemarkers are non-existent- and JFW reports no placemarkers.

3) If on the other hand, I back-link twice to the first page, the
placemarker list dialog is intact, but the positions of all the markers have
moved totally out of any meaningful relationship to the original item.

Is this a known issue?

TTammy, I have the same problem. I have had it for about a year. When
 ever
I go to update flash, it tells me to close the installer. How is that
possible? Another problem that I have is that if I turn my compputer off,
the flash player is gone. I am using windows seven and jaws fourteen. I
 am
using windows seven and jaws fourteen on my desk top and don't have this
problem, but have it on my desk top. Don't know what to do.

Have you tried going to a different version of jaws first as an
example if you have jaws 11, you should be able to go to the page

Hi Cher,
Those particular settings on a laptop are aimed mostly at conserving battery
power, how much wear and tear they save on hardware is arguable.
If you set everything to never just realize that if you are running on
battery, and not at the computer, there is no real conservation of power You
can extend the battery life somewhat by removing it while running on AC.
Note: this may not work on all laptops.
I have everything set to never on all of my machines, because I don't want
to experience unexpected behavior because I forgot about a minor setting.

Hi All,

There has been a discussion on removing / turning off the BingBar below
are some notes on changing your search provider that might help in stopping
Jaws from reporting BingBar or whatever it says when doing a search.

From: Roger Loran Bailey

Because of this thread and Gene's comments I just did something that I did
not know how to do and didn't even know that I wanted to do until now. I
changed
my own default search engine in Internet Explorer to Google. My default
search engine has been Bing ever since I got this Windows 7 computer, but I
prefer
Google. I handled the problem by just ignoring Bing and making Google my
home page. Because of this discussion I decided to check to see if I could
change
the default search. I went to tools and then to manage add ons. I then
arrowed down until I saw search engines. I tabbed and found Bing checked as
default.
By arrowing up and down I saw that there were other search engines and
Google was not one of them. So I continued to tab until I found a link
labeled search
for other search engines. I clicked that link and came to a Microsoft page
about add ons and at first I didn't think it had anything to do with search
engines, but down the page there was a link to search engines which I
clicked. I then got a list of search results and again Google was not one of

them.
Apparently Microsoft wants to make it hard for you to use Google. In
exasperation I pressed the E key to go to the only edit field on the page
and typed
in Google. Again I got a list of search results, but this time the first one

on the list was Google search. There was a link right after it for adding
it to Internet Explorer. I clicked it again and there was a page listing
some things about Google. By this time I was getting tired of the hoops I
was
jumping through, so I didn't read that material very closely and now I can't

really tell you what it said, but at the very bottom there was another link
offering to add Google to Internet Explorer. I clicked it again and a dialog

came up. Tabbing through it there were several check boxes to either check
or not to check and one of them was to make Google my default search engine.

I did check that and went through the rest of the dialog and click finish
or save or whatever it said at the end. I then just closed the browser and
opened it up again. I don't know if that was necessary, but that is how I
did
it. Then I check by pressing f6 for the address bar and, indeed, it showed
Google. I typed in a word off the top of my head and pressed enter and I got
a list of Google search results. So there is how to make Google your default

search engine in Internet Explorer. I would have done this a long time ago
if I had thought of it or even known where to look.
Roger

Go to the Internet Explorer Gallery

and add a new search provider like Google for example. There's a link

Yes--if you hit ALT+T for the Tools menu while in IE 10 and choose
Manage add-ons, you'll find a radio button for Search Providers.
Select this radio button and then TAB until you hear find more search
providers. Activate this link and you'll be taken to the Internet
Explorer gallery where you can find and add other search providers to
IE including Google. To add the Google search provider, activate the
Google link to bring up the information page and then choose Add to
internet explorer. You'll be prompted as to whether you want to make
this the default search provider.

previous page. When It refuses to back up, closing the page with Control-W
closes IE altogether. Are there any settings changes that need to be made to
eliminate this issue? Are others experiencing this also?

Since I have never gone in to the matter of monitoring specific downloads

It uploaded much faster than I figured it would which allowed me to post

around 8:00 or so last night. Cathy Anne asked that I place a link to her
page which I have done and for reasons of full disclosure also gave her
credit on the page I created for the file.

It is not in my possession as of yet and it will take some time to

Some folks are using Chrome, but I'm still avoiding it.

You can go with the latest Firefox.

If you're buying Outlook as part of an Office suite, you might want to
consider buying Office 2007. It seems like folks who have 2010 or 2013 have
more issues, but I have no experience so those who do can give you better

It appears that if you launch IE from the taskbar in Windows7 as I do, that

maximizing because the last few JAWS versions have had the same issue John

Another issue can be if there were a few pop-ups along the way when the page
