Re: [JAWS-Users] I E 11

Have you tried an earlier version of JAWS? Does IE 11 seem to crash most
often on certain web sites? If so, can you provide the address of a site
you are having trouble with? I'm running JAWS 16 with Windows 7, and have
experienced no issues with IE 11.

Hi Lenny,

If System Restore is turned on it should have created a restore point before
installing the software, unless the scammers went in and turned it off
before installing, or had a way of thwarting the system.

I know that someone remotely installed the trash software, but this is a
perfect time to teach how to create a restore point. I create a new one even
when I am installing trusted software, but certainly if it is a program that
is new to me.
Good luck and the computer's owner should report this to the better business
bureau. If the person is on any user lists like this one, not a bad idea to
post information about the scam.
Good luck to you both,

With Hollar, I had no issues adding a couple items to my cart. The site
isn't what I'd call totally accessible -- but it's close.

I used Jaws 18 with Google Chrome version 66.something.

I searched for Mosquito and added a set of three mosquito bands to my cart.

Then, I went to the pest control category and added some rodent glue traps
to my cart.

I did n't try to checkout, but I did verify that there were two items in the
cart and it showed my total; although I needed a $10 minimum order to
check-out.

if I make sure to select a color, style, or size and make sure that there is
a quantity in the edit spin box, pressing on either the "Add to Cart?"

familiar enough with the site to know just how to proceed to checkout to see
if the items are in the cart or not. I could not find an element with words
like "checkout", "proceed", "go to", or "view cart". I also suspect that
this site updates itself periodically without warning so as to wipe out the
current search list, so that added a level of frustration. I'll stick with
Amazon for now.

Gerald,

The presence of variable will depend on what you are ordering. I selected a
DIY frame, and a combo list was presented with a style type to pick. But
regardless, I was not able to work the buttons after that.

But I did see a thread on the JFW list with a similar issue in selecting
something on the screen. Here is that solution:

To select the tick box with JAWS, simply press the bypass key, JAWS key+3
then space bar. This will tick it.

Give that a try and let us know.

Re: [JAWS-Users] unable to add to cart

2018-05-20 Thread Gerald Levy

Well, I have also encountered this problem on a number of shopping sites.
For instance, when I try to activate the add to shopping cart button on
Hollar.com using JAWS, nothing happens. I have tried the space bar, enter
key, left mouse click and links list, all to no avail. And switching to
another screen reader doesn't work, either. If anyone has a work around,
pleas share it. To test your work around, I suggest visiting Hollar.com, and
trying to activate the button to add an item to your shopping cart.

Judy,

That's too much of an open-ended question. First, we don't know which sites
you are having problems with. Secondly, per your skill level -- are you able
to put items in your cart in any other shopping sites?

C'mon, give us a clue here.

Just a comment about the fact that I just went to two different websites to
purchase items and in both of them I was unable to add the item to my cart.
I am so sick of this. I can look it up and find it, but then can't get
anything to work to add to the cart. I tried three browsers and none of them
worked. I know my jaws is old, jaws 14, but honestly shouldn't something
work? Any ideas are appreciated. I know homicide is out! Judy & Libby

No, JAWS still does not work with Firefox 58 or higher, also known as

Gerald,

I'll jump in here, as well. I'm using version 5.42.6495. Windows 7 32-bit
Professional SP 1.Using JAWS 2018 latest build, but works all the way back
to version 16, as well. As I tab through the program, I land on buttons. I
press a button with the spacebar, and continue to tab, as there are now
other buttons resulting. e.g. if I tab past the Tools button, I land on the
next button -- Options. But is I select Tools, Uninstall, Startup, Browser
Plug Ins, etc. With continual Tabbing, I come back around to the first
button "Check for Updates".

If I select the Uninstall button, and tab enough, I land on a list view,
showing all my installed programs. I can navigate this list using the
up/down arrows, as well as first-letter navigation to jump quickly to a
particular program.

There are times when I select from a list and select an action like remove,
where I lose focus. Then all I do is Alt-tab away and back in to CCleaner
and tab back to the list. IF that is not accessible, then I have several
other programs that are totally worse.

Hi Gerald.
The CCleaner download page is somewhat counterintuitive. However, once you
activate one of the many download links, the standard installer will get
downloaded to your default downloads directory.
Although CCleaner used to install Avast by default, there is good news.
First, using the Jaws cursor in the installer, you can uncheck the relevant
box. But better still, the last three versions of CCleaner standard did not
automatically install any third party software. The check box for Avast is
now absent.

Mike, I specdifically indicated that I do not want to bother with the hassle
of removing Avast, which, according to your instructions, may require
booting into safe mode, which is impossible without sighted help because
JAWS still does not provide speech. Some users on other lists have reported
being unable to remove Avast without booting into safe mode to use the
removal tool, and I don't want to take any chances. Beside, I do not want
to have to remove Avast every time a new version of CCleaner is released,
which is pretty frequently. So I guess the bottom line is that I will
simply have to keep CCleaner 5.38 without updating it. Go Yankees!

Hi Gerald,

You can remove Avast with the removal tool very easily. Read all the steps
first, and there's a download link for the tool below the steps. Here's the
steps:
1. Press enter on the, AvastClear, .EXE file.
2. You will get the following message:

Avast Antivirus Clear
It is recommended to run this tool from Windows Safe Mode.
Do you want to do that?
Press "Yes" to reboot into Safe Mode now and run this tool
from there.
Press "No" to continue running this tool as it is (not
recommended).
Yes No
3. Tab to the, No button, & press enter or spacebar. Now press the spacebar
on the, Uninstall button, to start the uninstall process as Administrator.
After Avast is uninstalled you should get a prompt to restart the computer.
When the computer reboots you can check to see if any remnants of the
program are left behind. The 1 time I used this removal tool the only
remnant I found left behind was an Avast folder in the Program Files, &
Program Data folders on the root of the C drive, but I did not check the
registry.

Sandy,

As far as the simplest to set up, and signal strength, get the Apple Airport
router. The GUI to do adjustments is quite accessible, as well.

You did not say whether you are using cable or telephone data as your

the broadband. Many of those broadband routers come with Wi-Fi capability.
However in my case I turned off the Wi-Fi in my Arris Cable modem and use

Sandy,

As far as the simplest to set up, and signal strength, get the Apple Airport
router. The GUI to do adjustments is quite accessible, as well.

You did not say whether you are using cable or telephone data as your
incoming broadband. Either will require you get a modem to interface with
the broadband. Many of those broadband routers come with Wi-Fi capability.
However in my case I turned off the Wi-Fi in my Arris Cable modem and use
the Apple Airport to do all the Wi-Fi work.

I suggest that you go to Fast.com to check your Internet download speed. It
has been my experience that this problem can be caused by excessively slow
Internet download speeds. If Fast.com shows that your Internet speed is
less than say, 500 kbps, then contact your ISP to determine whether you have
an Internet connectivity problem.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Problem with receiving e-mails and password

Hi Everyone,

I have JAWS 13, Windows 7 and Outlook 2010

In the past couple of weeks, I have been having problems receiving e-mails.
Usually I would receive from 150 to 200 e-mails a day. Now I am lucky if I
receive 100 e-mails a day. This problem must have started a few weeks ago.
In the past, as soon as I would turn on my computer all my new e-mails would
instantly appear and now it takes quite a long time for them to appear. I
have sent myself test e-mails to see, but even if I press F-9, my new
e-mails will not appear quickly as they did in the past.

Around the same time of this problem happening, when ever I was in my
Outlook screen either preparing an e-mail, or reading my e-mails, I would
get a pop up saying something to the effect of Internetproviders name and it
would ask me to enter my password which I never had. As soon as I would
press Escape it would take me back to my document. Before, it may have
happened once a day, but today it is happening every minute or so. It is
quite annoying. I am sure that these two problems are somehow connected.

For a very long time I had Verizon as my provider and for some reason
Verizon purchased AOL and they are running the e-mails.

Any help will be greatly appreciated on how I can alleviate these problems.

Another tip. If your PDF documents are being read by Acrobat Reader PC or
Adobe Reader, you should uncheck the box in the Accessibility Set Up
Assistant labeled, "Open PDF documents in the web browser", which may be
checked by default. To do this, launch Acrobat Reader, go to the Edit menu
and scroll all the way down to the Accessibility submenu. Select Set up
Assistant, and on the fifth and final page of the Assistant, tab to this
check box and uncheck it. Opening PDF documents in the browser can
sometimes cause problems with JAWS or the browser itself.

[JAWS-Users] Accessible Alternative to CCleaner

2017-11-17 Thread Gerald Levy

According to a warning posted on other lists by our esteemed colleague, Mike
D., installing the latest version of CCleaner may also surreptitiously install
Avast anti-virus on your computer. This is not surprising, since Puriform, the
company that develops and markets CCleaner is now owned by Avast. But
unfortunately, Avast is no longer JAWS accessible. And uninstalling it could
be problematic because it is necessary to boot into safe mode in order to use
the special tool to completely remove itl, according to the Avast site. So is
there any JAWS accessible alternative to CCleaner? I am afraid to update to
the latest version for fear of getting stuck with Avast which may be difficult
to impossible to remove without sighted help.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong. You need to install the
just-released public version of JAWS 2018 to take advantage of expanded OCR
capabilities that allow you to scan documents using a flatbed scanner or
Pearl camera and convert them into speech. Earlier versions of JAWS lack
this feature. For more information on the JAWS 2018 expanded OCR function,

Morning all.

I just scanned a copy of my discharge papers from the US Coast Guard. After
saving it, I tried to open it and read it using JAWS OCR. I pressed the
JawsKey and Spacebar. Then I hit O for OCR, and then D. I heard a piano
chime, but nothing from JAWS after that. Can anyone tell me what I am doing
wrong on this? I went into my pictures folder in This PC to get the

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Intro and Internet Explorer Problem

Hello All,
This is Glenn in Northeast Nebraska.
I believe in myself to be a relatively computer-wise person most of the
time, but I have a problem that has me stumped this time, and hoping someone
here might have an idea for me.
I called Amazon about this problem, and they could not help me, they don't
have a clue.
Anyway, what happened is that I was trying to help someone with little
computer skills, via eMail, because he was having a problem with making some
purchases from Amazon.com.
So I suggested that he try the access page by typing in the Amazon.com URL
with /access at the end.
He could not make that simple thing happen, so I told him that I would eMail
him the URL, because he can press enter on a link.
Well, all that helped, but to be sure that the /access page was still going
on with Amazon, I actually did it first from my Internet Explorer.
It is, and I copied the URL and sent it to him, and that was the end of his
problems, and the beginning of mine.

I prefer IE over FireFox, which I also have installed.
But now, there is no way I can get to a non-access page on Amazon.com, and I
would prefer the non-access page, because I don't want separate links for
reviews and details, and I like headings on pages, which the access pages
lack.
I can copy the URL from IE, and paste it into the open page dialog in FF,
and I get a normal non-access page.
So I tried to copy the non-access URL from FF, and paste it into the open
page dialog in IE, and it takes me to an access page in IE.

I am using Windows 7 64 bit and the latest IE for windows 7 and Jaws 18.
I'm thinking that this is a cookie problem.
I looked under my name-folder and found cookies, but windows treats it like
a file and asks me which program to open it with.
I had asked on another list and a good suggestion was to export my cookies
and then delete the cookie folder, and then import the cookies.
I did that, and with IE all closed out, but when I went back in, I still get
Amazon's access page.

I'm hoping for another suggestion.
Thanks.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS for Only $125?

2017-09-15 Thread Gerald Levy

Sorry, I don't think so. Eric clearly states that you must be an employee
of a company, agency or organization that has a VFO software license to be
eligible for the JAWS low-cost home use program. If you want to purchase
JAWS for personal use, you will have to pay full price, regardless of your
income or whether you are living on SSI or SSDI. Keep in mind that some
blind consumers who complain that they can't afford the high cost of JAWS
are already licking their chops to buy the new IPhone 8 for $799 without
batting an eyelash, so it's a matter of priorities. To be perfectly blunt,
anyone who is living on SSI or SSDI should not be shelling out hundreds of
dollars for a smart phone plus the $70 to $100 per month for service if they
can barely pay the rent or put food on the table.

Hi JAWS User List,

Just wanted to jump in and explain more about this opportunity. In
addition to the national trade shows, it's also something that is
available for anyone in the United States or Canada who is working at an
organization that owns a current version multiuser license JAWS, Fusion,
or ZoomText license. We call this the Home Use Program and it’s a great
deal that thousands of users currently take advantage of today. Modeled
after the "Microsoft User at Home Program" where employees at very large
organizations who own a certain level of office products, employees can
buy the subscription for home for about $10 per year.

For Freedom Scientific products, we offer prices for a new Home Edition
License of JAWS for just $125, regular price is $900. Fusion Home Edition
is just $150, regular price is $1200. ZoomText is just $100.
Upgrades from real old versions is also greatly reduced, and you can get
the SMAs discounted about 20%. Plus, once you are registered in the system
under the Home Use Program, you are entitled to a 20% discount on hardware
products, which can be a huge savings on something like a $2500 Braille
Display, where you can save up to $500.

If you work for an organization that has a multiuser license of any of the
Freedom Scientific or AiSquared products, please ask someone there about
the program. It cost them nothing to participate other than having their
license up to date. And the employees do the purchases direct with Freedom
Scientific so they are not involved in the transaction.

Most Federal and State agencies are already in it but hundreds of
companies and organizations are already signed up.

Eric

you can purchase a full copy of JAWS for a one-time payment of only $125, or

Hi, Laura.

Rose previously posted a message that was critical of the JAWS virtual
ribbon that I agree with. For one thing, it prevents you from using familiar
shortcuts. In a bigger picture sense that might or might not matter to you,
avoiding the regular Microsoft ribbon will make it more difficult to get
sighted assistance, since they won't know anything about the JAWS virtual
ribbon. For this and other reasons, I prefer to use the MS ribbons.

Each of us has a different way of learning the MS ribbons. Whenever
possible, I will use a shortcut instead of delving into the ribbon. For
example, I'll press control-d to get to the font dialog rather than go
hunting for it in the ribbon.

Another way of getting around the ribbons is to use the applications key,
between the right Windows and control keys on most keyboards. This is where
I go for the dialog that takes you through line-spacing, margins, etc.

But then there are the times when you must use the ribbon. Here, you may
find yourself remembering what are called key tips. For example, when I want
to place the page number at a certain point on a page (top left, top middle,
etc.), I press the following keys: alt+n together for "insert," and then n,
u in quick succession. I'm immediately in the right dialog.

When you explore the MS ribbons, listen carefully for these key tips. I find
they aren't always easy to hear, but usually I can make them out. The
example I just gave will be verbalized when you go through the "insert" part
of the ribbon.

I'm not pretending to give you an exhaustive explanation of the MS ribbons,
but I hope it might help you think about how to approach them. Shortcuts,
applications key, key tips, in that order of simplicity. When I first faced
the MS ribbons, I was intimidated. I shouldn't have been. Just learn what
you need as the need arises. And never hesitate to post questions here.

I would turn off the virtual ribbon. It is handy, but you become dependent
on them and they don't work as well as the original menus, since they don't
use first-letter navigation. I tried them briefly years ago and decided to

Not likely. Eric Damery has insisted for years that it is not possible for
JAWS to be modified to provide speech in safe mode. My understanding is
that Window Eyes provides speech in safe mode only because of a registry
hack. Of course, hacking the registry, especially for the technically
uninitiated could be very risky. Besides, Window Eyes is no longer being
supported, so unless you already have it installed on your computer, you may
not be able to download it any longer. There is another open source, free
screen reader that shall remain nameless that allegedly provides speech in
safe mode, but nobody has ever produced a podcast to demonstrate how this is
accomplished.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Safe Mode

2017-06-10 Thread Gerald Levy

I personally am not on Verizon, how ever my cousin is and since the change
over last week he can no longer access his email. It works here if I setup

Philadelphia.

He is getting an error 0x800ccc0f which defies an answer and believe me I
have looked.

Verizon stated that ultimately all the end user needed to do would be to
change their password and I did that for him along with the other stuff on
the server side of things. So just after that I checked his email here,
entered his new password when the prompt popped up and all is well here. On
his end though things are not working so well unfortunately. I figure there
are a lot of you out there using the same email service so somebody ran in

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws 17 and ms security essentials

2017-05-28 Thread Gerald Levy

It is not absolutely necessary to use the JAWS cursor to access the major
components of MSE. But you can obtain additional information by using it.
For instance, on the Home tab, switching to the JAWS cursor will provide
details about your most recent scan and whether your database definitions
are up to date. Using the JAWS cursor on the History tab will provide
details on any detected malware threats. But if you prefer not to use the
JAWS cursor, MSE will still work just fine with JAWS.

Yes, MSE is totally accessible with JAWS as long as you use the JAWS
cursor. This is probably the most accessible anti-virus program available,
although it may not necessarily be the highest-rated in terms of anti-virus
protection. But given the fact that both AVG and Avast are now both no
longer accessible, MSE is probably the best alternative for JAWS users.

Jarte uses the same classic menu structure as Wordpad, upon which it is

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Boy, Jarte is a great accessible word processor!

Hi Andy,

I owe you a great and hardy "Thank you" for telling us about Jarte! It is
just what I always wanted, a nice easy word processor that is fully
compatible with JAWS. It was easy to download and install. Folks will find
it to have a very familiar feel, and it is easy to explore the menus and
find all the features, everything I want, a few nice extras, but not as much
of the wild stuff the Microsoft Word program has. It also has a nice
regular old menu system.

So for those who did not notice his post, please consider Jarte. I can
already tell that I will use it a lot, perhaps as my default word processor.
It is certainly the solution for those who have only WordPad.

A post-installation note. When you first launch the program for the purpose
of real work, watch for the following. When you first go to open your file
list, the old familiar control + o key, you need to set the file type. By
default, it is set to RTF only, meaning that when you tab to the file list,
you will see only the folders, and only those files that are in RTF format.

Instead, tab to the file type field, and Arrow down to the format you want
to see in the file list, or arrow down to the bottom, about 5 times, to the
all-format view. Whatever format option you choose, just press enter.
Then, just do the shift tab a couple of times and there is the list of all
folders, and depending upon your file type selection discussed above, your
list of files. If you do not do this step, you will see only the list of
folders, if any, and only RTF files, if any, in the folder. I assume there
is a way to set the default file type, but I have not learned that much yet,
and for beginners of Jarte, it is probably best to just check the file type
box each time, or you will be greatly confused wondering where your files
and folders are!

I put in below the link to the Jarte web page that contains the description
of features. On that same page is also the download link. The installation
file you download is small, less than 4 mb. Installation was completely
perfect and easy, both for accessibility and for clarity.

The link is below, just past my name. Thanks again Andy!

Hi Jo,

You need MS Word to open this file. The file extension, .doc, is the old
file extension for MS Word prior to Word 2007, & possibly 2003, but I'm not
sure about 2003. If you have a newer version of Word installed, you will
also need to have the, Compatibility Pack, installed. This program allows
newer versions of Office to open, read, & edit older files from older Office

If you need to know how to assign a program to open this file, now this is a
totally different set of steps. First we need to know if you have Office

Microsoft Security Essentials is probably the most JAWS-accessible
anti-virus program for Windows 7 users. Other anti-virus programs like
Avast and AVG may offer superior protection, but they have become so
inaccessible to the point that they are no longer worth considering. For
most blind computer users, MSE should provide adequate protection as long as

Miriam, you can access the following page to get separate 7 day forecasts
for each borough/county in the metro NYC area, including separate forecasts
for northern and southern Nassau County (Westbury would probably be
considered southern Nassau, right?). Just do a JAWS search for "nassau" and
then create a place marker at that point for easy access, and then save this

Re: [JAWS-Users] 32 or 64 bit pc

2017-04-14 Thread Gerald Levy

This is definitely on topic for this list. To get system information for
your computer including whether it is 32 or 64 bit, press Windows key-Pause
and use the JAWS cursor to read the information. The Pause key is the top
right-most key on your keyboard above the numpad.

[JAWS-Users] Weather Underground Acting Strangely

2017-04-01 Thread Gerald Levy

I turned on my computer this morning at 6:00, and the first thing I did was
check the Weather Underground Braille page, and lo and behold, there was the
ten day forecast for New York City. Great, I thought. Weather Underground is
finally fixed. But I just accessed it again, and this time the ten day
forecast was missing. Why did it disappear in the two hours since I first
accessed the page? This site is apparently all screwed up, and as long as the
ten day forecast is displayed intermittently without any rhyme or reason, the
JAWS Research It weather function will never work.

I spoke to a Verizon customer service agent who confirmed that Verizon is in
the process of phasing out its email service and migrating customers to AOL or
other providers. Not all regions are affected yet, and Verizon customers will
receive an email notification with instructions on how to proceed when the time
comes for them to switch . Also, there will be a notification on the
customer’s Verizon account page when it comes time to switch. In the meantime,
Verizon customers can learn more about the impending discontinuation of email
service by bisiting the following page:

[JAWS-Users] Weather Underground Still Not Working

2017-03-31 Thread Gerald Levy

I just checked the Braille pages for Weather Underground for New York City,
Westbury, NY, Chicago, and Los Angeles, and in each case, only the current
weather conditions and special weather statements are displayed, with no
current day or ten day forecasts. So for now, I am using Weather.com to get
the then day forecast for New York City. If you want an alternative to Weather
Underground for ten day forecasts, just google something like “ten day forecast
for 12345” (where 12345 is your zip code) and see what results are returned and
use the one that is most accessible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] email registration recapcha

2017-01-21 Thread Gerald Levy

There are three programs for solving image captchas that work with JAWS.
The most popular is a free add-on called Webvisum that works with Firefox
and uses a proprietary algorithm for solving captchas. Once you install the
Webvisum add-on, you press Alt-Control-numrow 6 on the page that contains
the image captcha. Webvisum then solves it and returns the result on your
clipboard ready to be pasted into the appropriate edit field. Another image
solving program is called Rumola, which costs 99 cents a year. It works
with both Firefox and IE, and uses sighted human operators to solve
captchas. The third program is called Captcha Be Gone, which, like Rumola,
uses human operators to solve captchas and works with Firefox and IE, and
now Google Chrome as well. But it costs $33 a year, which is a steep price
to pay if you only need to solve captchas on an infrequent basis.

Hi Mike,
sorry about that, I'm speaking about windows 10 here, and while I've found
the folder for favorites using the previous message, I'm not completely sure
if I simply just go in to the folder and highlight all and copy what's
there, and then just put that in the other folder on the laptop computer?
thanks,

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have always been under the impression that the only
way to transfer favorites from one computer to another is to use the
Import/Export option on the IE File menu. You use the export option to save
the favorites list to a file which you copy to an external hard drive or
flash drive. You then use the import option on the new computer to import
the favorites file saved on the external drive. Or am I missing something?

Hi Bill, Yes, just go in to the favorites folder. Press Control+a, to select
all, control+c, to copy. Open the flash drive, control+v, to paste, the
contents of the favorites folder on to the flash drive. Plug-in the flash
drive in to your new computer, control+a, to select all, control+c, to copy,
go to the favorites folder on your new computer. Open the favorites folder,
control+v, to paste the contents of the favorites folder on to your new
computer. Now when you open IE, when you do a ALT+a, to open favorites, you
will see all your IE favorites. I hope this helps...

Re: [JAWS-Users] captcha help

2016-12-06 Thread Gerald Levy

The whole purpose of these captcha solving services is to automatically
solve image captchas without sighted help of any kind. Rumola works with IE
and costs 99 cents for 100 credits, which are good for a year. You
basically install Rumola on the IE Favorites Bar, and whenever you encounter
a web page that contains an image captcha, you launch Rumola from the
favorites bar, and it will solve the captcha and place the result in the
correct edit field. Each time you solve a captcha, one credit will be
deducted from your account. I have not tried Captcha Be Gone, and so cannot
vouch for its effectiveness. For more information about Rumola:

Yes, you are exactly correct. Normally, you need sighted assistance to
solve image captchas, but services like Captcha Be Gone, Rumola and Webvisum
attempt to solve them for you without the need for sighted help. They work
very well most of the time, but once in a while, they may encounter a
captcha that they cannot solve. Because it is free, Webvisum is the most
popular of these captcha-solving services. But it only works with Firefox.
When using Firefox with Webvisum, and you encounter a web page that contains
an image captcha, you press the keystroke Alt-Control-numrow 6 to submit the
captcha to Webvisum for decoding. Using some kind of proprietary algorithm,
Webvisum solves the captcha and places the result on your clipboard, ready
to be pasted into the appropriate edit field. It is quick and convenient,
and works about 90 percent of the time. Captcha Be Gone and Rumola rely on
sighted human operators to solve image captchas, and so their success rate
tends to be higher.

Hi Kevin!

I have found that sometimes, JAWS will read the check box label
twice, one with the checkbox at the end, and the other sometimes with
and sometimes without the checkbox.

In the case where only one label has the checkbox, it's obvious which
one is the correct one to check, but when they both seem to have the
checkbox, it gets tricky.

What I've found that often helps, is to up arrow to the previous
input field or control, then tab back to the checkbox. Most of the
time tab will land you on the one that works.

Sometimes they use lists item for the various imput fileds, this is
OK for input fields, but for buttons and other controls it can create
a problem if both the list item and the control are selected, which
won't work, often attempts to activate the control are ignored
because they go to the list item instead. Tab will insure that only
the control is selected, which does work.

Tom, this is definitely not off-topic. Using Firefox 47, I was able to
access this web site without any difficulty. A few members of other lists
have reported web accessibility problems with Firefox 48 an 49, so perhaps
this is the reason you are getting an error message. I suggest installing
the portable version of Firefox 47 and see whether you can access this site
with it. Note that you can have both the full and the portable versions of
Firefox installed on the same computer.

I hope this is not considered off topic, but I'm not sure if the following

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Any Tips for Using Windows Live Mail with JAWS v17?

Hello,

Even though I do like how well JAWS v17 works with the default Mail app for
Windows 10, I still gave the Windows Live Mail application a try. It seems
to work even better with JAWS, and offers a whole lot more bells and
whistles (News reader, Podcast and RSS feeds etc.).

Are there any FS (Or user) tutorials out there giving tips on how to
interact with WLM using JAWS? Maybe a list of all available keyboard
shortcuts.

One of the things I did like with the default mail app is that it gave you
the number of replies for a particular thread in the subject line. WLM doesn’t
seem to do that. Is there a way of enabling this?

Also does WLM offer a message view pain. Meaning as you arrow through the
list of message subjects, a portion of the associated message body will be
shown in a view window pain. If WLM does offer such a feature, how do I turn
it on.

I’m very surprised that MS stop development on WLM for it seems to be much
more advanced then the new Mail app they’ve replaced it with.

Thanks for any help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Printers and Openbook

2016-09-11 Thread Gerald Levy

Buying an accessible multifunction printer/scanner is problematic these days
because many of them have LCD displays with menus that require sighted help
to navigate or else have graphical onscreen menus that are not accessible
with JAWS. And models change so frequently that a model that was previously
accessible just a year or so ago may have been replaced by a similar model
that is no longer accessible. Maybe someone on this list who has purchased
a multifunction printer/scanner recently can provide the brand and model
number and describe how accessible it is without sighted help. As a general
rule, single-purpose printers and scanners are more likely to be accessible
without sighted help than multifunction models because they are less
complicated. am in the market myself for a new printer but prefer a single
purpose model because my Epson Perfection 4490 scanner still works fine with
Open Book, and so I have no reason to replace it.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about installing an add-on in Firefox with JAWS 17 Latest Build

2016-07-15 Thread Gerald Levy

You are probably trying to install the “old” unsigned version of Webvisum
which will not work with Firefox 47. Since Firefox 45, Mozilla has blocked
the installation of unsigned, third-party add-ons like Webvisum for security
reasons. The original developers of Webvisum abandoned it years ago and
never signed it, and so it no longer works. You must instead install the
newly “revived” and signed version of Webvisum, which you can download from
the following Blind Bargains page, which also contains installation
instructions:

Hello, everyone.

I have just noticed a problem on the newly-acquired Windows 7 laptop I'm
working with.

When I insert a media storage device into one of the USB ports, such as an
external hard drive, or a thumb drive, the computer gives me the sound
indicating that the device is recognized. However, the device is not listed
as an available device under "My Computer".

The only way I can get the new device to come up under "my computer" is to
shut down and then re-boot the computer.

Is there a setting that I need to change in Windows 7 to get these external
devices to be automatically recognized and listed in the usual way?

I'm using Windows 7 and Jaws 17 here.

Hi Gerald,

MWB 2.2.1 is mostly accessible. The biggest hurdle a person will have is
trying to set automatic schedules in Settings / Automated Scheduling.
I've

attempted to explained these, Spin Edit Boxes below.

When trying to set a schedule in the new version of MWB, they're called,
Spin Edit Box, fields. I had my wife help me with them. They are not
accessible with Jaws no matter what cursor you're using. I'll try to
explain how they're layed out.
Note: When you open the add schedule option, the correct date & time are
showing, also, in all fields you up arrow for later / higher numbers &
down

arrow for earlier / lower numbers:

In the 1st field are months, 1 thru 12, that you arrow up / down to choose
the month you want. Up arrow for a later month, & down arrow for an
earlier
month. The current month will be showing by default.

The 2nd field is the date field, 1 thru 31, you arrow up / down to choose
the date you want. The current date will be showing by default.

The 3rd field is the year field, beats the hell out of me what year it
starts or ends. Arrow up for a later year, & arrow down for an earlier
year. Remember the current year will be showing by default.

The next field, is the hour field, the current hour will be showing by
default.

The next field, is the minute field, & the current minute will be showing.
You get to zero minutes by down arrowing.

The next field, is the seconds field, & the current second will be
showing.

You get to zero seconds by down arrowing.

The next field, is the A M / PM field. Depending on the time of day, the
correct option will be showing, & I have ran out of sighted help. Sorry
about that.

All other comboboxes, are accessible with Jaws using your up / down arrow
keys.

Take care.
