Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Adobe is what you need. Go to the acrobat site and download it. When I tried to open it straight from the email it opened in edge and I couldn't read anything. After I saved it to a folder in my documents and went to open it I got a list of programs I could use to open it but all I tried couldn't display the document. I tried opening it in notepad and got a lot of rubbish instead of what it was meant to be. So now I am wondering what the best program to use with Jaws 2018 and windows 10 is and where can I get it from? I've been having trouble making the person on the other end understand what format I need because the first time she sent it to me it was a picture which of course Jaws couldn't read so I asked her to send it again in a word file. She then sent me a screen shot of the document so again I had to explain that jaws doesn't read pictures and asked again for a word version. She is working on an iPad so she didn't have access to word so she finally sent me the PDF version. I'm afraid that this too will be a picture rather than an actual PDF but to find this out I need a program that will open it. Thanks for any help. >From Shaz. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Hi. I use a little programme called qRead for non-image pdfs most of the time. It loads a lot quicker than Adobe and doesn't crash, so I appreciate it. The programme costs about $30 US as I recall and I don't regret the investment. For image PDFs, I use Adobe Acrobat Pro, which can OCR the documents and generally gets better results than JAWS does. . Note that this isn't the same as Adobe Reader and while it actually came with this pC and thus I didn't pay for it myself, I don't think it's cheap to purchase. An OCR package can do the things you want. Examples of those are Abbyy FineReader, on the mainstream (and much cheaper) end of things, or Open Book, and I guess, KNFB Reader. If you don't have or want any of those, you should definitely try the jAWS OCR feature as well, which most people have suggested to you. I have not really ever met with great results from this, but hey, at least it works and is a nice feature. It was also improved greatly in JAWS 2018, however I only have the demo of that, and the one time I tried to OCR a picture of a lot of text the results I got were completely unusable still. That wasn't a PDF though, and the printing was weird, so you may meet with better results. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Sharon S Sent: June 20, 2018 12:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop to read these. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Sharon, You can read a pdf with Adobe reader or Acrobat reader. But Jaws2018 can OCR / scan a pdf, so you donn't need a program. When in explorer select de pdf. Press the application key and press j. The option is: recognise with Jaws. The ressult is not allways even good as with an real pdf program, but you can scan the pdf. Also when the pdf is an image. I thought that Word 2016 can also open pdf files. And Jaws2018 can also use Edge, but it is not on by default. Go to settingscenter by ressing ins-f2. Go to default config with ctrl-shift-d. TGype: edge and arrow down. Here you can turn on Edge suport. If you find it will cause problems, then you can turn it off the same way. regards, marten On Thu, 21 Jun 2018 02:51:40 +1000 "Sharon S" wrote: > Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as > possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop > to read these. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
if you have jaws 2018 it might be able to be read by opening a context menu on the file and use the jaws o c r to read it.. you have to wait a few seconds before it is processed. *** the most popular pdf reader is adobe reader dc. but this one will not convert a image file, if this is what it is. you can also try useing the on line robo brail to convert the file to another format. http://robobraille.org/ -Original Message- From: Sharon S Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2018 9:51 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop to read these. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Hi, Sharon, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. You can read that document with jaws. Here are the instructions: 1. First hit insert plus your space bar. 2. Then hit the letter o and you will hear jaws say ocr. 3. Then hit the letter d which will tell jaws that this is a document. You will then hear jaws say ocr started. Once jaws completes the ocr scan, it will start reading the document to you. Let me know if you need further assistance and I'll be glad to help you out. This definitely is an awesome feature of jaws 2018. Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Which version of JAWS are you using? 2018 will handle most PDF files, and a few earlier versions can work with many. Also, do you have Acrobat Reader installed, ideally version DC? Here, you'll want to set online PDF files to open in Acrobat rather than your browser. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Sharon S Sent: Wednesday, June 20, 2018 12:52 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs Hi all, I have been sent a document I really need to read as soon as possible but it is a PDF and it appears I don't have a program on my laptop to read these.
