Re: [JAWS-Users] Reading guitar tabs with Jaws

2015-01-04 Thread Michele Thredgold
This all sounds very interesting. I am a professional musician and vocalist,
but I play piano. Is there any software out there compatible with JAWS, apart
from the Lime Aloud software, enabling music composition? Also, are there any
apps or website which would allow for reading piano charts? I play mostly by
ear but with certain songs such as the old jazz standards, charts are often a
great help. I would also like to be able to be able to read and write lead
sheets, and to be able to use a musical keyboard as a composition tool,
connected to a PC, using JAWS. Is this possible? If not, is it something which
FS might look at? Lime Aloud is not as user-friendly as Sibelius was nor as
friendly as some of the other musical programs I've heard of.

Thanks.

Michele

No kidding. Here I thought it would be a straight forward process. Little did
I know...I use YouTube a lot and have found it to be an overall great
resource to learn a new song or rifs and other tricks, but the problem with
it is that often the quality of the instruction is entirely dependant on the
person describing what they are doing. I've found some people who are really
good at detailing what their fingers are doing and the chord progression, but
it's still too hit and miss. That and if you want to learn the finger picking
and other accompaniments and not just the chords, then it's even harder.

There's an ultimate guitar app for iOS that some blind folks have talked
about, but I guess accessibility was broken with an update. Seems accessible
enough to me, but again, Voiceover just reads E---c-But—0 etc. So I don't
know what they're doing to be able to decipher what VO is saying.

I'm still getting used to the termonology from Spanish to English. C=do,
re=Do G=Sol and so on so it's that much more awkward too.

I did hear of one recourse called Talking Tabs discussed on another mailing
list, but their site: www.talking tabs.com gbrings up a service unavailable
page so who knows what happened there.
I also found something called LunarTabsPro:
 https://code.google.com/p/lunartabspro/
Looks to be some sort of project to make electric guitar tabs accessible, but
they specifically mention that Jaws may or may not work with it and recommend
using NVDA. I'm not all keen on diving down the rabbit hole of learning
another screen reader just for this. Maybe in the future when I have more
time, but that's not necessarily a priority right now.

Anyway...I too would be interested in any information or resources that would
make guitar tab reading accessible with Jaws.

 Hi Cristóbal,

I have been playing guitar for over 35 years now, and used tabs quite abit
before losing my sight, but since then, I have found nothing to make the
reading of it easy. That is not to say that there is nothing available, I
just haven't found it from the searching that I have done. I am fully capable
of playing by ear and improvising where I need to, so not having the
tabs has not hurt me that much. I usually used
this to learn tricky parts in songs which were confusing. Tabs are one of the
best inovations in the world of stringed instruments to have come along in
probably centuries. If you do find a resource, please post it for all to s ee.

and dashes and so on, it sounds like Jaws is just reading a bunch of
gibberish. Can anyone recommend a better method or tips on how to decipher
these hieroglyphics with JFW. My guitar learning was all done in Spanish. So
I'm also trying to get used to the notes in English.

My ear is not the best, and I would like to be able to read guitar tabs as
well. The guitar is my six string laptop!
