URGENT: A Second Anti-Venezuela Resolution to be Introduced Tomorrow in the
House. Please contact your representative today!

This Wednesday, Congressman Dan Burton (R-IN) intends to introduce a resolution
in the House condemning Venezuela for supposedly not cooperating with the
United States in the fight against narco- trafficking. Much like Connie Mack’s
Anti-Venezuela resolution, which was introduced earlier this year, the Burton
Resolution is also filled with distorted facts and half truths
http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=121006275url_num=1url=http://www.rethinkvenezuela.com/downloads/burtonres.htm
that paint an inaccurate picture of the situation (more details below).

What You Can Do:
Please contact your House representative today! There are three ways to help:

1) Click here to send a letter to your representative.
http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=121006275url_num=2url=http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/organizationsORG/VIO/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=3658
If you are not sure who your representative is, it’s ok! Our software will
automatically identify your representative based on your home zip code.

2) Call your Representative to tell him/her that this ill-conceived
legislation is filled with inaccuracies and will do nothing to improve U.S.
Venezuela relations. The Congressional Switchboard can patch you through. Just
call 202-224-3121.

3) Share this alert with your friends and colleagues. Please pass it on far
and wide.

Last March, your faxes and phone calls convinced Rep. Mack to pull his
anti-Venezuela legislation. We need your help again, because the stakes could
be even higher.

What the Burton Resolution Says:
The resolution argues that Venezuela is not doing enough to combat drug
trafficking. While it is non-binding, the strategy is to create a public
record of condemnation that may be used to justify more direct measures against
Venezuela in the future. Like the Mack Resolution, it is another tool to
discredit the Venezuelan government during an election year and even to justify
intervention. Also like the Mack Resolution, it is based on some conspicuously
bad information:

1) The Burton Resolution claims that drug trafficking “significantly
increased” in Venezuela last year. In reality, Venezuelan drug seizures were
on the increase, meaning that enforcement was way up, not an increase in
trafficking.

2) The resolution cites a high-profile case of an airplane filled with
cocaine that was seized in Mexico last month as an example of Venezuela’s
supposed lack of enforcement. The implication simply ignores the fact that
tips from Venezuelan officials led to seizure in the first place.

3) The resolution claims that the Venezuelan government does not publicize
its drug seizure statistics, which is simply a false statement.

There are many more distorted facts in the resolution. To see the rest, check
out our fact sheet
http://www.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?key=121006275url_num=3url=http://www.rethinkvenezuela.com/downloads/burtonres.htm
 here.

public about contemporary Venezuela, and receives its funding from the

government of Venezuela. More information is available from the FARA office

[LAAMN] [ChiapasNetwork05] Cop Watch LA Report on the South Central Farm

2006-05-23 Thread Anna Kunkin

View the story here on Indy Media with photos from the vigil (police
involvement) and the video of the police helicopter from the benefit concert:
http://la.indymedia.org/news/2006/05/159540.php
Cop Watch LA Report on the South Central Farm: Police intimidate the
community and Prepare to Attack

  Tuesday May 16th, 2006

Cop Watch Los Angeles, was present at a vigil, organized by the
Friends of the South Central Farm, at Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s house.
There were 50 people protesting, and holding up signs, chanting, and drumming.
The Los Angeles Police Department also had a presence. They
harassed and ticketed people who drove by and honked in support of the
protesters. Their excuse for honking people who honked was that, any noise
that was considered undesirable (meaning that anything that was above the
current noise level) was considered illegal or unlawful. They used this to
also attack the protestors who were drumming and chanting. They said they
would detain everyone who was playing the drums (if we didn’t identify a
leader). They were going to take down everyone’s information there (name,
address, etc). At this point an individual chose to identify himself as the
leader (for the purpose of diffusing the police harassment). Cop Watch took
down the police contact information as well (name and badge number) and we
maintained a presence at the vigil as long as the police did as well.

  Friday May 19th, 2006

The South Central Farmers were having a benefit concert at the
farm with guests Tom Morello, Aztlan Underground, Quetzal, Union 13, Sol de
Centro and others. Cop Watch LA received an emergency call from the a friend
of the farm (Code Red Alert), and told us that there were over 4 cop cars
patrolling the farm and that police had allowed themselves to enter the farm
(under orders of their “superiors” a.k.a. the Sheriff’s department).
Members of Cop Watch LA showed up with cameras and took down
reports from the organizers of the event. When we first got there we saw the
presence of the police around the farm. Talking to some of the organizers of
the SCF, they told us that the police had mentioned that they would have a
permanent presence at the farm. The LAPD spoke to one of the organizers asking
questions about the organizations who are involved in the support of the farm,
their level of militancy, and also asked about their plans for civil
disobedience. At one point a police helicopter circled the farm, shinning
their light on the concert, circled a couple of times and left.
The police are overtly trying to intimidate the community and
supporters of the South Central Farm, as they prepare to attempt to oust the
farmers. They’re also trying to assess the amount of support they have and
from whom. So they can strategize for the groups that are going to defend the
farm.

Cop Watch Los Angeles supports the South Central Farm and will be there to
observe and document the law enforcement’s role and attacks on the farmers and
their supporters. Cop Watch LA also provides security for the people.

If you wish to get involved contact Cop Watch Los Angeles at:

  [EMAIL PROTECTED]
  (562) 252-8501
  www.myspace.com/copwatchla

COPWATCH Los Angeles is a program committed to the struggle that will end
police brutality through observing and monitoring the pigs, offer support for
those caught in the criminal (in)justice system, fight for the change without
reformist consciousness, and ultimately work side-by-side with liberated
communities to create revolutionary alternatives to policing, prisons, and
systems of domination, oppression and exploitation.

  Our Goals:
-Form neighborhood patrols within communities we live in
-Offer support to those people and their families harassed, brutalized and/or
murdered by law enforcement agencies
-Share resources, training and support with communities interested in
creating a COPWATCH program
-Organize educational events, start a newsletter and develop intelligence
through research and study groups
-Participate in the process of building autonomy, self-determination, and the
self-organization of our many communities.

Red Alert Red Alert Red Alert
Encampment and tree sit to resist the eviction and save the South Central
Farm has begun!! The L.A. County Sheriffs Department has received notice to
execute the eviction of the farmers and supporters at the South Central Farm.
The Farm and farmers need your help now!!
If you are willing to encamp with us our legal team will offer counsel and
you will also be given a, Know Your Rights Training as you will be risking
arrest. There is also a Unity Principles form which all participants in the
encampment must sign in order to be part of the community tree sit/ encampment.
The greater the numbers encamped increases our chances of success. Those who
cannot stay in the farm can still help us by coming to daily vigils, becoming
legal observers and bringing supplies to those inside. Bring a chair or
anything you would need to be an active witness.

The time has come to show the politicians, developer and global community
that we are serious about environmental justice in South Central Los Angeles.
The greening of L.A. starts with the preservation of the South Central Farm.
Bombard the local officials with calls and emails to save this oasis. We want a
livable city!! We want the Farm!!

FYI: The Trust for Public Land is no longer fundraising for us. The
contract has expired and we are once again standing alone defending our dignity.

Friends,
I've been staying at the farm when I can. There is
much hope there. Please find a way to help out.
Please don't ever believe that you are powerless to
shape your world, your city, community, or yourself.
All things are possible, and we need to work together,
everyone of us, so we can see miracles.

- Daniel French
http://www.southcentralfarmers.org

Below is a note from the support committee of the S.
Central Farm...

We still need your support!

Day 9 of the Community Encampment:

As the threat of impending eviction looms, South
Central Farm needs your support to preserve the
nations largest urban farm, which serves as a 14-acre
oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. This 14-year
old community gem functions as an active farm for more
than 350 families and fills a local community need for
fresh produce, green space and a safe haven in a
poverty-stricken region of Los Angeles.

What you can do:

1) Come to South Central Farm to join in our community
encampment and tree sit.

2) Attend an informational training session at the
farm tomorrow (Thursday) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to
learn effective strategies to support the farmers. If
you cant attend the whole session, come for as long as
you can!

3) Donate to support the South Central Farmers effort
to buy the land and maintain it as a community farm.

4) Drop off supplies used for camping and food at the
farm.

5) Walk around the farm every morning, from about 5
a.m. to 9 a.m.. Some believe the sheriffs will
attempt an eviction at dawn, which means really early.
It would be helpful for us all if there were
witnesses who just happended to be walking by, or
doing their morning walk etc... to be there, hopefully
with cameras, just in case something goes down.

6) Candlelight vigil every night at the farm, 7 p.m.
A profound procession in support of the S. Central
Farm.

7) Forward this message to friends and family!

To find out more or make a donation, please go to
http://www.southcentralfarmers.org.

By saving this farm we are establishing a precedent,
which prioritizes central, local food production, safe
open space for children, and the greening of America.

Julia Butterfly Hill, who is tree-sitting in the heart
of the farm, and has been fasting for 16 days, said
today We have to make our cities more livable so
people stop leaving them in order to live. Until
recently, the concept of sustainability has been
predominantly an option available only for the
wealthy. This project is about making sustainability
available for all.

Join us. Support the South Central Farmers to resist
the destruction of the South Central Farm.

Thank you,

South Central Farmers and Supporters Host Westside Parade This Saturday, 1
p.m.

Los Angeles – The July 12 Superior Court case, questioning the legality of
the sale of the South Central Farm back to the developer Ralph Horowitz, is
open to media, and supporters urge all media representatives to attend. Please
register in advance to attend, see information below.

The Final Status Conference is presently scheduled for 9:30 a.m., July 12, in
Dept. 18 of the downtown Superior Court. Judge Helen Bendix will be the trial
judge. Trial testimony may not begin on July 12 because the judge will have to
rule on a number of motions and other matters before the trial itself begins.
Trial testimony is expected to begin in the afternoon of the 12th or on the
following day. The judge will let us know
  on July 12.

Media who want to have television or videotape cameras in the courtroom need
to get clearance in advance from the judge. To do so, they have to submit a
Form 980 to the public information office at the courthouse. The form is
available on the courthouse website, www.lasuperiorcourt.org in the section
marked News and Media. After filling out the form, the news organization or
filmmaker seeking to have a camera in the courtroom should fax the form to the
public information office at the following fax number: (213) 621-7642. For
more information, interested media people can call the public information
office at (213) 974-5227.

The South Central Farm supporters and farmers will hold another Family
Friendly Parade in Santa Monica this Saturday, July 1 starting at Reed Park on
700 Wilshire Blvd. Farmers and children are available to interview at 1 pm on
the corner of California Ave. and Lincoln Blvd. They will be making statements
about the drastic effect the eviction from South Central Farm continues to have
on their lives. Volunteers and supporters will be available, as well.

The Parade is an important and lively opportunity to reach out into the
community to spread the word about the South Central Farm and raise support.
Last week over one hundred farmers and supporters marched in a colorful and
enthusiastic Venice boardwalk parade dispensing plants from the farm,
literature about Farm-based community events and education about the growing
battle to protect the nation’s largest urban farm, South Central Farm. It’s
not over yet.

SOS Plans To Go Back To Baldwin Park

The Save Our State Organization will be going back to Baldwin Park to conduct
another protests against the monument.

TAKEN FROM THE SAVE OUR STATE INTERNET SITE:*

As a result of our brand of aggressive, in your face activism and the response
that has been displayed by our opponents, Americans are growing more and more
emboldened and empowered to take a stand against the 'reconquistas.' Americans
are beginning to learn how serious the illegal immigration problem is becoming.

Americans are tired of the unchecked third world invasion of illegal aliens.
They are tired of porous borders open to terrorist exploitation. They are tired
of watching millions of illegal aliens and their anchor babies flood our
schools and devastate the quality of learning afforded to our very own
children. They are tired of illegal aliens abusing emergency rooms for medical
treatment which has resulted in numerous closings and subsequent loss of
services to the taxpaying public. They are tired of watching their great
American culture disappear, only to watch it be replaced by other cultures that
are inferior and contradictory to everything this country was built upon.

AMERICANS ARE TIRED OF FEELING LIKE A FOREIGNER IN THEIR OWN COUNTRY.

For too long, our citizens have desecrated the memory of our great founding
fathers as they stood quietly by and allowed this devastation to occur. Enough
is enough. We have reached the point where we can no longer sit back and allow
our government to aid and abet the illegal alien invasion. We must respond as
our founding fathers would have responded. We must refresh the tree of liberty.

We are angry! We are seething with anger and boiling with rage.

And we are motivated and determined to fight back. This is our land. This is
our fight. And we are willing to bleed to defend it.

We have seen a rapid escalation in violence and posturing by our enemies. The
Baldwin Park and Garden Grove attacks demonstrate the fear we are instilling in
our enemies. They are not accustomed to being confronted and challenged.

Gone are the days of the old paradigm where Americans reacted to the whims and
actions of our open borders opponents. Gone are the days when we allowed our
opponents to define the terminology of the debate.

Save Our State was founded on the belief that we could create a new paradigm. A
paradigm which consists of taking the battle to our opponents on our terms;
ensuring that our enemies respond to our actions.

Although we do not seek out violence, it must be said that we will not run from
it. Although we seek to peacefully defend and protect our national sovereignty,
we will not be fearful or intimidated. We must not acquiesce and we must not
retreat.

Make no mistake, our opponents are savages. In a pack, they grow incredibly
brave. When alone they are as impotent as a church mouse. Our foes rely on
fear, intimidation and the threat of violence in order to achieve victory. We
must not waver and we must not withdraw from the fight. We must stand strong
and beat back the enemy. For this is the only thing our opponents understand.

Many suggest that violence is coming to California. Many suggest that a civil
war of sorts may be on the horizon. I cannot control the actions of our
opponents. For they ultimately decide whether or not violence will break out
over this issue that is tearing our nation apart.

Save Our State will not initiate violence. However, in no way will we attempt
to appease our enemy out of fear that they might resort to violence.

The monument in Baldwin Park is not just a rock. It is a disgusting testament
to how pathetically apathetic Americans have grown in response to the hostile
takeover attempt by the Mechistas and the massive illegal alien invasion. It is
a slap in the face to all Americans and an insult to us all.

We have a patriotic obligation to ensure that the seditious language on that
monument is removed. And one way or another, it will be removed. Together, we
will drive a stake through the heart of the 'reconquista' movement. This is
American land. Today. Tomorrow. Forever.

Baldwin Park, CA
Corner of Pacific Downing (at Metrolink Rail Station)

12 PM - 2 PM
Saturday, June 25th

Please bring your own signs and/or American flags. It is imperative that you
spread the word.

Anyone bringing any racist signs, clothing, regalia, etc. will be ejected from
our group. Obviously, we cannot control who comes out to protest. However, in
no shape or form will Save Our State be affiliated with any supremacist
organizations.

Fyi,

for those interested in an analysis of what's happening in Chiapas right
now, please read Hilary's comments below, who just wrote this today.
Hilary has worked and lived in Chiapas for over 6 years with communities
down there, and just recently returned. i trust her analysis.

in fact it was hilary who was invaluable when i went down to Chiapas to
help provide resources and support to the formation of the Chiapas IMC. If
people want to contact her directly for an interview, or other
information, please let me know.

Subject: my thoughts about the red alert in chiapas...

Here are some of my thoughts and impressions about what is happening right
now in Chiapas. In my effort to write one letter and communicate with a
lot of people, please forgive me that I am writing to some people who are
following this very closely and already know a lot about what is happening
and to other people who may not have known what was happening in Chiapas
or have much background information? Feel free to pass this letter along
to other people who are interested, send it to lists or publish it on the
internet, etc. I think the best places to look for news and comunicados
are the Frente (www.fzln.org.mx) and Indymedia (chiapas.indymedia.org) web
pages. much love to all, Hilary

It feels odd to be here again, sitting in front of a computer screen,
trying to collect my thoughts in order to share what?s going on with
people in other places. It reminds me of 1998... (a year of a lot of
tension and many military operations against the Zapatista communities).
The main difference is that now information is available on the internet
so quickly that you all may get news as soon as we do here. But I can try
and share a little bit more detail about what is happening here, what it
might mean, and what it feels like here.

On Sunday night we found out from people in the communities that the
Juntas de Buen Gobierno (the Good Government Councils) were packing up and
leaving, that everything in the Caracoles (the Zapatista Centers of
Resistance) was being packed up and taken away and that the Zapatista
support base was on red alert.

Sunday night there was also a comunicado that basically sends all three
political parties to hell and says the whole political system is shit. It
criticizes the PRI and the PAN, but the EZLN?s scorn for these two right
wing parties is nothing new. But it also focuses on the PRD (a more
progressive party) and Lopez Obrador, responding to everything that
happened in the last few months with the desafuero (the Fox government?s
attempt to charge Lopez Obrador with some petty crime and keep him from
running for president next year. After a huge public outcry, he backed
down.) Marcos says that Lopez Obrador should not be mistaken for a
populist hero and that if he were president, his government would continue
with the same neoliberal plans. That comunicado ends with a statement that
the sixth hour has arrived and that it is time for the EZLN to struggle
against all of the above.

Also on Sunday night, the Mexican Army?s only response was that they had
burned down marijuana plants in Zapatista territory. Clearly an effort to
discredit the Zapatistas and a refusal to take the Zapatista?s political
statements seriously.

Monday afternoon a comunicado came out declaring the red alert, stating
that all five Caracoles were being closed and that the Juntas would be
operating clandestinely from now on. It also asked members of civil
society to leave Zapatista territory (or if they want to stay, they stay
at their own risk) and cut any ties between the EZLN and outside
supporters. My interpretation is that this comunicado is an effort to
protect the support base, the autonomous authorities, and Zapatista
supporters. By evacuating the Caracoles, they protect not only the
authorities that might be in danger in the near future, but they also
trying to make sure that the Mexican army does not have an excuse to
attack the communities themselves. Likewise for the Zapatista supporters,
it is a way of saying--these people are not linked to us so do not
persecute them because of their relationship to us. (There is history of
Zapatista supporters facing government repression, people close to the
Zapatistas being arrested, etc.)

Many NGO?s at first were saying that the red alert was a defensive
response to a lot of movement of the Mexican military in recent weeks. I
think this analysis is mistaken (and tends to see the Zapatistas only as
victims of human rights violations as opposed to actors in creating
history). I don?t think that the red alert was a defensive move or that
the EZLN feared a government attack. I think it was part of their own

One of the lawyers representing the farmers has discovered that Ralph

Representatives from the mayor's office have informed the farmers that a permit

People with Direct Action experience are being asked to go to the farm to

[LAAMN] Fwd: [SCFs] WHO OWNS THE FARM? by Lila Garrett

WHO OWNS THE FARM? by Lila Garrett
In Los Angeles, the 16 million dollar question is who owns the 14 acres in
South Central Los Angeles, affectionately referred to as The Farm. Is it
the City? Is it developer Ralph Horowitz? He certainly thinks so and
before the courts had a chance to disagree he had a bulldozer come in last
week and level a big patch of edible green into a mud hole. It was heart
stopping. Aside from the legal issues, there are gnawing questions like, do you
rip 350 people from their land which feeds their families, beautifies the area
and provides blocks of clean air in the middle of industrial
pollution? Someone paid for the land, true. But other people gave it
life. So the question is, to whom does that land really belong?
We found that question so compelling, six of us formed a committee and went
to see Mr. Horowitz to ask him to reconsider. Our purpose had to do
specifically with the spate of anti Semitism he said he had suffered from the
Farmers. The farmers denied that any anti-Semetic remarks were made by any of
their people. In fact they felt so bad about it they sent him a basket of
fruits, vegetables and flowers as an apology for a crime they did not commit.
Our committee’s first concern however was that this accusation of
anti-Semitism, which was rumored by Horowitz himself, could have a ripple
affect which would be bad not only for the Jews, but for the city. Any group
can grab onto a hate movement, and use it as an organizing tool for its own
agenda. It may have nothing to do with the original issue which is
invariably forgotten. Nothing works to as an organizing tool like
prejudice. Milosovich used to with the Serbs against the Croats. Hitler used
it against the Jews. The Hutus used it against the Tutsies. You know how that
goes.
We sat down in Mr Horowitz comfortable office and introduced ourselves. Our
all Jewish committee of six was clearly progressive, so Horowitz, also quickly
identified himself as a conservative. He spoke bitterly about the farmers,
although when pressed he could not come up with who called him an anti-Semitic
name. When we asked if he had accepted the farmers’ apology he nodded, I
thought reluctantly, but then added he wouldn’t sell them the land if they gave
him a hundred million dollars. His bitterness was palpable. And we couldn’t
really figure out the root cause of it until he suddenly burst out: These
immigrants, they come over here, they think they own the place…And behold,
immigrant bashing filled the room and we spent an uneasy hour being regaled
with it.
In the end of our attempt to stem the tide of violence and anger in our
community, we realized that our meeting with Mr. Horowitz had fallen on deaf
ears. He proudly announced that he was a hero to his conservative friends. When
we asked if he was concerned about the ripple effect of his accusations
of anti-Semitism, he said No. As long as he was true to himself, that’s
what mattered. Then he referred us to Councilwoman Jan Perry, and we suddenly
got the impression that she’s the one who’s really running this show. Horowitz
is the man in the middle. ‘Show me the money’ is all he really needed to say
and we all could have saved a lot of time.
Our little committee did contact Councilwoman Jan Perry, who agreed to have
a meeting with us. Her agenda promises to be a lot more interesting. In
the meantime, it felt good, as a person with no particular portfolio to help
avoid violence in our city. It felt good not to leave it to the other guy. It
felt good to decide to be on the side of the farmers, not just for their
talent, courage and perseverance, but for their lack of violence. Yesterday was
their first day in court. If they prevail the land will revert to the city and
they’ll have a chance to restore their gardens. Maybe. Wherever it goes I’ve
decided to go with it. I like people who hang tough for a good
cause. I like to be one of those people. They may have leveled the land,
but the farmers are still standing. Tall.
It’s not over till it’s over. I’m Lila Garrett

500 Women Take Over TV Station in Bloodless Coup Against State/Corporate Media

author: The women of Oaxaca Rock!
This is just too good a story not to share. Obviously, the corporate media
here has not been interested in telling this tale, as it could give people
...ideas. This story, from Narco News, shares the inspiring story of women who
took matters into their own hands when their government oppressed them and the
corporate media refused to tell the tale. Banging on pots and pans, they took
over Channel 9, ousted the staff, occupied the station themselves, and began
broadcasting, for the first time, the TRUTH.
Oaxaca's State TV Station Under Popular Control

Women March to the Zocalo Against Governor and Take Over Channel 9 Studios

By Nancy Davies
Commentary from Oaxaca

August 2, 2006
This report appears on the internet at
http://www.narconews.com/Issue42/article1990.html

OAXACA CITY, August 1, 2006: In the style of the marcha de las caserolas
(cooking-pot march) made famous in Argentina, the women of Oaxaca took to the
streets with their pots, frying pans and spoons to beat out the call Ruiz
fuera!: Governor Ruiz out!

Women March through the Oaxaca zocalo August 1
Photo: D.R. 2006 Nancy Davies
On Tuesday morning about 2,000 women gathered at the Plaza of the Seven Regions
and marched toward the zocalo, a distance of five miles. Along the route they
were greeted by cheering onlookers who handed them water and waved signs in
support of the social movement that has set as its first and foremost goal the
removal from office of Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz (URO). The women tapped out
the rhythm of ya cayó (he's already fallen) and used pan covers as cymbals.
Many carried wooden spoons and drummed on their frying pans.
When they gathered in the zocalo the drumming sound was like a tropical
downpour - rain on a tin roof. Then the bells of the ex-government building,
made over as a museum by URO, began to ring. The movement has attached ropes
from the bell towers to the pavilion in the center of the zocalo, and over the
sound of the tapping of thousands of spoons on pots, the bells peeled out.

No tropical rain: the sun at mid-day glared, and many women, some of whom
carried children, also carried sun-umbrellas. The females present ranged in age
from babes in arms to tough old grannies. As many women wore the traditional
aprons -a trademark of street and market vendors in Oaxaca- as wore jeans.
Before the march dispersed at 12:30, somebody announced from the pavilion,
Women are going to Channel 9. The location of the state television facilities
is a bus-ride outside the downtown area, across from the Alvaro Carillo
Theater.

Women have played a strong part from the beginning of the movement, as they
comprise half of the teachers' union and/or are mothers of students affected.
As parents they have expressed rage against lack of decent schools and
classrooms, and most recently against paying enrollment fees for public
schools. Free education is guaranteed by the Mexican Constitution. Fees to
register, as well as purchase of uniforms and books, appear to have fronted yet
another method of state theft.

About 350 women marched into the state TV Channel 9 facilities at approximately
1:30 p.m. Nobody stopped them. Perhaps a thousand women and children more stood
on watch outside the building. At 3:30 the channel went off the air. Within an
hour, the women telephoned Radio Universidad, the radio station at the Benito
Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca (UABJO), to say they had two radio
stations working from the site, one AM and one FM, but no television. They
reported that there had been no opposition, no struggle, and nobody was hurt.
They asked the listeners for back-up - guards, food, water, and people who know
how to operate television cameras.
By early evening some of the occupying force of women had returned to speak in
person on Radio Universidad, while most remained at the television station.

We are not afraid, the spokeswoman said. Whatever happens, happens. We are
fed up with this situation. We are fighting for our children. We women cannot
stay home.

On the previous day, Monday July 31, the government sponsored a second
Guelaguetza tourist event organized by the state's Department of Culture in
the newly paved Llano Park, another renovated piece of cultural patrimony.
Although Radio Universidad - yesterday the only source of public communication
for the social movement - had suggested that people let it go, stay away and
not provoke trouble, the students (I'm guessing by the youthful voices) rushed
right down to Llano where the event was starting, screaming ya cayó! However,
they stationed themselves at the opposite side of the park from the event.

According reporting in the local newspaper Las Noticias, a near-confrontation
was provoked when one youth climbed the park's

Hi everyone,

I'm forwarding a an article on the situation in Mexico, which is edging toward
the precipice... of what, remains to be seen, but the pressure is building. I
was in Mexico City for a couple of weeks in August, and experienced the amazing
energy involved in the huge sit-in going on in the heart of the city in
opposition to the electoral fraud being perpetrated there.

I have to add that this feeling of outrage over the fraud is not limited to
Mexico City. Just yesterday I read a e-mail about how Calderon, the supposed
President-Elect, was driven off the stage at a speaking event in Morelia,
Michoacan by a hail of eggs and tomatoes!

The situation in Oaxaca is even more intense, yet as in the case of Chiapas,
home of the Zapatista uprising, the Mexican government keeps saying Nothing is
going on. My own impression is that the ruling class is just trying to ride
out the storm, and keep their hold on power and privilege. They assume, no
doubt, that as long as they have the support of the U.S. government, they don't
need the support of their own citizens. It must be an adaptation the political
system here in the U.S., where as long as politicians have the support of big
money, they don't need the support of the people.

This message is from the People's Global Action list serve, and has a few
grammatical errors, but considering that it was written by a German, I'd say it
was pretty darn good! (Thanks, Momo!)

Hi all,
Olivier mentioned the case of Mexico and Oaxaca and
the situation here. I told him i am right here in
Oaxaca and he asked me to write something about it.
waht is happening here is realling amazing. I was
about to fly back to Europe yesterday, but i changed
my flight since i just cannot leave in this situation.
Anyway, this is a summary of wha is happening here,
how the movement evolved and where it might go...

saludos,
Momo

I´m now since three weeks in Oaxaca, the beautiful
capital of the state Oaxaca in the south of Mexico,
which is in these days full of the sounds and smells
of rebellion. What began as a strike of teachers that
were struggling for better the payments and
improvements for the kids like school breakfast,
turned into a popular rebellion after the government
tried to evict a Planton (a camp of the teachers on
the Zocalo, the central place of the city) violently
on the 14th of June. Although for us who survived
Genova it might seem not even that hard, but for the
people, who had already suffered a lot under the
governor Ulises Ruiz in the almost two years since his
election (which many suspect was by fraud), that was
simply too much, the point that made them say “Ya
basta!”. Instead of killing the movement by
repression, as intended by Ulises, he reached a huge
wave of solidarity of all parts of society, from
indigenous communities to parts of the church, and a
united call for his destitution. In this process the
APO, or today APPO (Popular Assembly of the Peoples of
Oaxaca) was born, which is an organization, a movement
and an assembly at the same time, that unites now more
than 300 organizations and local assemblies of
villages and quarters. There the delegates of the
member organizations meet several times a week to
discuss from practical problems to actions and
strategies to the future of the city and the movement.

Their first aim is the destitution of Ulises, but most
people know that the problems are far beyond Ulises
and that profound changes are needed. And that process
is already on the way: There are discussions going on
about a new constitutional process and a new for of
government. People and sectors of society that never
had to do with each other are meeting to discuss in
the assembly or in one of the many Plantones that are
all over the city, or at night on the barricades
(there are 1500 of them in the city of Oaxaca!!!). At
night you see housewives and old men and women
standing on the burning barricades with a stick in
their hand, ready to defend themselves and the
movement. And that is very necessary: just in the last
weeks two people got shot down and died, on in a march
and one on a barricade, when the police tried to evict
a radio station occupied by the movement. But normally
there is no police at all on the streets, since one
part of them is anyway on the side of the movement and
the other part is simply afraid because of the
strength of the movement. And they are strong: On the
marches of the APPO up to 800.000 people joined, which
is almost one forth of the population of the whole
state of Oaxaca, (and 140% of the number of

Statement: The New York City Independent Media Center Responds to the
  Death of Brad Will

  October 29, 2006
  New York City

Brad Will was killed on October 27, 2006, in Oaxaca, Mexico, while
working as a journalist for the global Indymedia network. He was shot in
the torso while documenting an armed, paramilitary assault on the
Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca, a fusion of striking local
teachers and other community organizations demanding democracy in
  Mexico.

The members of the New York City Independent Media Center mourn the loss
of this inspiring colleague and friend. We want to thank everyone who
has sent condolences to our office and posted remembrances to
www.nyc.indymedia.org. We share our grief with the people of our city
and beyond who lived, worked, and struggled with Brad over the course of
his dynamic but short life. We can only imagine the pain of the people
of Oaxaca who have lost seven of their neighbors to this fight,
including Emilio Alonso Fabian, a teacher, and who now face an invasion
  by federal troops.

All we want in compensation for his death is the only thing Brad ever
wanted to see in this world: justice.

  * We, along with all of Brad's friends, reject the use of further
  state-sponsored violence in Oaxaca.

  * The New York City Independent Media Center supports the demand of
Reporters Without Borders for a full and complete investigation by
Mexican authorities into Oaxaca State Governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz's
continued use of plain-clothed municipal police as a political
paramilitary force. The arrest of his assailants is not enough.

  * The NYC IMC also supports the call of Zapatista Subcomandante
Insurgente Marcos to compañeros and compañeras in other countries to
unite and to demand justice for this dead compañero. Marcos issued this
call especially to all of the alternative media, and free media here in
Mexico and in all the world.

Indymedia was born from the Zapatista vision of a global network of
alternative communication against neoliberalism and for humanity. To
believe in Indymedia is to believe that journalism is either in the
service of justice or it is a cause of injustice. We speak and listen,
resist and struggle. In that spirit, Brad Will was both a journalist and
  a human rights activist.

He was a part of this movement of independent journalists who go where
the corporate media do not or stay long after they are gone. Perhaps
Brad's death would have been prevented if Mexican, international, and US
media corporations had told the story of the Oaxacan people. Then those
of us who live in comfort would not only be learning now about this 5
month old strike, or about this 500 year old struggle.

And then Brad might not have felt the need to face down those assassins
in Oaxaca holding merely the ineffective shields of his US passport and
prensa extranjera badge. Then Brad would not have joined the
fast-growing list of journalists killed in action, or the much longer
list of those killed in recent years by troops defending entrenched,
  unjust power in Latin America.

Still, those of us who knew Brad know that his work would never have
been completed. From the community gardens of the Lower East Side to the
Movimento Sem Terra encampments of Brazil, he would have continued to
travel to where the people who make this world a beautiful place are
resisting those who would cause it further death and destruction. Now,
in his memory, we will all travel those roads. We are

This video is of the events in Oaxaca on Nov.2 in front of the university of
Oaxaca when the federal police tried to break in and destroy the radio station,
the people's main communication tool to each other, and to the outside world.
The whole town came out to defend and fight back and they won a great victory.
-The voice in the beginning is the voice of radio Oaxaca calling for
citizens to come out and form barricades around the university to protect the
radio station. We cannot allow this important voice to be lost.''

  - Then you see the people responding; creating barricades.

-You will see a man and a woman scolding the federal police, and appealing
to them as fellow Mexicans with families; reminding them that they are no
different than the people in the streets that they are attacking.

  - The doctors making a statement; saying that some of the news media has been
framing the movement  in Oaxaca as being made up of gang members and criminals;
(This framed by shots of the townspeople standing hand in hand to form
barricades)
but, they say, we are doctors; profesionals who are defending our city and
helping the people. Holding up his stethoscope, he says, These are our
weapons. With these weapons we fight and help our people and our compañeros.

  - Then you see a member of the police saying that they have no intention of
attacking the university or of arresting anyone. The lie to this is evident in
the next shot where helicopters are shown dropping tear gas into the
university.

  - Then you see a couragous people; a people fighting together for a just
cause, and in the end, winning. I watch this with tears...and only hope that I
would find the courage to be like these people in the same situation.

On the right of the screen is a list of more videos that you can watch just
by clicking on the links. One of them is the video that came out of Indymedia
reporter Brad Will's camera after he was shot dead in the streets of Oaxaca
last week.

I hope that this little recap helps all my English speaking compañeras and
compañeros to understand the importance of this battle. This is the type of
thing that people in Latin America have been dealing with for hundreds of
years. Our government doesn't want us to know that this is what has been going
on in our name, but now, with modern technology it is no longer hidden from us.

Our tax money is paying for this, and in the cases of the worst brutality and
torture, the perpetrators are trained here in Fort Benning, Georgia at the
School of The Americas. My friend Hector Aristizabal, a torture victim from
Columbia, said that with knowledge comes griefand yes, my tears have
surprised me. But let's let our grief and our compassion work for us to give
us the strength to make change. Let's support our sisters and brothers in their
efforts to create justice in their countries. In doing so we will
create a just world; one in which as Subcomandante Marcos says, Un mundo
donde quepan todos. (A world where we all have a place.)

Please watch this video and pass it on.

  A big abrazo to all,
  Anna

[LAAMN] COMMUNITY GROUPS CONFRONT LAPD AND CHIEF BRATTON ABOUT MAY DAY POLICE RIOT

2007-05-09 Thread Anna Kunkin

So the community came to the meeting at Parker Center and asked …why did this
happen? And who gave the order? ….questions still not answered by the police,
although scapegoats have been chosen by Chief Bratton, “Tweedle Dee and
Tweedle Dum” say some, and demotions have already been announced. But this
isn’t enough says the community, more is needed.

Some of the demands being made are:

  - For Full Accountability of the LAPD and their actions against the
communities.
o A list of all officers present should be made public

  - That all LAPD officers should have full identification on their
person at all times, as mandated by California Penal Code 830-10.

  - For an elected civilian Police Review Board composed of a diverse
group of community members that has the power to hire and fire, and the power
to subpoena and indict police officers who commit crimes.

  - For a Public Apology from LAPD Chief Bratton and from whatever
commanding officers (still not known) who gave the order to attack. (So far the
chief has apologized to the TV reporters, but not to the public.)

  - For an end of all special-forces presence from community or
political demonstrations or actions in the future. Only traffic and parking
personnel should be necessary to facilitate traffic.

- That all charges made against anyone arrested that day should
be dropped
- For full transparency during the investigation process
Additionally, Shouts of “Stop the Raids!, Stop the Deportations!” were heard,
along with quite a few “Power to the People!”.

Others demanded that Chief Bratton’s contract to serve in Los Angeles not be
renewed. There is a strong feeling that he is responsible for setting much of
the attitudes that allowed this to happen as evidenced by the recent round ups
of homeless people on Skid Row.

The presence of the Minutemen have to be mentioned, as their comments of “you
Mexicans and Illegal Aliens need to go back to your own countries” showed a
highly developed and almost hysterical level of impenetrable ignorance. It was
almost laughable watching them praise the LAPD and characterize the May 1st
events as an attack on the police, when it was so clear that wasn’t what
happened. . When the Minuteman founder and leader Jim Gilchrist got up and
admonished Bratton for demoting two high level police officers, even the cops
in attendance looked uncomfortable …as if they understood that they were being
lauded by NAZIS and didn’t really want to be identified with them.

etc., then I had him! Anonymous Counterintelligence Officer, 12/30/02. Meet
the face behind the operation in an engaging one-person show based on the real
life character of a U.S counterintelligence officer. Colombian psychologist
and actor Hector Aristizábal grapples with the persona of
a U.S. counterintelligence officer. Aristizabal takes us on a journey through
the mind of an interrogator who believes that his work is informed by cultural
sensitivity and knowledge. In this theatrical encounter we get to sip tea with
the interrogator and participate in the stories he tells. We become
terrorists, and potential interrogators. This highly provocative play is
inspired by real extensive correspondence between the interrogator himself and
social scientist, Jean Maria Arrigo. The officer this play is based on, was
trained as both an anthropologist and a police explosives expert, and served
as a liaison to counter terrorist police teams in the Middle East. The
officer reflects on scenes of violent Middle Eastern interrogation of supposed
terrorists and on his own experiences with less violent methods. He sizes up
the terrorist threat, the prospects of detainees, the needs of his
subordinates, the failings of his superiors, and the foibles of
meddling human rights activists. A survivor of state-sponsored torture
himself (Colombia, 1982), Hector becomes his nemesis, the torturer, in frank
investigation of Carl Jung's dictum, The healthy man does not torture
others—generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers. The script was
created by Hector Aristizabal and Vivien Sansour from Correspondence between a
U.S. Counterintelligence Liaison Officer Jean Maria Arrigo,2002-2006,
Project on Ethics and Art in Testimony; additional copy archived in the
Intelligence Ethics Collection, Hoover Institution Archives, Stanford

documents some of the horrors committed against the civil society of Oaxaca,

accusations or investigations although everybody knows who is responsible for
these murders.

Mal de Ojo T.V. is a collective of filmmakers and media makers, which has
formed in Oaxaca in response to the conflict. June 14th will be the first
public screening of “True to My Pledge” in Oaxaca City. Out of concern for our
security as filmmakers we are inviting other collectives and interested people
to show this film on the June 14 anniversary in different parts of the world as
a way to protect ourselves and also to let people know what’s going on here in

 Hi Anna,
I got your email from Robby Herbst he thought you might be able to help
us get the word out about our movie ,What Would Jesus Buy. Its an anti
consumerist romp from New York to Disneyland during the Christmas season
2005. We have been working on this movie a long time and though it is
funny and entertaining it makes a serious case against consumerism.
Morgan Spurlock produced it but we are distributing it our selves and
really trying start a grassroots fire.
I especially want to make sure activists know about it, do you have any
good advice for me or are there people you think might be able to help us?

Stop The Shopocalypse !

There is a word of mouth screening this sunday november 11 at Fine Arts
Theatre Beverly Hills
at 2 pm if you or any other culture makers would like to go (rsvp to
) and it opens on November 21st at
Sunset 5. You can find out more about our work at
www.revbilly.com
and the movie at
www.wwjbthemovie.com

I attach a flyer for the movie, if you can spread it around to people
you think might be interested it would be great. This movie is a
powerful tool for change, we just need to get people out to see it.

Thanks in advance for your help.

[LAAMN] Fwd: Re: Fw: Invitation for December 1st event

2007-11-24 Thread Anna Kunkin

-Forwarded Message-
From: Nicole M. Gatto
Sent: Nov 20, 2007 12:14 PM

Subject: Invitation for December 1st event

Dear Friends

Attached is information about an upcoming event that I am helping
organize with a group whose cause I am very much behind. I realize
that its short notice as it is starting to be the season for company
holiday parties, which have a way of taking over available Saturday
nights in December. I also realize that the requested donation of
$100 for the dinner may be a bit much during the holidays. OK, so
what can I tell you that would gently persuade you to seriously
consider attending and or passing the invitation along to friends who
would perhaps themselves be interested?

This event is a benefit for Emergency, a non-political/non-partisan
humanitarian organization whose mission is to provide (free)
healthcare and access to medical facilities to individuals who are
victims of war (a.k.a. the real faces of collateral
damage). Emergency was founded in the early 1990's by an Italian
physician originally to address the devastation caused to individuals
by land mines remaining after conflicts. Today we have medical
facilities and personnel in a number of countries around the
world. The organization is comprised almost entirely of volunteers
and maintains an extremely low overhead (thus the need for fundraising).

The event will be intimate and held at the home of one of our members
who happens to have an amazing art collection. Dinner will be
catered by a chef friend of mine - the food on the planned menu will
be exquisitely delicious. There will be entertainment (a tabla
musician), a silent auction and beautiful handmade Afghan crafts on
display and for sale. Undoubtedly there will be interesting,
stimulating conversation. I almost forgot to mention that your
contribution is tax-deductible.

More details can be found below and in the attached flyer...
I would be happy to speak with you more about the group or answer any
additional questions about the event.

Thank you, in advance, for your consideration, and by all means,
please pass the word along to anyone you think might be interested.

With extreme respect and gratitude,

Nicole

“There are few peace activists who have the dedication of Brian Willson, as
there are few activists who inspire me more. I hope Brian’s story can
inspire a new generation of activists to fight with all they have for peace,

“In a world filled with violence, oppression, the madness of war, and the
destruction of the environment, many are searching for hope—and those
individuals who give us hope. “This is where Brian Willson comes in. Like
many of us, he bought into the lies of war and violence. But something
happened along his journey, and Viet Nam was only the beginning. He
discovered the truth and he followed it, no matter the cost. I encourage you
to read this book about a great peacemaker and a great lover of mother
earth. You will be filled with hope.”  —  Roy Bourgeois (Maryknoll Catholic

[LAAMN] LA INdyMedia Film Night

2012-09-10 Thread Anna Kunkin

PASS IT ON.

In the spirit of furthering understanding and communication
within and between our many communities LA Indymedia brings Film-Night back
with the film “Precious Knowledge”.

“Precious Knowledge” is an important documentary that
exposes the blatant racism that the State Superintendent of Education in
Arizona recently displayed in cutting out the successful ethnic-studies
program at Tucson High School.

The film follows the lives of four students and several
teachers as they fight to save their classes and the program that became an
educational lifeline for them.

The disenfranchised high school seniors became academic
warriors and community leaders in the face of losing a successful program that
has become a national model of success. In a climate where the national average
of Mexican-American drop-outs is 45 percent, 100 percent of the students
enrolled in the Tucson High ethnic studies classes
graduated from high school and 85 percent of them went on to
college.
The filmmakers spent an entire year in the classroom filming this innovative
social-justice curriculum, documenting the transformative impact on students
who become engaged, informed, and active in their communities.
This story is important to all of us; as Americans and as Angelinos. In our
city Ron Gochez, a high school social studies teacher and important activist,
currently running for city council, was recently fired for teaching
ethnic-studies courses in his South LA
classroom.
Come join LA Indymedia, in conjunction with the Gateway-Portal in West LA for
our screening of the film with a discussion
afterward.

LA INDYMEDIA FILM NIGHT

joining us for a discussion after the screening.

When: Sunday, October 14, @ 7pm
Where: The Gateway Portal,  2511 S. Barrington Ave., Suite #100, West LA, CA.
90064

In the spirit of furthering understanding and communication
within and between our many communities LA Indymedia brings Film-Night back
with the film “Precious Knowledge”.

“Precious Knowledge” is an important documentary that
exposes the blatant racism that the State Superintendent of Education in
Arizona recently displayed in cutting out the successful ethnic-studies
program at Tucson High School.

The film follows the lives of four students and several
teachers as they fight to save their classes and the program that became an
educational lifeline for them.

warriors and community leaders in the face of losing a successful program that
