I started lace in the early 90s with the dreaded Dryad kit and plastic bobbins. Tried to teach myself, and asked husband to make me some decent bobbins, which he did. I did not do a lot of lace as I was still teaching foreign languages and English, but when they closed our department down, I really got into it and a local friend pointed me to Arachne. Since then there is no stopping me, even though I still don't have a lot of time as I still teach privately and do translation/interpreting work. Through eBay I found a local woman I'd known for years, but did not know that she had started making bobbin lace. She told me of a lace group in Hull, and about Arachne. I don't post often, but read all the messages and advice, and found "soul mates" all over. I wish Arachne and all its members a long live and keep the chat and tips coming. RE: [lace] bobbin
If the wood has not been seasoned sufficiently, -and this can take a while for large chunks of wood-, or has a knot or similar in it, then it will probably bend. Agnes Boddington - windy and wet East Yorkshire Hi Alex While I cannot provide any insight into the bobbin, I was intrigued to notice that it appears to have a slight bend in it. I have quite a few bobbins (both bone and wood) that exhibit the same phenomenon. I have been unable to explain why this is. Does anyone have any suggestions? RE: [lace] Scissors for lace
I use Gingher Thread Clippers, made in Germany - that is the important bit. They are light-weight, small, but very effective. They are sharp, and have very pointy ends, so you can cut close. Just checked on the internet, only to find that they are now made in China. Here goes my praise, though I am lucky enough to have a few brand new ones tucked away, that were made in Germany. RE: [lace] Re: Colour Coding
Good morning all from dreary UK. To keep track of where I am in an intricate pattern, I use the method that Christine Springett taught me and many others: I put a copy of the pattern/pricking in an A4 plastic folder (if very large, I cut the diagram into one or more A4 pages with slight overlap. Then use solidly coloured sticky plastic (something like book covering stuff), cut 3-4cm arrows with "sharp" point, and use these to mark each point of wherever I am in the piece of lace. They are easy to move and can be used again and again. When you use pins for a working diagram, it can be tricky when you put your lace in progress and working diagram away or transport to class, as all these pins are sticking out. You do not have that problem with the sticky arrows. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Lacemaking in Ripon, Yorkshire, England
I do have a copy of the book: the ISBN is 978-0-9547077-2-9. It was published in 2010 by Ripon Local Studies Research Centre. It has some historical info (with photos) about people who were either lace makers or traders. This part covers the 16th to 19th Century with prominent lace makers and a lace merchant. Then follow a number of patterns for lace edgings, very much like Bucks Point and Beds, complete with prickings. To be honest I have not done anything with the book, it lives with my other lace books. It has 91 pages. RE: [lace] Lace stands
Any chance of posting a picture of the stand on Pinterest or elsewhere? Agnes Boddington Interesting that nowhere do I see the simplest form of lacemaking stand. It is a simple adjustable column (raises or lowers to any convenient height), is steadied by a flat area for one's feet, and supports one edge of the flat pillow while the opposite edge rests on one's lap. With the column compressed, it measures about 18" high and depending on the size of the foot plate about 8" wide. Jeannet van Ord gave me one years ago, and it fits in my suitcase. I have used it for travel and classes, and around the house when space is limited. Several friends have copied it, thanks to their woodworking husbands, and seem to find it as useful as I do. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] lacing alone or in group
When doing a simple lace project, I don't mind company and chat . So on Th evenings when 3 of us gather at my home, I do the easy bits. One makes Honiton lace, I am doing either Beds or Bucks point, and no. 3 does tatting. I keep my intricate work for me-time, when I can just disappear in my craft room with no disturbances - apart from Mike shouting that coffee is ready, or Tilly (the dog) banging on the door with a ball as she wants to play. Later this month I am going on a Lace Guild course, and want to try my hand at Floral Bucks, and have a fan pattern. I will take some smaller patterns with me, in case the fan is too much of a challenge. So, next thought: I could put bay leaves in the centre of the wool, It works in flour, rice, and other dry foodstuffs etc. to keep vermin at bay. Trial only will tell me if I am right or not. I also keep all thread ends, and have used those to make pin cushions. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Of course, the lanolin in uncleaned wool will be kind to your pins, but you all must remember that moths like it! I have a rather new home and moths have not invaded it. But, if you have moths, you know it, and will wish to avoid feeding them. Like Antje, I have saved clean thread and yarn bits from canvas work (in an air-tight container) to use in stuffing pin cushions, though it has been years since I've made one. No metallics. Embroiderers call these scraps "orts", which is usually what you call crumbs from a meal. These, however, are "crumbs left over from projects made with thread. Hello Barbara Is this wool straight off the sheep, or do you need to clean it in any way first? I also wonder whether cleaning the wool will remove much of the natural oils in it. Quite intrigued by this. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Wishing all Arachnids a good, healthy and happy 2017. Dear All, Happy new year! I like to make pincushions stuffed with sheep wool, quite firmly. The lanolin in the wool protects pins. My favourites are small rectangular embroidered linen. To Cindy and all Yes, I too am more of a lurker, but love all your messages. We had our first proper Spring day this week, so I am out and about in the garden and greenhouse: potting, seeding, clearing weeds etc. whilst husband is decorating from top to bottom. Why cannot he do one room at the time? 4 months old puppy Border Collie Tilly is "helping" both of us. Not much time for lace, though tonight I will: Th eve is my lace fix, and two friends come to my house and we chat and make lace. Still working on Christine Springett's Wisteria pattern, but have just turned the last corner. Also have a Torchon pattern for a whirly thingy on another pillow which I take to local group when we meet once a month. FW: [lace] email problems/Celtic demo
I think I get all the messages, so hopefully it also gets back to you and to the list. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK -Original Message- From: owner-l...@arachne.com [mailto:owner-l...@arachne.com] On Behalf Of lace Sent: 14 March 2016 21:05 To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] email problems/Celtic demo Perhaps the first person who has an account that can read this email and also share it to the list will do so. I would be most grateful. Unfortunately this email problem has been quite the deterrent to me posting because some people get my post and then respond and others get upset that they didn't...I am on several facebook page lists as Jane mentions. In fact, I am the editor of the International Organization of Lace's facebook page. (IOLI members, please send me news of your group with pictures!) One thought is that the medium is the message, and the facebook pages with their lavish picture possibilities become very visual, as in "look what I am making", whereas, Arachne where it is considerably harder to share pictures has been the discussion site of the philosophers of the lace world, tackling the important intellectual issues that confront us. For instance, I was dying to respond to the posts about the Celtic demonstration. I, too, favor making a Celtic design. In addition, I think that if someone were to ask too many questions, one could divert into a discussion of linen production in the Celtic areas that would suffice until the person lost interest and walked away. And yet, later, I know that someone will be at a cocktail party and hear another guest expounding on how important bobbin lace making is in the Celtic culture because they have absorbed that lesson from the Celtic festival. Hibernian societies will be puzzled when they are contacted with questions about bobbin lace making and it will be our fault. So, Clay's point that people demonstrating lace at Civil War battle re-enactments does not serve the interests of education is well taken. It is a matter of pride with me that I can think of some kind of relationship to almost any theme of a public gathering that would justify a demonstration since we are so eager to demonstrate. But, I suppose a more realistic scenario would be to show Civil War women at home making lace to while away the hours until their husbands returned, or didn't. I think it is quite likely that there were people doing this at home, as a pass time, although, not at the battlefield as Clay points out. But, the activities of women are often in the home and as a result, do not make such good outdoor festival subject matter. Also, how are the women supposed to enjoy battlefield recreations? People in Gettysburg have them yearly, and I am sure many couples would like to go together. But roles for women are very limited. There were some women who joined the army under the pretext of being men back in the day before routine physical examination was part of the intake process. Apart from that, Laundress and Prostitute come to mind. But, they were probably rather far from the actual battle themselves, and their activities would probably only reach full swing after the battle were over. One question is whether such battlefield recreations, or Celtic fairs, are primarily educational, or just a good excuse to get the kids out of the house. I am inclined to think that the organizers of such events are quite eager to have some form of display/entertainment that doesn't involve selling something. Many people do not don sun screen and costume to assemble in a field unless there is a specific economic incentive. We lacers are a happy exception to that rule. Another interesting question is how educationally accurate any of these events are, since members of the public do not flock to scholarly slide shows, but prefer a little more entertainment with their scholarship. In fact, even museums are under pressure to provide a lot of entertainment with their exhibits. Not long ago I went to a Genghis Kahn exhibit that was so weapons oriented that at least half the attendees were teen age boys, a group not usually well represented among museum goers. One response to the moral quandary of lace demonstration at a Celtic festival would be to make Irish crochet, if one had that additional skill set. RE: [lace-chat] Health news
Pam, that is great news! Having lived through and survived lung-TB as a child, I can imagine how relieved you must be. I hope your health will go from strength to strength, and you'll find the spark to make lace (or anything else crafty) again. Agnes Boddington UK I don't that many of you remember me, but I have news so big I just have to tell everyone. After 5 years of treatment, including spending 11 weeks last year in the hospital (2 weeks on a respirator, they didn't think I was going to live) I have just been declared free of the MAC infection (a non-contagious cousin of tuberculosis, so they tell me) that I have been battling. I have spent most of this year in pulmonary rehab and physical therapy, and have gotten strong enough to live on my own, without any help. For the first time in years, I have absolutely no doctors appointments scheduled...I don't know what I'll do with all my time. Maybe I'll try making lace again! :) Pam Dotson To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace-chat y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Computer tech help if possible, please
Hello Patricia Have you tried system restore? When you swtich the computer on, you get a screen with shortcuts etc. There should be a search bar (mine is bottom left). In it type system restore, and a list of programmes comes up incl. system restore or some similar name. Click on it and on the screen you'll get open system restore. Next screen says something like: Restore system files and settings. There should be a list of several restore points. Choose one and click on next, and it will say Confirm your restore point. Cliock Finish and the computer should go back to an earlier point in time. This may solve the problem. Agnes Boddingon Elloughton UK Subject: [lace] Computer tech help if possible, please I have phoned my local computer shop but the person there is not familiar with Mozilla Firefox. Somehow my computer has gone into full screen and I lose all the directional arrows, bookmarks etc. The only way to move from one site to another is by switching off and then on again. My question is does anyone know of a key or combination of keys which will restore the status quo? I waa told to try F10 but that doesn't work and I had already tried Escape before phoning. I was introduced to Escher's (a compatriot of mine) art work at a young age and even met him once at a gallery and have been fascinated by his works ever since. RE: [lace] bobbins
I believe number 4 is indeed a Springett bobbin, tail and head are very typical of David's bobbins. This is what Wikipedia says about Horn: A horn is a pointed projection of skin on the head of various animals consisting of a covering of keratin and other proteins surrounding a core of live bone. It is flexible to some extent, and may therefore distort over time. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Hello All! My bobbin pics are posted. Can anyone share additional info? The first is the Arachne bobbin with spider bead spangle. Next is Stephen Pierce (Pearce?). Next is The Lace Hall Nottingham with a terrific painted cat spangles. The last looks like Tonder gimp fingers may be Springett? I also posted a pic of some horn bobbins for Brian. They are not old but quite pretty. I've not used them much because they become semi-flexible when handled frequently. Not sure I understand why--perhaps they should have been treated/coated with varnish?? Any thoughts? Many thanks. [lace] Brok 100/3
Hi all, My apologies: I posted 2 days ago that I found a source for Brok white 100/3 thread ( Gavand.co.uk). I ordered 6 spools and paid online, but received an email this morning that they do not have any stock left. Still an interesting site, with lots of other needle craft items. RE: [lace] lace style sheet, was lace proof readers
Lace = a collective noun, meaning all lace taken together or used in a general sense. Laces = the plural of lace when talking about many different varieties of lace. e.g. Cheese (in general), Edam Cheese (a particular variety of cheese), but the Dutch cheeses (meaning all the different ones as a group). My bit of wisdom as a Dutch person, and an English language teacher. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK If I were to refer to the many different kinds of lace in France, I would say the laces of France as in The laces of France are many and exquisite. If I were to buy an auction lot of different pieces of lace, I would say I bought a box of lace. - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. As a professional translator and interpreter, I would like to point out how expensive it is to get a book or article professionally translated. Many books on very specific topics, such as lace and history, will sell a limited number of copies, so translating these would make them prohibitively expensive. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK I usually hate the 'me too' comments BUT on this occasion I agree with both writers. I am passionate about history especially scholarly histories and it pains me that most good ones are not in English. Hello all For many years I only lurked on this list never posted. The reason was there used to be some sort of problem with some people's e-mail (HTML or something?) that meant their posts came out as gobbledegook and I was afraid mine would be like that and people would complain. Then it was announced that something had solved this problem so I was confident enough to post the occasional comment. Now my last post a couple of days ago about crediting designers is showing as almost unreadable owing to odd characters and erratic line changes even though the original message in my sent folder is perfectly OK. Presumably that's why no one has commented on what I said - I don't blame you. Could this be the story by the Grimm Brothers Rapunzel? Or: Rumpelstiltskin? - also by the Grimm brothers. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Hello everyone, Here school started again today. So my children are away and suddenly the house seems so much more quiet. :-) Anyway, I know there is a story about Blonde lace. A Princess was captured in a castle and made lace from her very long Blonde hair to escape. Does anyone has an image, drawing, photo of this story? I have been looking on the internet. But to no avail. Is someone able to direct me to a drawing/pic or image? RE: [lace] Lace story
Hi Rapunzel originates from Italy (old folk tale). As you said she braided her hair and so escaped from the tower. Braiding is kind of lace, isn't it? Somewhere have the total works of the Grimm brothers in Germnan. Used bits of it in my German language teaching in the past. Made a change from teaching grammar. RE: [lace-chat] Handy Hint
Yes, why did not you. But then, neither did I. Good tip! Agnes Boddington- Elloughton UK Dear Friends, I just learned a very useful tip from facebook. When attempting to hammer a nail in, in order to prevent hitting your fingers with the hammer, use a comb to hold the nail!!! How simple is that? And why didn't I think of it before? RE: [lace-chat] English
I cam across a much longer version of this, which I often use with my students: http://aclassen.faculty.arizona.edu/english_language_crazy_inconsistencies Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK, in the middle of a thunder storm. 9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes. This doesn't work in British English as we say 'dived into the bushes' PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'? Ah, but Loch 'Muick' (near Ballater, Aberdeenshire, Scotland) does rhyme with 'quick'. But it isn't properly an English word/name. RE: [lace] Lurker Learning Lace
Hi Andy and welcome to the list (even lurkers are welcome) You'll find us a very helpful bunch of people, even if we live far away like myself. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Hi, I have beena lurker for the past 5 years while I have been learning to make torchon lace. I only today found the photo site and was so very impressed with the lace you all are making. RE: [lace-chat] Caring for needles
I think the problem lies in the fact that a lot of needles, pins and crochet hooks etc. (sewing, knitting etc.) are no longer made in stainless steel, but instead are nickel-steel. These will not only rust, but also flake (the outer steel layer comes off) etc. So be sure to buy proper 18/8 stainless steel- if you can find them. they are generally more expensive, but worth the extra. Agnes Boddington - Elloughton UK Subject: [lace-chat] Caring for needles This is a general question about sewing needles but also tatting needles and keeping them in good condition. I recently went to use some sewing needles that have been stored in a little cloth carry case and they look rusty at the point where they stick through the cloth so not something I would use to sew with, particularly not lace. This particular case has been sitting in a cupboard in our caravan so may have got damp at some time so understandable I suppose.
