[lace] Continental lace bobbins

2021-02-15 Thread Brian Lemin

Dear Arachnids,

With all this confession about being a lazy writer and researcher my
conscience began to burn a little

You all know that the many thousands (probably) of bobbins that I have
on my DB none of them are real.  I my have say 30 real EM bobbins in my
collection! the rest pretty well all came as digital objects from  you
as my supporters. [thanks]

BUT I have a big shoe box full of "real" continental bobbins! Yes, you
good people have sent them to me over the years.  Without being rude, my
studies have not included these wonderful tools and I know very little
about them.

There is no way that i can study them and write about them like i have
the English bobbins.  I think i have examples from about 30 countries?
Whether or not I can  ID them to countries correctly is another matter
(probably not)

The other thing is that if I did something with them i would want only
to concentrate on the "traditional" bobbins of that country. I say this
as I see on Pinterest the most beautiful, intricate and well
turned/carved bobbins, but i can not think they were the traditional
bobbins of that particular country.

Yep, I need help!  Who is the continental bobbin expert who is silly
enough to drop me a note and volunteer? !! smile.

I have in mind a simple web site that people can access, to look at and
be able to compare what they might have in their possession, with a
traditional bobbin from a particular country, and make an educated guess
as to what they have!

MY CV says that I am a frustrating person to work with, I forget, I
promise and it takes me ages to fulfill it.  I cant spell and i
certainly get things wrong!  I am full of crazy ideas that are totally
impractical.  Oh yes, Jean says I am the worst "procrastinator" she has
ever known (well, perhaps married?) Oh I lose things!

Oh yes, I have arranged for my new hip to be a "carved spangle" style!
[yes a continental bobbin]

2020-02-05 Thread Irene & Steve Whitham
Hello lacemakers,

I have a friend that is trying to find out about some bobbins that she owns.
They are spangled bobbins with an "A" stamped at the base.

I can send pictures if you email be privately.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as she can't find anything in the

[lace] How much did "good" lace bobbins cost historical lace makers?

2019-10-07 Thread brido11
I know that is the sort of question many of you would probably think to ask
me, but I have no idea.

People like Compton and Haskins worked hard and long to create what in fact
are artistic masterpieces. (not mention on primitive lathes.)

Then they had to sell them to less than well-paid lacemakers or perhaps get
a bit more for them at a fair.

Springett gave us massed produced bobbin catalogues but I have not found
anywhere that told me how much the good "listed" makers charged for their
bobbins.

They had to make living after all.

I just find it hard to understand that an ordinary lace maker could afford
to buy a say: a three-tier mother and babe made from bone.

I suspect that my reading is different to many who read about lace. Have
any of you bumped into this figure or who can offer a clue?

My most recent question was When did pewter start being used in bobbin
decoration? Answer. I do not know, but I have drafted a longwinded
discussion article about it. Coming soon to WebDocs.

Thanks.

I am thinking of adopting the motto "There is sso much we don't know!"

[lace] Bobbins--new Downton, Devon Trolly & Malmesbury

My bobbins arrived today & I am thrilled! John Aebi kindly made a few pairs of
Downton, Devon & Malmesbury bobbins to go with my lace samples so I posted pics
to Arachne Flickr. The Downton ones are bird's eye maple--spotted, sort of like
the nitric acid/Aqua Fortis effect. Way cool. The others are a variety of woods
(lilac, persimmon, satinwood, citrus & apple) & very smooth. Even my husband
was impressed. High praise! Sincerely, Susan Hottle FL USA

Finally I have to acknowledge the work of the Springetts who really awakened
lace makers interests in the tools which they use. There is little doubt

Re: [lace] "Continental Lace Bobbins" (Lace Bobbins of the world?)

2017-05-26 Thread Karen ZM
Hi Brian,

I do have quite a large collection of bobbins and many old/antique
continentals and Honitons too. Since I am preparing to move house (although
I haven't found a new one yet but have sold this one), I will soon be
packing these and will be happy to let you have any photos you need while I
am in the process, if you want to give me further details.
I will definitely need a few more weeks though as my daughter is getting
married tomorrow week and I am right in the swing of finishing wedding
lace, flowers, favour etc. Once the wedding is over, I am expecting to be
exhausted for a while till I come down off my adrenaline high..it
always happens to me after a big job!

[lace] "Continental Lace Bobbins" (Lace Bobbins of the world?)

2017-05-25 Thread Brian Lemin
Hello again spiders,

At the time of the preparation for writing the Guide and Dictionary, I also
mentioned my digital (and actual) collection of what I am calling my
"Continental Bobbin Collection". As I am poorly educated in this area of
bobbins I asked for a volunteer who may sort or classify them into
countries, then we could put them on the net (hopefully)

In fact I have them already sorted into countries to my level of knowledge,
but I am sure there are E and O.

There was one person who did volunteer, but because of the volume of work
that the above web publications involved, I must clearly have ignored them
(for which I apologise)

If someone is interested in this project, I will happily send them my
current resources on a USB and if a worthwhile collection for sharing;
knowledge/education comes about, then I will happily try and get it up on
the web. Frankly I do not want my name on any such outcome, so it will be
all "yours" !

BTW Arachne members have indeed contributed over the years to this
collection. Many thanks to them. I would like their generosity
acknowledged by a web publication if we can.

With special apologies to the original volunteer.

One possibility would be to upload your text to laceioli. That is a site for
which the International Organization of Lace (the American lace guild) pays
the hosting fee annually. All the content is public, so the whole world can
see it. Only members can post comments, photos, videos, of pdf files. I
think if it were uploaded as a pdf file, only members could open the pdf.
But it would be possible to upload it as a DISCUSSION in the FORUM

which can give you an idea of what is possible.

On the GROUPS page look at TOOLS & EQUIPMENT as a possible place to post it.

[lace] A Collectors Guide to Lace Bobbins. Now ready! and Question for you!!!

2017-05-04 Thread Brian Lemin
Hello all,

Many will be aware that I have compiled (at the editing stage) A Dictionary
of English Antique Lace Bobbins appropriate for web publication.

I have also written "A Collectors Guide to Antique English Lace Bobbins"
which is complete and ready for web publication. I need to say that this
guide could not have been created without my being given total access to the
Diana Smith Collection, (Lace bobbins) and her advice and guidance so
freely and expertly given. I acknowledge her help with deep gratitude as it
is the pre-eminent lace bobbin collection in private hands that I am aware
of.

This document is based on a classification first published by Charles
Freeman in a booklet published by the Borough of Luton Museum and Art
Gallery (1958 and reprinted until 1980) Its title is "Pillow Lace in the
East Midlands" and possibly the book that started my education and building
of knowledge on Lace Bobbins.

I am biased, but it is a great starter for collectors, it is totally and
beautifully illustrated in colour and covers all the genres a beginner or
even an average collector would need. It has excellent examples from the
Diana Smith Collection illustrated in each genre.

I am really looking for a suitable and willing web site to host this
document. "Proudly" (all authors have big egos about their work! Smile) I
would like it on a site of significance to Lace and one which the webmaster
keeps a reasonable eye on the content and presentation of their site.
Perhaps you would be kind enough to share your suggestions on this list
please. I need to say that this document is not suitable for one such lace
archive lace web site that is in preparation.

I am not guaranteeing I will follow your advice, but I will consider all
suggestions as I believe in the process of consultation as two heads are
better than one.

I have considered hosting my own page, but I am erratic, up and down,
procrastinate and not madly interested in running a web site [a bit bipolar
I think] So that is out of the question.

I am not at all interested in commercial print publication, besides I think
it is difficult, expensive and not necessarily "profitable" in the end;
besides which this is my hobby not my job.

Summary.

I am looking for a reputable "lace" based web site that would care for "my"
publication (Please remember the generosity of the Diana Smith Collection)
and be available for all web users and bobbin collectors to consult.

What do you think?

Thanks a lot

Brian

surprise! .smile

[lace] Bobbins and the Plain Indians

2017-01-03 Thread brido11
I was careful to word my challenge to the seller around the issue of
provenance. I am clearly glad that I did as they could have been used by the
Indians.

These bobbins were made around 1830 with one possibly made much later ( I will
need to study it carefully.) How do these dates match up with the mission
activity ... but as yet I have not read the articles linked in your helpful
replies.

I am convinced that the issue of provenance is becoming more important as
bobbin prices rise.

You have been more than helpful

Thank you. I am at my computer and it is bedtime, but good reading for me
tomorrow.

Perhaps it would be a little more accurate to call them 'Christian'

RE: [lace] restoration of antique lace bobbins?

2016-10-03 Thread devonthein
This is an issue with conservators in museums as well. On the one hand the
public really does not want to see things that are so badly damaged that they
cannot visualize what they looked like originally. On the other hand, the
public may be staring at the reconstructed part and thinking it is the
original. One solution that is sometimes embraced is to restore the damaged
area but in a slightly different color or texture so that the restored area is
apparent. Another tenet of conservation is that the repair be one that can be
reversible. They also keep records of what was done to the piece.
I am not sure how you would do this with a bobbin, or whether the monetary
value of the bobbin, or its historical value would justify that kind of
restoration. Maybe they just need to be repaired.

As both a bobbin lacemaker and a tatter, I would say that all items like that
are meant to be used. There's something ethereal about using a 'tool' that
has seen other hands on it over a number of years. I would repair a spangle
that broke, using the original beads where possble.

Some friends know that i always say these things are meant to be used, not

Dear Brian

I am not a collector of antiques so I may not be in line with the value of
antiques, but I do not see the point in keeping something that is broken,
unless it is to prove some point about it's manufacture.

Lace bobbins should be used and loved, just as they were in their heyday. Just
by using an antique bobbin, I think that it brings it back to life and it is
usually very difficult to work with a broken bobbin.

Thanks for all the work you do on the history of our tools.

Hi Folks,

I am always peering at auctions and bobbins sales and sometimes I see a
bobbin or a group of bobbin in a terrible state, dirty, wire missing, beads
missing, but basically the bobbin is ok.

Every occasionally (very occasionally) I see a bobbin that to me has been

old, but who really knows, especially if the spangle looks pretty original.

What do you guys think about restoring bobbins? We do not give a second
thought to restoring furniture, but do we think a bobbin in poor condition
should stay that way? Certainly some types of antiques lose some of their
value because of restoration, and perhaps bobbins should too. I don't know.

What do you think?

I am writing this because I am about to submit an article on "repaired"

Re: [lace] restoration of antique lace bobbins?

2016-10-03 Thread Malvary Cole
Brian asked whether we should restore old bobbins or leave them in poor
state.

I think you should ask why you want the bobbin. Do you collect bobbins as a
collection of old bobbins or is this bobbin one you want to use? If it the
latter, then a certain amount of restoration is necessary.

I hear the comment from people that they won't use an old bobbin in case the
spangle breaks. If the bobbin has been in use for 100 years, the spangle
has probably broken before, so it is likely that it isn't the original.
Surely it is better to use these wonderfully smooth bobbins that have seen
years of lace making already, than to leave them mouldering in a drawer or
box rarely to see the light of day. Many of the spangles on the old bobbins
are quite large, and I have no problem to make it smaller and be able to use
the bobbin. I do keep the old beads separate and use them for old bobbins
if one comes along with no spangle.

I bought a handful of bobbins from e-bay but when they arrived they smelled
of tobacco smoke and were very dirty. My sister, Jacquie, cleaned them and
by the time I saw them they were in a very good condition. Another couple
of bobbins I had, leopards but only holes where the pewter had originally
been, were given to a metal worker friend of one of my students who put in
new spots. Quite expensive, I think, and probably not something that I
would do on a regular basis, but she had them done as a gift for me.

So, I guess the answer to your question, Brian, is why do you have them and
what do you want them for.

the same color in 1996! Does that mean that you have spider bead spangles to
match? Thanks Jane, I don't have initials on my Lace Hall bobbin so that seems
a dead end. Perhaps I should mention that both Arachne Lace Hall bobbins
were acquired from the Elaine Merritt collection that was offered by the Lace
Museum. There were quite a number of lovely pieces but budgetary constraints
intervened! No initials on the Springett style bobbin either. More
mysteries--but I love the little snippet of painted lace. Is this the time to
ask about spangles? One of our goodies at IOLI was a lovely beaded spangle!
--however the wire is very short it looks like it just clips on. I have
other bobbins with similar spangles they are all from the UK. This is not
the way I learned to make spangles so what's up? When I make them, they are
permanent to the bobbins unless cut off with wire snips. Is this a regional
difference or is there a reason to clip them on? Many thanks for the thorough
education that is freely available on Arachne! Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie,

[lace] bobbins

2014-08-13 Thread Jane Partridge
The Arachne bobbin would have been made for the first anniversary in
April 1996, and is one of Margaret Wall's bobbins. (A number of later
ones were turned by Joanne Pruitt). I can't comment on the Stephen
Pearce one as I haven't got any of his to compare; The Lace Hall bobbin,
I'll see if I can track mine down to see if any initials are on it,
unless Amanda Richards is still around and can comment? The Lace Hall
itself closed some years ago, (a pity, because it held a lot of the
history of the Nottingham (machine) lace trade) before the Museum of
Costume closed. I suspect a local maker, but the head reminds me a
little of Jenny and Matthew Hester. (My mother in law, who lives in
Nottingham, bought me two bobbins for my birthday one year). With the
fourth bobbin being the same length as the others, I doubt it is a
Springett - theirs are shorter. The head looks a bit like the Springett
ones, but a number of turners started out using his book on 'how to', so
unless whoever painted it has added their initials as a clue it may be
the one that gets away!

I believe number 4 is indeed a Springett bobbin, tail and head are very typical
of David's bobbins.
This is what Wikipedia says about Horn: A horn is a pointed projection of skin
on the head of various animals consisting of a covering of keratin and other
proteins surrounding a core of live bone.
It is flexible to some extent, and may therefore distort over time.

[lace] bobbins

2014-07-29 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Arachnids

Many years ago I taught an introduction to Valenciennes lace to six students
with a large range of lacemaking experience, from an experienced teacher who
made good quality Flanders lace to a fairly new recruit with only six months
experience. The teacher used her continental bobbins, with which she was used
to working, considering them the correct ones to use for that lace; the
lacemaker with six months experience used her East Midlands bobbins. We were
all stunned at the end of the day to see that the new recruit had a much
better tension than the experienced teacher and we all agreed that it could
only be due to the bobbins they were using.

My personal advice is use the bobbins you are comfortable with, no matter what
the type of lace, and use the correct pillow with them. East Midlands bobbins
should be used with a slightly domed pillow. Laces requiring a lot of sewings
may be easier to work if the bobbins are not spangled, although I tuck the
spangle against the shank and have no problems with sewings.

Happy lacemaking

Dear Alex fellow Arachnids,

Alex you hit the nail on the head. Use the bobbins you are comfortable with
but also; use them with the pillow you feel comfortable with using. Spangled
midlands bobbins can be used on a flat pillow as well as continentals and
continentals can be used on a slightly domed pillow. There are just a couple
of provisos; Honiton bobbins work better on a domed pillow as they are very
lightweight and on travelpillows one works more easily with the slightly
shorter bobbins whether they be spangled midlands travellers or the shorter
continentals.

[lace] New uploads to Arizona (Only read if you have an interest in antique lace bobbins)

2014-05-03 Thread Brian Lemin
Just a note to let you know that my latest flurry of writing and upgrading of
articles to the Arizona site is as follows”:

The Lace Bobbins of East Devon, 22 pages.

This started life as a possible booklet many years ago. It is time I put it
up for general reading. I have to say that though it deals with topics
somewhat superficially, it is probably the only general account of East Devon
bobbins that has been published.

A Quick Analysis of Decorations upon 'Pale' Wood Bobbins, 2 pages.

We have never really come to grips with the names of bobbin makers or bobbin
decorators for East Devon bobbins. It is a topic that I have been struggling
with, and continue to do so *I have an article currently in progress that i
hope will build on what knowledge we have about the topic*. This article is a
bit *something and nothing*, but I have found in my professional life, that if
someone starts with an idea, or writes something, it is a start and can be
built upon. This is one of those *starter* thought bubbles.

The Batavia, re-visted, 5 pages.

This was on lace-fairy for some years, so in order to keep all my stuff in one
place I have put it up here. There is a bit more to say about those bobbins,
but I am a bit stifled at the moment with not getting good communication with
the WA Maritime museum and some copyright problems i have with comparable
bobbins *the Ely finds*. There is not a lot to say about them but the bobbin
story is not quite finished.

Lemin, Brian. and Smith, D. A Most Unusual Lace Bobbin from a Surprising
Source, 18 pages

I am delighted that the “lady behind any successful man” has finally
agreed to have her name as an author on this article. It is a good story, it
wanders in and out of history, amazing craftsmanship and, as always, come to a
slightly less than a firm conclusion. None the less, I think we are on to a
reasonable supposition. Anyway, it is a great bobbin, I wish i owned it!

As I am self proclaimed “righter of wrongs” For some time I have
concentrated on telling readers about the “other” English lace bobbins,
the “Honiton” bobbins or as I insist the “East Devon” bobbins.

Below are two of my earlier articles on the subject of East Devon that Arizona
hosts for me

East Devon Bobbins, 9 pages

Ghosts and Smugglers of East Devon v2, 3 pages.

Future articles will be about:

Honiton Gimp bobbins Many of these are beautiful and very old too *Yes i
used the “Honiton” word! I think it is because I am into the “lace”
thing!*

Stains used on ED bobbins *Don't get excited about this, it will be very
mundane*

Possible ID of decorators and turners of ED bobbins *This will be a
struggle*

Can i end by saying a thankyou to more than a few of you helped me retrieve
Batavia and who have shown interest and practical help in a few of the above
articles.

Just a para of chit chat.

It is Sunday here and Jean and I have been to a quilt show and now i am off,
by myself, to see a film. I like “off beat” films which in Australia we
call “not on general release” It means only a few cinemas choose to show
them. Don't get the wrong idea about the possible topics of such films, (!)
maybe i should call them “Art Films”? eg I saw Hannah Arendt last week.
Most thought provoking.

In Elizabethan times in the UK bones were carved with holes slightly bigger

it (we still have 11.5 hours to go in the UK) as it was tomorrow when
you posted your reply - no 'mere mail', but super-fast by my reckoning
:-)

Anyway, my first thought was the toggles that are used in Japanese
clothing to hold cords secure, as then the holes would be explained.
That though doesn't fit in with the varying numbers of holes, making
this a set.

Possibly they were the hoods like on German bobbins where the hood keeps
the thread clean - but again, if for that use why have more than two
holes?

I'm wondering if, as each would make a different sound and there are
eight notes in an octave, these are actually from a wind chime?

Antje, I had the same thought... and also thought it might be far-fetched.
There don't appear to be any holes or grooves to secure the various pieces.
But if secured on a base, perhaps they were part of an Aeolian Harp? The holes
would make each pipe create a different sound.

Could these be part of a game? - YES! they are more likely Mahjong
counters than they are lace making bobbins. The Chinese didn't make
lace...they did amazing embroidery.

As someone pointed out there is fabric or cord in some of the holes. I'd
think they were beads attached to a bit of clothing or on strings used for
hair decorations before I'd think they were anything else.

Also, if that part of the ID is off they may not even bee Chinese in
origin.

Boy, those are strange! No way they're lacemaking bobbins, but I have no idea
what they could be for. I wonder what that red stuff is poking out of the
holes in the central one. That might be a clue to their use.

Re: [lace] Square lace bobbins

2013-08-20 Thread J D Hammett

Hi Arachnids,

For lace with numerous sewings I like to use Duchesse or Bruges bobbins
depending on the weight of the thread. For very fine thread I will use
Honiton bobbins especially if a large number of bobbins are needed as they
are slim and one can accommodate many bobbins on the pillow.

For continues laces I use either the Midlands (spangled) bobbins or a set of
the above (according to thread weight) whichever is free at the time. I like
to use the continental bobbins as I can flick them rather than having to
lift them as is necessitated by the spangles. The former allows me to work a
little quicker.

Some of you might have some of my Celtic ones that i painted years ago. I like

Re: [lace] Bobbins with Stanhopes

2013-04-26 Thread Jeriames
In my collection of lace and embroidery tools are 2 antique needle cases
containing Stanhopes. One has an early photo of Jerusalem, and was
purchased over 20 years ago at an antiques show. The other was purchased in
February from a Maine antiques dealer. It contains two early views of
Niagara
Falls. The Stanhope part is inserted in a hole bored through the end of the
needle case. Think of the hole you drill in bobbins meant for spangling,
but large enough to hold the tiny magnifying glass inserts in which a
picture can be seen.

These needle cases are carved scrimshaw whalebone items. The external
appearance is like hollow Mother and Babe bone bobbins, but larger in
diameter and 5 inches in length. The open carved windows are similar. There
are
screw-on tops, to keep needles inside. This was a way to secure larger
sewing needles that might damage pin cushions. I suspect the carved openings
were to keep air circulating at a time when needles were made of metals
that easily developed rust.

Are you thinking that new Stanhopes are being made?My needle cases are
probably from the 1800's.

To find Stanhopes, I think there is a way to search on eBay by a specific
name. If you Google, you should be able to find pictures of Stanhopes
inserted in various items and see how they were used. Books on needlework
tools often show photos of these.

[lace] bobbins and music

2011-10-02 Thread Nancy Neff
Hi Arachnids,

I know there have been numerous postings about the
relationship between lace and music, but I just discovered another one, to my
delight!  I have been using my Belgian bobbins and fine Binche bobbins
exclusively for a number of years.  Today, however, I pulled out an old (YEARS
old) large torchon handkerchief edging that I'm intending to finish up (and
free up the pillow :-).  I had been using Bayeux bobbins on this piece and
discovered, after I got back into the rhythm of the piece, that I love the
musical sound of the Bayeux bobbins.  Once I thought about it, I realized that
the sound of the Belgian bobbins isn't quite as clear somehow (shape?), and
the Binche bobbins a little higher pitched--and more 'clicketty' if you know
what I mean.

Has anyone else noticed a difference in tunings among sets
of different kinds of bobbins?  Perhaps this is unique to Continental bobbins,
since I'll bet that the different beads and types of decorations would make
Midlands bobbins sound slightly different from each other.

Some Spanish bobbins are simple cylinders, I think out of olive wood. They
have a wonderfully rich sound. They're the best-sounding wood bobbins I've
found. The sound makes up for the bland appearance. Glass bobbins make a
wonderful tinkling sound, like an old-fashioned wind chime. I don't need a lot
of them on a pillow, just a couple of pairs. [I don't think I'd like constant
tinkling.] For anybody who has been afraid to use glass bobbins, go for it!
They're usually made of Pyrex which is stronger than plain glass. As long as
you don't drop them on tile/concrete, or sit on them, they are really quite
hardy.

[lace] Bobbins on eBay

2011-07-18 Thread J D Hammett

Hi everyone,

A little while ago someone on Arachne asked about Binche bobbins. In sorting
through some of my -extensive- bobbin collection I came accross some packs
of new Binche bobbins. They were bought a while ago for my own use but I use
the slightly heavier Duchesse bobbins. I have posted them as well as a
small pack of Beverse bobbins on eBay.www.ebay.co.uk/270783348603 is
one lot but there are several. They are new and surplus to requirement. As I
was unsure of posting this on Arachne I have asked permission from Avital to
mention this. She kindly allowed this as they are a 'one off'.

Furthermore, I would like to say how much I enjoy following the different
threads discussed on Arachne. Only one problem; sometimes lace making time
is taken up by this so less lace is being made. Also, I want to say a big
THANK YOU to Noelene Lafferty for generously allowing me to use her lovely
LACE orientated poems to raise some money for our local hospice. We have
collected £60 so far (about $90) with more to come.

Lastly a very big THANK YOU to the people who 'run' Arachne and put in a
great deal of work to keep it going; without that it would go the way of a
number of organisations at present and fold due to lack people at the helm.

Happy lace making,

Re: [lace] Bobbins with detachable heads

2011-02-27 Thread The Lace Bee
Right, as promised I rummaged through my boxes and found the bobbin with the
detachable head that I have and then spent another 20 minutes trying to find
the spool of thread that came with it.

I've done some shots of it and uploaded them to my website where I'm logging
all my bobbins.  It's on the unknown makers' page and you will need to scroll
down to the bottom of the page to find it.

http://thelacebee.weebly.com/unknown-makers.html

Because the shots came out rather well I've managed to enlarge the details
more than they are on the spool and did a quick search for the maker.  There
is a very small reference to it in google books and I've put the reference to
this as a link on the page.

I bought the bobbin from De Denne in Kenton, North West London - long gone
from the place it was as the bridge it was on over the railway has even gone
and been moved about 20 metres away.  Does anyone know what happened to the
shop?  There was a wonderful needlecraft shop in Pinner that also went about
the same time - c. 1993.

Quite fascinating, especially to learn that they came with spools!

The style of bobbin is a well known style and I doubt if we pulled the heads
of these bobbins they would come apart! I would suggest the detachable head
style was made for this system.

Thank you indeed for thinking about me.

Working on the Metropolitan Museum collection of bobbins at the moment (104 of
them) . Most interesting. Two of Gertrude Lawrence's illustrations are in
the original. The fabulous spangle (Which I plan to write about) and the
Gorgous Italian glass bobbin.

If they will let me publish I might do a Bobbin Gems from the Met article.
Of the 104 probably say a dozen are of some merit.

I noticed two bugger bobbins amongst them. I will need to tell you about
that type of bobbin another time. It is a real thing but a fun thing! :)

PS those who know me will know that I do not use the above B word in my

Thank you, Brian, for posting that Ebay number for the Abbott bobbins,. As
soon as I saw them I realized I had a similar one, - had a look for it, -
and Yes! I have one!! So now I can add the makers name to it!! It is fairly
slim, and I see I have spangled it, so it came down from Grandma without its
original spangle. - Nevertheless, it works well!! - as do most of my old
bobbins. I have one bone bobbin put away in the safe, as it has a damaged
head which snags threads, but I use all the others.

On another question, - I have the Digest form of Lace, and I have started
getting messages (in this digest - 2 messages) that are total gobbledygook -

Thank you, Brian, for posting that Ebay number for the Abbott bobbins,. As
soon as I saw them I realized I had a similar one, - had a look for it, -
and Yes! I have one!! So now I can add the makers name to it!! It is fairly
slim, and I see I have spangled it, so it came down from Grandma without its
original spangle. - Nevertheless, it works well!! - as do most of my old
bobbins. I have one bone bobbin put away in the safe, as it has a damaged
head which snags threads, but I use all the others.

On another question, - I have the Digest form of Lace, and I have started
getting messages (in this digest - 2 messages) that are total gobbledygook -
from

 helene3...@yahoo.com
Subject: [lace] OMG! did you block me on Yahoo?

Are others getting it like this too? They scroll down quite a way, so take
up a lot of the digest.

Re: [lace] bobbins/weird message

2011-02-12 Thread bev walker
Hi everyone - not about bobbins, but the weird message is spam of some
kind. Delete it.
A shame it has to clutter the digests though :(
