Yes, the e-version is now available online. Unfortunately 5 pages don't
load fully. I've sent an e-mail to the Lace Guild asking if it can be
fixed. I'm assuming this is a problem at their end, not mine, but I'm not
really tech-savvy enough to know. Perhaps someone else who gets the
e-version could take a look at pp. 28-33 and tell me if the bottom of the
pages is missing for them too?

I understand there was a misunderstanding on the despatch date of the 
magazine, but the e-version is now available on the website.


Hope you enjoy it.  Don't have my hard copy yet because of rotating postal 
strikes here in Canada - so glad I get the rough copy to proof read, so I 
can get on with doing the poppy before going to lunch at the British High 
Commission on November 11.


Malvary in Ottawa, where it is a dull, damp, miserable, day - in other words 
typically November.

needle lace. Also announcing Christmas bobbins can be ordered and the plans for 
the Lace Guild Spring School 2019. Interesting news about displays at the 
Hollies.

[lace] Lace (magazine) - and use of magazines for research

When my Post Office burned to the ground on Feb. 21, 2017, the only mail I
knew was lost were the end-of-January Lace magazine from England and a
PieceWork magazine.  Very rumpled sooty waterlogged copies were delivered to
me.  Certain magazines are so important to documentation of the present that
my guest bedroom has 20th - 21st C. publications in bookcases and boxes that
fill the room.   In this case, I went to a bookstore and replaced PieceWork,
and then phoned The Lace Guild in England to order a replacement, plus
calendars for the following year (gifts that are fun to give), and renewed
membership.  All in one call.  So fun to speak with someone in the office.
 
The bonus for lace scholars who visit here is that they sleep in the library,
surrounded by 4,000 + books that tell of the history of needlework in many
nations since the beginning of researched time.  It is a real celebration of
the talents of unknown and known women.  Guests probably have interesting
dreams.  At the least, it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  The librarian
here has read all the books that are in English.  Other languages are
represented and shelved by nation instead of author name.  Research goes much
faster when you have her experience to draw on.  
 
If you are a member of IOLI, there is a photo of my research library on page
33 in the Spring 2018 bulletin you just received.  It is in the article by
Jane Atkinson, of the U.K.  What a surprise!  Jane took pictures, but I did
not know how she would use them.  There are still many IOLI members who do
not know about this library, because they are not subscribed to Arachne, so
thanks for sharing, Jane.

My Lace magazine arrived today. The plastic holder had been cut open and the 
cover address page had written "Opened in Error" on it.  We have had problems 
with mail being delivered to other homes in the area since we moved here 3 
years ago. I think the person who received it decided it looked interesting, 
maybe it was the lace birds on the cover.  Hope they enjoyed looking through 
it, now it is my turn.

reach me. Looks like the office staff are ahead of themselves with sending

Hello Jeri,

I am a member of the Executive Committee of the Lace Guild. If anybody
wants to contact the Exec Committee then holl...@laceguild.org is the best
way to do it as your question might be best answered by one of our paid
staff, somebody on the Museum's Committee or a member of Exec.

I hope that when I have been promoting the Guild it has been helpful to the
person I replied to (for example when somebody was looking for second hand
books).

The reason I asked people to let me know when they got their copy of Lace
was because I didn't think Arachneans wanted to get loads of messages from
people says 'Yes mine arrived on ' and it is easier to just hit [Reply]
to my post than remember to send an email to holl...@laceguild.org.

My email address is the one I use most and therefore the one I look at most
often, I am not in the process of collecting addresses, I have enough
clutter in my life already ;-)

I received the Lacemaking from the Lace Society yesterday, but haven't 
received Lace yet.  Perhaps today?  However, I went on line and filled in 
the forms for the course I want at the Fringe and AGM in early April, and 
thanks to my sister Jacquie, I know they have got to The Lace Guild.


Malvary in Ottawa where we are having a heat wave - forecast high of +6 
today, +9 tomorrow and +13 at the weekend.  The City did a great job 
clearing the snow banks from the street in the early hours of this morning, 
but those big machines sure do make a lot of noise at 4:00 a.m.

  I just got my Lace Magazine in the mail and all I can say WOW...I love that
magazine. In the center is a pattern that my brainwaves in circuit excitement.
It is a huge Milanse Dragon...let me type that again...a HUGE MILANESE
DRAGON...I love it WOW...and then there was the peek for this year's Christmas
bobbin...WOW again...Then there is the pictures of some of the entries for the
Contast competition. WOW again...so much eye candy my eyes are open in big
wonder like Sponge Bobs eyes are all the time...heheChristeine Hough's Flower
Point De Gaze Leaf is very pretty though I don't know how to do Point De
Gaze...but it is great eye candy...Then there is Bedfordshire Mat and oh
my...did I type there is a HUGE MILANESE DRAGON in the center of this month's
magazine. Gee I love My LACE magazineyou want it ...you will have to pry
it from my cold very cold dead hands...LOL...okay back to lurking kinda and
enjoying my magazine.

My Lace Guild magazine arrived today but DH didn't tell me.  I spotted the 
envelope after dinner and settled down for a read.  Imagine my surprise when, 
on 
page 21 there is a photo of my needlelace effort for the Lace Street.  I sent 
the photo I based the design on of my home along with a scan of the lace and 
Susan put a note in that it looks just like the real house.  Then, on page 30 
there is a design based on a Viking Stone from St.  Martin's Church in 
Kirklevington which is the small village in Cleveland, UK that I moved from to 
the US.  Imagine, there were lacemakers nearby and I knew nothing about them.  
I 
moved here in 1982 and didn't start making lace until 1993, Wow - 20 years ago!!
 
Anyway, now that I know how to get my photos on Flickr, I have added one of the 
Lester piece after I cut the bobbins off.  Looks like spaghetti lace.  And, now 
that the house has appeared in the magazine, I added that one for you all to 
see 
in my gallery on Flickr.  Thanks also again to Sue Babbs for the review of 
Lace8 
which I have now got to work on my Macbook in VirtualBox.

[lace] Lace magazine overseas packaging

Dear overseas Lace Guild members!

As you know we had some issues with the mailings for the last membership 
year (now hopefully resolved) and we are pursuing this with the mailing house. 
 I know this is a long shot, but if any of you still have the packaging 
from any of the last year's issues of Lace (April 2012 back to July 2011), 
would it be possible for you to scan it and send it to she...@laceguild.org  If 
you can remember roughly when it arrived, that would be even better.

The only person who I thought to ask to do this is Malvary when her April 
issue arrived, and it clearly shows no airmail markings but now there is some 
dispute as to whether they were all sent the same way (very probably as 
they mostly took a long time to arrive) or whether hers is an anomaly that was 
sent surface mail by mistake.

from both the Lace Guild and the respective postal systems.

HI Sue,

We are at the hands of the postal service  when it comes to our
magazines. I am not sure how it works out side of the US. Here magazines are
considered 3 class mail so it sits in a bin  there is room on the planes.
First class has priority. Once it gets to the destination it can go through
customs and they sit there until customs clears them. I have mailed magazines
to Brazil and it has taken 4 months to get there. I think I could of walked
there faster. To mail a magazine first class for overseas is at least 3 times
the cost of the subscription. I wish I could give you a good suggestion but I
have none.

Say, for the
sake of argument that it was posted on the last day of April,
it has taken two
and a half months to get here!!  I was on the point of
e-mailing the Hollies
to say I had been missed off the list.  It seems to me
that they are using the
cheapest postage rate they can, in an effort to
reduce costs.  It was my
understanding that there is now no sea mail between
NZ and UK, but there must
some really old airplanes on this route if it is
taking so long!!!  The thing
that alerted me to the fact that my mag had not
yet arrived was that I was
aware that subs were due and I usually paid mine
by the end of June. 
Hopefully they won't take us off the mailing list just
yet!!

It has always amazed me that when the Aussie was on his way over to join me he
was able to send a package to me and track it from Adelaide to London but I
couldn't do the same because apparantly, it's not possible to track mail in
Australia (Royal Mail's explanation ... not mine).
 
I tried to argue but have

Tracking a parcel going to a different country means you do the tracking on
that country's postal website. I have had to explain the same thing to
companies in the US when they say they won't ship to Canada, because they
can't track it once it hits the border. Duh, I can, because I track it on
the Canadian side, not the US sideWhen I ship something to the US that
is trackable, I have to track it on the USPS website once it hits the
border. Now that most mail services have websites, makes it a lot easier to
track stuff.

You are very welcome to it as we are about to grow gills. It is raining yet 
again. We had drought conditions and a hosepipe ban (which was only lifted 
on 1st July in my area) earlier this year, so I am sure your turn will come.


However, the rain gives us a good reason to make lace instead of doing the 
garden ;-)   So there is some sunshine despite the rain.

I begged the same thing last week as our fires are getting worse. Pretty soon 
the Rockies will have no trees or vegetation  left!!  The smoke has finally 
abated somewhat, but it has been very difficult for the people who live in the 
areas where the fires are the worst  the firefighters have had a very 
difficult time.  The worst part is that not only is nature causing
The fires both here in Wyoming and Colorado, but people are causing them too!!  
In Fuernsey, Wyoming near the very famous Orwfon Trail site  Signature Rock 
were the pioneers craned their names  dates of passing through, the fire is 
supposed to have been started by humans!!
So, we are also praying England will share their rain - BUT no more lightening!!

for your patience. We suspect that the overseas magazines were sent out 
surface mail by the mailing house (which should not have happened), and 
they may not have been processed as quickly as we would have liked 
before posting - as you quite rightly say they should have been posted 
at the end of April. Certainly items can still be sent from the UK by 
surface mail, which tends to take around six to eight weeks. We 
discussed possible solutions to this problem at our Exec meeting last 
weekend and hopefully you will receive your magazines a lot faster from 
now on - the first issue of the new membership year is due out at the 
end of this month, and we are well aware that there may be some late 
renewals!.


If any other overseas  members of The Lace Guild have not received their 
April magazine (which had the renewal slip sent with it) yet, can they 
contact the Hollies, please? Email holl...@laceguild.org  Membership 
rates are the same as last year, as they were not increased at the AGM.

I was one of the naughty members who forgot to renew!

I saw Sue Dane last Sunday (7th August) and she asked if I'd received the full 
colour magazine?  I hadn't, but the ladies who were demonstrating with her had.
On Monday I phoned The Hollies, they confirmed that my subs were outstanding, a 
cheque went in the post that afternoon and the magazine arrived yesterday.

Hi all
It is quiet on the list and herewith a bit of chat. The 'Lace'
magazine arrived at the PO box last week, but I didn't know except for
a claim card. Of course I knew right away after presenting the claim
card and seeing the piece of mail. It had a bulky bit in it, and the
people who sort thought the better of trying to force it into the
narrow mailbox (I have had to pry mail that was rolled tightly, out of
it, ever since the powers-that-be decided to install smaller boxes to
fit in more addresses...how efficient is that...). Now what was this
bulky bit all about? It was at one end of the envelope, as if
something had been tucked in to the magazine.

All it was, was a crimp in the fold below the staple, that must have
happened when the envelope was stuffed. It was so rigid that the
envelope was thumb-thick at that point, and it 'crackled' - (as thick
paper does) must have been of interest to the people-who-sort! I
popped the bent bit back into place and it was a 'whole magazine'
again.

That and a stat holiday for Remembrance Day caused a bit of a delay in
the mailing to this end. Since then, enjoyable read and visuals ;)

(that's my story and I'm sticking to it)

That sounds like a delay between the mailing house sending out the magazines 
and the Royal Mail in the Poole area.  Mine arrived n Medway last week.

I know that my Kent Family History Society journal which is despatched from 
Kent usually arrives to UK members after the  overseas members gat theirs 
because the overseas ones go airmail (the reason for the higher fees ) but the 
UK ones go by bulk mailing which is really third class.

Hello

   I also got my copy of the Lace Guild magazine on Tuesday.

In it is a memorial for Pat Payne by her daughter Jo.

Pat was the lacemaker who started Norfolk Lacemakers here in Norwich England
in the 1970`s.

In my opinion is was a lovely thing for Jo to have done for her mum. On the
headstone is Pats name and underneath it is lacemaker.

A fitting tribute indeed.

I remember from a week or two ago that you said you were entering a design 
in the Powerhouse Museum competition. I hope that you got it ready in time. 
I also spent several weeks on a design and just got it entered in time. I

It has been a while since I got a digest so I thought I would post an email and 
hope it prods the machine into sending a digest out.

I got my British Lace magazine on Tuesday and had not realised that it was 
delayed until Susan, the editor, posted her message in the last digest.  A nice 
thick issue with lots of lovely coloured pictures.

I had sent a photo of a wooden box in response to a request asking for samples 
of lace done in other mediums which is shown on page 43 of the magazine.  If 
you do not subscribe to Lace, you can see the box on my website about halfway

I designed the lace for the box for the 2008 IOLI convention gift and had them 
made locally in Illinois by a company that many Americans might recognise.  
Heartland Wood from Rockford make many boxes and puzzle boxes that are sold 
around the country.  When shopping in other states I look out for their boxes 
in gift shops.  I remember seeing some at the market in downtown Charleston, 
SC.  The design was laser cut into the wood and it was a popular gift.  I gave 
Heartland permission to allow Lacy Susan to sell the boxes which are described 
as spectacle cases and she also now has smaller boxes that could be used for 
pins or pills.  I am not affiliated with Lacy Susan, just a customer, and if 
they are not on the website you could email her for details if you want one of 
your own.

Hooray, my magazine arrived today.  Thanks to all for letting me know that some 
of you had received your copy on this continent.  Especially nice when I saw I 
had a pattern and an article in this edition.  That was probably why I was 
anxious for it to arrive, so I would have a nice surprise.

My article is really about using Lace RXP to design a hedgehog, but the story 
started about how I did a cardstock cut-out of the hedgehog to pin on beginners 
pillows.  Unfortunately the drawing of the hedgehog is blank, maybe the print 
on the body was so light that it did not pick up in the printing.  Anyway, on 
his body I had drawn an arrow pointing to the right that said Cross and 
another arrow going left that said Twist.  Below that was explanations for 
cloth stitch (xtx), halfstitch (xt) and wholestitch (xtxt).  Maybe they would 
have confused British lacemakers who use linen stitch, which is why I always 
put the x and t explanations.

I will try to get a color photo of the celtic circle pattern on my website as 
it is in black and white in the magazine.  It is different to the celtic circle 
I entered in the IOLI original competition.

I received my Guild of Needlelaces magazine today, so will have a good read
tonight, - just before Lights Out!!!

I have only had a quick flip through, - but an interesting article on Ruskin
Lace, with a beaut bag etc in that lace on the front cover. Other
interesting-looking articles, too, and some pretty pictures of lace...!!!

They show the NL tools that the Guild has for sale, too, and there are some
great Boxed NL tool kits  too. Hmmm!!
The Aussie $ has improved against the £ at the moment, too!!!  :))

I have started the Challenge, as I thought I would have a go this year. I
hope I can get it finished in time!!

chronicled in the Lace Magazine.  The second installment is in the spring
1987 issue.  I have gotten a hold of several copies, yet they are all
missing pages 17-29.  Does anyone have a copy that is complete?  I am
interested in reading what is likely on pages 17-18 or so.

My magazine came this afternoon and I settled down for a read through.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I got to page 45 to see a photo of
Malcolm Chisholm of the Bundaberg Lace Group in Queensland, Australia had made
my teapot pattern.  Not only had he made the lace I designed but he added a
teacup and tea to the picture.  It always surprises me that someone would want
to make my designs.  If anyone knows Malcolm tell him I said, Nice job.

was also interested to see the article about the Diss lacemakers.  I had a
lace penfriend who lived in Wortham, near Diss that I have lost contact with.
If anyone knows Joanie Senior please put us back in touch.  I know sold her
house and moved earlier this year and her emails are bouncing back.  We met
through the Lacemakers Circle magazine about ten years ago and have
corresponded and exchanged birthday/Christmas gifts ever since.  I expect when
her birthday comes at the end of this month she will realise that I don't have
her new address.  How long does the UK Post Office forward mail for?  I guess
I can risk sending a card but I will hold off on a parcel.

Well, UK Lace Magazine arrived in Australia a couple of days ago, and is a 
really good read - again.   this is such an interesting magazine for every 
issue.   I really enjoy them, with some very different, and interesting 
items.


The Article about the Diss Lacemakers was of personal interest, as I had 
close relatives living in the area, who we often visited. They were not 
lacemakers, though, but Auntie taught me (leather) glove making, and she did 
all sorts of needlework most beautifully.

I have been looking at the Lace Magazine International back issues and  I am
considering buying the whole set.  However, that is a lot of money for me
and I was wondering if any of you could give me feeback about the magazine.
Is it helpful?  Do you like the patterns? Do you think it is worth the
price, etc.  I am primarily interested in bobbin lace, but about the only
lace I don't have an interest in is tatting. My mother tats and so I could
give her the issues that deal primarily with tatting.

Jean very kindly mentioned my Rainbow Choker in her earlier message
about this quarter's Lace Magazine. Having just received my copy today,
a gremlin has got in between proof reading and printing - should anyone
decide to work it, please note that the numbers on the diagram have been
moved one pinhole to the right - they should surround the more solid
hexagon with the arrows, 1 being the second pinhole on the third row
down, 4 the pin to its right, 2 the first pinhole on the sixth row, and
3 the pinhole shown in the top of the bead. 

It isn't very often that mistakes slip through the six or so of us proof
readers, this one is probably explained by Deborah's decision to show
the pricking at full size (my original pattern shows it full length, at
50%), causing the text to need retyping and the diagrams moving - the
numbered one has been rotated 90 degrees to the original to fit the new
text layout on the page. In retyping, two lines of text had been missed
out, spotted at proof stage and this was corrected - however, this looks
as if it meant that the diagram had to be moved slightly to the left -
the diagram moved, the numbers stayed put! 

I will say that the choker almost ended up in the bin - it was finished
just before the deadline, and my initial attempt at stiffening it with
PVA glue didn't work very well - fortunately it washed out, and my
second attempt, using a solution of 2 tablespoons of sugar to one pint
of water, worked. Not the best for conservation (!), but it held it
stiff, despite being displayed at Coventry vertically (as the pricking
is on the page) for three months.

I would welcome feedback if anyone does work it. (And I'll be
demonstrating lace at the Doncaster Card Craft and Stamping Show next
Sunday if anyone wants a copy of my pattern - the choker itself is still
doing the rounds of the main shows, though).

The entry in the Myth and Mystery competiton from the lace class I attend is
shown bottom left on page 13 of the supplement. The pieces were made by a
very mixed ability/experience group, including a lady with cerebral palsey
who has limited use of one hand only - she made two pieces of seaweed. My
contributions were the red fish and what looks like a hot air balloon, but
was intended to be a jellyfish. A yellow/brown seahorse can just be seen in
the photo, and there's also a bue fish and a yellow/orange octopus.

I have ordered Lace from the V  A Museum from Amazon in the US.  DH has
offered to buy it for my birthday.  Instead of the(Aussie) $110 for it
through the local bookseller, I can get it posted to me for $62 (approx - on
yesterday's currency exchange).  I think the bookseller here gets their
books from the UK, and our $ is so depressed against the £.  I like to buy
locally, but the difference is just too much, this time.
I have not purchased from Amazon before, but it is often mentioned on the
List, so I am trusting your opinions!!! :)
The Gros Point on the cover is exquisite, and if the rest of the book has
lace like that in it - I just can't wait - though I have to wait 11 -16
days, they reckon!!!
I just hope the Lace magazine comes in the next few days to tide me over
till the book arrives!!! :))

Just received my Lace magazine (awairted with baited breath after all the
talk on this list!!), and I spent last evening reading it. 
I would like to congratulate all the wonderful lacemakers who made those
lace pieces, particularly the Australian ones, of course :-) Such
fantastic imagination as well as lacemaking skills. 
I guess that is what I like most about lacemaking. People with very little
creative skills like me can still make beautiful things by using other
people's patterns, and real artists can go ahead and to their best too.
Keep it up, all of you!!

One can only hope it will come back into fashion soon, like knitting has
this year!! Suddenly, everyone wants to knit, although the same books have
been sitting on the shelves for several years being ignored completely
while everyone queued up for the mosaics books!! I suppose it's good
that people be introduced to various crafts, but I hate that I'll do it
because it's fashionable, and I'll drop it as soon as it isn't attitude!
If they learned crafts seriously at school, it would be less obvious.And
what worries me is that there is no room is many people's houses for
manual entertainment (and I don't mean the bed :-))

I can hardly wait for my issue of Lace to arrive after hearing your 
impression of the cover.
I believe you could very well try Honiton with the equipment you describe 
and get a good feel for it.  Un-spangled Midlands bobbins (especially if one 
of the smaller types) are not that different than Honiton bobbins.  And a 
domed 16 pillow would work also, especially if you choose to enlarge the 
pricking at all.
I really believe it is how one exquisites the the stitches and not the 
equipment that makes the lace.

 that it took the lacer (Barbara Churchward) ten years to complete I
 engaged brain and thought that my initial adrenaline inspired idea to
 embark on this as my first ever piece of Honiton lace was so way out as
 to be ridiculous!
 Does anyone on the list know any more about this mat? Does it look even
 more stunning in reality? How large is it  so on?
 Next to get back to the inspiration and a wish to have a go at Honiton
 I'd like your ideas on the question Do I need the right equipment? I
 know that if I take to this particular style of lace I would, but until
 I know I wouldn't want to buy another pillow and a set of new bobbins.
 I've got le UK Lace Guild's basic technical instruction book for
 Honiton, which has enough details to tell me how.
 Would a 16in domed straw pillow be ok to start with? (or a flat
 polystyrene one)
 Would unspangled light weight midlands bobbins work, or would they be so
 frustrating as to put me off before I got going?

My first foray into honiton was with a free lace piece which really was 
honiton in disguise.  

I really wanted to start it with all the right equipment (sorry that's just 
the obsessive in me!) but as I got the pattern about 3 days before Xmas there 
was no way that I was going to get a pillow and bobbins in time for the holiday 
period.

I started it off with my favourite east midlands bobbins (spangled) on a high 
domed 18 polystrene pillow from SMP but as soon as I had to start sewings I 
realised that these are not that easy with spangles when you have to do them 
all the time so I swapped them onto my bruges bobbins which worked fine.

The celtic dragon that I made is not the greatest thing I've ever done, but 
then I'd only been making lace for about 6 months and the other pieces of lace, 
such my torchon were about the same level.  

Anyway, I was hooked and started buying every book I could find on honiton 
and reading it to get a feel for the lace.

Then being totally obsessive I had to go and buy the equipment, but then 
that's just me.  What I did discover is that I am allergic to straw pillows - I 
found this out when teaching.  Everytime one of my students came along I would 
get a runny nose and sore eyes - I realised that I was allergic to her pillow!  
So it's polystrene or nothing for me.  Also I found that the weight of the 
pillow, when I wanted to sit with the pillow on my lap was better with this type 
of pillow - I don't often make lace at a table, except when at lace days - I 
make lace in bed (but watch out for those dropped pins).

I was given one piece of advice - get a cushion cover - just an ordinary one 
about 16 or 18 square and fill it with polystrene beads like you get in a 
bean bag.  Not too full.  Then put that on your lap and wedge the honiton pillow 
into the cushion cover - it then sits beautifully in the nest!!

As to bobbins, the one thing that I found is that I prefer bobbins of a 
similar size for honiton as they move easy for me but that is just personal 
preference.

Anyway, just my thoughts

I have just received my lace magazine from the UK.
 I have seen the original mat (on the front cover of the magazine) while 
in Dartington this spring. It is wonderful. Caroline Biggins who was the 
tutor for Honiton had Barbara come in and show her master piece. Although 
Honiton is one of my favorite laces I doubt that I would ever tackle such a 
piece, making my small rose this spring was enought right now and I still 
have two Honiton pillows on the go. I do have some new ideas for a nice 
design but it will have to wait. Perhaps you'll see it one day in Lace.

BTW, although the editor of Lace Magazine thought the the leperchauns made 
my fan sticks vanish, I ha ve to disagree with her. Leprechauns aren't that 
popular here, I doubt they are even known. I do blame Harry Potter and his 
wand for the disappearance of the sticks. Ever since he and his friends 
entered my house things started to be misplaced or disappear. bg

Hi everyone.
I too was thrilled to get my Lace magazine this weekend. I saw the front
cover, was inspired and looked eagerly at the inside pages to see if the
design was accompanied by its pattern. Sadly it wasn't, but as I read
that it took the lacer (Barbara Churchward) ten years to complete I
engaged brain and thought that my initial adrenaline inspired idea to
embark on this as my first ever piece of Honiton lace was so way out as
to be ridiculous!
Does anyone on the list know any more about this mat? Does it look even
more stunning in reality? How large is it  so on?
Next to get back to the inspiration and a wish to have a go at Honiton
I'd like your ideas on the question Do I need the right equipment? I

I've got le UK Lace Guild's basic technical instruction book for
Honiton, which has enough details to tell me how.

I haven't seen the Lace Guild magazine yet, but as to your other 
questions:

I'd like your ideas on the question Do I need the right equipment? I
know that if I take to this particular style of lace I would, but until
I know I wouldn't want to buy another pillow and a set of new bobbins.
Traditional Honiton uses very fine threads, and involves many sewings. 
You therefore need very lightweight bobbins that are smooth so they 
don't snag  break the threads when you do the sewings. They do not 
have to be traditional Honiton bobbins. I have made fine Honiton 
successfully with Binche bobbins and some very lightweight Swiss 
bobbins I happen to have, as well as unspangled Midlands bobbins, 
though if they're unfinished you'll have to be careful not to snag them.

As for pillows: I learned on a straw-filled pillow, and they're nice if 
you can easily get one cheap. I still have my first, all-too-ambitious 
Honiton project sitting on that straw-filled pillow (it's been 23 
years, now), so I use my standard cookie pillows for my newer (and less 
ambitious) projects.

Because Honiton uses such fine threads, it uses techniques that can be 
unsightly with thicker threads. For example, you may be directed to 
finish off 6 pairs of threads by bunching them together, tying threads 
around the bundle several times, and cutting off. That's pretty well 
invisible if you're using 170/2 thread - if you're using Pearl Cotton 
#8 it makes a really big bump! Probably you'd use some thread in 
between these two extremes, but I'd say that you may well do better to 
use a 100/2 or 80/2 for your first attempts, so you get something nice 
without having much of a problem with your thread breaking.

 Dear Viv --  Honiton isn't so terrifying as your e-letter might suggest! The
 16 domed pillow would be fine; so would the polystyrene cookie. You could
 certainly use the unspangled midlands bobbins; you could equally well use
 delicate and pretty little wooden Binche bobbins, if that's what you had.
 However, I would not  ‹‹  really, not!  ‹‹  do the enlarged pricking and the
 thicker thread. I think you would lose the sense of Honiton, the fine light
 hand, the delicate turns. (That's only my opinion) The most thing I would
 suggest is that you get a copy of Susanne Thompson's first book, Introduction
 to Honiton Lace. Sue will take you by the hand very gently, lead you past
 pillow and bobbin issues, and before you know it, you will be making Honiton
 lace! When you realize that that's, in fact, what you are doing, you will be
 so thrilled that you will rush right out and get Perryman and Voysey's New
 Designs in Honiton Lace. That book is pure heaven.
 
 I have survived beginnerhood in Honiton: my first teacher was Elsie Luxton,
 then Cynthia Voysey for years; and then (two or three years ago) a workshop
 with Pat Perryman. So I say, Don't hesitate!  Good luck!  Aurelia Loveman

Hi,

My Lace arrived in the post yesterday morning.

I spent some time in the afternoon reading it when I was waiting for DH to
come home and take me to the hospital !!

 I came home in my lunch hour and went to go up in the loft the ladders fell
on me.
Apart from an egg sized bump and cut on my forehead, scratches on my face, a
bruised arm and bent glasses I'm fine !!

I found a link to it while doing some research on Jesurum lace on the web
and was considering ordering some back issues. There is a special offer for
back issues at the moment.

One 1996 issue has an article on Jesurum lace in France and Italy which is
exactly what I'm looking for. I'm researching a set of Jesurum coloured
bobbin lace which still has the label attached identifying it as Jesurum,
made in France. The lace belongs to our Embroiderers' Guild and I'm writing
an article on it for the magazine. The lace is quite stunning and
technically amazing.

the polar grid which was the subject of discussion some weeks ago.  Also the 
Lace Guild has published three books of original Plotadot grids - Torchon 
and Beds grid, Bucks Point grounds and fillings and  Circular and eliptical 
grids. Each cost 5GBP which includes postage within the UK but not outwith 
it.
