This is from Legacy News (Apr 11th 2012): Genealogy on the Go: the Families App for Legacy - free webinar now online If you are considering going mobile with your genealogy, Legacy Family Tree has the perfect solution. The Families App lets you take your Legacy data, pictures, sources, To Do List and more with you on your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, or Android phone or tablet (which also includes the Kindle Fire, Nook, etc.). In today's webinar, presented by the Families developer, Malcolm Green gave a demonstration of using the app and provided step-by-step instructions for getting it all set up. He also showed how to synchronize your Legacy family file with your mobile device. [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
I'm so glad I attended yesterday's seminar on the Families app for Legacy. I can hardly wait to get it, but first I need the hardware. I have been one of the holdouts--I don't have a smartphone or tablet or anything mobile like that. Have been thinking that it's time and so Im ready to jump in! My question to you Families app users: do you find it a hindrance while you're out in the field doing some research looking at a smaller screen of your Legacy file (in comparison to lugging a laptop around)? I'm considering the 7- or 10-inch tablet as I don't think I could maneuver on such a small screen as a smartphone. Your comments are appreciated. Re: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
The screen size on my Kindle Fire is very adequate. My phone is another issue, but since my Kindle Fire is always by my side I only use the phone for apps if I need internet connection and wi-fi for the Kindle isn't available. When I plan a research trip, I take my 13 laptop so I can enter right into Legacy and it's much more convenient to type on. The onscreen keyboard on mobile devices is really slow to use if you're a touch typist, although I'm getting faster if I have the Kindle Fire situated so I can type with two fingers instead of one. Having a smaller laptop for the field is nice and I definitely don't feel as if I'm lugging it around. But the app on Kindle Fire is great for those unexpected research moments. Re: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
Julia: I use Families on a 10 iPad and find it perfectly legible and pretty easy to navigate although I surely do wish it worked with the iPad's un-pinch feature to enlarge areas of the screen. (My hands are fairly unsteady and I often tap the wrong field.) I love the portability aspect of the program but use it exclusively for reference rather than data entry. Actually, I think that entering data on-site is probably not the best use of research time so I photocopy, photograph, etc., and do the data entry on my computer at home. I rarely enter data in the field on my Kindle Fire, but it is absolutely great to have with me at my local libraries/archives and when I travel. I find the size of the Fire screen more than adequate for reading. Re: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
I recently installed Families on my Iphone4s and it's small but readable. It would be nice to be able to enlarge certain areas if you were having trouble reading something by 'stretching' the screen (some apps but not all allow you to do that) but it's perfect for my needs - I want it with me all the time and I know I will have my phone on me. I don't really want to make changes on it; as I use it, I might change my mind on that so I'm glad it has that capability via IntelliShare in Legacy. After the webinar, I don't think I'd want to directly sync just in case. So I've been saving the Intellishare threads for when I need to do that later. That said, I am probably going to pay a 2nd time to get Families on my Kindle Fire just because it is a larger format; but I'm going to wait until after my next trip to the Family History Library and see how satisfied I am with the Iphone size. In case anyone didnt 'see the webinar, if you buy Families for and I product, you can install it on any of your other I products without buying a 2nd license. As long as you're using the same Itunes account that is. Since Android, Kindle, etc versions are sold via different vendors (Amazon, etc) you have to pay again to buy that version but if you have multiple devices that are recognized by that version, you can install on them all. Watch the webinar and watch the instructions for installing (or the website has instructions); your device will automatically find your devices for you. Very, very cool stuff! I bought a netbook for out of home usage. It runs all my apps just fine. I can type easily on it. It has a very vibrant screen. Very light and easy to travel with to wherever you go. It is the same size as my plip-pal for those documents you would like to scan that you cannot take with you. It also has a camera built into the frame of the screen. I use it for Skype or maybe a quick picture of something. I am sorry I cannot answer your original question. My son has a IPhone and it does look to hard to do research on it. It looked like a display only for Families. I also have a Kindle Touch that stays beside me which works just fine for viewing. I just like my netbook. Re: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
I use Families on both an Android phone and an iPad 2. Both devices have their benefits - as others have said, I always have my phone with me, and find the display very readable. I would not attempt entering data with the phone's keyboard, though! I have used the iPad at the courthouse, archives, etc., but have not entered data, as I would rather make photographs and enter information later. Also, images that are attached to your Legacy file (birth/death certificates, census images, etc.) will transfer to Families, and can be enlarged using the pinch method. This is a great benefit to me, both while researching on site and when sharing information with family members, at reunions, etc. Great webinar yesterday. Even though I've been using Families for a while, I learned some things that I didn't know. Re: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
I just consulted with an owner of an iPad 3 this morning about taking notes. He uses his *iPad 3 *with the *Apple blue tooth keyboard* for note taking in the field all the time. He said the touch screen keyboard is good but not what he likes as a fast typist. He also tried using a program on the iPad 3 that converts stylus-writing to text. He said he could type faster than writing with the large crayon stylus. He says the loves the keyboard. The keyboard looks like it is about the same size as the iPad and very portable. He also has an older iPhone. He says the iPad 3 looks and behaves just like the iPhone, only much faster and better screen than his old iPhone. Tim On 4/12/2012 9:19 AM, julia m wrote: I'm so glad I attended yesterday's seminar on the Families app for Legacy. I can hardly wait to get it, but first I need the hardware. RE: [LegacyUG] Does the size of screen annoy you while using Families for Legacy app?
Thank you all for the feedback! I think I've decided to just use Families to have on trips as reference material (not to enter data.) Since I don't think I can yet budget for a monthly smartphone data plan, I will try one of the tablets--between the Samsung 7 or 10. Question: is this pinch technique app-dependent or hardware-dependent? In other words, does the Families app allow you to view a photo/scanned document source and pinch-in/zoom-in? (maybe I missed this yesterday in the webinar). I can pinch on both my Android phone and the iPad - of course it is much easier to see on the tablet, and one of the great extras in using Families.
