That only changes the number of pictures that can be shown on the
screen. The screen allows scrolling the images when there are more
attached than the number on screen. I have seen cases where over 1,000

Re: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents

2011-12-15 Thread Les Williamson
Hi Folks,

This is my first posting, so be kind with your responses.
I produce personalised family history books for a living, and to get the
best results you need to use more than just Legacy or Word to get a decent
finished book (a printed hard copy that is). You can manage (just) using
Legacy and PDF creation software such as Acrobat (Nitro is much cheaper to
buy for individuals). Myself, I use Legacy to create the usual
ancestral/descendant book report and import it into Quark Express (not a low
cost product - but there are good DTP programs that will do similar).
This is a link to the relevant page on my website (I am not plugging or
advertising it - I'm based in Scotland)
http://www.familytreebooksandcharts.com/products/family-tree-books/ - but I
hope it will give you some fresh ideas for your next family blockbuster.
Look at the demo video clip and/or the example content PDF, there is the odd
glitch in the PDF although you'll get the idea.
The names in the PDF are fictitious, but it won't take rocket science to
figure out that it's based on my own family.
The montages are created by a simple piece of software from Microsoft.

Cheerio,

Sherry, Robert,

It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in
Word. I do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family),
especially my new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about,
but if you've already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply
navigate to the index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one)
and select the option to Update Field. Easy.

You are correct that only one picture can be used for sources in the
source citation list and for events in the narrative reports and web

Well aware of it. What is needed is ability to put multiple images to a
single event that can be shown in reports and web pages. The scrap book
can not be used for either and, worse, removes any context for the
image, so is fairly pointless past its idle entertainment value.

 Sherry-

Does that mean if I were to make an RTF book with an index, and I insert,
say, two pictures for my grandfather, and it pushes the rest of the book
back one additional page, then the index will notice that and automatically
update? (I am doubting it, but will it?)

Re: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents

2011-12-13 Thread Kathy Meyer
Since those digital images ARE the sources of your information, it seems
appropriate to create a SOURCE for each of those items and attach that
digital image to that source. Then when you add a bit of information or an
event, you will add the appropriate source and it will already have the
digital image saved within. Personally, I also attach my digital images to
the events which is probably just double work but it's a step or two
quicker for me to see the image and I often like to see the images for my
events (like census)

I'm not the most experienced pro at using sourcing, pictures, or any of the
other fun features Legacy has but that's my simple approach to it.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents

My family has a large number of source documents and I want to have them as part
of the digital record. I was hoping that there would be a way to link the
scanned images of the original documents to the sources or better yet to the
events as they are listed in Legacy. I was hoping you would be able to help me
with what the best practice would be. Right now the best thing I can think of is
to put the images into the pictures, but there seems to be only room for 6
images.

Thanks for your time.Brian Farkas

RE: [LegacyUG] Best practice for adding scans/PDFs of source documents

2011-12-13 Thread Mark Lang
Brian,

In regards to the last 5 words of your e-m, is incorrect. Only room 6 images
shows in the dialog; you can always add more. You do not need to see an empty
space to add an image, but if you wish to see more blank spaces, simply click
the [+ ] button next to the [Zoom] button.

Kind Regards

Mark Lang

2011-12-13 Thread Wm Voss
Just remember that you can not make any use of the images past the one
marked as preferred. They may be of help to you for record keeping, but
of no use in reports or web pages. This is a short fall of long standing.
