Hi, Mauro My USB driver has registered successfully. The problem is the frontend. I just can not get an available adap-fe pointer. It seems to be a problem on your code. Also, as Patrick and Luca said, the better environment for you to develop a new driver is using a copy of v4l-dvb + your driver. Assuming that your driver is called mydriver, you need just to: a) create a newer dir with your driver: /linux/drivers/media/dvb/mydriver b) Under /linux/drivers/media/dvb/mydriver: create a Kconfig and a Makefile You may use another Kconfig/Makefile as example (for example, pluto2) c) Add your driver directory at /linux/drivers/media/dvb/Makefile: obj-y:= dvb-core/ frontends/ ttpci/ ttusb-dec/ ttusb-budget/ b2c2/ bt8xx/ cinergyT2/ dvb-usb/ pluto2/ mydriver/ d) Add a source line for your driver at /linux/drivers/media/dvb/Kconfig: source drivers/media/dvb/mydriver/Kconfig After that, you will be able to use v4l-dvb makefile to compile your driver. I have participated in another free software project and things were much smoother. I understand that some people will just not get along, but things sound really nasty sometimes here. And to be direct: what are the solutions that you can come up with to improve patch handling? Well I'll soon introduce a few kernel drivers which add the possibility to move i2c tuners (for DVB and V4L - including support for hybrid/multistandard tuners) and demodulators to userspace so that noone has to deal with that project here if he wants to write such drivers. This will make it easier for people to enable support for certain devices since they don't have to submit the code to the kernel anymore, also the firmware problems won't exist there anymore since in userspace applications can easier directly compile them in without having to fear legal issues. In general I miss the _will do_ attitude here even if things aren't perfect at the first time, someone else can always spend some more time on something and make it better - this is only about drivers and not about something that affects the whole internals of the kernel. As as user (and hopefully in a near future tester/coder) I would like to at least see this project moving forward even if love is not pouring from everywhere on the ML ;-) let's see how it will evolve during the next year. [linux-dvb] dvb_ca_en50221.c,h - a hook needed
Dear all, I'm working on a driver for a SCM's CIMaX chip (http://www.scmmicro.com/ir/pdf/10K-Q4-04.pdf - DVB-CI interface). The driver is supposed to be used at our proprietary HW platform. I'd like to use the dvb-core as a (great) platform for the driver. However, IMHO it lacks the following functionality: before using the CIMaX chip I have to set up some registers that configure the voltages it uses, pin assignment etc, the most natural place to do it is while open()-ing the device, but the dvb_ca_en50221_io_open() has no hook (smth like int (*slot_reset)() ) available, and I don't want to put any chip-wide initialization code to driver's init function (the driver is supposed to deal with with few CIMaXes) Any ideas ? thanks in advance, Akiva Sadovski ___ linux-dvb mailing list linux-dvb@linuxtv.org http://www.linuxtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/linux-dvb

But i didn't really follow this part, if you mean the Hot Insertion feature on the CIMAx, just add in flag to say ca-flags (you need to define the flag though) and just do the code run conditionally based on the flag, say something like DVB_CA_EN50221_HOT_INSERT to conditionally enable the Reset code in dvb_ca_en50221. That would help ? Is that what you were asking ? and I don't want to put any chip-wide initialization code to driver's init function (the driver is supposed to deal with with few CIMaXes) device specific code has to go into the device specific driver alone. I have posted twice, with no appearance in the list, a message about remote control errors (tons of them in syslog!). I saw that you made a commit in your tree about remote control stuff. Is that related? I'll try a new build tonight. If the sample below is what your remote control errors in syslog is, the attached patch gets rid of it. --- Aug 1 13:44:26 ragnyr kernel: dib0700: Unknown remote controller key : 1E 2A Aug 1 13:44:57 ragnyr last message repeated 206 times Aug 1 13:45:58 ragnyr last message repeated 406 times Aug 1 13:46:59 ragnyr last message repeated 407 times Aug 1 13:48:00 ragnyr last message repeated 406 times Aug 1 13:49:01 ragnyr last message repeated 406 times Aug 1 13:50:02 ragnyr last message repeated 407 times --- When an unknown key code is received, it is not eaten and the module keeps yelling about it using printk()s. A bunch of times per second. Until the next valid key code is received. And this happens as soon as I use any unsupported device (like power on/off my surround system). The Nova-T IR receiver gets the IR code by accident and as a result the module starts screaming. I'm not sure but this screaming possibly killed (rebooted) my box as well. I applied the new code, tested it for a few hours, and then went to bed last night. When I woke up the box had rebooted (no mentions of why in syslog, though). After applying the attached patch, my system has been stable (about a 10 hours by now). I'm still not entirely satisfied with the RC solution for dvb-usb-remote (translating with a hardcoded list in the module and then sending (sometimes in-)appropriate key codes in to the kernel as though entered by the keyboard. Anyone know if it would be difficult to deliver the received key codes through a netlink device (or similar) that can be read by lircd? We can't help much in such a case, the only thing what we can do is to ignore them. Basically trolls are people who find it hard to mix in their surroundings and or community and hence they do not have anything else to do and hence find more interest in trolling/insulting others. My request is that all you folks just ignore the trolls, once they are found to be trolls, ignore them completely in all senses. Sometimes, they throw in small technical pieces, such as to attract as bait, but it would be up to the users not to take the bait. Regards, Manu Manu, could you be a bit more precise about _your personal_ troll list? Since I suspect you are still sending unrequested mails, announced as PRIVATE NOTES, behind the visible lines, like you did with me, when I asked, why you always cry like mad in case something comes in from v4l? The most evil troll stuff I have ever seen came exactly from you. Most evil, because not even public, and leaving only one choice, agree with your personal feelings or die. We have discussed on this internally, since you have been on the trip who rules by the sword, must die by the sword and found all sort of excuses for you, and hoped again ... Like I did after you firstly were going out of any known rules, waiting for about six weeks, if that could ever be really be meant serious ... Nothing happened! Mike, as I know now, abused by you for your run against Mauro, as said already, you could have had it all during long previously, has not seen any excuse until now, not to talk about Mauro. You did not talk to the v4l maintainer for one year, just some misunderstanding on bttv v4l2 conversion was enough for that, you had all time before to do something better on it, it was wide open. YOU HAVE NOT BEEN SEEN AT ALL. After all, it seems to me that you are exactly the backstage politician you claim others to be. There is _nobody_ else on linux-dvb, who ever behaved like that. Re: [linux-dvb] How could I compile dvb-usb-cxusb module out of the kernel source.
You run make menuconfig in the v4l-dvb/v4l directory and you select the Conexant USB2.0 hybrid reference design support only, and it will compile. Yeah. This works. But when I add mydriver.c in the directory linux/driver/media/dvb/dvb-usb and exec the same command, some errors occured. The script make_myconfig.pl just can't work properly. So do you have any advice?___ linux-dvb mailing list linux-dvb@linuxtv.org http://www.linuxtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/linux-dvb
[linux-dvb] [RFC PATCH] Choose dvb adapter number with a driver specific module option
Hi, Dynamic loading of modules by udev on startup (aka coldplugging) doesn't result in deterministic dvb adapter numbers. V4L drivers have the {radio|vbi|video}_nr module options to allocate static minor numbers per driver. Attached patch adds a similiar mechanism to the dvb subsystem. To avoid problems with device unplugging and repluging each driver holds a DVB_MAX_ADAPTER long array of the preffered order of adapter numbers. options dvb-usb-dib0700 adapter_nr=7,6,5,4,3,2,1,0 would result in a reversed allocation of adapter numbers. With adapter_nr=2,5 it tries first to get adapter number 2 and 5. If both are already in use it will allocate the lowest free adapter number. Besides following changes in dvb-core and dvb-usb core the patch adds to all drivers +static int adapter_nr[] = {[0 ... (DVB_MAX_ADAPTERS - 1)] = DVB_UNSET }; +module_param_array(adapter_nr, int, NULL, 0444); +MODULE_PARM_DESC(adapter_nr,DVB adapter numbers); and modifies the dvb_register_adapter call. Full patch is attached as compressed file. With the exception of dvb-usb I have just added the paramter to the module with the dvb_register_adapter() call. budget-core and videobuf-dvb are affected for example. I'll push the option to the driver which uses these modules after we reached consent on the approach. Re: [linux-dvb] Doubt about the file: dvb-usb-dvb.c
a) create a newer dir with your driver: /linux/drivers/media/dvb/mydriver b) Under /linux/drivers/media/dvb/mydriver: create a Kconfig and a Makefile You may use another Kconfig/Makefile as example (for example, pluto2) c) Add your driver directory at /linux/drivers/media/dvb/Makefile: obj-y:= dvb-core/ frontends/ ttpci/ ttusb-dec/ ttusb-budget/ b2c2/ bt8xx/ cinergyT2/ dvb-usb/ pluto2/ mydriver/ d) Add a source line for your driver at /linux/drivers/media/dvb/Kconfig: source drivers/media/dvb/mydriver/Kconfig After that, you will be able to use v4l-dvb makefile to compile your driver. With make help you'll see some useful syntax that may help your development. Dear Mauro: I had my problem solved last week, thank you all the same for clear answer. And I compile my module in the 2.6.20-15 kernel. Now I want to compile the module in v4l-dvb tree, I did it this way: I put my usb adapter program named usb-adapter.c in linux/drivers/media/dvb/dvb-usb, and I modified the Makefile and Kconfig to add my usb adapter module; I put my frontend program named my-frontend.c in linux/drivers/media/dvb/frontend and I modified the Makefile and Kconfig to add my frontend module; But the v4l-dvb tree can't compile. There is some problem with the script make_myconfig.pl. Do you have any advice about this issue? ___ linux-dvb mailing list linux-dvb@linuxtv.org http://www.linuxtv.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/linux-dvb

Don't worry, this happens from time to time. It is a problem in the good old USENET, and there is the same problem in the Internet. Apparently we have to live with it. If you are really interested, look at the mailing list archives and you will see, when this started and who is responsible... Simply blacklist the offending mail addresses, and they will never bother you again. ;-) Meanwhile I have blacklisted 3 or 4 list users. Isn't the usual response to write some udev rules to set the name based on device characteristics? Thus taking the naming policy out of the module and into userspace. Since you're defining a numbering order when you load the module, if you have 2 or more devices which use the module then your solution doesn't solve the problem of controlling the numbers because it depends which device the kernel finds first. With udev, if there's some way to distinguish between two of the same device, then rules can be written to set the name of each.
