Wireless car in Christchurch?

2009-11-25 Thread Craig Falconer
Does anyone know anything about a blue Nissan TIIDA with the licence
plate ETS847 ?

I've seen it twice now, driving around Christchurch.

The odd thing is, its got about five wireless ethernet aerials on the
roof, and its been going up and down random side streets.

Its not a google car - there's no pole mounted camera or anything, and I
didn't get close enough to see the driver or any gear inside.

I'm curious enough to order the carjam report and see who owns it.
Anyone know any more than that?

Or building a wireless coverage map (not necessarily WiFi)?

The aerials looked like simple $10 magnetic base ones, with cables
snaking loose over the roof and into a rear door. Not exactly
industrial quality.

Looks dodgy to a knowledgeable eye, probably is.

Haven't seen the car, but if it looked suspicious enough to me, I'd call
the authorities.

Worst that can happen is a news snippet at 6pm saying that a car
belonging to a legit organisation doing some work in town was so poorly
equipped that it raised the suspicion of the tech savvy Christchurch
public enough to call the police.

Best case scenario you stop dead a scam in progress.

Skype on Kubuntu

2009-11-25 Thread Christopher Sawtell
Has anybody got Skype ( ver. 2.1.0.47 ) video to work on (K)ubuntu Kosmic
Koala ( or what ever it is that they are callling the 9.10 version - I
forget ) ?

My logitech webcam used to work with earlier Kubuntus, but now all I get is
a grey background.

Any war stories - both good and bad - and a fix would be most welcome.

Yup, sound/video works fine on my Sony Vaio (VGN-SR16GN), which has an
internal camera/mic.

Video worked OOTB but had to muck with the modprobe stuff to get the mic
to work as per the howtos here[1]. Very Sony Vaio-specific though :(

Krashing Koala, I find. Hopefully the recent nvidia fixups will help.

I am having a good experience with Kubuntu 9.10.

Skype version 2.1.0.47 seems fine although my mic (part of the webcam) volume
went full and distorted by itself once.

My logitech quickcam pro 9000 works just fine out of the box with Ubuntu 9.10.

iirc My webcam is a Logitech 3500. ( usb id number:- 046d:09a4 )

Well, I have now discovered ( Thanks Robert ) that the camera works ok. It's
the display of camera output on the options - video devices window which is
not working. Click the Test bar, the camera indicator LED lights, but
nothing shows up in the place where a little picture is supposed to be
displayed. Double click on the Test bar and the whole screen goes light
grey.

This is on a T41 ThinkPad. ATI vid card.

More help solicited.

Same as mine.

Well this is weird. I just checked mine and got the same result (single
click on test and nothing happens, double click and full screen goes grey)

As I suggested in our chat Chris, whenever I have had trouble with my
camera I seem to be able to unplug it (while computer is on) then plug
it back in and all seems fine again.

Did this work for you?

Unfortunately not.

I suppose it's the fact that Skype is beta grade software.

It works well when driven by mplayer.
