the languages you use in your document either in \documentclass[langs]

my school's fault, not mine, that I don't use a true operating system. Please

OK. So it might be that LyX is using some encoding at file storage level and
something else at display level. People sometimes run into this trouble in
Win#@ too: they enter (unknowingly, of course) utf text in some version of
W*rd, and they get white squares at another...
The solution is to use the same encoding consistently in both system file
storage and application. If you set the locale (or whatever input device you
are using) to use ISO-8859-1 (Latin 1) for display, and set \usepackage[latin1]
{inputenc} in the preamble of your LyX/LaTeX file, you should get something
close to what you want: the characters on screen are those stored in file. I
do something like this to fix some odd-encoded files in Win#@, and it works...

I know that UTF-8 is not mandatory for XML, but it seems to me that switch to XML would be so big, that Unicodization would be trivial in comparison (and it would be really helpful if in future LyX would go towards KDEization -- do I understand it correctly that you have to be Unicodized in order to be KDE?). The fact that couple of people mentioned acronyms like DTD in the last couple of days seems to be hopeful (of course, I do not hope for anything earlier than 1.5, but still it is better than nothing). It's from Iñaki García Etxebarria (patch attached). The patch does the correct
thing from all that I know [1], but it only implements accent-caron. It would
be great if someone could pick it up and try a general version. Too bad that
Iñaki is too busy ...

Hello all, Thank you for your quick and constructive help so far. It is really helpful - at least I know that it is not my fault.. All characters work well in all other applications, so this is not a problem with xorg- or X11 configuration. The workarounds sound well, unfortunately they are not acceptable for the usual textprocessing user who has no clue about the underlying processes of programmes and is not at all inclined to use shortcuts or ERT. As a user belonging at least partly to that group I am simply afraid to kick out my qt-version and trying to compile it myself. Good heaven, knocking down my system is the most probable thing that is going to happen and the least desirable at this moment ... The most suitable solution in my case seems to be the one with lyx for xforms - the only problem being that I have not able so far to complile the src.rpm of libforms due to allegdly missing xpm. Well, I will have another look at the install file - it is the first time I am forced to compile something so this is probably my mistake. I am sorry I cannot contribute a single line of code to this great programme the lyx developers gave to the open source community. Thank you so far for your work - it is really appreciated! We are having a look at Iñaki García Etxebarria's immodule patch now. If we can get it working in the 1.4.x tree then it'll probably get backported to the 1.3.x tree too. this is my experience in to domesticate lyx (qt version) for work with spanish
in suse linux.
I think that part of this problem reside in the complex, very numerous and
often duplicate collection of config files of linux in general.
*** Accents and ñ no availables (dead keys)
In accordance with advises I make countless modifications an every config file,
and re-compilations of lyx. No work.
When advises indicate that errors in qt lib to be guilty I re-install qt lib,
re-compiled kernel, and I make sacrifices of lamb to the goddess. Nothing work.
(but then, lamb roasted was very tasty)
Then, I think that if keyboard work well in other soft packages perhaps qt lib
is not responsible for dead keys.
I download rpm of lyx pre-compiled for suse, install it, and dead keys work!
(ñ work ok, I found accents and others in differents keys but is good for now)
Perhaps qt lib is not guilty of dead keys.
*** Hyphenation no work
In log file of latex I can see that module of spanish hyphenation not was
loaded for latex. In accordance with advices I edited
/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat
and then
run iniTeX
and several others actions along several weeks, none of this work.
I found other file named language.dat in
/usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config
when I edited this file, latex loaded spanish module but NOT execute
hyphenation in spanish and even though I have
\language spanish
in my lyx file, in my output appears title - Inhaltsverzeichnis - (¿¡ag!?

instead of - Índice General -.
Then, I replace in preamble
usepackage[spanish, english, german]{babel}
for
usepackage[spanish]{babel}
and hyphenation work well and german go home ;-)

Strange - looks like "keyboard problems" to me, I have no problem
typing accented characters like "Ã".
Do you get the characters you need in other apps (such as email,
xterm, and text editors?) If so, how?
I use a Norwegian keyboard with dead keys. To get
a "Ã" I first type "~" and then "n". Getting other accents
works the same way, first type the accent and then the
letter. The downside of "dead keys" is more keypresses when
you occationally need some accent symbol without a letter
unde it. Then you have to type accent+space. (So,
entering formulas with exponents means typing
"x", "^", " ", "2" to get x squared.

Replacing "no" with the desired country code ("es" ?) might be
worth a try. This works with lyx-1.3.4 (from debian),
the developing lyx-1.4, and almost every other
program I use.

Hello all, Thank you for your quick and constructive help so far. It is really helpful - at least I know that it is not my fault.. All characters work well in all other applications, so this is not a problem with xorg- or X11 configuration. The workarounds sound well, unfortunately they are not acceptable for the usual textprocessing user who has no clue about the underlying processes of programmes and is not at all inclined to use shortcuts or ERT. As a user belonging at least partly to that group I am simply afraid to kick out my qt-version and trying to compile it myself. Good heaven, knocking down my system is the most probable thing that is going to happen and the least desirable at this moment ... The most suitable solution in my case seems to be the one with lyx for xforms - the only problem being that I have not able so far to complile the src.rpm of libforms due to allegdly missing xpm. Well, I will have another look at the install file - it is the first time I am forced to compile something so this is probably my mistake. I am sorry I cannot contribute a single line of code to this great programme the lyx developers gave to the open source community. Thank you so far for your work - it is really appreciated! this is my experience in to domesticate lyx (qt version) for work with spanish
in suse linux.
I think that part of this problem reside in the complex, very numerous and
often duplicate collection of config files of linux in general.
*** Accents and ñ no availables (dead keys)
In accordance with advises I make countless modifications an every config file,
and re-compilations of lyx. No work.
When advises indicate that errors in qt lib to be guilty I re-install qt lib,
re-compiled kernel, and I make sacrifices of lamb to the goddess. Nothing work.
(but then, lamb roasted was very tasty)
Then, I think that if keyboard work well in other soft packages perhaps qt lib
is not responsible for dead keys.
I download rpm of lyx pre-compiled for suse, install it, and dead keys work!
(ñ work ok, I found accents and others in differents keys but is good for now)
Perhaps qt lib is not guilty of dead keys.
*** Hyphenation no work
In log file of latex I can see that module of spanish hyphenation not was
loaded for latex. In accordance with advices I edited
/usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/language.dat
and then
run iniTeX
and several others actions along several weeks, none of this work.
I found other file named language.dat in
/usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config
when I edited this file, latex loaded spanish module but NOT execute
hyphenation in spanish and even though I have
\language spanish
in my lyx file, in my output appears title - Inhaltsverzeichnis - (¿¡ag!?
;-)
instead of - Índice General -.
Then, I replace in preamble
usepackage[spanish, english, german]{babel}
for
usepackage[spanish]{babel}
and hyphenation work well and german go home ;-)
I had add english and german with hope of get spellcheck in this language but I
had deleted it.

Other problems remains:
1) When I invoke Find & Replace I can't to type accented characters or ñ equals
to the used for lyx in the text. This characters look equals but are differents
in code.
2) I defined double quoted and I can't to type this in Find & Replace.
3) When I include Chapter* in TOC with ERT: \addcontents ... a point appears in
the left of the entry. This not occur in english.
4) I have an hybrid style. After itemizes, tables, fig, etc. next paragraph is
not indented. After title of section the paragraph get indentation. I need
modify a lot of paragraph for get coherence.

Until now my girlfriend didn't give a damn about it and preferred OpenOffice, but when I showed her the first chapter printed out she nearly fainted, especially when she understood the possibilities of BibTeX. Well, I thought, this is my chance, and gave her a brief introduction into LyX (it's always better to wait until people ask you than to agitate them, but that is another topic...). Well, the presentation started off quite well but ended in an embarassing disaster. Copy your bind file (e.g. cua.bind) from /usr/share/lyx/bind/ to ~/.lyx/bind/ and add the line \bind F12 accent-tilde n etc. HTH, Jrgen

Copy your bind file (e.g. cua.bind) from /usr/share/lyx/bind/ to ~/.lyx/bind/ and add the line \bind "F12" "accent-tilde n" etc. HTH, JÃrgen

(I'm pretty sure that it was to this list.) Unfortunately, I don't think that anyone picked it up, or even said thank you. hola, Excuse me for my english. I have an equal problem and equal system. I resolved this problem. I compiled Lyx and accents and ñ no work. I installed Lyx 1.3.5 from rpm (for suse) and found that ñ work ok and accents appears in other key (in the key at right of key with character zero). Other character (like ö) too appears in other keys. I accept this solution. I have strong problem with hyphenation in spanish. I solved this problem too. With much work I get that lyx work in spanish. It was very, very, hard. Suerte. Saludos.
