And in a contretemps of international intrigue and presidential politics
that generated heated debate for years, Mrs. Chennault was recorded on an
F.B.I. wiretap helping to sabotage a peace initiative during the Vietnam
War in order to promote Nixon’s victory over Vice President Hubert H.
Humphrey in the 1968 presidential election.

Soon after President Lyndon B. Johnson announced a halt to the bombing of
North Vietnam to ease the way for Paris peace talks that fall, Mrs.
Chennault, a behind-the-scenes liaison for Nixon’s campaign and the Saigon
government, was overheard urging South Vietnamese officials to boycott the
Paris peace talks, saying they would get a better deal from a Nixon
administration if they waited until after the election.

That same day, Nov. 2, President Thieu announced that his government would
not join the Paris talks. Three days later, Nixon was elected.

President Johnson was furious when he learned of Mrs. Chennault’s
intervention, and considered having her charged under federal statutes with
criminally interfering with the conduct of foreign affairs. She was never
prosecuted.

Nestle is extracting fresh water for next to nothing while Flint residents
still can't drink water from their faucets. In many locations including
Livingston County in Michigan, where I'm originally from, they are rapidly
building infrastructure to extract gas through fracking. On top of that,
we've got an aging pipeline running through the straits of Mackinac (Line
5), ready to spill millions of gallons of oil into a system that contains
21% of the world's freshwater.

Things are bad here in Michigan.

Ernie, I haven't seen "Barbara" but I refer to it favorably in this
piece. I got a chuckle out of the NY Times article referring to
"mustache-twirling villain", the same words I used in my Counterpunch
article:

In a NY Times profile of Christian Petzold, the director of “Barbara”,
he states that he did not want Stasi operatives to be “depicted as
mustache-twirling villains”. The eponymous lead character is a doctor
who has been banished to the countryside for some unspecified offense,
where she is snooped on by Stasi operatives. We learn from a review of
the film that Petzold was influenced by Alfred Hitchcock, evidence of
which is “the prickles of unease that creep into his work, creating a
cold climate of paranoia and an oft-justified fear of an imminent
threat.” I haven’t seen this film but when it comes to prickles of
unease, you can’t help but think of Hitchcock’s “Torn Curtain”, where
mustache-twirling villains abound.

"Unlike all of the films about East Germany I am aware of, except for “Goodbye
Lenin!”, “In Times of Fading Light” does not demonize German Communists, who
tend to be depicted as mustache-twirlers like the Nazis they opposed."

Have you seen Christian Petzold's "*Barbara"*? In some sense Petzold's film
follows Godard's dictum that the best way to critique a film is to make a film.
Petzold, who created a Stasi character who defied the well worn stereotype, was
obviously disturbed by "*The Lives of Others"*. It's a movie worth seeing.

Between April 6th and 12th, the Landmark Theater on W. 57thStreet in New
York will be hosting a festival of recent German films of great interest
to cinephiles based on the evidence of two press screeners I saw that
have much in common besides being well-made. To start with, both have
nonagenarian main characters played by two of Germany’s most renowned
actors.

As a 90-year old Communist about to celebrate his birthday in opening
night’s “In Times of Fading Light”, Bruno Ganz might be best known to
most folks for his portrayal of Adolf Hitler in “Downfall” but the
77-year old actor’s career encompasses a wide range of heralded roles
ranging from art films made by Wim Wenders (The American Friend; Wings
of Desire) to Hollywood films like “The Boys from Brazil”. “In Times of
Fading Light” is set in 1989 as the Berlin Wall is about to come down.
The fading light referred to in the title is Communism’s twilight.

Exactly the same age as Ganz, Jurgen Prochnow plays a 92-year old
Wehrmacht veteran named Eduard Leander in “The Final Journey”, who led a
regiment of Ukrainian Cossacks during WWII. The film’s title refers to
his odyssey to find the woman he loved in a Luhansk village against the
backdrop of a new war involving some of the same geopolitical cleavages.
Like Ganz, Prochnow has a long and distinguished career and is best
known for playing the German submarine commander in “Das Boot”. Deemed
controversial at the time for showing German soldiers without the
stereotypical mustache-twirling villainy seen in Hollywood films, “The
Final Journey” could conceivably be accused of whitewashing Nazi war
crimes—that is, unless you understand that his character paid dearly for
them.

Sixteen months into the War Karl Marx—as if anticipating apologists like
Brooks 160 years later—criticized Lincoln for “trying to conduct it
along constitutional” lines. “I think,” he contended, “that wars of this
kind ought to be conducted along revolutionary lines.” It pleased him to
no end, then, when Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation more
than a month later. The Executive Order abolishing slavery was, in
Marx’s opinion, “tantamount to the tearing up of the old American
Constitution.” Depriving the slave owners of their slaves was one of the
biggest property expropriations in history and a clear violation of the
Fifth Amendment’s prohibition of such confiscations without “due
process” and “just compensation”; and why Lincoln could say with
justification later that year in Gettysburg that the country now had “a
new birth of freedom.”
