Ok, here's a weird little problem for you. Although I did get IP
masquerading working last night, none of the lines I've added to the
rc.local file seem to be executed. I addes two line that make 'ls'
 display
in colour and make 'dir' an alias for 'ls'. After that there are two
'ipfwadm' that enable the IP masq... Neither one seems to work. When I
reboot the computer I must type in these lines manually to get them to
work. Any ideas why? Is there another file which specifies which scripts
are run? Is there another initialization file that I should be using
  instead of '/etc/rc.d/rc.local'?

I'm not exactly clear about your problem. Do the first two entries
pertaining to ls work but not the ipfwadm entries? In that case I would
suspect a path or permission problem. Do the ipfwadm entries have a full
 path to the executable?

If nothing you added works then probably rc.local isn't being called. I
don't remember exactly, but I think it is called by rc.M. The relevant
line may be commented out. You could find where is it called pretty quick
 with something like

 $grep rc.local /etc/rc.d/rc.*

Re: [masq] Which distribution for LRP / IP Masq projects?

1998-08-28 Thread Joe Duncan

Which distribution to go with, is I believe, a matter of personal
taste.
I have worked with two personally, Slackware and Red Hat. The version
of Slackware I had was a bit older, but overall I like Red Hat better. Red
Hat 5.0 comes with many of the kernel modules already created and
compiled and seems to me to be more user friendly than Slackware...
That's my 2 cents...

business need to learn this stuff. I need to build a dual ethernet router
with IP MASQ - /or NAT capabilities. Hopefully, I'll even be able to
integrate 3COM's cable modem ( model #2699 ) into the box possibly ISDN
modem. From there I'll try grander things such as IMAP4 server, web server

OK, here's my question: For this application - a router box with IP MASQ

All opinions are certainly welcome.

[masq] ICQ Chat (was: Problem with rc.local)

1998-08-28 Thread Joe Duncan

Ok, I've solved the rc.local problem, my system works fine,
and seeing as how the list seems to have been inundated
with off-topic postings on the subject I'd ask that we kill that
thread.

On to some on-topic IP Masq. stuff. Everything seemed to
work fine at first and all the guides I've gotten say ICQ should
work, with no modifications to Linux, but it seems that I cannot
connect with ICQ chat. Anyone know a solution?

you've probably gotten other answers already, but

you want to put the commands you're specifying in the user's login file
(kinda
like a user specific autoexec.bat file). Depending on the login shell
you're
using, this file could be .login .cshrc or something else even.

If you haven't solved this problem yet, let me know what shell you're
using.

Also, you might want to pick up a good intro to Unix or Linux book. At
first
glance, things seem very easy, but you can also miss a lot of the power
flexibility without some background (I don't think I have enough background
myself, but I can still suggest that to other people :) )

If you are only putting together one or two computers every couple of
months I would use Redhat or SuSe because you can up grade the software
in place.

If you are putting in five a day or something like this Slackware seems
to be the best for configuration of what packages to install without
having to select each package.

achieve full functionality of ICQ behind a Masq box, is to install a SOCKS5

Hmmm. Times out on large transfers, eh? I guess these are outgoing
transfers. Can you, say, ftp a large file out from the same machine,
without that connection timing out? Make sure it's the same amount of
data, going in the same direction, and see if you get the same behavior.

It could be a masq problem, maybe involving IP fragmentation, though you
usually see more problems like that in-bound, rather than out-bound.

1998-08-28 Thread Frode Hauge

You can get 100% functionality without that. Forward a set
of ports to the machine you intend to run ICQ on (assuming
you have a simple setup where it's mainly to be run from
1 machine behind the masq). Then set ICQ up to go through
a firewall using those specific ports. Voila, filereceive, chat
requests, everything works perfectly.

[snip]
In fact, everything except Chat did not work when you said you were not
behind a firewall. You should also not be able to receive incoming messages
unless they are sent through the server. Saying you are behind a firewall
will maximize what works, but it is still not fully functional because of
the restriction inherent in being behind a firewall (that you cannot
receive incoming connections). The best solution, and the only way to

Re: [masq] Problem with rc.local

1998-08-28 Thread Jose M. Sanchez

Actually these are two seperate problems...

1) You are attempting to execute ipfwadm during the boot process from within
rc.local.

While there is nothing wrong with this, the full path to the program MUST be
specified.

Normally this shell script gets executed BEFORE search paths are set...

just change it to /sbin/ipfwadm... etc.

2) The alias only works for the specific shell you are using... Do not put
this command in rc.local but rather in
.bashrc or /etc/profile.

On Thu, 27 Aug 1998, Fuzzy Fox wrote:

So, it must be when sendmail tried to route the message from there, that

My guess is that your mailer has a max-message-size defined, that you
need to increase (or turn off).

That was already turned off:
# maximum message size
#O MaxMessageSize=100

I find out, that it is not due to binary attachments that sendmail hangs,
because it does not send any attachments larger than 5kB.
And the errormessage in /var/log/maillog says that it timed out.
Is there a better way to debug ???

You can use ipautofw for that - check out http://masqapps.home.ml.org,
