You can set up a base class that all of your other controllers will
extend and in the base class you can get your connection pool ready and
store in a context attribute, then all of the controllers can easily
grab connections.

What are best pratices in Maverick for
handling things that would of been done in a Servlet's init routine.
Specifically I would like to set up connection pooling for all future
Oracle database connections.
  Your suggestions are appreciated.

Right now the only way for a controller to get config information is to
examine the JDOM config document that it can obtain from the dispatcher.
It's certainly possible to build this facility though. You just need a
list of names?
A * view should be easy to implement, just tweak
CommandMultipleViews.getView().

Is it possible for a controller to obtain a list of which Views are
registered to the instant Command? The use case is that I want the
controller to select a View by matching it to an input parameter.
A second, but related question, is how one would go about implementing

a

* feature for Views? Which is to say, if the View requested is not
available, use the View named * instead. (Like what the Dispatcher
does when it can't find a Command, but for Views within Commands.) The
use case is that I have Controllers that look for different standard
Views, which sometimes all go to one place, but other times do not.

Re: [Mav-user] ${model} question

2003-09-30 Thread Travis Reeder
model is the Controller that you specify in maverick.xml. This
controller is stuffed in the the request attributes under the name
model.

To get the model outside of jstl might make more sense:

MyController model = (MyController)request.getAttribute(model);

So ${model.dest} would be actually something like model.getDest();

jstl just makes it easier (less lines).

Jaap van Hengstum wrote:

At the moment, I use a combination of (1) and (2). A disadvantage of (4) - if I see it correctly - is that I create messages at runtime (f.e. validation error messages) and it would be more complicated in the view if I had to create them at compiletime.

The way I do it now is, I use my own Filter Chain implementation (which looks very similar to the Commons Chain used by Ted Huster in the FormProc controller below) to generate a Locale from the http request/session. This Locale can then be used both in the business logic (if necessary) and in the views. To use the Locale in the view, I use a subclassed FreeMarker servlet that generates a tool that the view can use to load ResourceBundles based on the specified Locale. Freemarker is a template language similar to Velocity, so I guess you can do the same using a Velocity Tool.

As for localization, the FreeMarker servlet can use the same Locale to set the default FreeMarker Locale. FreeMarker uses this locale to display dates, currencies, and so forth so if a view displays a date (without specifying a locale) it is automatically formatted using the user's locale. I suspect Velocity can do the same (using a Tool perhaps).

If I were to use jsp views in the future, I would be able to do about the same thing, using a taglibrary instead of a Velocity/FreeMarker tool. Using xml as views, the thing would be a little more complicated since (obviously) you can't use Java ResourceBundles in xsl, but I guess it should be possible to include different xsl based on the locale.

I would like to know what do you think is the best way to write
localized messages in web application. I have a few possibilities:
1. Servlet Filter (outputstream search/replaces)
2. Resource Bundles
3. Database lookups
4. Ant task that does the replaces and deploys each
language in it's own dir and then use Maverick's
   shunting.
5. Add yours.
I'm thinking about option 4 as the best alternative. What do you think?

Doug Kirk wrote:
Hmmm. I have the following in my web.xml and it works just fine:

*.vm is mapped to the VelocityLayoutServlet in my webapp's web.xml.

I would expect a specification of 'index.m' to work as well, since it's
just running the servlet that's mapped to '*.m'. And after all, '*.jsp'
is just a mapping to the JspServlet in the master web.xml in the Tomcat
configuration.

So, in Tomcat (at least 4.1.24), I think setting the welcome file list
in web.xml appropriately should work.

How can you set up the default page to work like index.jsp would

This should probably be a FAQ. As cheesey as it sounds, create an
index.jsp with the content:
jsp:forward page=welcome.m/

Sun offered us no way to use a servlet as a default page, so it has to
be either a html or a jsp page :-(

Hmm, kind of a pain. I'll have 4 views per command. ex: nosite,
noaccess, loginRequired, success.

Don't the benefits of having the global views outway the mistakes that
few users might make?

If you have multiple views and one does not have a name, does that one
get named success?

Schnitzer, Jeff wrote:

I noticed in the friendbook example that almost every command has

view name=loginRequired ref=loginRequired/
view name=loginFailed ref=loginFailed/
Is there anyway to forward to those in the code without having to have
them in all the commands?

This comes up every so often (hey, another FAQ). The short answer is
that Maverick 1.0 used to make all global views implicitly available
from all commands, and it caused a lot of user mistakes. So after some
discussion we changed this behavior. If you are trying to make your
config file a bit more terse, I suggest using an XSLT transform on the
config file (with the configTransform init-param).
Here's the last time it came up:
