Re: [MCN-L] THoughts about App vs. Responsive Web site?

2016-11-01 Thread Andrew Lewis
I'm not doing front-end products in my current role, but back in 2014, I opined
thus after having attended MuseumNext:
http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/digital-media/museumnext2014-apps-v-web
It's not especially enlightening :)

In short though, it epends on what your business aim is when making a customer
product. Start with user stories and see what suits it best, I'd suggest.
That should include staff users too if you consider strategic business
intelligence gathering as part of the function of a digital service, as well as
the front-end experience (which of course you should)

For this question, are you talking about on the visitor's own devices?
Others may have data on this, where I just have opinions/experience, but

a) getting most people to use anything takes effort
b) getting anyone to install and use an app takes a LOT of effort.

If you're talking about the loaner devices, an app still makes certain things
easier, especially related to offline, controls, screen real estate, that kind
of thing. But if you have pervasive good connections and a staff that's more
skilled in webapps, that could tip the balance in that direction. Also, for
most of us, web dev still makes experimentation, deployment, and iteration
easier.

Re: [MCN-L] THoughts about App vs. Responsive Web site?

2016-10-28 Thread Tamsen Young
Hi Floyd,

We are about to launch (in December) our first cell phone tour of an
exhibition. In researching the options, we decided that creating a
web-based app was the best solution for us. Since the cell phone tour is
for an exhibition on view for a limited time, we did not see how we could
communicate the value of downloading an app to their phones.

Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, a traditional app would not be as
accessible to as many visitors, as many of the 'affordable' options are for
iPhones only. The vendor we selected also has a dial-in feature for
visitors without smartphones. Since our audience has a significant older
population, this was not an insignificant consideration.

Hope this is helpful.

Best,
