[meteorite-list] List of Dealers that have passed away or no longer selling

2023-12-04 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Hi List and Happy Holidays.

Forgive me that I have been out of the game of Selling and Buying meteorites
for a good bunch of years. Recently I took some time checking the internet
going back to check some of the Meteorite Dealers Websites and ran into some
websites being closed down. I do read some of the meteorite-list postings every
now and than to stay somewhat abreast on the world of meteorites.

Can someone tell me what happened to Michael Blood's Website. Did Michael
CottIngham (probably spelled his last name wrong, sorry) get out of meteorites.
The Hupe brothers?

Can you also share some of the renown Dealers that got out of the game so to
speak and or that have passed away say over the last 5 years.

Appreciate it!

Sincerely

Re: [meteorite-list] Who sold their collection to a pawn shop?

2020-12-01 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Its funny bringing this up. "Low ball" most likely. Not easy selling an
entire collection since the world of collecting meteorites is tiny
percentage compared to other type hobbies. I know when I sold my collection
I Thoroughly and meticulously spent 4 months going through many Dealer
sites to get an idea what prices were fair for my collection piece by piece
and what I truly spent on it over a 20 year period. I was stunned what low
ball offers I received by Dealers and Collectors, yet they sell their pieces
on their sites for top dollar!

I decided to sell my collection to an institution that we both agreed in
writing to never resell my collection for profit but rather display the
collection as a way to draw Folks to the institution for learning and
educational purposes. The institution would make money via an admission fee
to view the collection and other attractions they have set up. Did I take a
loss? You bet I did, but at least I know my efforts, time and money over 20
years collecting meteorites was not in vain. It will now be viewed by
thousands of Folks rather than a few if I just displayed the collection in
my house, thus worth it. I left a legacy so to speak as my name is displayed
on the collection in the institution and I can travel and see my collection
free at any time!

I sold my collection because as I got older I did not want to leave it to be
sold by my family after I take my last breath here on this Earth. They would
have had no idea where to begin with it and or how to sell it nor what value
it was worth. A burden I did not want to leave them.

With the Covid 19 running this world into the ground, especially Folks
losing their jobs, houses etc. it would not surprise me some collector
needing quick cash from a Pawn shop to pay bills and such. Desperate times
call for desperate measures. Sad as it is, we do what we need to do.

Cheers and Happy Holidays to ALL you meteorite Folks out there.

Hi John and List,

I never thought to cross-reference these with the Met Bull. Good
detective work there. The numbers just don't add up. Something is
suspect there - or "sus" as the kids say now. LOL.

Occasionally you'll see these pawn brokers or antique/collectible
dealers offer a meteorite or two, but you don't often see an entire
collection of larger and more interesting pieces from a seller like
this. Meteorites clearly aren't their speciality, so the pawn shop is
just probably passing along whatever info came with the specimens when
they received them.

What strikes me is (you alluded to the same) is that a collection of
this size and quality is wasted on a pawn shop. Who takes a collection
like that to the corner pawn shop? The seller could have done a lot
better selling it first-hand to collectors and not going through a
pawn broker that is going to lowball you on the sale. I'd think that
any collector who built a collection like that would be savvier than
walking into a pawn shop and plopping them on the counter for a quick
sale.

But, who knows? Somebody might have needed money fast for legit
reason. Or, maybe they are stolen. Or maybe the story is stranger than
that. Just seeing all of those meteorites for sale by a pawn shop made
me curious. I've been watching them for a couple of weeks now, and
more specimens keep being offered.

Buyer beware.

Best regards,

MikeG

Main mass of 46.5g and the bulletin says the type specimen weighs 11.2g .
The tkw is listed as 56.12 This is a physical impossibility since the
Pawn
Shop shows a tkw of 57.62, more than the Meteoritical Bulletin shows

and that is not accounting for cutting loss and the 2 photographed

[meteorite-list] AD-REVISED AD: Entire Meteorite Collection $6000

2018-06-07 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Hi Meteorite Friends Don Merchant here again. I have recently conversed with
a few World Renowned Meteorite Dealer Friends about selling my Meteorite
Collection. As some may know and some may not, I have been out of the
Meteorite Collecting and its Markets for some time now due to health
reasons. With this said I have to in all fairness revise the sale amount of
my collection. It needs to go! I have decide to sell the entire collection
for $6000 which is a fair price based on Markets. Far less than what I put
into it, but fair none the less. So if anyone is interested please contact
me off List and forgive me of not keeping up with the Markets. Below is all
the info of my Meteorite Collection as stated in my previous email post:

I have been Buying, Selling and Collecting
Meteorites for almost 20 years. It is with a heavy heart that the time has
come to sell my entire meteorite collection. METEORITES ONLY. Cabinets NOT
included.

I have acquired over 220+ different specimens from around the world. Many
specimens

purchased from the top most world renowned Dealers/Collectors such as Mike
Farmer, Michael Cottingham, Sergey Vasiliev, Moritz Karl, Rob Elliott, Dean
Bessy, John Schooler, The Hupe Brothers, Norbert Classen, Steve Arnold
(Meteorite Men) to name a few! This is a much diversified collection that
was acquired over 20 years!

These meteorite specimens vary in size and weight from micro to macro size.
Many are of the most historical and
scientific significance. Many are the rarest of the rare and exceedingly
difficult to acquire now days. Much thought was put into each purchased
meteorite. Some of these specimens are fragments, some are slices, and some
are part slices.

A few are whole stones, and a few are oriented. 2 have natural holes in
them, some have crust, and others are etched. All of them have an
interesting story to tell.

I have been a long time Member of the IMCA (International Meteorite
Collectors Association) Member #0960 and long time Member of the Meteorite
Central List/Forum

Due to time constraints and health reasons I am not interested in selling
these pieces one at a time. I just do not have the stamina or the time for
that. I am looking to sell the entire collection as a whole, thus the price
reflects and compensates for someone who does.

I have painstakingly, meticulously and thoroughly organized all the
paperwork, cases and specimen information for each piece. All have
Provenance's, be it ID Cards (the majority) from the previous
Dealer/Owner. A few will have a PayPal or EBay receipt/paperwork, as well as
my own ID Cards. For a Buyer if purchased, these pieces are ready to sell
instantly as I have done all the work!

As a bonus (since I will no longer need it and well worth over a $500
value), this collection will come with a Rolodex that has
Information/History Cards professionally typed. The Rolodex
Information/History Cards covers about 80% of all the specimens, with a few
handwritten included. I just was never able to complete 100% of the
Information/History Cards due to time constraints and health reasons. Still
very

nice to have, and I am just throwing it in the sale.

Link for Rolodex pictures:
http://www.ctreasurescwonders.com/rolodex.html?r=20180529130829

I prefer a United States Buyer as my first choice. A U.S. Buyer will have
first preference over an International Buyer.

I will entertain an International Buyer under strict conditions and at my
discretion.
International Buyer MUST be of good standing and a World Renowned Reputation
Dealer and or
Collector in the meteorite Community and can back that reputation up! My
reluctance selling
Internationally is not to be taken personal. It is due to the fact that once
the collection is sent out, tracking and Custom Handling becomes
virtually difficult to deal with and heavy risks for such an expensive
transaction. I have
a hard time trusting certain Country Customs. I am sure many of you
understand what I am talking about.

With that stated. I am asking $6000.00 USD. It includes Free 1 Day
shipping Registered Signature Required with tracking and insured Paid by me
to any U.S. Buyer in the United States. This Collection will be well packed,
and secured for its journey.

Interested International Buyers will have to contact me to work out details
on shipping if I consider a Sale/Offer..

I accept a Bank Cashiers Check Only. However.I will entertain payment via
PayPal. However PayPal takes 3% from the amount. I will split the PayPal Fee
so the Buyer will have to pay 1.5% to the negotiated price.

PLEASE, ONLY SERIOUS BUYERS contact me off list.

At that point I will pass along my phone # so you can speak with me if you
choose or have further questions..
I will also send via your email an entire list in alphabetical order on
Microsoft Word a list

Holy Smokes! They wiped you out! So sorry to hear this Eduardo. How does
something like this happen? It seems every year I hear about someone at the
Tucson whose items get stolen. Are there not paid security during this event
day and night? Are there not security cameras in the buildings/rooms/parking
lots? This is such a shame.

Holy Cow Adam...you're right! Heck I was moaning and whimpering when it was
$16.95. I had to now check for myself for Priority small flat rate box. I can't
believe it!! I have always preferred Priority Mail. Now to save costs you have
to go first class mail. I don't like it. Seems more of a chance for someone to
say they never received the item. Now your out the item and if they paid via
PayPal your double screwed and out that or PayPal blocks your account from you
using it until refund is made. Sorry Folks did not mean to hijack the post but
wow you aren't kidding USPS raised their prices!!
Cheers

The rates went up again. It now costs $34.00 to send a USPS Flat Rate Box
international. I remember when it costs $2.80 to send a USPS Flat Rate Box
domestically just a few years ago. Like any thing the Federal Government
touches, you count on drastic price increases with less efficiency.

You could be on to something here Tom! Remember the movie "Joe Dirt" and his

2015-12-28 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Not sure if this counts but I started into the hobby of astronomy when I was
very young. At 13 years of age I went to the Strasenburg Planetarium here in
Rochester, NY. While I was there I bought a small book called "A Comet
Strikes the Earth" by Harvey Ninniger in the gift shop. On that book was a
glued a small piece of meteorite from the outside rim of the Barringer
crater. I still have that book and the meteorite. I will go out on a limb
and say then that I started collecting meteorites in 1973!

Jim and I were active before this but '95 & '96 is when the Internet
started taking off and the first meteorite websites were born. I think
Eric Twelker was the first with The Meteorite Marketplace.

Did anyone else start collecting in '96. If not then... when? and why?
Many dealers and collectors were active before '96 and many more after.

In August 1996 I read on the front page of the local NC (Greensboro
Daily News) newspaper that NASA had found a possible life form in a
Martian meteorite found in Antarctica - Allan Hills 84001. This was
announcing there was life elsewhere in the Universe.

I figured people would want meteorites. I was already selling gems and
minerals at shows and had seen meteorites for sale in Tucson and
Denver. I had meteorites before the end of the year. The fist ones
were mailed from a dealer in Mexico - Tolucas, then Gibeon from the
S.African dealers Karl and Clive. Next was Esquel from Bob Haag. I
nearly sold out the first show I offered meteorites.

It was ALH 84001 that started it for me. How about the rest of you?

See you in Tucson.

coins since they are highly desired with Meteorite Coin Collectors and Coin
Dealers. They are the 2004 Liberia NWA 267 Coin and the Fly Me to the Moon
Coin. Believe it or not they are fair priced compared to other Sellers
selling either of these coins. As you know the Liberia 2004 NWA 267 coin

[meteorite-list] Does anyone buy entire meteorite colletions?

2015-06-28 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Just curious List...I have seen a few web sites of Dealers stating that they
buy meteorite and or meteorite collections. I guess my question is do they
really buy entire meteorite collections? I have conferred with a few Dealers
a few years back who have posted on their web sites that they do, but when
asked, they then say that they don't! Maybe that statement should be removed
from their web site, I guess.

*
I know that before the end of this year 2015, I will be selling my entire
meteorite collection (meteorites only), then later I will be selling all my
meteorite coins, stamps, postcards and other meteorite related items. I get
the feeling that this will be more difficult then I anticipated even though
my collection has been meticulously documented and preserved.

*
With that said has anyone bought or sold entire meteorite collections and if
so are there any hints, tips and or advice that can be recommended?

I have bought many collections. There is no right or wrong answer. Markets
change, prices rise or fall. Send me a list.
I've offered to buy back endless meteorites for even 10 times what I sold
them for. Of course that doesn't apply to most things but some it sure
does.

[meteorite-list] AD: ALL-YOU-NEED 8 inch Complete Hi-Tech Diamond

2014-12-01 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list

Hi List and Happy Holidays.
*
This is for U.S.Buyers ONLY.
*
I have up for sale an ALL-YOU-NEED 8 inch Complete Hi-Tech Diamond
Horizontal Lap Machine. I had purchased this some time ago from Kingsley
North with the intention of using it. That never transpired. This is a brand
spanking new never been used and been just sitting around like a paper
weight. It is Complete and runs perfect. I decided it's time to unload it to
someone who will use it! This sells for over $500+ I will take the loss and
I am selling it for $375 with FREE SHIPPING any where in the U.S. If it does
not sell by Friday December 5th, 2014 I will put it up on eBay as a Buy It
Now but at a higher price. I thought I would allow the List first chance
before eBay. Here is a link to a page on my Website which has pictures and
more information and how to contact me if interested. Thank you for your
time and have a safe and Happy Holidays.

[meteorite-list] Off subject--Halloween Special

2014-10-31 Thread Don Merchant via Meteorite-list
Hi List. Sorry if this is off Subject...As many as you may know or not, one
of my hobbies is the study of the haunted paranormal. I had the fortunate
opportunity to study for about 5 years one of the most haunted places in the
United States called Rolling Hills...a former insane asylum! During this
time I created a CD on the history and findings of Rolling Hills, much like
a virtual tour. Below is the Link to my Website

*
Anyways...since today is Halloween, and Happy Halloween by the way, I
thought I would send out a Halloween Treat to the List for those who can
find some time today/tonight to check out the Video and listen to the CD
virtual tour. Best to listen to the CD with headphones to get the best
affects but not necessary. Your welcome to share it with family and friends
to give a scare!

Hi Zsolt. Reason I ask is that I know that trying to find some real actual
Hoba cut from the meteorite is very hard to acquire and very very
expensive. Even today the shale alone is getting difficult to acquire. I

Very interesting thing, beceause when I have cutted it it looks like me

Really was some spot, area of the surface in brown but was metal-gray area

My bigger piece has content two polished sides and this also has got

Do you think that there is a 25-30 mm thick shale? Not too wider for the

Hi Folks,

I have seen shale or oxide fragments that had unoxidized metal inside
them when cut. From the outside, the pieces resembled shale, but the
interior was unoxidized iron or it had a core area with shiny metal
in it.

So, given such a specimen, is it still considered shale or oxide
if there is unoxidized metal inside it? What litmus test is used to
determine this? If the metal can be etched, is it considered iron
and not shale? If so, a way to solve the mystery is to etch the
shiny portion and see if it yields a widmanstatten pattern.

Best regards,

MikeG

I would guess that Zsolt, being very new at this, did not notice or did

[meteorite-list] Halloween Special

2013-10-25 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List. I know this is off subject and I sincerely apologize as I do not do
this too often. Anywaysas many of you know or do not know, one of my
hobbies besides meteorites and astronomy is the study of the haunted
paranormal. I created a page only accessible by the link I will post below.
I call it my Halloween Special page. I investigated and researched Rolling
Hills for over 5 years which is one of the most haunted places in the United
States. I basically lived there as I also was the tour guide for the public
tours! I specialize in EVP which is short for electronic voice phenomenon.
Basically the recordings of voices of those that have passed on. During my
research I created a CD called Voices Within Rolling Hills 2 The Truth
Revealed.

*
Voices Within Rolling Hills 2 The Truth Revealed is very much different and
is somewhat created as a Virtual Tour, so listeners can feel as if they are
on the property and in the building with me as I narrate the CD. It covers
the in depth truth of what truly happened in the building and on the
property over the many decades that which contributed to the incredible
hauntings that exist there.

*
With that said...I have sold hundreds of this CD to paranormal enthusiasts
around the country but decided for the very first time to publicly post a
link that anyone can have a little Halloween Fun and entertainment by
watching a short video created by my former paranormal team RHGHS (Rolling
Hills Ghost Hunting Society).

*
Below the Video is My CD Voices Within Rolling Hills 2 The Truth Revealed
downloaded in its entirety for anyone to listen to. The link will be working
until the day after Halloween. I am not selling nor promoting anything. I am
just sharing years of study and work in the paranormal as a tribute to
Halloween and to entertain those who have some free time and want to get
into the Halloween spirit, no pun intended!.

*
You are all welcomed to check it out and share the link with your friends,
and family and have some fun free entertainment while acquiring an education
about the hidden world of the paranormal. This stuff is real be warned!

*
Here is the link.

[meteorite-list] Guesstimate on number of meteorite collectors.

2013-05-14 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List. Some thoughts and questions to ponder. To me it seems like there is
an endless number of Meteorite Dealers, Wannabee Meteorite Dealers, Part
Time Sellers, Full time Sellers, One hit wonder Sellers, Mix of meteorite
and Jewelry Sellers etc. All one has to do is just go on eBay to get a
partial idea of this fiasco, let alone the many websites you come across
when searching blindly on the internet involving meteorites. It seems
everyone including my great grandmother is selling meteorites! I also know
that meteorite collecting is confined to a very small group/percentage of
people world wide as compared to other hobbies. Does anyone have any idea of
how many hard core Collectors there are in the world at one time? I am not
talking about the 1 time Buyer of a meteorite either. I see some Dealers
selling the same material every week for years! I mean it sells, but to
who!! The same type specimen every single week for years, I mean every
Collector on Earth should have a piece of it by now, and yet someone buys
another piece the following week! What are Collectors doing, double and
tripling up on the specimens! I don't get it. AnywaysI just don't see
how anyone can make a full time living Selling meteorites with such
completion out there these days and the fraud that takes place. My pet
peeves are those that sell without providing at least an ID Card or some
kind of provenance...at least something to back the specimen. That irks me
to no end! I have solved that issue long, long ago ...I don't buy from you,
period. How the heck can I resell that specimen without some form of
legitimacy. So for those of you who still continue to sell without ID Cards
or Provenance, lets get your crap in order. Another thing I noticed is that
(especially) on eBay that week after week after week specimens like Lunars,
Martians, or historical specimens (well known and famous specimens) that
which have been sold or known for years, still get high prices for the
auction. You mean that after all these years there are still Collectors that
do not have a piece of say NWA 482 or DaG 476! Once it is put up on eBay
somebody buys it. Where on Earth do these people work that they continue to
buy and buy and buy meteorites! I guess I just don't understand who is
always buying these specimens with such a bad global economy and a limited
elite group of Collectors. Where the heck do you get your money from! Maybe
inheritance? Lottery Money? Can't be from hard earned money! Just sounding
off is all to those who want to listen/read. I mean some people go to these
shows like Ensisheim or Tucson and spend tens of thousands of dollars or
more on specimens! What!! Are you serious! I know for a fact that less then
1/10th of 1% of people become millionaires starting out with nothing. The
rest were either lucky or money was handed to them by Mom and Dad or Mom and
Dad's business was given to them. I just don't get it. I have a very high
paying job and no one ever gave me a penny and I barely make ends meet, let
alone find money to purchase meteorites. This is a mystery that needs to be
on the History Channel!

2013-05-06 Thread Don Merchant
Hi all. Mike when you went there (Chelyabinsk) did you actually search for
specimens or did you just purchase from people that already had collected
them? Where did all your specimens go? As a regular Buyer from you, was kind
of waiting for your specimens to be offered up for sale but must of missed
them.

Thanks

Yes, months of melting snow and rains tend to oxidize meteorites.
Why do you think I rushed over there in the snow and got all I could?
The pre-melt material is exquisite.
The newly found is still quite nice and some are nearly flawless still,
but many show mild to moderate oxidation.

Hi List. Just curious and was pondering a question. This in particular to
well known/better known Dealers and regular Sellers of meteorites. It
seems over the last month an increase in Dealers and Sellers (known, or at
least more familiar by names) are selling specimens of Chelyabinsk on eBay
and the List and their Websites. I have noticed a lower price per gram
then what has been seen at least on eBay in previous months. Maybe this
price change is to draw business away from the masses of people that were
buying on eBay due to the media attention of the Chelyabinsk event. Makes
business sense. Anyways...my question is... Did the delay of acquiring
Chelyabinsk specimens so late, compared to the many Russians that were
selling Chelyabinsk fresh specimens with in days of the fall on eBay, hurt
sales or the price per gram for those Dealers and Sellers who are just
advertising now? Seems the early sales by the Russians took in quite a bit
of cash and diluted the market a bit from February until recently when
familiar Dealers/Sellers started posting their Chelyabinsk sales. Just
curious.Any thoughts?

If any of you can get on eBay and search the name meteorgort then check
meteorgort feedback until you see your eBay name and feedback left. Maybe
a PayPal transaction may have this person's real name. He/She has done
nothing wrong, I just need this person's real name not the eBay name for my

Wouldn't it of progressively obtained more weight as it came closer to the

Good old empty precision on a number converted from metric units.
11,000 metric tons = 24250848.8 lbs. The humorous thing is that
I seriously doubt the original mass is known to better than a
factor of 3, so none of the digits are significant. --Rob

[meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk meteorite sales--Where are the Hunters!

2013-04-06 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List. I guess I am surprised here with the Chelyabinsk event. It has to
be one of the most historical events in many decades. For sure one of the
most media covered meteorite events! My confusion surrounds the fact that
less meteorite events (still extraordinary but less covered then the
Chelyabinsk event) like Carancas, Park Forest, etc. that these events were
stormed with famous meteorite Hunters running or flying out to find some
treasures to keep and sell.. Where are these same Hunters/ Dealers with the
Chelyabinsk event!!? The Mike Farmers, the Michael Cottingham's, the Steve
Arnold's, the Geoffrey Notkin's etc! All REAL QUIET. Isn't this one of the
greatest events in history with what appears to be many stones all over the
strewnfield. Yet hardly a well know Hunter to count on for purchasing
specimens. What is there no money to make on this event to cover the cost of
flying to Russia? Collectors have to rely on taking a risk with little or no
name Sellers. Where or what happened to the American Dealers and Sellers
with this meteorite event? I mean its been almost 2 months since the fall.
Is something going on as a collector I/We should know about? I had heard of
2 reputable Hunters stating they were going to Russia, but total silence! Am
I the only one who is confused on this whole Chelyabinsk event with many top
well known Dealer/Seller/Hunter's?

Re: [meteorite-list] Chelyabinsk purchase

2013-04-05 Thread Don Merchant
Hi Michael. I am sorry to hear this but be patient. I purchased my meteorite
on March 24 and received it April 2, coming from Latvia. I was a bit worried
as well, but researched this Seller before bidding. Boy did he surprise me!
Not only was shipping fast (about 10 days) but it was packed to withstand
entry through the Earth's atmosphere. Not only that I had to sign for it and
it came in a very nice white square Gem case with a glass front! My shipping
cost was only $8! Anyways here is a link to my Gallery of Meteorites
Collection so you can go to the C's and you can see the case and meteorite
Chelyabinsk I purchased. Its only a 1.15 gm whole stone 100% crust, but its
a beauty. Of course first thing I did when I received it was place it to a
neodymium magnet of which it took to. Be patient as I have had to wait as
much as 30 days on some of my collection. I do agree its getting a bit long
but it seems when I get edgy about it as I am sure you are, that all of a
sudden it arrives in the mail a day or 2 later. Here is the link to my
Gallery of Meteorites as I just added the Chelyabinsk specimen the other
day. Let me know Michael when it arrives.

I was curious how long it took for some of you to receive your meteorites

has been a little more than three weeks, could someone more experienced in

Hi Michael. I am sorry to hear this but be patient. I purchased my
meteorite on March 24 and received it April 2, coming from Latvia. I was a
bit worried as well, but researched this Seller before bidding. Boy did he
surprise me! Not only was shipping fast (about 10 days) but it was packed
to withstand entry through the Earth's atmosphere. Not only that I had to
sign for it and it came in a very nice white square Gem case with a glass
front! My shipping cost was only $8! Anyways here is a link to my Gallery
of Meteorites Collection so you can go to the C's and you can see the
case and meteorite Chelyabinsk I purchased. Its only a 1.15 gm whole stone
100% crust, but its a beauty. Of course first thing I did when I received
it was place it to a neodymium magnet of which it took to. Be patient as I
have had to wait as much as 30 days on some of my collection. I do agree
its getting a bit long but it seems when I get edgy about it as I am sure
you are, that all of a sudden it arrives in the mail a day or 2 later.
Here is the link to my Gallery of Meteorites as I just added the
Chelyabinsk specimen the other day. Let me know Michael when it arrives.

Hello list,

I was curious how long it took for some of you to receive your meteorites
from Russia? The seller I purchased mine from stated that he sent it to
me on March 11, 2013, I have yet to receive it. I want to be prudent and
seek council from you before I make the decision to put a claim into
PayPal. It has been a little more than three weeks, could someone more
experienced in shipping to and from Russia please advise if I am correct
in being a little concerned or should I give it a few more weeks. I have
questioned my seller to this and have not received a satisfactory
response. Yes I know the danger of dealing with someone who is a new
seller, however since I used PayPal I felt assured that if it did not
work out I would be able to recoup my funds. Any advice would be greatly
appreciated.

Warm regards,

Michael Brooks

The current price has dropped from over $400.00/gram to about $30.00/gram
according to the 417 specimens that have already been sold on eBay. Judging
from other recent falls, they should be selling for about $3.80 to $5.00
gram in a few months and there will be over 50 dealers offering it and
thousands of pieces on the market like SA. At this price, they will still be
twice as expensive as SA or a recent Moroccan fall.

Hi Arnold. Why do you say you do not see the prices coming down anytime
soon? There overpriced right now and there is plenty and plenty more that
will be found. Its an ordinary chondrite no less! Those that can't wait a

block to have one. Curious to know what you paid for your piece! All I can
say is, and no offence to anyone out there, is please do not sell your piece
of Chelyabinsk. Keep it locked away in your collection as I do not want it
in mine. Again I will wait until the craze calms down and or another Fall

I will wait when I truly know the Dealer and above all else PROOF that what

Wow that was fast! Seeing it is an ordinary chondrille type LL of course
that type being the least abundant for ordinary chondrites, and it looks as
if there is quite a bit of this meteorite being found and more that will be

drastically. My guess should be no more then $15- $25 a gram with fusion

would contact a lawyer and make UPS pay for their mistake/error. I am sure
you had insurance for the contents of the crate!

Carl,

please send us the list of these people, witnesses are always welcome.

Wow, he told you that he has half of our material ? thank you for your
testimony.

Anybody has pictures of that exposed collection ?

If you had more than your house value as retainer you would be very
cooperative beleive us,

we even had to give some Museum labels .

Past debt obligations ? please show any paperwork.

If he is caught there and has nothing to see why he doesn't answer us
nor write us that he's innocent ?

and as for the delay, 12 days for the crate to come back to France, the
investigations and been able to have

enough strong written evidences and witnesses takes time you know.

This is one of the biggest robbery in the meteorites history, we are the
victims and you try to tell us that we

shouldn't be on the list ?

Don't worry, that should be resolved strongly.

List,
This is very confusing. The Tucson show ended nearly a month ago on Feb.
18th. Why the long wait to make claims
Anyone at the show already saw much of this material being sold by Sean
and he and Bruno were very friendly with each other at the time. I saw
them meeting and discussing identification and pricing of this material.
Bruno had half or this material for sale and Sean had the other half for
sale. In other words it was explained to me that they had made a deal in
exchange for past debt obligations Bruno had with Sean's partner. Sean
explained this to anyone interested . I could give you a list of people
Sean told this to. He had made a legitimate deal with Bruno.
This seems like somebody is doing dirty laundry in public and has no
business on this list. At least not until resolved. There is always two
sides to every story. Sean may be caught in the middle here but, I know
him to be an honest man.

 Dear list Members,

it is with consternation that we annouce you that we have been
victims of extortion at the beginning of the Tucson show
and finaly totaly robbed at the end of the Tucson show.

Fortunatly the criminals have been iddentified and one have admited

 not
disclose their names at that time nor the circumstances, we can just
 tell

you that two are Americans and one is Morrocan.

We and the Police have enough evidences and witnesses, that will lead

We offered them to give back the material and we would not press
 charges,

but it seems that they are not cooperating.
The French Police will involve FBI and INTERPOL in the next days as
 they

don't return our inventory intact and at no cost NOW.

[meteorite-list] If this can happen so can an asteroid hitting the Earth

2013-03-10 Thread Don Merchant
Hi List. Just wanted to post a thought. Here is a link of which a piece of
Chinese space debris from 2007 hit a Russian satellite causing it to be
knocked out of orbit and direction thus rendering it useless. The point
being with all that space and distance between objects, who would of thought
that possible. Trust me not NASA, anything can happen at anytime. When NASA
says that an approaching asteroid will miss the Earth...maybe, but what
happens if a smaller object that NASA does not or can not see hits that
asteroid the next day or next hour and changes its orbit, now its heading
straight at Earth. Did NASA know about the Chelyabinsk asteroid...no they
did not until it hit. What about the Carancas meteorite event in Peru
2007...no they did not. There are literally hundreds of thousands of these
asteroids that are about 1/2 mile wide and smaller that can take out a large
city at any time. I have noticed over the past 2 years an incredible
increase of observed bolides, daylight fireballs, and actual meteorite hits
on Earth. This increase is being caused by something that has affected the
Solar System. The planets besides Earth, such as Mars, Jupiter, Saturn,
Neptune are showing increased changes never before seen. There are also an
increase in more comets entering our solar system as well. AnywaysI
believe that a Tunguska event x2 is very well in our near future, maybe even
this year, and NASA will have totally missed itthat of course until it
happens!

[meteorite-list] To get or not to get...that is the question!

2013-03-09 Thread Don Merchant
Well I see a bunch of List Members are getting anxious and venturing the
unknown and taking risks and purchasing these eBay listed Chelyabinsk
meteorites. Some how I feel still reluctant to do that especially when the
price per gram has not been set based on these being mostly auction style
auctions and very few Buy it Nows, but mainly because I do not recognize any
of the Seller names! A part of me wants to but my conscience keeps stopping
me. Anyways my question is, has anyone dealt with a world renown Dealer that
can be trusted that which who has any Chelyabinsk meteorites available and
that will come with a COA or some kind of convincing paperwork? I really
don't need a fake Chelyabinsk meteorite in my collection, nor do I want to
purchase a Chelyabinsk meteorite from someone I know who bought it from
someone they don't know. Does anyone out there feel my pain? I am only
looking for a gram or 2 but I am very, very cautious at this stage of
parting with my $. I was burned once many years ago and said it would never
happen again. I am sure I am not alone on this.

[meteorite-list] Is this oriented?

Hi List. Can someone look at this picture and tell me if it is oriented? It
is a 6.58 gm. whole stone of Millbillillie with 100% crust with flow lines.
Top of meteorite is up, and conical tapering to a wide bottom. I bought this

success making contact with the Dealer. I could take it out of the case and
take more pics but I am being lazy (shame on me) thus using a picture I

no way, tons of meteorites have flow lines, it is natural for anything
falling and melting to have a flow line. That does not denote stable flight.
If you are trying to sell me something oriented, I need to see shape, lines,
rollover lipping, etc.
Combined, those things can make nice orientation. But pretty much every
Millbillillie has flow lines, many are oriented, but I saw no signs of
orientation on that piece.

I wouldn't describe it as oriented, but that word is in the eye of
the beholder I guess.

To me, Lafayette is the poster child for orientation and flowlines.

I guess you could say this - if you have to ask, it's not. ;)

Best regards,

PS - it's a very nice specimen, oriented or not. :)

2013-03-04 Thread Don Merchant
Thank you List to all who expressed their opinions on this is it oriented
or not visual examination topic. I did get a variety of yes and no's, and
each answer had excellent reasons for or against. My personal opinion from
the get go was that it was not oriented, but I still wanted to investigate
the possibility that the specimen could be oriented by tapping into the
minds of those of you who are much more experienced then me in the world of
meteorites and the visual signs to look for that help qualify a specimen as
oriented, plus I wanted to be careful how I label this meteorite in my
collection. Again thank you very much for all your opinions.

Hi Don/list,

I have a few of these booklets in different colours and i asked the
question to Mike Jensen a while ago. Below is his reply:

Those are available in several different colors. I seem to find the
bright orange? color the most. But I have seen a more red cover and
one closer to the 1969 yellow? color as well. So yes they are
produced in several different colors. I always thought the blue ones
were the rarest color but I have actually seen several of them
recently. I also must point out I have seen so few of them over the
years that my opinions are based on a very small population so I could
easily be wrong when I state rarest...most...fewest...etc.
Something I find curious is only the 42 seems to have been produced in
several different colors. I do have one later edition that has a very
light yellow cover but every other book I have seen is the 69 yellow
cover

So it appears that the 1969 edition has the yellow cover and you may
be able to date them according to the colour of the cover. Nice little
booklets :-)

Cheers

Martin

[meteorite-list] ALTERNATIVE dealing with eBay Fraud! JASON, be carefull what you say about my meteorites on the Meteorite List, I am warning you...

2013-03-02 Thread Don Merchant
Very good advice Mike. If I may add...to all of you who do sell on eBay and
are tired of paying fees, and receiving unjust negative feedback from
constipated Buyers or dealing with fraud and wanna be Dealers/Sellers, may I
suggest an alternative. Please understand I realize eBay covers a world wide
distance of people, but and I mean BUT, don't many here on the Meteorite
List anyways adverstise that they have items posted on eBay? Yes they do,
and a large amount of Buyers are from this List who read the posted
advertisment and then go to eBay to view these Auctions. Some even sell
specimens just by posting on this List without eBay such as Chicago Steve
Arnold and several other Sellers, thus saving costs. Very smart people! Yes
I understand that an Auction can allow an unlimited price, but as avid and
experienced meteorite collectors, we know what we can afford and we know
roughly what the market value is give or take for most specimens.

*
Here is an option which I have as well as many other people, for these
reasons took. You do not need to be a rocket scientist or computer guru to
do this. It is simple and well explained. Most importantly it is free. Yes I
said it is FREE. Build your self a small Website. Not only does it make you
look legit and professional, it seperates you from those frauds that hide
behind eBay. You then when you have meteorite specimens to sell, do as you
always have by advertising them on the List with a link to your site. Yes
there will be a set price and yes you can still use PayPal to have Buyers
purchase your meteorites, but Bam...no eBay fees, no negative feedback no
bull crap!

*
Here you can build a 3 page limit Website for free very easily. At least
click the link and check it out. Options are there for even more Website
options. My Website was created entiely by myself this way! Over 2.5 million
people use this Site for their home and professional business by building
their own Website. Just a thought and option. Heck if we can get the whole
List to do this we might be able to elliminate most of the fraud, and get
more bang for the buck to purchase meteorites. I know we will never
elliminate 100% of the frauds, but those who are serious about meteorites
can take it a step further by building a Website to sell their meteorites,
since many fraudulant people will find it to time consuming thus taking the
easy route via eBay. Now please don't get me wrong, we know not all eBay
Sellers and Dealers are frauds using eBay to sell their meteorites. But with
a Website you then can not hide behind your eBay name or behind eBay itself.
Check the Link out. I would not steer any of you wrong. Here is the Link:

So, before you knock them please look at the real cause of the

1) It all started when a certain Meteorite Man was (wrongly) jailed

1) We do have NYT articles that put out bad information. {made the

2) Whether it's true or not The Egyptian officials themselves say it is
illegal to export their meteorites. {made the press}
3) Whether it's true or not We also have India officials saying it is
illegal to export it's meteorites. {made the press}
4) We also have incidents where people admit to being tried , convicted
and imprisoned for illegal mining of meteorites. And then further
publicize it on the local news. {made the press}
5) And of coarse there are all of the news stories about the value of
meteorites. {made the press}
6). Too many more stories to list here but, the point is that the
situation this field is in today cannot be blamed on any one single

thousands of stones will be recovered. The price on black beauty is
insane, already dropping and I have Moroccans begging me to buy it. This
Russian fall has excited the world, my sales are surging because of

But one problem, the Russian fall is likely going to be relatively

cheap, I am sure hundreds of kilos will be found and the price will
likely be low. For $500 people will be able to buy one or many stones.
$500 in black beauty gets you a speck hardly identifiable as a
meteorite.

Both are very interesting meteorites, scientifically the Mars is more

interesting but dynamically the Russian fall is history-book material.

No comparison in my opinion:)

Completely agree, my partners as I bought over a million dollars in
Tissint in less than a month. Great meteorite, great price. There are no
large pieces on the market today. That tells me it was too cheap. I am

they would have avoided a lot of the turmoil that centers around falls.
Compound the problem with more and more supply coming onto the Moroccan

A few fortunate and smart major collectors put out the money and took

Call it anything you want, a nuclear-bomb blast magnitude common

This is what makes meteorite collecting interesting. Some prefer
falls and some prefer rare types. I am saying that historically,
there is way more bang for the buck in a planetary piece than a fall
unless it is a planetary fall. The last Martian fall maintains around
40% of the initial offering price whereas the last several chondrite
falls only maintains about 10-20% of their initial offer price. For
the most part, unless some dealer becomes desperate and charges way
too much on his credit card, Planetary finds have the best record for
maintaining price in the long run.

With over a dozen falls a year, Ordinary Chondrite falls are
literately a dime a dozen these days, excuse the pun. You can
purchase very old witnessed falls at a bargain by comparison to more
recent falls with asking prices much higher. I would prefer very old
falls for investment purposes.

I like planetary pieces above all else and to me, they will always be
king.

Sorry Adam, but this fall has been seen in every country and every tv
in the world. I would not expect it to be expensive because for sure
thousands of stones will be recovered. The price on black beauty is
insane, already dropping and I have Moroccans begging me to buy it.
This Russian fall has excited the world, my sales are surging because
of interest.
I will take a bet with you, this Russian meteorite will fill every
collection in the world and Black beauty will be owned by very few
people.

I know where I am going to put my money.

2013-02-16 Thread Don Merchant
I haven't heard officially if anything of this meteorite was ever recovered.
Wondering if this meteorite completely evaporated during its explosive entry
much like the Tunguska event. Divers did check the lake and found nothing
but were they scientist divers, Govt. assigned divers, or ametauer divers
not knowing how and what to look for. For such a destructive and media
covered event nothing I heard has been officially found but I could be wrong

Hello everyone -

I got to watch the Russian videos before all the pop tunes and colorful
Russian expressions were removed. The sanitized compilations are simply
not as good. I would have preferred subtitles being added to them instead.

One of the interesting things is that releases of binding forces, the
bollides, or implosions have previously been estimated to occur around 5
kilometers in altitude. If I am viewing the entry contrail in this case
correctly, it looks like this bollide went off around 8 kilometers in
altitude, indicating a pretty friable small impactor.

Given the slow velocities of the shattered glass pieces, what reached the
ground was pretty small. You can be sure that after much delicate dancing,
data will come out and analyzed by the specialists.

In the meantime, infra-red spread estimates from the public videos may end
up providing a first order estimate as to the magnitude of the bollide.

Another interesting thing is that it has generally been assumed that
almost all the momentum was converted into energy in the bollide, but in
this case we can see contrails going off after the main bollide event.

Xinhuanet is reporting Russian online sales:
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/world/2013-02/16/c_124351175.htm

For you folks out there in the field, its -7, so be nice to people; you
might need their help to stay alive. This area has high tech industries,
so don't try to pull any stupid bs stunts either. Remember, the reputation
of all meteorite hunters depend on everyone else's actions, so please
don't p*ss in the soup.

In closing, if this was a CC, and if larger pieces did continue onward,
then it has implications for searching for fragments from other CC
bollides, such as Tunguska.

Finally, I saw one video where a very young lady was having a small piece
of glass removed from her cheek; if she done not get at least a crumb of
this one, shame on all of you.

Good hunting, all
E.P.
