My two bob's worth. Use what is correct in your own nation or culture or the way that you have been instructed in language. The rest of us will understand what may seem confusing on its own from the the context that it is used in. I use colour and not color, I use Aluminium and not Aluminum, I use orientated and not oriented. If you feel uneasy about a word, choose another, such as, aligned, instead. Some would have the entire language become phonetic or SMS'ed. Some people are not native speakers of English but do a lot better at English, than I would in their language. As long as the message gets across and you do the best that you can. I would probably use the word 'nacre' to describe the lustre of a pearl, 'orient' is a new one on me. See, I am still learning, as, no doubt we all are. I love this list for that. A quote that I proudly invented, I think. Woe, shall be I the day that I stop learning, for that shall also be the day that I die. [meteorite-list] Oriented vs orientated with regard to meteorites
Hello List, Originally, orientated was only used to indicate that something inside a meteorite was arranged or aligned in a certain way: a preferred direction in a crystal lattice, in the matrix of a chondrite or in the matrix of an iron meteorite, etc. Examples: Borkut (L5) - elliptical chondrules are orientated. Canyon City (IIIAB) - The individual 50-100 µ wide alpha-grains of the fields are differently orientated, as is evidenced by the various orientations of the epsilon-structure in them. DaG 995 (AEUC) - plagioclase contains small crystallographically orientated inclusions of augite, pigeonite and silica. A. Fujimura et al. (1983) Preferred orientation of phyllosilicate (001) in matrix of Murchison meteorite and possible mechanisms of generating the orientated texture in chondrites (Earth Plan.Sci.Lett. 66, 25-32). But over time, especially since the 1980s, orientated also came to be used to denote flight-oriented. Examples: El Carmen (H6) - A single, orientated mass weighing 629 g was found. Lone Tree (H4) - An orientated, weathered mass of 20.676 kg was ploughed up. Mount Margaret (L5) - A single, flight orientated stone was found. Summerfield (L5) - A single orientated stone of 6.2 kg was found. Waka (H6) - A single, orientated mass weighing 11.875 kg was found. Hello List, Thanks for all the replies. I think I may have the answer. I think it depends on whether or not you are using the word as an adjective, noun, or verb. See these examples: 1. It is an oriented meteorite. 2. It exhibits orientation. 3. As it was falling, one side was orientated toward the ground. So, in most cases that we would see here on the list or on eBay describing a meteorite with obvious front and back sides, it seems the correct term would be oriented, as it would most likely be being used as an adjective. May be one hint: I found orientated only used in the sense of being focused (e.g. market-orientated, customer-orientated, also, market-oriented, customer-oriented), but I could not find orientated in the sense of something being physically aligned (e.g. there is a term grain-oriented electrical sheet, but not grain-orientated electrical sheet).
