Re: [Micronet] Mac OS X Un/Supported OSs

2016-03-23 Thread Ben Gross
Hello Everyone,

EEI has created a Mac OS X El Capitan (10.11.x) upgrade self service offer
that will upgrade a Mac running versions as old as 10.6.8 up to OS X
Yosemite to Mac OS X El Capitan. In order to have access to the offer, you
must have a device that is either running a Berkeley Desktop image or a
device that is managed by EEI with patching and self service enabled. You
will not need administrative rights on your device to run self service
offers.

If you believe you should have access to the self service upgrade offer and
you find you do not, then please contact Campus Shared Services IT.

Further documentation is available at:

Re: [Micronet] Mac OS X Un/Supported OSs

2016-03-23 Thread David Schwartz
In August of last year Apple addressed an OpenSSH vulnerability (CVE-2015-5600)
with "Security Update 2015-006” (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205031).
Although the update ran on both Mavericks and Yosemite, OpenSSH was only
patched for 10.10.x. At that time IST was sending out SNS alerts for OS X
machines that had Remote Login enabled; the solution was to disable SSH on
machines earlier then 10.10, run the patch on Yosemite, or later to update to
El Capitan when it was qualified. This is likely what led to security’s
decision to sunset support for OS X 10.9 Mavericks.

While this week’s release of "Security Update 2016-002” does include some
Mavericks fixes (including some for OpenSSH), CVE-2015-5600 is still not
patched in OS X 10.9.5, so it can still be accurately described as an
"operating system(s) with vulnerabilities that are not patched by Apple…”.

Bummer.

Re: [Micronet] Mac OS X Un/Supported OSs

2016-03-22 Thread Michelle Bautista
H Roy,

We have been monitoring the OS X migration/upgrade situations since at
least November and have taken numerous steps to mitigate this issue for our
customers. All CSS IT staff are actively communicating to customers as they
locate outdated machines.

We have limited insight to computers unless they are on BigFix/TEM.
However, from the 700+ computers identified in December 2015 as having an
outdated Mac OS, we have reduced that number to less than 400 today. We
know we will not hit 0 by the April 1 date even with the computers we have
enterprise management on but we are doing everything we can with the
limited time and resources to get there sooner rather than later. We have
also been actively working with IST-EEI and ISP to create solutions to help
facilitate the migration.

Short of having an enterprise system or other methodology for locating all
computers on this campus and installing the self-service button, our
alternative to discovering all of these computers is unfortunately tedious
and time consuming. We will continue our efforts to help the campus manage
this risk.

We plan on working with campus partners to improve the methods and
technologies to facilitate large scale migrations. The customer computer is
a frequent gateway to more and more security attacks. It's up to all of us
to stay vigilant and to help our customers understand how they can help
protect our computing environment.

Regards,
Michelle

2016-03-22 Thread Keenan Parmelee
Any Mac using the Berkeley Desktop image should have the ability to do a
Self Service upgrade to El Capitan without needing a technician. But I
know that doesn't cover a big chunk of machines out there.

Otherwise, we're stuck going desk to desk for inventory or asking customers
to self report for anything not showing in BigFix.

Re: [Micronet] Mac OS X Un/Supported OSs

2016-03-22 Thread Baril
This is very interesting. We have several CSS supported computers still
running version 10.9x Apple OS. I think there is somewhat of a
disconnect in the communication with CSS. I believe that they need to do
a complete inventory of supported units and upgrade where necessary.
Don't you agree?

According to this:

https://security.berkeley.edu/faq/isp-security-notices/operating-system-unsupported

Current list of Mac OS X versions receiving Security Updates from
Apple (as of Feb 1 2016):

• Mac OS X 10.10 “Yosemite”
• Mac OS X 10.11 “El Capitan”

Apple released a security update yesterday for 10.9
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222

So does that mean that 10.9.5 is now a supported OS?

Re: [Micronet] Mac OS X Un/Supported OSs

2016-03-22 Thread Keenan Parmelee
The security update you're seeing is for Safari. I believe there were two
security vulnerabilities that were identified that led ISP to the decision
to remove OS 10.9 and earlier from support and I have yet to find anything
saying they have been patched yet:
CVE-2015-5600
CVE-2015-1130
