Re: [Nagios-users] Question: is there any interest in a WMI client for Linux?
Well in terms of need, I have (and I am sure there are others, seen messages to that effect pass the mailing lists on a regular basis) a defenite need to also monitor more then WMI provides and for that matter check_nt does not have either. I am sure there are many such things but these are high on my list right now : - Monitor file sizes (got a couple of processes that dare write transaction logs that sometimes go up to 2 GB in a matter of days at which point the 2 GB filesize problem on Windows causes the application to die a horrible death) - Monitor Directory Sizes (not so much for me but saw that pass by on the list a few days ago)- File Age (nc_net has this) to detect hanging processes for example.- Log parser with a read-mark (so it only reads new lines since last check). Mind you not clear on how to work this into Nagios. I mean, I would want to have nagios monitor a log file for say an error like 'ORA-x no active database connection' (or whatever the exact error is) and raise an alert at that point. What I am not sure about is how to then let Nagios know the error has been fixed. I suppose I coul parse the whole log every time and archive logs when I restart the process at which point the ORA-x would no longer be present in the log but the problem is these logs are huge and would probably constitute a huge performance hit if read completely on a regular basis. It's a tricky one. Either way unless I am mistaken these things are not easily done in WMI if they are even possible at all. But there is no denying that WMI gives you access to a wealth of information. It will be interesting to see how you do it though. Securitywise it seems like a challenge for sure. And performance wise it is not easy either. Count me in though if you want it tested. Cheers.HansOn 2/14/06, Ron Gage [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Quoting Ryan Wilcox [EMAIL PROTECTED]:snip ron... it is understood that WMI would give users the ability to go way above and beyond the 'check_nt' command... what other capability are you interested in building in that 'check_nt' doesn't provide? HiEverything is so well documented in nsclient++ doc that i wonder why you prefer asking here. Anyway you should have first the check_nrpe plugin. Then you just have to define command in checkcommands using ./check_nrpe -H hostname -c check_cmd define command { command_name Hello command_line check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c check_cmd }Please run check_nrpe -h to get the help of the plugin.cheers2006/2/15, HP Geeza [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi All,I am having some difficulty with using nclient++ and was wondering ifsomebody could help?? Re: [Nagios-users] monitor directory size?
Hi, thanks for your relpy! - i have read the documentation but im affraid im still having trouble with a particular check. I have compiled and installed the check_nrpe plugin on my nagios box...i then edited the following config files: ive got a host setup checkcommands.cfg define command{ command_namecheck_directory_size command_linecheck_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -c CheckFileSize } services.cfg define service{ use generic-service ; Name of service template to use host_name testServer service_description Directory Size check_commandcheck_directory_size } NOW i have read the CheckDisk documentation for the nsclient++. However i dont quiet understand how i setup the check in the NSC.ini file. There is an example in the CheckDisk documentation section which has the following (this is what i almost need). EXAMPLE 1:- Check the size of the windows directory and make sure it stays below 1 gigabyte: CheckFileSize ShowAll MaxWarn=1024M MaxCrit=4096M File:WIN=c:\WINDOWS\*.* WARNING: WIN: 2G (2325339822B)|WIN=2325339822;1073741824;4294967296 define command { command_name CheckFileSize command_line check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 5666 -c CheckFileSize -a ShowAll MaxWarn=$ARG1$ MaxCrit=$ARG2$ File:$ARG4$=$ARG5$ } check_command CheckFileSize!1024M!4096M!WIN!c:\WINDOWS\*.* I am abit puzzled on what i need to enter in the NSC.ini file. [Nagios-users] Nagios Hang?
Im running Nagios 2.0 (Stable) on Redhat 9.0, in a distributed environment. Im utilizing NSCA for checks and all appears to be working properly. Im running into several issues that seemed to have started all of a sudden. 1) On my distributed server, I dont see syslog messages any longer, with the exception of INITIAL SERVICE STATE messages. Syslog is working, and in the nagios.cfg file, nagios.cfg:use_syslog=1 I used to see all the check messages, etc. Nothing in the configuration has changed to the best of my knowledge. 2) Nagios appears to hang on the remote sensor. Once I receive notifications that network devices are down, I never see a recovery of the network devices, even though they are recovered. The work around is to restart nagios with service nagios restart. Sometimes, this takes multiple tries. 3) When I have a massive network outage, I receive the appropriate alerts but I receive multiple PROBLEM notifications. Im only using service checks (Im only using check_ping currently) and the notification_interval set to 0, which according to the documentation should limit the amount of messages Im receiving to 1, unless Im using the service escalations, which I am not at this time. I am not receiving multiple notifications for OK messages, which is what I would expect. Sorry about the novel but these have frustrated me into drinking lots of beer. Mike

They should only be used for services that automatically reset themselves to an OK state after being checked and you wish to be notified _every_ time they're checked and not OK. This would account for your multiple notifications. http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/2_0/volatileservices.html Volatile services differ from normal services in three important ways. Each time they are checked when they are in a hard non-OK state, and the check returns a non-OK state (i.e. no state change has occurred)... * the non-OK service state is logged * contacts are notified about the problem (if that's what should be done) * the event handler for the service is run (if one has been defined) These events normally only occur for services when they are in a non-OK state and a hard state change has just occurred. In other words, they only happen the first time that a service goes into a non-OK state. If future checks of the service result in the same non-OK state, no hard state change occurs and none of the events mentioned take place again. -- Marc --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: Splunk Inc. [Nagios-users] Passive Monitoring Issue
I recently converted both of my Nagios systems to Nagios 2.0 and changed my configuration to use distributed monitoring. My remote system send status vis ncsa to my local system, and my local system monitors the remote hosts with passive checks. All of this works fine, except for one host. This host is only monitored via the standard check-host-alive. The hosts bounces between OK and CRITICAL - Plugin timed out after 10 seconds, but even when the status is listed as critical, the ping sometimes shows as OK. None of the other passive checks exhibit this behavior, and if I look at the remote Nagios system (it still is running it's web interface for now) this host always listed as up and available. Has anyone seen this kind of behavior before? Is so, what hoops do I need to jump through to resolve this? It looks like it has been configured correctly as because I am able to see some information regarding the localhost. I am very new to nagios, I am not aware of the steps to add the hosts and services. Now I just want to monitor few servers. I would appreciate if any body could help me out to get my purpose solved. Basically I want the information, how the hosts and services can be added to nagios for monitoring the required services of servers? Thank you very much in advance.
