Re: [Nagios-users] Which Is Best

2011-08-25 Thread Mathew Walker

Hello,

If it's just two sites... I like to have two Nagios servers. I would put one
in each site. That way if the VPN link is down, you don't lose performance
data from the other site during the window. Plus each Nagios server can
monitor the other. Also I've used my HQ install to monitor my datacenter over
the ISP link to monitor general performance of my apps.

If you're going to end up with multiple sites, then maybe start with a
distributed setup now to safe work down the road.

I also prefer a RH/Centos install for Nagios.

I’m looking into a Nagios installation to monitor both our Data Centre hardware
as well as our own internal hardware. Would it be best to have 2 separate
installations of Nagios (one for each site) or have a distributed installation?
Also what would be the best platform for Nagios (either RHEL or Solaris – we
currently use both in our environment)? We access to our Data Centre over a VPN
link.

Re: [Nagios-users] Newbie questions for Nagios XI latest release

2011-08-17 Thread Mathew Walker

To be rather general...

If you can monitor a device via SNMP, you can monitor it via Nagios. Also you
can use something like NSCA to accept checks/heartbeats from remote
systems/services.

NSCA is a Linux/Unix daemon allows you to
integrate passive alerts and checks from remote machines and
applications with Nagios. Useful for processing security alerts, as well
as redundant and distributed Nagios setups.

The ease of which you can do the above... well, that's debatable depending on
what may (or may not) already be done by various plugins other folks have
kindly written as well as your skills to either extend/modify what exists or
even write something totally new.

2) Can Nagios receive alerts from external monitors? If so what mechanisms

3) Does Nagios support monitoring IBM specific hardware - e.g. the

Re: [Nagios-users] What the best way to monitor Windows?

2011-08-05 Thread Mathew Walker

With NSClient++, you can easily copy the INI file around. for NRPE and
NSClient++ config files I always put in 3 generic names as allowed hosts ...
nagios1.domain.local, nagios2.domain.local, nagios3.domain.local. Those 3 are
CNAMEs to my actual nagios systems so I don't have to worry about updating
config files if I'm testing a new plugin on a test Nagios box, migrating, etc.
Only downside is that it does require good DNS and you have the normally
trivial overhead of that DNS lookup.

Ok, so it sounds like there might be 3 best ways to monitor Windows in
  general.
I will have to check them out in detail before deciding which way to go. I
do note that the following though from reading about them -

  1. Checkwmiplus

   - I switched from NSclient++ to checkwmiplus, because agent less
 monitoring gives me a more
flexible nagios environment : - not needing a remote agent makes
migration NAGIOS to another server easier, because
usually because of security reasons, you will be configuring the agent
to allow connections from a particular (NAGIOS)
 server only.
   - an agent needs to be extra
installed on the windows server; that may seem 'easy' ; but it
isn't if you are in a large IT group where people carry different
heads, and things like 'convincing debates' and 'overal installation
 procedures' come into place.

   - there are disadvantages
too : checkwmiplus has increased the cpu load on my nagios server
dramatically because of the combined use of wmic and the perl-based
checkwmiplus script. And multiple instances are running
all the time for a large number of servers. I think I will have to
migrate to a speedier nagios server in the future

  - checkwmiplus is still under
very active development which has pros and cons; pros because of the
active interest of the developer, cons because active installation
components are still being changed, making upgrading and followup
on versions a little bit more cumbersome and time intensive , then for
nsclient++ , which ,already, much more stabilized.

Re: [Nagios-users] RRDTool exits with errors - ERROR: can't make a graph without contents

2011-07-28 Thread Mathew Walker

I recently ran into a similar testing Nagios/NagVis/PnP4Nagios.

To throw it out there... you are using an older version of PNP as they're
beyond 0.6 now.

I was trying to add a new service and testing. I had been tweaking the check's
command line options to find the write output I wanted. Once the check worked
how I wanted, I noticed I was getting an error on the graph. Since this was a
new check, I deleted the existing RRD files that had been created and let new
ones get created. That corrected the issue. I assume the RRD file was
initially created with incorrect parameters as I was changing the check during
my initial testing.

May or may not be related... When testing new plugins and scripts, make sure
you're testing them as the nagios user the scripts will be running as when
integrated w/ Nagios.

I documented what I did for a previous employer awhile back here:

Perhaps something in there may be useful.

$1, $2, and $3. In the wrapper script I added some echo statements as part
of my troubleshooting to figure out why my script wasn't working. If I run
the script manually and pass the arguments as I expect, the script runs
fine. When Nagios executes it, as verified in the log, nothing is
happening and it is because the first 2 arguments are not being passed to
the script. Interestingly, the third one is passed to the script.

So, what could be the issue with the command definition not passing the
 first 2 arguments?

Nagios v3.2.0

And I see the check and check.ok files:

-rw--- 1 nagios nagios 0 Jun 10 13:07 cxHWRxJ.ok

But the check* orphan files just keep showing up. They don't relate to a
specific host or check. No real pattern to time, host, service, etc. I could
understand if the system was hitting 100% memory or CPU... but the memory is
pretty stable in the 50-70% used range. Load is nearly 0.00 across the board.
The system is pretty much dedicated to my running nagios as a test box.

If I remember correctly, the parent nagios process writes out that file,
then forks a child. The child then runs the check, updates that file
and then creates a file with the same name, plus '.ok' in that
directory, letting the parent process know the check is completed.

So, take a look at the contents of several of those files, if you're
lucky, you'll see that either they are for the same host, or the same
service check. If so, there might be something in the way that host or
service is getting polled that is causing the forked child to die.

Also, if you're running a version older than 3.0rc1 (generally always a
good thing to include the version of the tool you're useing, when asking
for help) then you may want to upgrade, that version fixed a bug that
might be related: Fixed bug with not deleting old check result files
that contained results for invalid host/service

[Nagios-users] extra checkresults files being left behind

2010-06-09 Thread Mathew Walker

I'm running Nagios on a little VPS box checking a few hosts/services (~50
checks). It's mostly a testing platform for me and checks in on my other test
VPS systems.

However I keep seeing the extra check results data files build up in
/usr/local/nagios/var/spool/checkresults like:

-rw--- 1 nagios nagios249 Jun 7 23:45 checknbu01O
-rw--- 1 nagios nagios252 Jun 8 02:40 checkHxcsiJ

-rw--- 1 nagios nagios285 Jun 8 13:34 check4g81jo
-rw--- 1 nagios nagios249 Jun 8 15:15 checkvFH7JT

Some days there will be one or two, some days there will be 30-50. The days w/
more entries seems to be the days with more alerts. The files will just build
up and build up for months if I do not manually delete them.

I've also seen my one server w/ a passive check, not properly update back to
the dummy default value of OK on occassion.

I've tried tweaking the various config variables like:
max_check_result_file_age=3600, and check_result_reaper_*.  I thought it may
have been a performance issue with my little VPS, but the memory and CPU load
(thanks Nagiosgraph), all seem pretty flat. My typically check interval is
5minutes. With only ~50 checks it shouldn't be THAT much load.

Googled a bit and didn't come up with much relevant. Any thoughts?

Windows group has EventLog RDP checks, while Linux groups will monitor the
SSH port.

Then we use nested groups for something like DB Servers (dbservers.cfg) where
we have the parent group defined and the subgroups of MSSQL and MYSQL
hostgroups. Then each smaller group has a few common checks we run such as
base TCP Ports and even simple test queries against the default databases.

Ironically we had very view checks to the actual host.cfg files, but add most
individual one-off role checks to the group file.

For what it's worth, Nagios *does* support this. We routinely use
templates which assign a hostgroup to a host, and that hostgroup will
have a set of standard check for that type of host assigned to it. When
a new host gets added, all it takes is a use some_host_template and
all the standard services we run on that type of host just show up.
Patrick, can you explain this a bit further or point me towards another post
that does the same. Sounds like an interesting feature I want to explore.

Thanks

No firewall rules in play? eg. allowing connections from your Nagios server to
tcp-5666 and allowing the remove server to connect back to your nagios server?

Did you edit the nrpe.cfg file correctly and add the server to allowed_hosts?
Did you remember to restart NRPE after editing the config?

did you try actually issuing a check like check_nrpe -H xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx -c
check_users ?

[Nagios-users] Disabling Notifcations...

2009-10-15 Thread Mathew Walker

Ok, been a long week and maybe i'm just overlooking something...

Defined a service on a host like such...

define service{
use my_template
host_name my_host
notifications_enabled 0
service_description my_service

check_command my_check!my_variables
}

However, notificaitons are NOT disabled. I previously had them enabled and am
now disabling them after the fact via the config file. Sure my_template has
notifications ENABLED, but my service definition should override that setting.
I have the issue on several checks and I have fixed it by going into the
retention.dat file and blowing out the line about notifications and restarting
nagios.

My theory is I previously disabled and renabled notifications via the webGUI,
then updated the configuration file to disable... and that last GUI enabled
is somehow overriding the one in the config file that says it should be
disabled.

Am I right? Crazy? Just doesn't seem to work as I think it would.

No, you're not crazy. That scenario is correct. See Retention Notes at

. That behavior is required to reliably and consistently maintain
 dynamic settings across restarts.

Along the lines of probing hosts that may or (more importantly) may not
have nagios checks installed... I wonder if there is an ssh (there is
often key based logins avail) based check that will run things like 'ps'
or 'top' or various shell based commands and parse them to do some sort
 of health check...

 thanks for any pointers.

Re: [Nagios-users] Object Definitions with Multiple Templates

2009-09-23 Thread Mathew Walker

make sure you have hostgroup definitions setup ...

define hostgroup{
hostgroup_name DUMMY2
alias Dummy2 Servers
}

Also NOTE in my test host, I have the line:

use dummy-hosts1,dummy-hosts2

Each defines group DUMMY1 and DUMMY2 respectively...

after restarting Nagios, the host is only a member of the DUMMY2 group.

definining options like this the inheritance overrides settings with the
values of the subsquent templates listed. so the group of the last template
listed is the one used.

Subject: [Nagios-users] Object Definitions with Multiple Templates

I am having a problem getting Nagios to accept multiple templates in
 object definitions.

Here is an example. I have two templates defined in templates.cfg:

 define host {
use host #This is my generic template with
all my basic options in it
 name prod-host
 hostgroups prod_servers #Production server host
 group
 notification_period 24x7
 register 0
 }

 define host {
 use host
 name win-host
hostgroups win_servers #Windows server host group
 register 0
 }

Defining an object with either of these templates works fine. However
what I really need to do is:

 define host {
 use prod-host,win-host
 name windows-server
 address 192.1.1.1
 alias My Windows Production Server
 }

Instead when I run nagios -v I get:

Error: Template 'prod-host,win-host' specified in host definition could
 not be not found etc.

 http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/objectinheritance.html indicates
this should be possible, and that the resulting object should have
properties of both hosts, but something isn't working. Am I not
defining something correctly or is this possibly a bug/documentation
 error?

 Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Plugin to monitor a file

2009-09-16 Thread Mathew Walker

There is a check called check_file_age which checks file size and age. It
can then easily be tweaked (just do the reverse logic) to check a file to see
if it was changed/modified.

So you can check to see if the file is changing (eg, a log file), or check to
see if someone modifies a file (change to a critical config file).

Re: [Nagios-users] CHECK_MSSQL CRITICAL allways as output when use check_sql for MSSQL checking

2009-09-10 Thread Mathew Walker

Wow, so little time to follow the list, but I've got through all this so I
figure I had to chime in...

Start testing via the command line...

my environment works like...

[r...@server]# ./check_mssql -H mssqlsrvr -p 1433 -t 10 -U user -P password

CHECK_MSSQL OK - SQL Server responded in 0.025192 seconds | time=0.025192s;;

NOTES

1) based on your freetds entry... the servername for the check should be MSSQL

2) are you using windows or SQL Auth? if using windows domain users to auth...
you may need to do -U domain\\user as the username

Also tweak the debug logging and check the logs for other helpful bits.

Subject: [Nagios-users] Nagios Queries

Hello,

I'm currently running Nagios 3.0 on CentOS and was curious if anyone can tell
me (in Service Detail) how (without plugins) that Nagios is able to query
remote Linux boxes and gather information such as Current Load, Root Partition,
Swap Usage, Total Processes, etc...

I do not recall doing anything special that would allow this info to be
returned...is it possible that the remote Linux box has a service that Nagios
tries to connect?

Basically Nagios was setup to just monitor, which I figured it would only be
successful with pings, however it's obviously gathering much more info.

Any help would be great...also if there is a better way to gather data, that
would be helpful too.

thanks in Advance!

jumping in a bit late on this one...

so it sounds like the check itself works on the local box... so if you run from
the nagios server

./libexec/check_nrpe -H server -P 5666 -t 10 -c check_root

and then...

./libexec/check_nrpe -H server -P 5666 -t 10 -c check_ora

could your Nagios server also be connecting to the wrong server... ? I've had
DNS issues drive me berserk before.

Hi Guy,

My findings in-line...

2009/7/15 Guy Waugh guid...@gmail.com

They should only be defined in one place. From those errors, it sounds like
NRPE on the monitored host doesn't have those commands defined, which suggests
that it's not reading your nrpe.cfg config file. I would check out NRPE on the
monitored host... do any checks on that host work at all?

Yes, indeed the checks do work. These have been run on the monitored host. See
below;

bash$ /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_disk -w 30% -c 20% -p /var/opt/BGw/Server1
DISK OK - free space: /var/opt/BGw/Server1 35606 MB (68% inode=97%);|
/var/opt/BGw/Server1=16589MB;37990;43417;0;54272

bash$ /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_disk -w 30% -c 20% -p /var/opt/BGw/Server1
DISK OK - free space: /var/opt/BGw/Server1 35614 MB (68% inode=97%);|
/var/opt/BGw/Server1=16581MB;37990;43417;0;54272

Is the nrpe.cfg file in /usr/local/nagios/etc? Is either the NRPE daemon
running or xinetd is handling the NRPE connections? Is the host listening on
port 5666? Are the permissions on the nrpe.cfg file correct? What happens when
you run an NRPE service check for that host manually, from the nagios server?

Yes, the nrpe.cfg file is in /usr/local/nagios/etc with permissions;

bash$ ls -l /usr/local/nagios/etc/
total 32
-rw-r--r-- 1 nagios nagios 7871 Jul 15 14:21 nrpe.cfg

The NRPE daemon is running on the pid...

bash$ ps -ef | grep nrpe
  root 25866 14582 0 16:01:25 pts/4 0:00 grep nrpe
  nagios 1640 1 0 Jan 09 ? 49:38 /usr/local/nagios/bin/nrpe
-c /usr/local/nagios/etc/nrpe.cfg -d
  nagios 9702 1 0 Jul 09 ? 1:27 /usr/local/nagios/bin/nrpe
-c /usr/local/nagios/etc/nrpe.cfg -d

And listening on

bash$ netstat -a | grep nrpe
emm4.nrpe *.*0 0 49152 0 LISTEN
  *.nrpe *.*0 0 49152 0 LISTEN
localhost.nrpe *.* 0 0 49152 0 LISTEN

On running a telnet (on port 5666) to the monitored host from the nagios
monitoring server, I get;

relay$ telnet 10.0.0.5 5666
Trying 10.0.0.5...
Connected to 10.0.0.5.
Escape character is '^]'.

When I run an NRPE service check for the monitored host manually from the
nagios server, I get;

relay$ /usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H 10.0.0.5 -p 5666 -c check_disk
/var/opt/mediation/ora
DISK OK - free space: / 22848 MB (37% inode=23%);|
/=37500MB;54862;57910;0;60958 1491

This shows that the check_nrpe command is retrieving the details for the root
(/) partition and NOT those of the /var/opt/mediation/ora partition

If none of that give you any joy, post the nrpe.cfg file to this list if you
like, suitably obfuscated of course.

A copy of the nrpe.cfg file as follows;

bash$ more nrpe.cfg

Re: [Nagios-users] Graphing data

2009-07-17 Thread Mathew Walker

Well, unless you have the historical data to jam into the graphing application,
it will only be data going forward.

I found nagiosgraph simple and easy enough for my nagios setups. It requires
RRDtool. If graphing is a critical aspect, I would look for a more robust
graphing package though. For us the graphs are just good visuals (for
non-technical people) and help us gauge trends.

I want to use graphing on my nagios instances, and I was wondering,
will it only graph new data from the point of installation onwards,
or will it graph history data from the nagios logs?

Depends what data you're talking about. Nagios doesn't really do graphs
(aside from the trends graphs). Many installations will pass the
 output
from a nagios plugin into another program, nagiosgrapher for example, or

cacti I believe, which will graph it.

Nagios only logs the states, and the last output on a state change (or
restart, or log rotation). If you install something like nagiosgrapher,
it will start logging from the moment it's turned on, but wont have
 historical data.

I believe this is pretty much out of the box setup... of course you'll want
to check the check_nt command definition in the commands.cfg file.

Shouldn't there be numeric values instead of ARG1 and ARG2? I suspect that
these non-numeric values both translate to 0, so all memory use would show
 up as critical.

I have some info on how I did it here:
http://www.techadre.com/content/addon-nagios-event-log

Using NagEventLog on the windows boxes with an NSCA service on my Nagios server.

It works great in our environemnts... of course we all know how noisy a windows
event log can be, but we have all errors reported and just excluded a bunch of
EventIDs we don't need to worry about chirping.

Re: [Nagios-users] How to graph historical data

2009-07-09 Thread Mathew Walker

I use nagiosgraph... it's just installing RRDTool and nagiosgraph, then
adding/modifying map file entries as needed. Most default checks can be
graphed automagically out of the box.

I have some info on using nagiosgraph on my site, some notes about RRDTool
versions, and even a few hiccups/fixes I ran into. I currently use nagios and
nagiosgraph personally, on the job, and have done it for several side

from the installation and the initial ini file to the working and ready
NSclient++ with passive checks.
2. What ports I need to enable on the windows machine? 5667? others? what i

the NSCA is configured and supposed to work on the Nagios Linux machine.

SMTP OK - 0.003 sec. response time|time=0.002578s;3.00;5.00;0.00

Configured my cfgs in command.cfg:
define command{
command_name check_smtp
command_line $USER1$/check_smtp -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -p 25 -w $ARG1$ -c $ARG2$ -t
$ARG3$
}

Configured on host nrpe:
command[check_smtp]=/usr/local/nagios/libexec/check_smtp -p 25 -w 5 -c 8 -t 100

However when I check nagios page, I'm getting this error:
check_smtp: Warning time must be a positive integer

Any ideas on why this is happening?

Please advise.

installing from source should be pretty easy on a Fedora system. any missing
dependencies can be installed with yum. the documentation is pretty good on
this topic as well letting you know what you may need.

make sure you have openssl-devel installed, that always trips most installs up.
if you're going to graph, you may want rrdtool. probalby libgd as well.

Hi, I am trying to get nagios 3.x to install - I was attempting to upgrade from
2.11 but found too many problems, so I am attempting a new install on a
different server - this way no conflicts, etc. I am relatively new to

of familiar with yum and rpm which sure makes life easier for the newbie But
I can't seem to locate an rpm for the latest release of Nagios ver 3.1.2. My
question is what problems, if any, might I encounter just installing the tar
ball for nagios and the plugins to get nagios 3.x up operational vs using an
older version of nagios 3.0.6 that has an rpm file associated with it?

Re: [Nagios-users] Server/host Inheritance

2009-06-25 Thread Mathew Walker

The documentation on this is actually pretty good...

http://nagios.sourceforge.net/docs/3_0/objectinheritance.html

If you have a host that use's the template... then in that host's config you
define the same value again, it will override... except if you use the ! and
+ signs to change the behavior.

in the case of contacts and hosts (like in a group)...

eg,

contact_group +management

Using the line above will add the management group in addition to what was
assigned via the template.

If you used !management, it should not send to the management group even if
it was defined in the template.

If you just used it without the ! or +, it will override the template and just
email management.

I think I got that all straight... dont' quote me, quote the documentation. :-)

 Greetings,

I have a question about inheritance within a service/host. First,
these are completely separate, correct? ie, if I define a host with a
contactgroup of foo, the service does not use that contactgroup, but
rather uses the one defined by the service template, correct? Or does
it fall back to the host contact group if a service contact group is
 undefined?

Next, if I have an existing service/host template with a contactgroup
and I define a new service using that template, under what conditions is
that contactgroup superseded? If I define single contacts, will it
still use the contactgroup? How about if I specify a new contactgroup?
Can I add/delete contacts and contactgroups without specifying the
 inherited ones?

you can probably easilly fix with openssl-devel

if you have yum... yum install openssl-devel is all you have to do.

Hi

I’m trying to install nrpe-2.12 on the nagios server and I receive this message
:
./configure

checking for SSL headers... SSL headers found in /usr/local/ssl
checking for SSL libraries... configure: error: Cannot find ssl libraries

The openssl’s version is : openssl-0.9.8h-30.11 and there’s not openssl.devel
package available… on the other hand the version nrpe-2.8 is running !

On some forums, I’ve read that I could install this patch (see attach file).

How could I run this patch?
Which version is better to use: nrpe-2.8 or nrpe-2.12?

Thanks

Re: [Nagios-users] Escaping broke i 3.1.1 ?

I think you may need to escape the backslash itself with another backslash ...
vaguely recall having to do that myself in some checks when passing values that
had a backslash in it.

Hello,

Sorry for double posting, but wrong subject.

Ton:

Command line:
/nagios/libexec/check_nrpe -H X -c CheckServiceState -a AOS\$01 ShowAll=long
OK: AOS$01: started

Here is the host def:
define host {

#max_check_attempts 3
#check_interval 2
#retry_interval 1

#contact_groups +
#notifications_enabled 1

_CRM_SERVICES AOS\$01

# Macros
_REQUESTOR

}

The service definition:
define service {
# Which _template_* to use.
# (e.g. standard-service-60)
use standard-service-1

# Service spesific
service_description CRM Services

check_command
check_nrpe_parameters!CheckServiceState!ShowAll=long $_HOSTCRM_SERVICES
hostgroup_name CRM4

# Per service options
first_notification_delay10
process_perf_data 0
notifications_enabled 1
max_check_attempts 2
retry_interval 5
}

The check command definition:
define command {
command_name check_nrpe_parameters
command_line $USER1$/check_nrpe -H $HOSTADDRESS$ -t 15 -c $ARG1$ -a
$ARG2$
}

It worked on Nagios 3.0.6. I've tried almost any combination of escaping the
dollar sign, $$, \$, \\$$,\\\$ You name it!

Thanks for your help,

Tore

Tore,

Can you send the configuration for the host and service too? Can you
also send the check_nrpe_parameters command definition.

On the command line, what works?

Also, you said a previous version of Nagios worked with this
definition - which version of Nagios was that?

Re: [Nagios-users] Infrastructure help!

2009-06-22 Thread Mathew Walker

Alot depends on the type of checks, the check frequency, and timeout values.

For example, we have ALOT of webinject (perl script) tests which can take 20-40
seconds to complete. With a retry_interval of 1min, when we have some
issues, we can quickly have many checks running simultaneously (even hanging,
waiting for the 60sec timeout). This can quickly suck memory and may cause
Nagios to crash.

In my situation, I have several small VPS systems that do external monitoring,
testing and development that check to ensure Nagios is running on the our core
monitoring box and page me to death if that check fails. :-)

On a very reasonable spec'd server I'm sure you should be able to handle it.

Thing is, we need to monitor aprox. 500 hosts with aprox. 6000
  services.

Almost all Servers are in a single location. So there should be no
need for Nagios probes distributed on big locations...

Has anyone had an experience with Nagios with this ammount of
hosts/services to be monitored? I need a basic guidance regarding
hardware and distribution model to be used.

We currently have ~850 host and ~13000 service checks running on a
single, standalone server. The hardware is nothing fancy, a plain HP
ProLiant DL360 G5 with 8GB of RAM. You should be fine with a single
server, but there are a few things to look out for:

 * The 'enable_environment_macro' should be set to 0. Enabling this
config option seriously increased the load on our server.

 * PNP4Nagios and similar addons may significantly increase the load on
your server. We collect perfdata and use PNP4Nagios for only a few
 select services.

 * The Nagios embedded perl interpreter (ePN) was a major PITA, it
leaked memory and we ended up compiling Nagios without ePN
 completely.

 * You may have to adjust the command_check_interval and similar config
 settings.

 * We mostly use NRPE plugins and only monitor UNIX/Linux hosts. You
may have to take care not to use plugins that consume a lot of
 resources on your Nagios server.

These are the only tuning tips I can think of for now, but YMMV :)

We don't use distributed monitoring, but are looking into it. When a
more streamlined clustered Nagios setup becomes available for production
use (probably with the Merlin backend), we will definately be
 interested.

I am using the snmp commands. The following are a coupld of examples:

check_snmp_ntpstat -H $HOSTNAME$ -C COMMUNITY_NAME
check_snmp_disk -H $HOSTNAME$ -C COMMUNITY_NAME

I have seen the faqs mentioned by you and it says the same thing as mentioned
by you. But interestingly, error Return code of 142 started to show up from
version 3.x. I did not find that in any previous versions.

Hi All,

I am running Nagios 3.0.2 on FC5 server.

I have been encountering this strange error intermittently on a few checks.

(Return code of 142 is out of bounds)

I am using the nagios with snmp (net-snmp-5.2 net-snmp-5.3) on a few servers.

This normally happens with snmp-load checks or snmp-disk checks.

I could not find anything related to this problem over the internet. Hoping to
get a solution to this problem here.

I would suggest that you use grep to be sure you really caught all
configuration files (grep -ri check_dns /etc/nagios3).

My guess, though - just a hunch - is that you may be accidentally
including the same file twice in your nagios.cfg. For instance, you may
have explicitly specified it in nagios.cfg, and it may also get
automatically included because it is in the conf.d directory.

Another possibility is that the directory structures of the old and new
nagios servers don't match, and you somehow ended up with two separate
 command.cfg files.
