[netconnect] Re: Genesis error message

2000-01-22 Thread Colin-Stewart Bridge Deady

Can anyone explain for me the message I got when an attempted
 connection failed?

"m-clalloc: max amount of memory already used 2555120 bytes
  sana-read(ppp): not enough mbufs"

And, does anything need to be done, and how?

Silly question - how much free memory (look at the workbench bar at
the top of the workbench window or type "avail" in a shell prompt) do
you have? If all used then Genesis will fail.

You need to edit AmiTCP:db/amiTCP.config and change the line that reads

 MBUF_CONF MaxMem = 256

  to

 MBUF_CONF Maxmem = 512

1.3 Mb graphics 13.2 Mb other unused. Should be enough?

I'll try Bob's reply - seems he may know the answer. Thanks anyway.

The following may also be of help. It is a previous reply to a similar
question on this list. I don't claim to understand it, just passing it
on.

  already used (255120 bytes)
  Sanna-read (ppp): not enough Mbuffs
Can someone please tell me where and how I resolve this situation that
has occured quite often on my setup (1200/060 16 meg ram AGA)

The normal solution is to change the Genesis PRefs max mem setting in
Options/Advanced from 256 to 512. However, this may cause problems on a
16MB machine. You are probably better off reducing the maximum number of
connections in Voyager. Using more than 8 on a modem link is generally
 less efficient.

donny

Thanks to Bob and Wayne. Seems OK now. Looking back over my log, the
errors only occurred when logged onto 'freeserve' - never on
'free4all'.

Increase your buffers:

Options/Advanced/Max. Memory.

If you have a lot of memory you can put 10240 (that's kb) which should
be enough for even 32 browser connections. If you run out of memory
experiment with smaller sizes.

JW You could try doubling what's there 1024 works fine here.

I have mine set to 20240 but still get the message with certain sites with
heavy graphics :( (32MB Ram and Picasso IV)

20240 is far too high, this is a buffer size, and Genesis will be using
several such buffers. It's more likely you have too many simultaneous
connections running, which tends to slow things down anyway. Eight
sockets is generally more than enough for a dialup connection.

Hello Jon

I'm using NC2, sometimes I get in the Genesis window error messages
 saying

m_clalloc: max amount of memory already used (255120 bytes).
 sana_read (UKonline): not enough mbuffs

Not chip memory ;) You have the right situation for it to happen,
usually when a packet arrives out of sequence and has to be held in
memory. When it happens too often, you run out of buffer space.

right done that I'll see how it goes it was only on Max. Memory: 256 so
put it on 1024 what about the others in this option what should they be!

  Cheers all the best
