Hello again, I've just downloaded a minimal for mac os x/power-pc and experience the following problem: I've thought that the brokenness of the binary in the minimals is only related to image inclusion, but it seems as if this touches more ares. I am an ignoramus I know, but running context starts with the message: TeXExec | no ctx file found It seems quite normal because the first document on the wiki also shows this message. I searched the wiki in vain through ctx and .ctx for an explanation of its purpose. Can someone point me to that info? [NTG-context] where luatex cache?
I have a setup with several users, one acting as system administrator, the others as users. What can be said regarding the setup of the luatex cache? The possibilities I see are: (1) central cache in the /usr/local/texlive tree; (2) decentralized cache per user in its local texmf tree (3) decentralized cache per user in some unrelated directory (4) decentralized cache per user in /tmp (cleaned out by the system on restart, i think) Can someone comment on the merits of these alternatives? First advise: use a local disk. Caches on network paths are a bad idea. Choose your location based on personal preference. (4) decentralized cache per user in /tmp (cleaned out by the system on restart, i think) Just like the old /var/tex tree, most of the files in the cache are supposed to be long-lived (formats, preprocessed fonts). [NTG-context] maybe OT? ConTeXt on an EEEPC
Dear all, maybe this is off-topic, but I just wanted to tell you about my experiences (and sorry if this sounds like a sales pitch, it isn't!). Since I have a fairly long commute to work, I spend a lot of time on the train and like/need to do serious work there. When you have to schlepp it almost every day, a normal laptop seems pretty heavy after a while, that's why I got me one of those eeepc thingies. Its tiny screen and small keyboard scream I'm just a mobile device, not a replacement for a real computer, and it's not the fastest machine around. However, my joy is great whenever I stuff the little thing in my bag and lift it. I got the 8GB variant. To do work, I always want all my documents with me (so I can easily sync my entire Documents directory between work, home, and laptop) and, of course, my TeX installation. My texlive- texmf tree now is 1.6 G, so I needed a bit more space than the 4G model offers (models with larger screens and hard disks will be available soonish). It has a SDHC card reader, so I copied my Documents and the TeX installation to the internal disk (a SSD) and have my linux installation on a card from which I boot. With a shell script, I set the $PATH so I can mount the internal disk and run ConTeXt off of it. Everything works wonderfully. As I said, it's a slow machine, so you don't want to compile very long documents too often, but it does run every flavor of ConTeXt. I often prepare my presentations on the train, and this works great: I have the environment to which I'm used for editing the source files (emacs + ConTeXt) and a pdf viewer open in another workspace. This setup is one of the reasons why I prefer a texlive installation to a minimal ConTeXt tree: that way, I have to maintain it only once and can sync it between my computers. So whoever has to travel a lot: I find it wonderful to have such a small and light computer on the road. Hello, List! Follownig your recommendations while playing with fonts, I've started to write one. It's actually very basic but I already have a few questions. Here is the basic, working stuff I did until now: \starttypescript[serif][garamondpp] \definefontsynonym [GaramondPP-Roman] [GaramondPremrPro] \definefontsynonym [GaramondPP-Bold] [GaramondPremrPro-Bd] \definefontsynonym [GaramondPP-Italic] [GaramondPremrPro-It] \definefontsynonym [GaramondPP-Bold-Italic][GaramondPremrPro-BdIt] \stoptypescript If I've understood what I did in that part, I've simply defined alias for the font file names. What I do not catch is the \starttypescript line. Is it right to say that the second parameter is the name of the 'class' to which the definitions that follow are linked? Second question on that part: Is the first argument (serif) a reserved keyword or not? What's the point of that argument? Third and last question for that part, in the case, as in here, where the font file names are easy to remember, is it still needed to create that synonyms for any reason? Is it the way to do that or is it better to directly define SerifSlanted as a synonym to GaramondPP-Italic (in my case)? Isn't there any conflict with the GaramondPP of the \starttypescript and the one of the \definetypeface? Or do they need to be the same? Other question: how are related the three following parameters (rm, serif and garamondpp)? And finally, what's the point of the 'default' argument? I'm aware that's a huge load of questions. Nothing is urgent but every replies are welcome, and that will allow me to help others. For the record: you can switch to another interface with texexec --interface=en ... but it won't work for ted files. Here we go: it uses the dutch interface because there is no explicit interface given in the file nor on the command line, and it so happens that line 3 of whatever.ted contains \startdocumentation This matches the dutch heuristics for interface discovery because it is a superset of \startdocument. The second case in scantexcontent in tex.rb probably should have something like a \b at the end of the match. I was confused because texexec --interface=en char-utf.ted doesn't work either, but that is unrelated. You need to preload a module that texexec --module would load automatically: texexec --interface=en --use=mod-01 char-utf.ted That should do it. I encountered sometimes files in the cache with restricted permissions like rw-r--r-- which prevented updating for all others than the user who originally wrote the file. Probably one central cache for static/general things and one under the user home directory for local things. I am preparing an e-journal for astro and I have many articles with
lots of equations. Unfortunately, authors are using LaTeX maths and
this is giving me trouble.
I have read and followed the steps of

and it has helped me a lot but there's a snag I run all the time in: array
Typically, the equation giving troubles is of the kind:

a {array}{rl} or similar, because I would never end... I guess that
writing a script to convert them in eqlign would be feasible, but it's
a very... precarious way... I would prefer to fix the problem from
ConTeXt itself...

EndNote is really designed for individual users, although sold in bulk. If 2 people open the same database on a shared drive they end up with a corrupt database. In my view, a bibliographic database needs to store each reference in the source or original format, whether bibtex, refer, or one of the newer forms, and provide translators and version tracking, so each file can have forks for different uses (e.g., ascii vs unicode char. sets) and edits can be preserved for the next user. In practice, people just dump selected refs to a bib file, make the .bbl file, and fix problems there, so fixes rarely make it back to the master database. If they did, we would still have accents and quote marks being switched back and forth depending on who last used the entry. -- George N. Do you want ConTeXt to parse \begin{array}{...} ... \end{array} and
typeset it? This is possible, but essentially involves rewritting array in
ConTeXt, without any of the configuration options that ConTeXt provides.
The (now deprecated) amsl module provided something similar to LaTeX
array. Have you tried using that part of the code?

yes, I followed exactly the steps of the wiki...
For now the only way of fixing this was to rewrite the arrays per
hand. But LaTeX compiles them, so that I don't think this was an error
from the author
... anyway...

Do you want ConTeXt to parse \begin{array}{...} ... \end{array} and typeset
it? This is possible, but essentially involves rewritting array in ConTeXt,
without any of the configuration options that ConTeXt provides.
The (now deprecated) amsl module provided something similar to LaTeX array.
Have you tried using that part of the code?
