You missed the reference manual rewrite effort (which is now in

Hi Taco,

I'm sorry that I haven't given much feedback on the documentation
project. I got through the Typography chapter, but then was so
confounded by the Fonts chapter that I didn't feel able to give
comments. I will make another attempt.

[NTG-context] Tikz updated in minimals but file does not compile

2009-03-18 Thread Want to Learn
Thanks Wolfgang. I suppose you mean that I need the beta version and not the
stable version. Anyhow, I downloaded the beta version and tried to install
tikz
with the command Mojca mentioned in his post. Everything seemed to go on
fine.
But when I tried to compile the following simple file I get an error. The
following is the information from the terminal window. It says something
like
 ! Undefined control sequence
And on help, it says that The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. As you can see below, it loaded
the
tikz module. I wonder what the problem is.

it just follows the bodyfont

\definefont[SomeFont][SerifBold sa 1.5]

boils down to 'take the bold serif that we use in the bodyfont and scale
it to 1.5 times the bodyfontsize'

so, if you then choose another bodyfont (say times instead of palatino)
you don't need to adapt all your definitions

(there's also Normal, Bold etc that is even more generic in the sense
that it can be sans or serif depending of the situation)

these symbolic names are there for a reason as i never want to see hard
coded font names (and features) in my document styles more than once

Re: [NTG-context] TeXshop instructions on Context Minimals (Mac installation)

2009-03-18 Thread Bowen Alan C.

Hi!

You need to set the executable bit of the file ConTeXt-MKIV.engine.

In Terminal try:

cd Users/Name/Library/TeXShop/Engines/

and then

chmod +x ConTeXt-MKIV.engine

which will allow you to execute the file.

See http://www.ss64.com/bash/chmod.html for an overview of chmod if
you wish to refine this.

[NTG-context] current fontsize in both marks

2009-03-18 Thread Peter Rolf

Hi,

for my overprinting macro I need the actual font size (no overprinting
if size is greater 23pt). After searching and a lot of tries I found

\scaledfont (mkii) and
\somefontsize (mkiv),

which seem to show the right values. Both macros are bound exclusively
to only one mark. Is there a better (more generic and mark independent) way?

But when I tried to compile the following simple file I get an error. The

 ! Undefined control sequence
And on help, it says that The control sequence at the end of the top line
of your error message was never \def'ed. As you can see below, it loaded
the
tikz module. I wonder what the problem is.

A week or two weeks ago the author of TikZ has fixed a problem related
to luatex/mkiv, but maybe that was not the only problem. TikZ works
(or at least used to work - no time to test at this moment) in
general, but there might be some more advanced graphics that fail do
work due to heavy changes in ConTeXt source.

I have recently used tikz in a project, and it works fine. The only
trouble with the latest beta is that Hans has removed the funny commands
with @ in them, which are a legacy of plain TeX, in favour of more legible
command names. For example, \minusone in place of \...@ne, \zeropoint in
place of \z@ etc. This makes ConTeXt code more readable, but at the same
time means that any package which was compatible with plain TeX,
LaTeX, and ConTeXt, will now fail in ConTeXt.

Fixing this is as simple as adding a few \let old-command = new command
things in the beginning. The easiest solution is to collect such things in
a module, and import them before importing tikz or any other module which
relies on the existance of plain TeX like macros.

 In Terminal try:

Thanks Alan. That worked great. I have added that to the instructions
on the Wiki.

[NTG-context] beta: \abortinputifdefined (mkiv)

2009-03-18 Thread Peter Rolf

Hi,

my testing yesterday was only limited to a very small test file
(overprinting test). i had no problems with that, but any approach with
one of my graphics directly ends with

! Undefined control sequence.
l.1 \abortinputifdefined

oops, is syst-gen.tex no longer part of the mkiv core? i installed the
beta two times (cleaned up texmf-context) and also tried the luatex
binary from yesterday. no success so far.

also no fun with mkii. looks like shading specials are broken.

Hi Taco,

I'm sorry that I haven't given much feedback on the documentation
project. I got through the Typography chapter, but then was so
confounded by the Fonts chapter that I didn't feel able to give
comments. I will make another attempt.

Hi, I'd like to second what Rory said. I was delighted by my first
reading of the typography chapter, and had not seen the font chapter
until you posted the link above, Taco. I'm also sorry not to have
chimed in before.

[NTG-context] Module taspresent

2009-03-18 Thread Curious Learn
As mentioned on the wiki, I tried to install taspresent module by running

./first-setup.sh --extras=t-taspresent in the terminal.

A lot of things happened and then I ran

luatools --generate

and then

context --make.

Then I tried to compile the file

\usemodule[taspresent][style=blackblue]

\starttext

This is a presentation

\stoptext

This gives me just a plain page with the line This is a presentation.

The log window says that module taspresent not found.

Before I did all the above, I also installed taspresent manually in the
~/Library/texmf/tex/context/taspresent folder. I downloaded the .zip file from
ctan and unzipped it inside the taspresent folder mentioned above. Still no
success. How do I use taspresent?

Thanks very much.

Re: [NTG-context] Module taspresent

2009-03-18 Thread Curious Learn
I figured out how and where to install the taspresent module. Now when I try to
compile the file it loads the module. However, I do not get any of the colors or
the frames. For example, the following code does not give me any color. It does
though take out the page numbers and sets the correct papersize. Other than that
everything is as if it is a plain text file.

The presentation I am trying is

\usemodule[taspresent][style=bluegray]

\starttext

A presentation

\stoptext

Does anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Thanks very much.
