[NTG-context] Figures insertion.

2005-04-13 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi all,
Have been looking around in doc, but could not catch a simple way to insert
an image into my doc.
What is the simplest way to do this ?
My image name is paris.bmp, and i don't have any info about the size (lets
assume it is a 4cmx4cm).
Thanks for any help.

[NTG-context] Left + right justification at once.

2005-04-08 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi all,
Am using \vbox{\hsize8cm text} to typeset my document with blocks of text.
This makes a left and right justification of the text, but most of the time
it does work alright and i get a ragged right text.

What do i have to do in order to avoid this and get my text justified at
both sides ?

Thanks for any help.

[NTG-context] Brand new install on XP.

2005-04-03 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi all,
Following Hans instructions from a previous mail, am trying to setup context
on a new machine without installing any distribution. I would like to use
the minimal context tree.

Here is the instructions from a previous post:
an option is (assuming that you have rsync running):
c:
cd \
mkdir mytex
rsync -r -v www.pragma-pod.com::mswin mytex
cd mytex
setuptex
texexec --make --alone --all
and voila you have a running system (like i have)
(updating is then also rather efficient)
c:\mytex\setuptex c:\mytex
can then be used any time.
rsync www.pragma-pod.com::

I have done all of this but when i type texexec nothing happeneds. Anything
missing out there ?

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, good example indeed ..
Just few questions :
1. What is \starttable for ? I had to take it off to make the example work
..
2. The first page i get is empty .. Is it normal ?
3. The first page of columns i get is setup with the right columns settings
(which is red, yellow, magenta for columns 1, 4, 6) and the right row
settings, but the second page has only the right settings for the rows and
not for the columns. It is the same for page 3, 4, and 5, etc.

Cheers.

[NTG-context] Directions to use the new table format.

2004-12-13 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi all,

I think that Hans is more concerned by this one ...

Having looked at all the tables ways to make tables within context, i think, that learning the last one (linetable) to do things is more appropriate because it summarises the functionnalities of all the others (hence, less headaches and a smaller lurning curve).

Can anyone give just a few lines of directions to start using this mode (The wiki example is too small to learn from) or at least some words about how to use the implementation file which is core-ltb.tex to understandhow things work(This is gonna be very helpful to all Contexters).

Many thanks.

[NTG-context] Tables ..

2004-12-02 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi,
I would like to use multipage tables. I had a look on the wiki and there are
2 ways of doing that.

What is the advantage of using \startlinetable ?
One of these seems to be that we can repeat columns ..
Is Context going keep going with \startlinetable or not ? (As no doc exists
and its developpement seems to be not finished yet) ?

Thanks.

RE: [NTG-context] Re: Table of contents, alternative d

2004-11-30 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi Patrick,
This is how my toc appears:
Part 1 first part 1–1
(1) Chapter one 1–2 (2) Chapter two 1–3 (3) Chapter three 1–4
(4) Chapter four 1–5 (5) Chapter five 1–6
Part 2 second part 2–1
(1) Chapter one 2–2 (2) Chapter two 2–3 (3) Chapter three 2–4
(4) Chapter four 2–5 (5) Chapter five 2–6
Part 3 Third part 3–1
(1) Chapter one 3–2 (2) Chapter two 3–3 (3) Chapter three 3–4
(4) Chapter four 3–5 (5) Chapter five 3–6
I want to control the distance for instance in the second and third line to
the right margin (This means chapters indeed = Line5,6,8,9 too). This could
result in the fact that my chapters will appear on 3 lines instead of 2
here.

To my knowledge there is no parameter such as distance to change this.
Here distance changes only the distance between chapter elements for
instance: the element (1) Chapter one 1–2 and the element Chapter two 1–3
(3). This how alternative d works (with elements).

This is how the result i want could be:
Part 1 first part1–1
(1) Chapter one 1–2 (2) Chapter two 1–3 (3) Chapter
three 1–4 (4) Chapter four 1–5 (5) Chapter five 1–6
Part 2 second part 2–1
(1) Chapter one 2–2 (2) Chapter two 2–3 (3) Chapter
three 2–4 (4) Chapter four 2–5 (5) Chapter five 2–6
Part 3 Third part 3–1
(1) Chapter one 3–2 (2) Chapter two 3–3 (3) Chapter
three 3–4 (4) Chapter four 3–5 (5) Chapter five 3–6
Thanks.

Re: [NTG-context] Re: Table of contents, alternative d

2004-11-30 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Wha
Thanks a lot to you all.
Hans,
I have tried:
\startnarrower[4*right] \placecontent \stopnarrower \blank[4*big]
This is exactly what i meant.
Unfortunately, there is a problem, which is in my opinion not related to
TOC, but to Tex (or Context, you'll be able to tell).

i get a result like this:
Part 1 First part 1–1
(1) Chapter one 1–2 (2) Chapter two 1–3 (3) Chapter
   ^^
three 1–4 (4) Chapter four 1–5 (5) Chapter
five 1–6
Part 2 Second part 2–1
(1) Chapter one 2–2 (2) Chapter two 2–3 (3)
Chapter
three 2–4 (4) Chapter four 2–5 (5) Chapter
five 2–6
Part 3 Third part 3–1
(1) Chapter one 3–2 (2) Chapter two 3–3 (3)
Chapter
three 3–4 (4) Chapter four 3–5 (5) Chapter
five 3–6
Why does Context cut all the lines at the right place, and not that second
one ?

I got the same error the other day when i was writing a letter.
I had all the paragraphs aligned to the right at the same distance, but the
last line of my document didnt align with them, and i got a text like this:

ks dsdjkl fq sqfl sdlkj f dsld sfjds
s ds sdjklf gfi lkdsjf ig lkdsjf oi fls
sjfskl id fsdl sdi dsjfu fjs fl lùgdd
ks dsdjkl fq sqfl sdlkj f dsld sfjds
s ds sdjklf gfi lkdsjf ig lkdsjf oi fls
sjfskl id fsdl sdi dsjfu fjs fl lùgdd
ks dsdjkl fq sqfl sdlkj f dsld sfjds
s ds sdjklf gfi lkdsjf ig lkdsjf oi fls
sjfskl id fsdl sdi dsjfu fjs fl lùgdd
sdksjf dsjklf ds fsdkl fs fkldsf dj dslf dsjk fd.
How can i control this ?

Re: [NTG-context] Problem with \defintion.

2004-11-28 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi Adam,
This is an example:
\starttext
\definition{HMV} blablabla
\definition{TTV} blablabla
%I also have items sometime afterwards:
\startitemize[r]
%
\head My head \par
\startitemize[triangle]
\item First Item
\item Second Item
\item Third Item
\stopitemize
%
\stopitemize
\stoptext
At this point, it compiles, but when i add a third definition, lets say
\definition{QTV} blablabla

It generates the error:
! Undefined control sequence.
write ... \twopassentry {\s!list }{\currentlist
 }{\currentlist
:\noflistel...
inserted text
   }\endwrite
\immediatewriteutilitycommand ...ti {c \string #1}

\stopitemgroup ...th =\zerocount \dolistreference
 \fi \iffirstlist \else
\en...
l.360 \stopitemize

I have just tried \par after each definition as follows  \definition{QTV}
blablabla \par

I can now compile but the doc does talk about this!
Question: Do we have to put a \par. It is really bizarre that it solves the
problem, cause my items are defined far away in my document from the
definitions.

Re: [NTG-context] Re: Problem with \defintion.

2004-11-28 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Thanks to you all,
\par solves the problem as i said. A blank line does obviously the same
thing.

The documentation has only 2 explicit examples and no \par is used within (I
assume a blank line was used instead). The box where the command is defined
specifies the \par argument which isn't obvious to see because there is a
mistake (\description appears instead of \definition which can be
confusing).

Still don't know why it worked with 2 \definitions but anyway, i know my
error now :)

Re: [NTG-context] Fonts switching and styles ..

2004-11-23 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Thanks Christopher, i have tried what you asked me but this didn't solve the
problem. To me it was the right thing to do, but it looks like it is because
my font is defined as a typeface collection that it does not work.

I have tried \switchtotypeface instead as Willie said and this works fine.
Now, i don't know where you got this command from, Willie (Thanks by the way
:) ), cause it is nowhere in mfonts.pdf nor in cont-eni.pdf.

Am really confused about the proper way to configure my fonts and use them,
i know some trickeries but am not sure about the right way to do things.

Question:
From mfonts.pdf, it looks like there are 2 ways of configuring fonts after
they are installed (page 9).
1. As a whole.
2. As a typeface collection.
In my understanding, when a font is defined as a whole, you can use the
following commands to play with your font:

1. \setupbodyfont
2. \definebodyfont
3. \setupfontsynonym
4. \definefontsynonym
5. \switchtobodyfont
When it is defined as a collection of typefaces you have to use:
1. \definetypeface
2. \switchtotypeface
Now, when to use each one is a mystery.
Could anyone explain a bit more ?
Thanks.

Re: [NTG-context] Fonts switching and styles ..

2004-11-22 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
I have tried style={\switchtobodyfont[karat]} and it works. Now how to
switch to a different size without going through:

\setupbodyfont[karat]
\definefont[MyPartFont][SansBold at 24pt]
\setuphead[part][style=\MyPartFont]
The problem i see here is that i have to go through \setupbodyfont[karat]
and that i can't say something like:

\definefont[MyPartFont][karat at 24pt]
Lets say i have 5 fonts in my document i only want to say
\setupbodyfont[MyMainFont] once, then i should have other mecanisms for
switching properly to other fonts at different sizes.
Why does \definefont maps only from Sans, Serif, SansBold etc. ? This is
quit fastidious, cause for this to work we have to use \setupbodyfont first
and follow the steps above.

I may be missing something out there ..
Many thanks.

Is there a special place to report bugs ?
I have noticed that align=right aligns text on the left edge of a frame
where it should align left as it says (and left aligns right).

Is this normal ?

Looks like rsync does not like firewalls (could be the opposite ;) )
Now that i have the right context plateform setup and working, the question
is: where is it best to install my fonts as the local tree is the one that
handles context updates etc. just in case i have to reinstall every thing
from scratch .. :=)

I have installed Texlive8 (Not sure wether it is the latest one. I have used
TeXSetup.exe).

Am using rsync as you mentioned, but seems like it does not work, this is
what i get:

C:\rsync2.5.1-dev -r -v www.pragma-pod.com::mswin mytex

Do i need a user account to do this .. ?
Which version of rsync do you use ?
Many thanks.

2004-11-15 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi Hans,
Looks like am never going to get out of my installation problems without
getting the write way to do it.

Back to Bill's mc clain method, i have done the equivalent of this in XP:

mv cont-tmf.zip /usr/TeX/texmf
cd /usr/TeX/texmf
rm tex/context/base/*# safer to clean out old files first
rm metapost/context/base/* # ...also remove metafun files
rm metapost/context/*.mp # ...and any from an obsolete version
unzip -a -L -o cont-tmf.zip # overwrites existing files
# Edit texexec.ini afterwards?
cp context/config/texexec.rme context/config/texexec.ini
# Edit cont-sys.tex afterwards? Specifically: uncomment the line:
#
# \autoloadmapfilestrue
#
# For Metapost use, make sure these lines are uncommented:
#
# \runMPgraphicstrue
# \runMPTEXgraphicstrue
# \useMETAFUNformattrue
cp tex/context/user/cont-sys.rme tex/context/user/cont-sys.tex
#
# Edit /usr/TeX/texmf/web2c/texmf.cnf and ensure that shell_escape = t.
This
# is what TeX people somewhat obscurely call write18 enabled.
#

export PATH=$PATH:/usr/TeX/bin/i386-linux # root doesn't have this on my
system

texhash
texexec --make en # en = english
texexec --make --alone metafun
mv metafun.mem /usr/TeX/texmf-var/web2c/metafun.mem
texhash
exit # from su root

Now, nothing changed within my context version, still ConTeXt ver:
2003.9.25 fmt: 2004.8.17 int: english mes: english.

When i use a straight file (e.g AllInOneFile.tex) without the project
structure another version of Context is used: ConTeXt ver: 2004.11.06 fmt:
2004.11.15 int: english mes: english

Things stay the same wether i use the --pdf option or not.
Many thanks :)

Thanks for the rsync stuff, i have started looking at it.
I first need to know how things work in their basic way. I don't understand
why my update didn't work as i did everything the way i was asked.

And now, Pdftex doesn't find my fonts anymore :)
It is turning to a nightmare.
Is all of this because of the new way Texlive works now ?

Thanks all,
Unfortunately, for the moment i wouldn't use emacs but i have tried scite.
The first problem i can see is that it does not handle multiple files
opening, color setup isn't straight forward (Have to deal with hexa values)
..

Apart from this, looks fine. It seems like WinEdt is a lot more oriented
towards Tex and friends writing (Has even grammatical correction).

What about texwork then ?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Re: [NTG-context] Font definitions.

2004-11-02 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Thanks Hans. I see my error now. I was using a typescript name where a
fontsynonym name was needed.

I still have a question about \small and \big. i tried the
\showbodyfontenvironment to see the sizes then tried this:

{\big Hello world}Hello world{\small Hello world}
I get the first and the second Hello world at the same size, where the fonts
table shows that i should have \big at 14.3pt when my current size is at 12.

Is there any interest to define a new font environment in this case ?
This my example:
\usetypescriptfile[Karat.tex]
\usetypescript[karat]
\setupbodyfont[karat,ss,12pt]
\starttext
\showbodyfontenvironment
{\big Hello world}Hello world{\small Hello world}
\stoptext
Many thanks.

RE: [NTG-context] Re: Installing a new font.

2004-10-27 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
I have tried the three of your propositions:
First : keeping sans:
1. using \ss works
2. \definebodyfont[ss,Karat] does not.
Second : changing from sans
3. Changed all refs to sans into serif in my typescript file karat.tex.
This works too.

Now, my font is a sans. What is the best way to configure it ?
Is Context configured to use serif by default when u type any text ?
Many thanks.
Dirar.

[NTG-context] Installing a new font.

2004-10-26 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi,
I have just finished from installing a new font. It works in the Tex way as
follows:

\pdfmapfile{+texnansi-rubicon-karatmedium.map}
\font\Karat=texnansi-raw-KAMN.
\Karat something to type ..
but when i try to use typescripts, it does not work(I have used Bill McClain
instructions).

Any help would be of great help ..
This is my typescript file:
\usetypescriptfile[type-buy]
\loadmapfile[texnansi-rubicon-karatmedium.map]
\starttypescript [sans] [karat] [texiinansi]
 \definefontsynonym [Karat-Roman] [texnansi-raw-KAMN]
[encoding=texnansi]
\stoptypescript

\starttypescript [sans] [karat] [name]
 \usetypescript[sans][fallback]
 \definefontsynonym [Sans] [Karat-Roman]
\stoptypescript
\starttypescript [Karat]
\definetypeface [Karat] [rm] [sans] [karat] [default] [encoding=texnansi]
\stoptypescript
This is my example file:
\usetypescriptfile[Karat.tex]
\usetypescript[Karat]
\setupbodyfont[Karat]
\starttext
This is Karat roman, {\it italic,} {\bf bold,} and {\bi bold-italic.}
{\em \bf This is also bold-italic.}
We have {\sc small caps} and old-style figures: {\os 0123456789}.
\stoptext
And this is the output of texexec:
This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.11b-2.1 (Web2c 7.5.2) (format=cont-en

2004-10-25 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Hi,

Am using \placecontent to generate my TOC, but this does not produce anything.

I had a look at the manualsand it does not mention any special settings.

Any help would be welcome.

This is my version:

RE: [NTG-context] Re: texexec 4.0 to 5.0 update.

2004-10-24 Thread Dirar BOUGATEF
Thanks to you all for your answers.
I have just finished from reinsatalling Context as i kept a backup of my Texlive tree before my first installation.
This time i avoided to do things manually and i have unzipped my files directly to the texmf folder as it is supposed to be done.
Everything works fine now. But i can't get \placecontent to generate my TOC (This is the problem that lead me to update Context at first hand).
A question to Hans:
What is the folder script in cont-tmf ? I had to copy manually the texexec.pl from this folder to my bin folder to update texexec with the 5.0 version. Should not that have been done when i unzipped every thing or is it done on purpose (To me it looks like the peltk folder in texmf\context).
Again thanks.

Hi Hans,
Am using Hotmail directly from my browser cause i can't get my emails to any
email client (Outlook express has a problem working on an xp user account
with restricted privileges).

I'll be more careful in the future. I promise ;=)
My question was :
How can i change the keyword part when it appears in my documents when i
use \part as follows:

\setuphead[part]
  [align=left,
   page=right,
   placehead=yes,
   style=\Karat,
   before={\hbox{}\vfill},
   after={\vfill},
   command=\MyPart]
\part{Sommaire}
the result is :
part 1 | Sommaire
i would like to get :
partie 1 | Sommaire
Thanks.

Hi guys,
I have setup my parts in the following way:
\def\MyPart#1#2
{\hbox to \hsize \bgroup
\hfill
\setupframed[height=.7cm,offset=.5em,frame=off]
\framed[align=left]{#1}%
\framed[align=right,leftframe=on]{#2}%
\egroup}
\setuphead[part][before={\vfill},after={\vfill},command=\MyPart]
But this does not make my parts titles appear vertically centered.
Any one has a clue about it ?
How can i get rid of the keyword part or change it when it appears in my
title ?

Thanx.

[NTG-context] Font sizes.

2004-10-11 Thread Dirar Bougatef
Hi,
I have 2 questions:
1. When you say something like :
\definebodyfont[10pt][rm][tfe=lbr at 36pt]
Do i have to provide the 36pts font files at first and install them or
does context adapt a font file with another size to the 36pt size ?

2. I have installed a font which i got with a .pfb and a .afm file.
When i make the following calls:
\pdfmapfile{+texnansi-rubicon-karatmedium.map}
\font\Myfont=texnansi-raw-KAMN
\setupbodyfont[Myfont]
\starttext
This is roman, {\bf bold}, {\it italic}, {\bi bold-italic}, {\tfa
bigger} and {\tfx smaller}.
\stoptext

Which size is going to be displayed ?
Thanks.
Dirar.

[NTG-context] Context against XSL

2004-09-30 Thread Dirar Bougatef

Hi,

Does anyone have informations about tex macro packages and their
advantages over XSL (previously known as XSL-FO) ?

I have read somewhere that tex is a good implementation of the XSL
standard !

I think this is in regard that tex thinks in matter of boxes (Which is
the equivalent of XSL blocks). I this case, is the difference between
the two in the fact that at the end tex and macros are only algorithms
for typesetting blocks automatically ?

Thanks.

Dirar.

xsl is mostly a specification, and there are program soutthere that
implement parts of is. The page model that xsl uses is not that
advanced. Also, because you more or less make up the page, you also
sort of disable all kind of clever things that batch processors like
tex + macropackages may do. This means that xsl (fo) is suited for a
certain range of typesetting tasks. From my experience your
expectations should not be that high with regards to complex layouts.

I'm on and off implementing an fo engine (foxet) and run into
fuzziness with regards to the specs (a bad omen is that that there i
could not find a good manual and the ones i have are made up rather
poorly, which indicated that we're not so much dealing with high end
typesetting, but with regular batchprocessing of not too complex
documents).

Recently i've been playing with css (from which xsl inherits much,
which does not add to a clear design imo) and i'm surprised that
browsers are so different that one ends up hacking around as much as
one would using tex -) In many ways xsl is driven by the web, and not
by real typesetting (is my guess). paper and screen are different things.

What you use depends on what you need it for. For a long time, the
midset of designers has been shaped by what page maker, quark, etc can
and cannot do (therefore all those ragged right docs, where the
limitations have become the standard). I fear that in the next couple
of years the limited possibilities of for instance xsl will bring down
the standards (if it can't be done, one will just lower the demands),
which also fits in the short lifecycle of most documents.

So, what to use when:
- here i find that using tex directly (using the context xml parser)
in most cases is rather efficient; the problem is always in getting
(frequently inconsistent) designs done. In that respect my motto has
become 'the problem does not change'

- xslt is nice for preprocessing and manipulating documents and often
one can get away with clean coding

- some scripting is often needed as well (for instance in order to add
typographical detail, which is rather easy to do with regexps in
scripting languages)

- xsl (fo), well for the moment i see it as a kind of 'placed xml';
when customers want us to use it, we'll do it (gives a feeling of
independence), but in most cases using some direct mapping onto tex is
not only easier (cheaper) but also gives a bit more control. It all
depends on the design.

- so: just use the best of all worlds (which is what xml is about:
it's consistent -when used all right- and it can be transformed;
interestingly there are quite some organizations out there that bind
themselves to just one kind of xml handling app thereby contradicting
the concept.

In de time i want to write down something on these matters.
Hans
btw, there is a special mailing list for foxet; a preliminary version
is in the alpha zip

Do you mean that i went too far in my interpretation of XSL blocks as
TEX boxes ?
What i see is that XSL as you said is quiet the same thing as CSS2 hence
it will support complex layouts (At the end it is only a matter of
dividing your page into big or small boxes and the ability of accessing
them, isn't it ?). In this case the difference with tex is only going to
be that the last handles caracter (with ligatures etc.) and word spacing
(with regard to hyphenation) according to some rules where the other

previous post but can't manage to do it.
2. I would like to define a new layout that does not contain left and right
margins.
This layout is going to divide my page to 4 parts as a matrix of 2x2.
How can i do that ?
Is there anyway to identify each part of them in the same way as we identify
the left and right margins within the default layout ?
Is this in relation with margin and opposite blocks ?

Many thanks.
Dirar.

[NTG-context] Layout definitions ..

Hi,
I have 2 questions:

replying to the corresponding received mail? I would like to update a
previous post but can't manage to do it.
2. I would like to define a new layout that does not contain left and
right margins.

How can i do that ?
