[nysbirds-l] Rufous/Allen's Hummingbird, Aquebogue

2016-11-25 Thread Daniel Scheiman
Thanks to Eileen Schwinn for connecting me to Margaret and Keith Brace, who
were so kind and generous enough to share their yard and hummingbird with me
and my wife. We saw the female/immature Rufous/Allen¹s Hummingbird as soon
as we sat down, and then many times over the hour we were there. It briefly
fed from the feeder at regular intervals. It also fed on salvias and tree
sap. I took many photos but I doubt any of them are diagnostic to separate
Rufous from Allen¹s. If there is a hummingbird bander around, the homeowners
are open to having the bird captured.

[nysbirds-l] City Hall Park Videos

2016-11-25 Thread Peter Reisfeld
While I was able to get nice video from the cooperative Chat
(https://vimeo.com/193100449) , the Tanager just kept moving, mostly up high in
bad light. The only decent shot was a snippet of the bird pooping. So for
those interested, enjoy:

[nysbirds-l] Central Park female Northern Pintail continues

2016-11-25 Thread Karen Fung
For those not on eBird or Twitter, the pintail was still at The Pool, feeding
along the south edge, at 2:40p. The Pool is at the park's north end (enter at
100th St and Central Park West).

It was first reported several days ago, but today was the first opportunity I
had to go look for it.

[nysbirds-l] Montauk Pt. to East Hampton Birds (Suffolk Co.)
We started the morning birding the north side of the Point from the
restaurant. There were low numbers of scoters and eiders on the north side but
good numbers of Red-throated Loons and Bonaparte’s Gulls. The highlight of the
mornings birding at Montauk Pt. was a first winter Little Gull feeding fairly
close inshore off the restaurant with Bonaparte’s Gulls.

When we birded the south side of the Point we came upon a flock of some seven
thousand scoters with some Common Eider mixed in. We did not observe a single
Razorbill anywhere. At Fort Pond we came upon our FOS Red-necked Grebe. There
was a nice mix of birds at Hither Hills State Park, including five species of
raptors. The only birds of note were two Pine Warblers feeding on the lawn in
the east picnic area.

[nysbirds-l] White-eyed Vireo Endicott, NY Broome County Nov 24-25, 2016

2016-11-25 Thread David Nicosia
A WHITE-EYED VIREO was found and photographed
yesterday at the Chugnut River Walk Endicott, NY (ebird hotspot)
by Mike Jordan. The bird was refound this morning but not seen since 1000
am.

see http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S32693220

Very unusual this time of year and especially since it is a very rare
bird up here in the spring with only a few records in the past decade or so.

[nysbirds-l] Western Tanager+, Manhattan, NYC 11/25 (Friday) & update from Richmond Co, NY (YES) 11/25 & 24

2016-11-25 Thread Tom Fiore
Friday, 25 November, 2016 - City Hall Park, lower Manhattan, New York CityA Western Tanager continues at this park this morning, but has been a bit more active and mobile within the park - moving to the south portion of the park - and a BIG thank you to Paul Bourdain for coming up to let some of us know this, word-of-mouth still works well -The tanager was also returning to its oft-seen area of Thursday, in the eastern parts of the main east-west path that crosses the park (the Brooklyn Bridge will be directly in front of one, if facing east here at the park's east border - trees just inside seem attractive for the tanager - and there as well as in shrubs beneath, the same warblers (Black-throated Blues both male -&- female plumaged, Ovenbird[s] Common Yellowthroat[s], & in the more southern portion of the park, a Yellow-breasted Chat, which was rather mobile at times as was the tanager - also continuing at City Hall Park are "Red" Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, & a good variety of other migrants or winter-visitant speciesCity Hall Park is located south of Chambers Street, lower Manhattan - to the east of Broadway - it is also at the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, & a few yards from the main pedestrian path to that bridge. The area the Tanager seems to be favoring is between the 2 major buildings IN the park, on / near an east-west path, be looking-up and listen for the distinctive call.s from the tanager. It was present in this small park all day on Thursday.Other interesting birds may be in the general area - and the 23-days-now? - "other" Yellow-breasted Chat IS also still present in Trinity Church's cemetery, north portion as of 9+ am today - it is not the same bird as that in City Hall Park, even though Trinity Church is just a few short blocks down Broadway, on the western side of that major thoroughfare. Hot off the Staten Island Naturalist group's list - TODAY, Friday 11/25 - Western Tanager (male) has been seen again there, southern-most point of Staten Island (NYC) which is also the southern-most point in NY state (Ward's Point). - - -"Dr. Richard Veit had the tanager this morning around 7:45am in the field at Wards Point. [A] few of us are out looking."__Thanksgiving Day - Thursday, 11/24 -Great props to the Staten Islander birders Dave Eib and Seth Wollney, who on Thursday 11/24 found a beauty of a male of this species of tanager at Conference House Park in the south-most part of that county, southmost part of NYC and of NY state - that area is accessible, incidentally, by NYC Transit, including the Staten Island Rail (train) which is on the NYC Metro-Card system and is timed to meet & depart with Staten Island ferry crossings from & to Manhattan (from St. George ferry terminal, one would take the train - there is just one route & line - to its final stop at Tottenville, which ride will take nearly 1 hour, & then there is a modest walk east to reach the edge of Conference House Park, a further walk east to the are within Conference House Park, on a path. Thanks also to Andrew Baksh for getting out word of this find to the NYS list asap. Messages (from Staten Island Naturalist group)_1.
