[OmniOS-discuss] MEDIA: Initial OmniOS impressions by a BSD user

2018-05-11 Thread John D Groenveld
Via BSDnow.TV, YesItsMe on FreeBSD user exploring illumos via
OmniOS CE:

| As my growing needs require stronger hardware, it was finally time
| to rent a new server. I do not intend to run FreeBSD on it. Although
| the most obvious choice would be OpenBSD (I run it on another server
| and it works just fine), I plan to have a couple of databases
| running on the new machine, and database throughput has never been
| one of OpenBSD's strong points. This is my chance to give illumos

An optional boot_arguments specifies arguments to the uadmin(2)
function that are passed to the boot program and kernel upon
restart. The form and list of arguments is described in the
boot(1M) and kernel(1M) man pages.. If the arguments are specified,
whitespace between them is replaced by single spaces unless the
whitespace is quoted for the shell. If the boot_arguments begin
with a hyphen, they must be preceded by the -- delimiter (two

I find shutdown(1M) and init(1M) are safer when moving between OSs.

2017-04-18 Thread John D Groenveld
Digging thru the snail mail; for those with ACM digital library access,
see Theo Schlossnagle on gethrtime(3C) in Communications:

| The first observation is that Linux optimizes both of these calls
| significantly more than OmniOS does. This has actually been
| addressed as part of the LX brand work in SmartOS by Joyent and will
| soon be upstreamed into Illumos for general consumption by OmniOS.
| Alas, that isn't the worst thing: objectively determining what time
| it is, is simply too slow for microsecond-level timing, even at the
| lower 119.8ns/op (nanoseconds per operation) number above. Note that
| gettimeofday () supports only microsecond-level accuracy and thus is

Random reboots (and random stack traces when boot under the kernel

You can run a single KVM instance in a zone with r151012

I've not been able to test this yet, so I cannot yet make the claim that you
