a little TO LATE, I've discovered the IPOD touch and nothing on the arrogant Palm platform comes close From: da...@pocketscience.ca Subject: SCOOP: New GarnetOS (PalmOS) Handhelds Coming From Aceeca! Date: Fri, 15 Jan 2010 15:32:24 -0700 To: palm-dev-forum@news.palmos.com Here's some very interesting news for those of you still dealing in vertical/industrial markets: Aceeca is bringing several new handhelds to market in the next couple months, including models running the GarnetOS (aka PalmOS Garnet) operating system!! We've just been given clearance to release some info about the new devices: 1. MEZ1500 CE This device has been coming soon for almost 2 years, but is finally coming to market, scheduled for release the first week of March. This unit runs the Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 operating system. The MEZ1500 looks very similar to the MEZ1000, but features a QVGA colour screen, larger battery, side buttons, and additional wireless options compared to the MEZ1000. Of course, it features the trademark MZIO expansion port on the top of the device, for connecting barcode scanner modules, RFID readers, GPS receiver modules, and so on. It will support SD memory expansion also. We should have a MEZ1500 CE unit here for testing with Satellite Forms in a few weeks. List price on the MEZ1500 CE is expected to be $499, plus wireless options. 2. MEZ1500 Garnet Aceeca is working with ACCESS (formerly PalmSource) to load the GarnetOS on the MEZ1500, which will be the first PalmOS 5.x device from Aceeca. Running on the same hardware as the MEZ1500 CE version, the MEZ1500 garnet version offers a big speed increase from the MEZ1000, as well as the QVGA colour screen, twice the battery capacity, WLAN and Bluetooth options, SD memory expansion, and more. Aceeca expects to have beta units ready for testing at about the same time that the MEZ1500 CE version ships. Both the CE and Garnet versions of the MEZ1500 are built ultra-tough like their older brother the PalmOS 4.x powered MEZ1000. List price on the MEZ1500 Garnet is expected to be $499, plus wireless options. 3. PDA32 CE This is a brand new handheld that is smaller and less rugged than the MEZ1000 or MEZ1500 models. It is just slightly taller than a Palm TX, and about twice as thick. It has an ARM CPU, colour QVGA screen, but does NOT have the MZIO expansion bus, so it will not support add-on modules. It will have SD memory expansion, as well as wireless options. The first version of this device will run the Windows CE 5.0 OS. List price on the PDA32 CE is expected to be $199, plus wireless options. That is not a typo!! 4. PDA32 Garnet The same hardware as the PDA32 CE version, with the GarnetOS operating system! This will be the first new non-smartphone, non-barcode-scanner GarnetOS powered handheld released within the past couple years, with multiple wireless options and SD memory expansion. List price on the PDA32 CE is expected to be $199, plus wireless options. Amazing!! The PDA32 models are expected to start shipping in April. Whatever the solution is in moving our apps to the new webOS platform is fine. however, it doesn't solve the issues of the PDA platform disappearing from the face of the planet leaving a PDA market without the necessary hardware to run these applications that are more of a realtime data collections than phone conversations. the beauty of the TX and similar PDAs is their pricing structure, once that is gone, then we have the Symbols and the like able to charge an exhorbitant price for PDAs which are used just to collect data and nothing more. so we're stuck with an expensive monthly phone service which is secondary to our real needs... RE: Classic emulator interface on Palm Pre
Lee your comment about YOUR custmers not wanting to give up the phone makes my point, these customers DO need both services and in that case the phone/PDA combo wins hands down. Howerver, my comment was directed towards those applications like restaurants, small warehouses, doctors and others where the phone is NOT necessary and the PDA is only used for data collection, then the phone is an EXTRA charge for a data collector unit. In some of these areas a 200.00 unit is what the doctor ordered Luis, From: lchu...@mobitechsystems.com To: palm-dev-forum@news.palmos.com Subject: RE: Classic emulator interface on Palm Pre Date: Wed, 8 Apr 2009 09:48:33 -0500 The days of the $200 PDA are gone forever. The Palm market lasted longer than most (Windows Mobile manufacturers exited several years ago, and the low-end HP units are now $400 +). If you want just a Palm OS device w/o phone then the Acceda and the Janam units will have to do. I do find your comment that phone service is secondary to our real needs somewhat myopic. None of my customers carry only a PDA and no cell phone. Asked which they would give up first, I would bet the PDA would lose. So let's do some math: option 1 would have been to buy a Tungsten E2 at $200, and get a free phone with a cell contract at $49 per month, and I carry 2 devices. Option 2 would have been (and now is) to pay $99 for a Centro (current market price in my area), plus $49 per month for cell service, and I carry one device. So option 2 costs me less money and cuts my device count in half; that seems like a good deal for the consumer. It's not the PDA portion of the device that costs $49 - 159 per month, it's the cell service. Some caveats: - rtti tends to be a memory hog, so it's not recommended. - afaik, exceptions still don't work correctly under prc-tools/pods. - the vtables are stored in global memory, so you can't use C++ objects with virtual methods unless you have globals. - overuse of templates will often fill up the first segment and it's difficult to map template functions into a different segment. If you follow the above rules, you'll do fine with C++. Our projects use an extensive class library that implements strings, vectors, auto_ptrs (an an equivalent for resources), abstract database access, and a lot of other useful classes. C++ has significantly improved our development cycle; if you're comfortable with C++ and OOP you should use it. -- Dave Carrigan d...@rudedog.org Seattle, WA, USA -- For information on using the ACCESS Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.access-company.com/developers/forums/ _ Windows Live™: E-mail. Date: Wed, 14 Jan 2009 13:08:05 -0500 To: palm-dev-forum@news.palmos.com Subject: Re: Are you feeling special? From: vigilante.sho...@gmail.com I think if palm is to survive they need to UPDATE PALM OS!! Seriously. It is supposed to be an OS not a calculator. Most palms come with software that make it only a little more useful than a datebook/calendar. Most people don't have a memory card to use with pTunes... and they would need a stereo adapter to use headphones anyways. A2DP Bluetooth is BUILT IN to Windows Mobile now. You have to buy $20 in software from a non-Palm vendor to do that (not to mention you have to FIND OUT about it). Also, Docs To Go is great... but anybody with a phone like a Treo650 didn't get it... or at least I didn't for some reason. Also it doesn't have the ability to create files... like in Pocket PC's Pocket Word. Also ... Hotsync is and always has been SLOW! Why??? I heard something about it not taking advantage of USB 2.0 high speed at all... and instead using legacy serial speeds. (am I wrong about this?). Either way... I NEVER hotsync because it just sits there seemingly frozen. I bet it would finish in a few hours. Another thing... most common cell phone users would like something better than Midi for ringtones these days. I didn't notice support for non-midi ringtones (native) until the Centro. I hear in Windows Mobile, you can select from a variety of file formats for ringtones - per contact! Windows Mobile (it seems to me) qualifies more as an OS than Palm does... its more useable out of the box... and you don't have to go searching for 3rd party vendors for all those common features you want. Hopefully the SDK for this new OS will actually allow Palm to get their act together. They had better. I think the only way they are going to survive is to make Palm OS integrate with Windows (the dominant OS) and office products even better than Windows Mobile currently does - and out of the box! Built in stuff, not 3rd party software. Well maybe 3rd party software wouldn't be bad if it integrated into the OS well. Also as I pointed out earlier... at least meet the minimum cell-phone user expectations. One thing they ought to add is a built-in PC-Palm file transfer feature... so that music and pictures can be downloaded waay easier. I'm sure many of the Windows Mobile phones already have a USB Mass Storage mode. I'm kinda debating as to whether I should aim for Palm job-wise... because I'm not sure whether it will survive. I really want them to, though. I am still awaiting the next Palm OS phone that has GPS and Wifi like the other recent models. yes, the form appears when the device goes into debug mode and becomes a listener, the pc/CW then tries to connect when you hit the debug button on the compiler which start the compiler and once the program is compiled, it is then transferred to the device. the program is then started and if you have any break points, the earliest one should hit and you can start your debugging session on the pc and device at that point. RE: new palm development software
Code Warrior is still the best in my opinion. unfortunately its support seems to be somewhat suspect and it's not clear how long the product will last. there is also NSbasic but its a big footprint. great for prototyping... you have to pay for these two products, as far as the open source freebies, well they are FREE and open for debate, I guess you get what you pay for. However, I can't figure out how to only change the color of a single character in the middle of the field. I can only see how to change the color of ALL the text in the textfield at the same time. Is there a way to output individual characters in different colors? If not, what is the next easiest way to have this type of output in my form? Thanks. Short answer is you can't do it with a field (*) It is a single block of text drawn in a single font colour. You can do it with a gadget, but you will have to do all of the work your self. RE: Linking Constructor and PilRC resources
Hi Luc, I'm having similar problems and what I ended up doing was porting the entire application to use just the PILRC .rcp files. The problem I had was that the CW IDE no longer supports the constructor file names and event when I added the .rsrc file exentension on the IDE, CW REFUSED([EMAIL PROTECTED]) to compile and link cleanly so the complete port. since I'm moving the app from older devices to the TX it was just as well. The user can thus use the PRC's native language or switch to another language. Moving some forms from Constructor to PilRC in order to break the 100-object limit, I used Rsrc2Rcp to produce a .rcp file; after some fixes, it now compiles right. I thus added the new .rcp file right after my .rsrc file in my CW 9.3 targets. In my resource PRC, the File Mapping for .rcp files is set to PilRC Compiler, but this choice was not available for the main PRC, so I used the export/import feature and I now have PilRC Compiler Adapter set for .rcp files in the main PRC. The resource PRC links fine, but for the main PRC, I get Link Error : aurigaEN.rcp: Illegal object data in 'aurigaEN.rcp'. But even if I load the main PRC and switch to the language of the resource PRC, the forms that are defined in the .rcp file (and thus missing in the Constructor .rsrc file) crash, as if the PilRC file did not get linked in the PRC What can be wrong? Re: Compile Errors using the new 5.4SDK from palm
Hi Lionscribe, all of the errors are syntax errors like 'functions has no prototype' or '; expected' or the like. The project I'm trying to compile is one of their sample projects: the 'NavExample.mcp'. as far as the down load, I downloaded what is available and there is no platform choice as they seem to have a one size fits all. this is their statement on their download: The SDK includes: header files that are required to create applications for latest Palm products using either GNU Tools for PalmOS or CodeWarrior, sample codes for Palm libraries, and documentation including the Palm Developer Guide, Palm OS Platform (dev guide) and API Guide for the latest header files and Development tools and utilities for applications on Palm devices. this statement preceeds their down load choices: Palm_SDK_Headers.zip Palm_SDK_Sample_Codes.zip PalmAPIGuide_HTML.zip Palm_SDK_Tools_and_Utilities.zip PalmAPIGuide_PalmOS.chm PalmDeveloperGuide_PalmOS.pdf HTML_Version_PalmAPIGuide.html (DO NOT OPEN THIS FILE, IT IS FOR THE SEARCH ENGINE ONLY) == I down loaded all of the above (except the last line) and have read all of their text files as well as their header files... Compile Errors using the new 5.4SDK from palm
Hi all, I just downloaded the 5.4 SDK from Palm and the proceeded to: 1) install the lastest update for CW 9.3 2) unzip the 5.4SKD 3) install the 'incs' folder on to the CW directories 4) compile my test application. this led to a 100 compile errors on the test app which is trying to use the nav 5 button definitions. Questions: 1) what am I missing 2) is there a .lib file somewhere. I did not find any on the SDK files. 3) does the 5.4SDK work with CW 5) has anyone had this problem or gotten the 5.4SDK to work with CW? I hope I can get some helpful answers to help me go forward with the 6.5SDK thanks one and all. _ http://imagine-windowslive.com/hotmail/?locale=en-usocid=TXT_TAGHM_migration_HM_mini_pcmag_0507 -- For information on using the ACCESS Developer Forums, or to unsubscribe, please see http://www.access-company.com/developers/forums/

Hello, I'm writing a database application that stores data on a simple database. When I try to close the database I get a DmDeleteErr = 517. I traced the error to a SysErrMbBusy on the systemmgr.h file. I have not found any other documentation on the 517 error code. Does anyone outthere know what's cause. Re: TX simulator problems
Roger, Thanks for the bug advice. Now if you were to re-read the message, where it states that the app runs fine on the tungsten C and the other simulators then you might agree with me that at least you would expect some of the forms to show on the simulator. but it does not and once is fails, the simulator can not be restarted again. I had to re-install it to get it going again, without my app The TX simulator does not provide a chance to even debug the program before it crashes, so I don't see how I can step on something that fails before I can step on it which is the reason I'm asking for help!
