I access Sirius XM internet player every day. Once on the log in screen, type
your user name in the first edit box. Tab over once and enter your password;
then, hit enter. The following screen will then take you to another edit box to
type in station number. There's also over 200 buttons on that page, but they're
not labled; most represents stations, such as button 50 is channel Shade 45,
channel 45. HTH!Best Regards, Cornell

RE: Airport Express Again

2010-09-05 Thread Cornell Ligon

HI Dane,
I'm going to briefly describe my current setup with my Mac Mini:
I have it connected to my home theeater via the digital optic connection using
the optic cable I purchased via Apple recommendation from Radio Shakc.
I'm getting the impression the convertor you speak of is a transmittor to
allow your sounds to be played in other rooms and has nothing to do with a
direct connection to a home theater system.

I ask, because I am a junky for audio sound and always strive for better sound
quality, but I don't stream music throughout my home as of yet. by next summer
however, I would like the ability to stream outside onto my patio for my
leisure time, BBQs, yardwork and etc. smile!

You're right there! I'm telling people now! they just don't know what there
missing and they'll be craving for more! once they've heard their audio
through one of these things, even better! if they can take advantage of a
direct digital link, even the latest versions of Audio Bluetooth are pretty
good but of course range and lack of flexibility are a problem with that
 system..

I have to admit, I'm yet to play with Airtunes.

  Hi folks!

As list members would know I have an Airport Express base station here,
well now I have 2 as a matter of fact. One thing that these Base stations
allow is for the connection of an audio device, you can for example
connect the output of the Airport Express to a Hi-Fi setup using either an
analogue or digital connection hence these devices can handle your wi-Fi
traffic and give you crystal-clear audio into a particular room but what I
didn't know was that you can have a source piped to multiple Airport
Express units at the one time using Itunes so time to throw those ancient
FM transmitters away, no risk of interference, or distortion any more!
just nice sounding audio noise and distortion free wherever I go in my
house or within range of my wi-fi network.

To checkout the Airport express go to www.apple.com/airportexpress and you
can see the specs and other details.

If you don't feel like using Itunes? Sure! use Airfoil and you can Stream
Winamp or any other application that generates audio to your Airport
  Express.

As a final note, I'm thinking of doing a series of Podcasts on the Airport
Express and associated software, would anyone be interested? Please reply
privately on this last point so as not to clutter the list.

I was listening to a stream of one of the NHL hockey games the other night
and it was clear that the stream was buffering. The stream would play and
then cut off of a couple of seconds and then play again for a little while
and then cut off, etc. I assume this is a problem with the size of the buffer.

How would I adjust the size of the buffer to make the stream play more

if spdif?

means digital optic line, your answer is yes. However, you will still have to

alternatively, you can also use the digital coaxial line or 7 separate analog

HI Brian,

No, one you change the sound settings to whichever speaker settup you want to
use, it remains that way. I'm actually using the digital coaxial line myself
with 5.1 speaker set up running into my home theater system.

Whenever I get a chance, I will experiment using the HDMI connection, but a bit
leary about how jaws would operate under such connection that combines both
video and audio sound. I also plan to soon upgrade my weak DVD player on this

I am aware Winamp and JAWS don't play nicely on 64 bit Windows, but due to
my hearing impairment I only use it to play my music, not bothered about
anything else. So as for me it's good but yeah it's strange as I've been
using 32 bit Windows for years and Winamp worked fully with that
 configuration.

I am using, hopefully very temporarily, a computer with Windows 7 and the v
version of Jaws 11 for this 64 bit machine. Winamp won't respond to any
commands, and I'm sure this is because there are no Jaws scripts to support
this version of Windows. It plays but you can no longer set equalizer or
use commands like control shift T, etc. So naturally the sound has a flat
effect, and actually my sighted daughter couldn't make the equalizer work
either. So Winamp may not be able to be fully used with these 64 bit
 computers.

So for now I'd be willing to go back to Media Player, but its menus are
confusing and I can't find where its equalizer might be. If anyone knows
how to access Media Player's equalizer, or if anyone knows of new Winamp
scripts that may work with this, please let me know. Thanks.

RE: CD Ripping Question

2009-06-04 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi,

I would like to try EAC, because I feel other rippers make my tunes sound to
'bright' most often. I currently use JFW 6.2 Pro, Windows XP Pro/Media Center,
WMP 11 or fre rip.

My comp is hooked up to home theater using large 7.1 speakers.

Does EAC allow for conversions to MP3 or WMA for transprtation to my sirius

thanks in advance!

Why do you suppose that is? the documentation on the Internet is a little
cryptic, but it identifies all the codes to arrange a file name of the
user's choice. I did a few test rips before I got the file names the way I
 wanted.

  Hello,

I use Exact Audio Copy and LAME for MP3 encoding. Exact Audio Copy
can also encode with the lossless FLAC format and I rip music CD's in
FLAC. EAC scans each track twice and compares the .wav forms. If
there is not a match, it scans the track more than 20 times trying to
obtain two results that match the closest. In this way, EAC achieves
perfect or near perfect rips of CD's. Because the encoder is
external, I can use the latest versions of LAME and FLAC for ripping.
With CDEX, this is tricky to do and one is generally left with the
  outdated technology.

With EAC rips, you will be satisfied with the results for your
  lifetime. It is that good.

I too have the same problem. when I go to Jimsumptershow.com and click on

file type...

this began about a month ago and occurs on all my PCs. I had my wife try to
access their site via her work comp and got the same message. so I figure it's
a WMP 11 issue probably related to the windows Genuine Advantage tool.

 HI.
 having some problems since yesterday.
 jaws and my system crashed.
then several reboots, figured out that volume control had muted jaws.
 so fixed that problem.
but now go tseveral stream files in windows media player and like for
 example the fivee aa.asp.
but it says that it cannot either play the requested service or says that my
 computer memory is low.
and only have got windows mail running.
 can any one help.
 how do i resolve this.
also tried to play some abc stations, and get a message saying that the
media service is having some technical difficulties.
so, any one had this problem before and how to fix this.
when for example i go to http://www.fiveaa.com.au and click on listen live,
the windows save as dialog comes up and then windows media player downloads
the saved file to a folder called docs/ documents.
but before this happened. di install real media.
but before installing, did not have to download and save these files.
 running windows vista.
 windows media player 11.

Best way I can think of is buy one of those cables that have two RCA
 jacks
on one end and 1 at the other. Plug the end with 1 jack into a laptop,
 with
a thumb drive in it, and plug the other two into a stario or tv equipt
 with
 2 stario jacks.

T-mobile At Home service

2008-10-08 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi all,
I just wanted to share information of cel provider T-Mobile's new 'At Home'
phone service. You must be a T-Mobile cellphone subscriber, and adding home
service only costs an additional $10 per month with 2 year subscription.

I had mine fully instaled yesterday and so far, it's great. It is a VoIP
service running via your comp. However, if running Road Runner wireless, which
has a built in router, it will block the Linxys router that's made for the At
Home service.
You can read more by doing a google search. The price cannot b beat for
unlimited nationwide calling. I was paying $45.95 for Time Warner phone
services plus an additional $7.95 for wireless on my modem. The At Home router
via Linxys is also wireless.
I didn't pay for the router or the 2 V-Tech cordless phones, which costs
roughly $159 for all equipment. You may be able to go into your nearest
T-Mobile store and talk them into giving you the equipment free in exchange for
the 2-yr. subscription.

Cornell

RE: Burning audio discs

2008-10-01 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi don,
Walter illustrated how to access the bur menu perfectly. Open the player and
tab over about 10 times. Hit space bar on burn menu and you should see option
for audio or data cd. Once you check or recheck audio, you can then proceed, as
you normally would by dragging and dropping your files onto the CD drive. The
player should open once you select burn to disc.
Then, once the player has opened again, you can then tab over to the section
that lists your songs. Once you’re sure the songs you selected are there, I
believe it’s only one more tab over to start burn button.

This is not the optimal use of the player’s directions for burning, but it’s
the same way I do it – just copy music files onto the drive with disc inserted;
followed by burn to disc; followed by player opening, tab over to see your
files there waiting to begin the burn, and one more tab over to start the burn.

The orthodox method for WMP burn procedure goes entirely through the player,
but I haven’t gone that route before.
Tinker around with the player’s features by tabbing through the entire set. The
player has a lot nice features such as the graphic EQ, SOS Wow effects for bass
enhancements and surround sound, preprogrammed EQ settings such as rock, rap,
blues, swing speech, default and etc.

Don, Launch WMP. the first thing you should hear is; Windows media button.
Then: Minimize windo button, Restore down Windo button, close windo button,
now playing button, now playing menu button, Library button pressed, Library
menu button, Rip button, rip menu button, burn button and then burn menu
button. Once you get to burn menu button, press the space bar. Make sure
the Audio CD is checked. Once you've done this, escape out of the context

Hi,
I'm currently at work and this box has WMP 9, which hasn't been set up yet. I
wil check it out when I'm home, so it will either be during the overnight or
some time in the morning. I know once the player is open, you can tab or shift
tab through the different features/buttons of the button, but I don't know of a
direct short cut key to take you to that tab, or how many tabs over.

Jonathan,
This is great news. I am currently using JFW 6.2 and only tinkered with the new
Itunes for a brief moment. I already noticed access to import a WMA file and
Itunes automatically converted it to it’s AAC format after I selected convert.
I wil have more time for exploration this weekend using older JFW.

Alex and all, the new iPod Nanos are sort of accessible but do not use text
to speech. They use the technique Rockbox has used for around 5 years, where
they use your default system voice on your PC/Mac to create files that live
on the nano to announce menus, albums and songs.

In terms of iTunes in Windows, iTunes 8 has implemented extensive use of
Microsoft Active Accessibility (MSAA). Because of this, JAWS will be able to
work well out of the box with iTunes once we enable MSAA support for iTunes
in the next public beta of JAWS 10. I have just been testing this today and
am able to use the iTunes Music Store, the Radio feature and many others.
Apple have done a good job here.

I have an Onkyo stereo receiver that I like a lot. It's a little

with the remote or manually. It has 100 watts per channel, inputs for
xm radio as well as a built in am/fm radio and has cd, aux, phono and a
couple of tape inputs and outputs.

I also have a Sony 7.1 surround av reciever. I've never been able to
really get it set up properly. It sounds great when I get things going,
but the surround sound features have me perplexed.

If you go stereo, I'd look at Onkyo, Denon and Harman Karden.

 Good luck.

Ok this is my opinion for what its worth, there's a really nice
bargain-priced amp out there with surround-soung, yep its only 5.1 but
if you're looking for a genuine bargain and you're really interested
in 2 channel sound rather than really interested in rearranging your
room for surround-sound and you just want a good stereo amp (despite
the extra 5.1 affect) then take a look at the unit found at
 http://www.oo.com.au/Multi_Channel_Power_Amplifier_P7417.cfm
Of course the other way you can go is to do some digging and find that
second-hand treasure for a song, too many to mention here . but
one model I like which seems to come up every so often around the
traps is the Technics SUZ11, its a very small slim line AMp and
delivers 50 watts RMS per channel, its small enough to tuck under your
arm so if you're in the habit of rearanging things or needing an amp
small enough to take to a small hall with a bit of punch then this is
the amp. Not much to rave about in the features steaks, just 3 inputs
(fono, AUX and Tuner) and 2 stereo speaker outputs (A and B) but in
the Hi-Fi game? Well sound quality comes well before features .

I personally don't believe in buying receivers, I prefer to match a
good tuner with my amp but each to their own, in the tuner steaks
there are 2 kinds, one which gives you a narrow band with good
sensitivity and the other giving you a nice wide band, great audio
quality but not so sensitive. I have 2 different Denon tuners here
each fitting the characteristics I've just outlined but e warned, even
on the second-hand market these little beauties fetch a few hundred
dollars and their FM quality is truly outstanding.

As a final thought, if I were going to go for a receiver and I wasn't
at all too concerned about surround-sound? Well give the Denon AVR2000
a look over, fetches about $300.00 on the second-hand market but I've
seen them go higher in price, a truly outstanding 5.1 receiver with 80
watts RMS per channel (that includes the 2 rear channels) and an
 excellent wide band tuner.

Did I answer any of your questions? Probably not, I just rambled
 .

RE: av reciver or stereo reciever

2008-09-04 Thread Cornell Ligon

If I can piggy back on Clifford's comments - I found the Onkyos the easiest to
use. I own a 989 version 2 AV receiver as well as a 90 pro and owned a 919;
once set up, very easy operation, but periodic sighted help is needed to make
adjustments in some of the surround features. HK from what I remember are also
rather easy, but haven't assessed the newer units.

Sony and Denon are the most difficult I've had to deal with and gave away a
Dennon receiver and a Sony processor for that reason.
also, the price for Onkyo receivers are dirt cheap now with nice freatures on
low-end models (304 and 504 models are roughly 75w by 5 channels).

Hello there,
You can simply go to the file folder of each rip and select individual songs.
Then, copy and drag over to CD drive.Once you've moved all the songs you want,
tab over once, followed by down arrow to 'burn to disc.' That should then open
WMP and you may have to tab over and hit the ‘start burn’ button.
HTH!
Once you’ve put all song files there, tab over once, and then arrow down to
burn

RE: the overlooked MP3 player

2008-07-28 Thread Cornell Ligon

Best Regards, Cornell From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Pc-audio@pc-audio.org
Subject: Fw: the overlooked MP3 player Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2008 13:24:17 -0600
I've seen a few people who have put together guides to accessible MP3
players, and they all tend to overlook this one. I don't know why, because
it's just as screeneless, reasonably priced, and it's a rather unique piece.
This is the Sansa Shaker by Sandisk. I got a deal on it from www.buy.com in
May when the red 1 GB model was on sale for about 20 bucks with free
shipping. If you want to skip my description and see the official one by
Sandisk, use this here link
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1253 otherwise, you can
read ahead. So, this thing may be overlooked because it is marketted towards
kids. But I think if you are a gizmo nut like me, you just won't care and
will find it fun to use. It comes in various colors and you can get it with
either 512 megs of storage or 1 GB, and I think you can also use a 2 GB SD
card in the 1 gig model. Oh, that's right! This is a player that has no
on-board memory, but will store your stuff on standard SD cards. First,
what's it look like. Again, for you gizmo fans, you'll like the shape. It's
pretty much a cylinder with a flat top and bottom and it's thinner in the
middle than it is toward the ends. I suppose it's what you'd call an
hourglass shape. I call it my salt shaker because it also looks like a
high-tech salt shaker. The controls are way way easy to use. First, on top
there's a small speaker, and although the sound is strong and not extremely
shrill, the fidelity is limitted, probably best for voice recordings. There
is one button which is flush with the rest of the unit, and that's more
towards the bottom. This is your power and your play/pause button. There are
two standard mini headphone jacks on it so two people can listen at once if
you like. Finally, there is a band at the top for adjusting volume and a band
at the bottom for skipping tracks forward or back. You just grip the band and
twist it one way or the other to perform a function, and let go once you have
things the way you want them, since they spring back when you're done. It is
called the Shaker because you can also skip tracks by pressing and holding
the Power/Play button while your track is playing and give it a vigorous
shake up and down. You'll hear a camera shutter noise and it will skip
tracks. I'm not sure if you can control in which direction it'll skip this
way, so it may be a sort of randomizer. It's powered by a single AAA battery,
and the website claims that will last ten hours while you are under
headphones. The battery and the SD card as well as the port for the USB cable
that comes with it are located under a twist-off cover on the bottom of the
unit. You do not need special software to transfer files, so you can just use
Windows Explorer to copy and paste from one location to the player. I believe
it will only play MP3 and .wav files, and it comes with a small folder of
sample MP3 files. I find that it will not play some MP3 files, but not sure
what exactly it's picky about. But I'm pretty sure it'll play most MP3 files.
It does not avhe any resume capabilities, so when you shut the player off and
turn it on later, you are at the beginning of the file you were listening
to. I actually use mine to play books on, even though the books are on MP3 CD
as well. I can just use its little speaker and play my book while doing stuff
in the kitchen or whatever. It's a nice little player, and it seems to do
what it does well. Yes, I still think the Zen Stone is the most versatile
off-the-shelf player, but this one is good if you want to either store things
on multiple SD cards or you just want a groovy-looking gizmo to play your
files on. It's worth a look if you just want something to play your MP3 files
on. Please feel free to share this review wherever you'd like, as I don't
think too many folks know about this one. Also, you can send it to anyone you
know who might be putting together a guide for off-the-shelf players.

Hi All,
I just purchased a sirius satellite Stiletto 100, which comes with Yahoo My

the sowftware program.
My questions are:
do I absolutely need to use this program to sync music files to the player?
if not, is WMP 11 an option?
can music files be dragged and dropped to the device?
is there another way to access other features of the player using windows
explorer?

any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated...

RE: Sirius Online Question

2008-06-12 Thread Cornell Ligon

often times, especially being your first time using the player online, you must
activate an active x control for such sites. Once you clikc on the page, before
entering any data, simultaneously hit alt-N. JAWS should then announce this
page is trying to install active x control... move arrow down to go through
options: allow, never etc.
once that's complete, if tha'ts the problem, you can then enter the data as
normal for your user name and password; tab over to listen and type the numbers
you hear, shift tab back to edit box and enter the numbers.
I must warn, turn your volume up a bit and listen very carefully, because the
voice is horrid and takes some getting use to...
good luch! HTH!

 Subject: Sirius Online Question

Hi all. After signing up for Sirius yesterday, I learned that to listen
online I had to press a button and listen for a series of numbers, which I
then had to copy. Ok, inconvenient, but workable. However, today when
pressing the button to make the numbers speak, I hear nothing, even after an

extended wait. This is the case for three different computers.

I phoned Sirius, only to be told that there was no way that the problem
could be their fault. They claim it must be a windows issue and would not
discuss it further. When I asked the tech to at least try the button to
ensure that it worked for him, he said he couldn't do that because he had no

 speakers on his computer.

So my question. Does anyone use sirius online? If so, do you have a problem
getting the number sequence to speak?

Thanks for any and all info.

 Larry

RE: Need help with Sirius Stiletto 2

2008-05-18 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi,
As previously stated, sirius Online does have an audio captia - there is a
button underneath the edit box. when that button is pressed, there is a
horrible audio captia that announces numbers to enter into the edit field. I
noted the audio is horrible, but if you turn the volume up a bit on your
system, you ought to be able to make out the numbers spoken.
as noted, the button to hear the audio is immediately under the edit field
where folk with vision would just enter the characters displayed on the screen.
sirius Online is accessible, but the captia voice takes some getting use to.

-0400 Hi everyone. I just set up a Sirius account today over the phone with
my new Stiletto 2. I'm hoping someone out there has this radio and is using
it successfully. The first problem I am having is that I cannot log into my
account because there is a graphical capcha. I have already created the
account with the customer service rep over the phone, who helped me set up a
username and password, but now that I am trying to log in, the capcha is a
huge barrier. I realize I may not be able to interact online with Sirius,
but is anyone aware of blind podcasters who might have done an audio review of
this radio so that I can become more familiar with it? Thanks in advance

RE: DTV Converter Boxes

2008-04-30 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hello,
You ought to be able to buy at least a 30' model for $500 or less. also, I'm
figuring as long as you can get a signal into the converter box and have
something to play it back, TV ought not be necessary. I've ran vcr's with no TV
set using connection via my stereo to pick up TV sound.
Last, if you have a cable or satellite set top box, no digital to analog
converter box is needed, because the set top box does the conversion from the
provider. I will say though, when getting a set top box, I alwaays verify audio
out connections to run into my Home theater system.

I also rip using WMP 11 and have no accessibility issues. You tab over to
window displaying the files and merely uncheck the ones you don't want to rip -
by default, all are selected. You then tab over once and hit start rip.
In preparation, you go into rip menu settings and choose the configuration you

I can't tell you anything about the list, but I often use WMP 11 to
 play
DVD movies. In most cases, it's a matter of hitting cntrl S to stop
 the
initial play, followed by cntrl P to start the commercials before the
movie. In many other cases, merely hitting enter will start the movie.
Your friend may be experiencing the screen that asks you to select
 which
version of the movie you'd like to watch, such as theatrical, behind
 the
scenes, final edit etc. It largely depends on how the movie studio set
 up
the DVD and of course, a number of features may not be accessed via
 screenreaders.

control S to stop. as noted, in a number of movies, simply presssing enter will
start the commercials before the movie... in some cases, you can FF through the
commercials skipping to movie content...
you will not be able to skip pass the usual copy warnings and such though...

+ p to play the movie? I did just upgrade my program to WMP11.

 Please advise. Thank you.

Michael Lang, a really friendly guy who helped many of us with many pc-audio
 concerned problems, died recently.

Unfortunately I didn't know im personally.

But I had to learn from from reliable sources that apparently he hanged
himself a couple of days ago.

I am so very sorry, and I sencerely regret not having thanked him more for
all his help and support and I am very, very sad that he passed away!

 May he rest in peace.

Please appologise my clumsy language! I really think that we've lost a very

RE: artifacts in mp3s, was re: Creative Zen Stone

2008-03-07 Thread Cornell Ligon

I know what he's describing. many compressed files, especially heard when using
good headphones, the sound seeems too compressed - not producing all the
different frequencies you might hear in the background as meant by the producer
of the track.

In addition, yes, there is WMA, WMA variable bit rate, WMA pro and WMA
lossless. I own a Pogo radio with MP3 player, which plays the first 3 formats I
listed, but I never tried lossless format on it. It may be beneficial to
contact tech support of the manufacturer to clerify before the purchase.

hi. Ok, maybe my ears have just never been trained to hear these
sounds. I can definitely tell if an mp3 has a lot of artifacts, like
for example if a badly encoded mp3 has artifacts you'll hear a sort
of swishy sound, that's the best way to describe it, especially with
higher frequency stuff like symbal crashes and stuff like that. But
being able to tell something in the 60 to 120 hertz range? I couldn't
tell you something like that if my life depended on it. All I know
is what sounds good to me, and what doesn't, but my ears aren't
trained enough to give you specifics such as that.

Maybe there is something wrong with my ears, but if it's a loscy file of
some kind that I'm listening to, I can hear a faint ringing noise in the 60
to 120 HZ range.
And that is bother some to me.
But with lossless files, I don't hear that noise.
If the creative Zenstone can play WMA lossless files, then I'm sold on it.
But if not, then I will have to come up with a plan b as far as small
portable music players go.

I don't know of a difference between WMA and lossless WMA. I thought
WMA was pretty much a lossless format regardless. Alls I know is what I
read in the manual and hear from Creative technical assistance, that they
play MP3 and WMA with no reference to lossless WMA.

RE: Converting Itunes files

I just read an article not specific to any file type, but it noted any
compressed file converted to another is then recompressed to the new file type.
with that stated, there wil be a bit of sound loss.
I've gotta figure though using a high bit rate will reduce the loss of
quality...

itunes files are m4a files - not sure what is at the root of that. I'm sure
you're right - to convert them to mp3 must involve some loss. I really was
asking if the highest setting 320 is 'perfect' as Sound Taxi says, or if I
could maintain the original quality by converting the itunes file to wav.

 Hi
Using Sound Taxi am I right in saying that converting Itunes files, I
 would be
better to use the MP3 320 bit rate setting rather then anything lower,
 for
example 192 which some of the files are downloaded at. I don't suppose it
 will
improve the quality but will it maintain it? (I'm kind of assuming that
 as Sound
Taxi re-records the file that it re-compresses it.) When 320 is claimed
 by Sound
Taxi to be 'Perfect' would it be as good as using the wav conversion?
 Finally
would I just be best to use the wav conversion of the files to maintain
 the
 original standard?
The answer's probably obvious but I just wanted clarification in order to
 keep
the files at the best possible quality.
 Thanks.

people used to use many of the Iriver player-recorders. I am not familiar
 with any
of them, but the muvo recorders from creative are mostly inaccessible to blind
people. a scroll wheel is used to access the menus. since they don't beep, you
don't know where you are! I was quite disappointed because they are small
 enough
to fit into a pocket. they use a sub-miniature jack for the line in jack too.

 Hello,

A friend of mine wants to record things like the radio and tv using some
sort of modern mp3 or similar audio player/recorder. We're looking around
for any such unit which is inexpensive and has a line in jack. Are there any
 such things available?

I know of the PlexTalk, and I think MileStone311 also can do this, but I was
hoping to find something a bit less expensive.

Perhaps the Edirol R9 may also do this, I'm not sure, but that comes with a
 price too.

He has a Creative Moovo, I think he said, It does what he wants, but you
must crawl thru a dozen menus to do it.

 Help appreciated.

RE: Error Msg when burning cds.

2008-02-04 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi Cathy,

You can pick up a lense cleaner just about anywhere these days. It's no more
than a plastic disc just like a CD, but it has a tiny soft brush underneath
that swipes across the lense.
I've seen them with a thin strip brush going from end to end on a disc, just
one end going from center of disc to the rim, or widened patches of soft
brushheads to clean the lense.

HTH

P.S.
You just put the disc in like a CD. Some may have additional instrucitons, such
as putting in facing a certain way or leaving it to run for a period of time.
Pirmarily, it just brushes across the top of the lense in the disc drive.

 High Cathy and Tom,
This is a pc audio topic, so you're ok.
I have seen this problem before.
When I encountered it, I found that it mint that there was something wrong
 with the CDRW drive.
The laser lens maybe dirty or there maybe some kind of a technical problem
 going on with it.
 Try cleaning the lens first.
If that doesn't work, you may have to replace the drive with a new one.
 Good luck!

 Hi,
I use an hp laptop (the DB9000T) and my vinyl recordings sound pretty
 good
to me. I am using the integrated sound to record. I think that it's an
conexant integrated audio device or something like that. Should I really
get an external USB soundcard instead of using the internal one? What
 are
the advantages? I am using sound forge to do the recording.

RE: HD radio

2008-01-16 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi John,
I agree - a good analogy - similar to the HDMI mess, which seems to be settling
down with HDMI 1.3 for now. However, Onkyo has a component HD radio tuner that
also has satellite connectivity as well as Internet radio. The interface is
'future proof' with RS-232 connection for upgradability when newer features or
formats are available.Best Regards, Cornell From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To:

+1300 Very well said Bob. The format wars are further complicated by the
fact that the US is using a different standard from the predominant digital
radio standard in the rest of the world although they are trying hard to get
other countries interested. This seems to me like cell phones all over
again. The US went down their own road, but eventually GSM, the world
standard, has started to dominate. I hope HD Radio dies a natural death, as
I don't particularly like the idea of having to have one radio for the US when
I travel there, and another for the rest of the world. I'm sure people from
the US who travel elsewhere feel the same. Jonathan-Original

There are still a number of technical issues that have to be ironed out. In
Canada, for an example HD licences for broadcasters are issued conditionally
on an experimental basis only. If I had my druthers I would purchase a
satellite radio before going HD. When was the last time that you heard an ad
on television saying that the latest model of a given car comes complete with
an HD radio? We all know what happened to am stereo,it appeared to be a good
idea at the time, however the manufacturers of radio receivers failed to come
through with the goods, and the system failed. Another example was the Sony
beta system, as the public showed favour towards the VHS cassette. Now we are
faced with another dilemma, blue ray up against yet another competitive
format. I have had a satelite radio for almost two years now, and frankly
would not switch back. Some times it is best to sit on the sidelines for
awhile until such time that all of the technical bugs of a given system are
ironed out. - Original Message - From: chris ramsay [EMAIL

Brad,
When the DVD is loaded, windows should then prompt for which program to use. I
would advise the person to use the program they're most familiar with.
for example: on my PC, it offers Power DVD, WMP, Real Player, and HP DVD Play,
which I believe uses the Quick Time Player. I currently use the HP DVD Play,

If I understand correctly, you don't necessarily have to purchase the hardware.
Especially if your job allows workers to visit any site, you can listen to
sirius online via their player. I'm almost certain it's accessible, because a

I can handle my VCR because it has the speak easy menu on it.
I've called Dish Network and demonstrated that VCR for them over the phone
 many times.
I have asked them, how come your receivers can't be designed to do that?
I also let them listen to this computer and asked them the same question.
They said something about the cost to make their receivers do that.
I said to them, but I need it to do this for me because I am unable to see
 my TV screen.
The rep asked me, how come you can't see your TV screen?
I said, because I am a blind man.
He didn't have an answer for me.
But than again, neither did all the other reps that I spoke too at Dish

To my knowledge The rebate program is only available in the United Snakes at
this time, and for those boat anchors they are old TV's that are not worth
repairing if they break down, and for the repair shop they will charge at
least a hundred bucks just to check it out. For the price of a check over

If by boat anchors you mean your analog televisions, you don't have to put
them out to pastor. There will be digital to analog convertors available
for roughly $50 per and the government will offer vouchers available soon
valued at $40. so, consumers who want to use analog televisions can do so.
In addition, if you already have cable or satellite, you're already set,
because their server will convert from analog to digital for you.

In the community where I live we no longer have am radio, an once the
convergence to high definition television takes place I will have yet a
 few
more boat anchors to put out on the curb to be picked up by the recycling
people, and then there are the computers. I am now on my third desktop,
 and
that too will eventually meet its maker. . .

 High Bob,
I happen to agree with you.
A little more then 22 years ago, I bought a portable stereo that was AM
 stereo able.
Down here in Lake City Florida, none of the stations were transmitting
 AM
 stereo signals.
But when I left Florida and went to Georgia, this is when I was able to
 pick
up AM stereo stations on that unit.
That thing cost me a little more then $450.
After going through that, I said to myself, never again will I do
 that.
I've got nothing against HD radio, I just don't thank it's ready for
 prime
 time.
If I end up with an HD radio, it would be because someone gave it to me.
But in the mean while, I will stick with what I have.
Serious here at the house, XM at the office.

I wouldn't waist my money on HD radio at this time, as HD radio is still
in
the experimental stages of its development. There are still a number of
technical issues that have to be ironed out. In Canada, for an example
 HD
licences for broadcasters are issued conditionally on an experimental
 basis
only. If I had my druthers I would purchase a satellite radio before
 going
HD. When was the last time that you heard an ad on television saying
 that
the latest model of a given car comes complete with an HD radio? We all
 know
what happened to am stereo,it appeared to be a good idea at the time,
however the manufacturers of radio receivers failed to come through
 with
 the
goods, and the system failed. Another example was the Sony beta system,
 as
the public showed favour towards the VHS cassette. Now we are faced
 with
another dilemma, blue ray up against yet another competitive format. I
 have
had a satelite radio for almost two years now, and frankly would not
 switch
back. Some times it is best to sit on the sidelines for awhile until
 such
 time that
all of the technical bugs of a given system are ironed out.

Hi,
I just went to sirius.com and utilized the 3 day free trial using their media
player. The site is fully accessible as well as the player. You have to hit a
link that announces a code you must submit to get the free trial.
Before doing so, click on free trial and fill out form fields. they will then
send you a password via email. then go back to player page and enter user name,
which is your email address, followed by the given password, followed by the
announced code, which is a five digit number. Listen carefully, because voice
spoken is soft.

I'm not sure about the sound quality, but I am a talk radio junky, so it will
suffice. I had my dishnetwork on the same Sirius channel and it sounds better
via dish than online.
I didn't read pricing information as of yet.

hope this info is useful for some...

I don't know how much Radio Shack is charging, but it's likely to be in the
range of $200-$250. I should be clearer about the radio's limitations, based
on the model I bought about two years ago. It's terrible on AM, so you'd buy
it only for FM. Also, there are five-second delays any time you switch to an
HD broadcaster, as I believe is standard with HD. However, I also find the
radio doesn't come up right away when I turn it on, and very occasionally
won't come up at all until I unplug the AC adaptor and reconnect it to the
outlet. I have another radio right next to it for the times I want immediate
reception, such as a news broadcast at the top of the hour. But for me, the
pure clarity of the Boston Acoustics HD's musical sound outweighs its
 eccentricities.

To purchase or read reviews of HD component tuners, I would turn to C Crane,
an online and phone-order company that is responsive to queries from
 visually impaired customers:

stations are playing in your area. you can find this out from the IBicquity

one station broadcasting in HD. I think you are better off with satellite

RE: Looking for earbud suggestions

2008-01-11 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi,
I've got a few pair in mind and I think all three come with tips of different
sizes:
Bose - $99 a pair sound great, but a bit pricy,
JVC has a great pair that sound great, but cannot remember price,
and audio tecnica are also great sounding, but once again, cannot remember
price.

You can go to JR.com and view ear buds and compare the specs.

FYI:
sensitivty number implies loudness level meaning less volume to drive the sound.
I have a pair of JVC noise cancellation full over the ear headphones that have
a sensitivity of 104 decibals; the audio tecnicas have a sensitivity scale
twice that meaning they drive sound much easier; and I don't remember
sensitivity of bose.
frequency level is the scale of low and high range sound - meaning the loer
number is that of bass response and higher number is that of treble response;
greater the range (e.g. 20 to 2000+) will give greatest amount of sounds from
the music being played.

and lower ohms level for quality of sound.

that is just a brief synopsis in simplest language. Hope not too much info. I
only offered the suggested site, because their prices are excellent and it
allows for comparison purposes. circuit City and crutchfield also allows for
comparisons, but their pricing is that of the MSRP. Bose pricing is the same
everywhere, because they don't allow vendors to discount their products.

Hi, Lynn. I have the same problem, so I was happy to find earbuds made by
Phillips. I don't remember the model number, but I think that's what come
with the Braille+ made by the American Printing House for the blind. I'll
try and find that info out for you, if you like, or you can probably just
google earbuds made by Phillips. What I like about them is that they have
little covers on the buds themselves that I think are meant to make the buds
more comfortable. My ear canals are too small for most earbuds, but these
fit gently and snugly into my ears. I actually try not to wear earbuds too
often uness I'm traveling, because I know they really aren't so good for you
hearing. But these are pretty cool, and they don't sound so bad, either.

Hi everyone. There are a lot of things about me that are, well, just plain
weird. One of those weirdnesses is that I have had the extreme misfortune
to have been born with ear canals that seem to want to spit out earbuds.
 I
can't seem to keep the darned things in, and frankly, they drive me
 insane,
but my 16-year-old nephew tells me I'm committing a terrible fashion faux
pas by wearing my old clunky, but much more comfortable and in my humble
opinion much better-sounding, headphones that I used with my old portable
 stereo.

I'm hoping you guys can recommend a good brand of earbuds. I typically
 have
been using the ones that come with whatever digital player I buy, but I'm
not satisfied with them anyway, not just because they are constantly
 falling
out of my ears, but also because they sound terrible.

 Thanks again for any insights.

RE: connecting my portable stereo to my computerusingtheauxiliaryjacks?

2008-01-09 Thread Cornell Ligon

absolutely it can...
as a child when I had a tv with headphone jack, I ran into my cheap first
stereo via that jack... it's just a matter of tweeking the volume control to
avoid hiss noise from being too low or annoying distortion from volume being
too loud.

type of quality cable is probably most important under this circumstance.
About a year ago, I had a 3.5 mm mini single male on one end and 2 rca tips on
other end, which I ran from my MP3 player or portable cassette deck into my
home theater/HIFI - later using that same cord to run from my PC to the stereo.

True, can't argue with that. However, if a good mixer is hooked up between

 can be reduced, can't it?

 Hello Kulvinder,
That's what I told Randy earlier this morning.
If those jacks are line out, then you can hook it up to your computer's
 sound card without any problem.
But if they happen to be line in, then the only option is using the
 headphone jack.
But however, that won't work to well for you.
 You will get amplifier noise.
It will distort especially if the volume is turned up way to high.

Yeh, sorry about that, what you need to do is connect your hifi with
line-out sockets if you have them on the back of the hifi, that is if you
want to have the audio from the hifi to go to the computer.

Auxillery jacks are input only. they are there in case you wish to run
 something
like a second tape deck or cd player through the system. You could for
 instance run
a line from your speaker out on your computer to the auxillery and hav the
 audio from
the computer go through the stereo.

Also, presumably I should add some silence to the end of each track? These
are recordings I've made from the radio and have chopped off the unnecessary
ends; so do I need to put some silence at the end of each track so they
don't all play as one long sound in a CD player?

multi-channel connection

2007-12-11 Thread Cornell Ligon
Hi All,
I want to get the best sound from my PC, which I use for DVDs ran into my home
theater. I see there is a multi-channel connection as well as digital coaxial
and optic digital.
I'm currently running the optic digital line into my system, but wonder if
multi-channel analog wil give better results when playing DVDs, WMA files
and/or MP3 files through my stereo?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

I can't seem to download their download manager because I can't seem to

Bless you, Cornell. Finally got this thing to work with your help!

Now, could someone tell me how to get to the text when you see those stupid
clickable on mouse over messages? I've tried using that jawskey plus v to
get to where those choices are that I thought would allow you to click on
those mouse over announcements, but I can't make hide nor hair out of what
to do. I realize this may not quite be an audio question, but it may indeed
be, given how often that clickable on mouse over shows up on websites these
 days.

RE: Pogo - Digital audio recording systems

Hi George,
It's okay, but only has 256 mb storage with 1 gig expansion slot or mini sd
slot. It's pretty easy to use for standard play, adding and deleting radio
stations, but I haven't figured out how to use timer for radio programs...
The internal harddrive is rather small at 256 or 128 mb, and the expansion slot
will only accept 1 gig, but I did see where someone used 2 gig mini on it...

Hi Tyler,
do you have any suggestions, tips or shortcuts for new users of the site?

320 KBPS sounds great. I listen to one of my locals here in Greater

sounded like robotics or something...

hello

If you want to customize your station, go to:

http://www.bluebeat.com

Its free, its great, and I love it. Don't get me wrong, launchcast is great
too, but you can't beat 320 kbps. If you don't want to customize your
station, simply go to killer playlists or time machine, and choose from
about 100 genres, ranging from country to just plain wierd, in all aeras of
time from the 1920s onwards, if you so desire. Just download the plug in for
windows media player, set up an acount and your all ready to go. I live in
canada, therefore, can't make my own station due to copyright, however, this
sure as heck doesn't make it a less enjoyable experience, as there are about
a million stations to choose from, not to mention you can browse by artists,
album etc, genre, too. Adding songs to your crate or station as you so
choose. I absolutely love it- and hope you do, too!

Blue beat loves hearing from us blind users- I e-mailed them about an
accessibility on there website, and got a prompt response, asking me what
they could do to fix the problem.

I can't say enough about how unknown this website is, how nobody knows about
it. Its one of the best, and it makes launchcast look bad in comparison.
But, I'm on dialup, so its sort of dificult for me to get in there, the
minimum bitrate is 160, so I recommend having a dsl or higher connection
speed, I'm getting high speed tomorrow, so if you need more help, I'll be
happy to add more detailed instructions about things.

hope that helps,
Tyler

  Hello to the list.
I have joined the Yahoo! LaunchCast Plus service and it seems like
there's
  a

great variety of high quality stations and formats from which to choose.
When you call up the entire list of stations, even though they're not
identified as links using Jaws, you can still press Enter on any given
station to launch it, and it plays just fine.
You can even save the station to your Favorites list and launch it that
  way
  very quickly.

Apparently, it is possible to customize your personal station to include
artists and genres from specific formats. I'm wondering if anyone has
figured out how to do this?
I have been going round and round in circles on these pages but have not
  figured this out just yet.
If anyone has successfully done this, perhaps you could let me know how
  you
  accomplished it.
  Thanks a lot.

Re: Where can I find drivers for my soundcard? I don't have them.

2007-09-27 Thread Cornell Ligon

Hi,
Crucial.com has a scanner that goes through your machine to check for memory
compatibility. When I ran mine through to see how much it would cost for
additional memory, the results gave me my video card type and memory, mother
board type, memory type and audio card type.

Just go to their site as noted above, skim through the homepage and allow it
to scan your system. That will avoid having to go into the box itself and
allow you to go to the homepage of the audio card to seek drivers.
Alternatively, it may be listed under hardware section of My Computer
properties and you can locate it and update drivers that way as well.

Best Regards,
Cornell

RE: sharp stereos

I agree. While I perceive Sharp as a great line of electronics as a whole, I
did have one of the best tape decks ever made with features that put tape
quality like no other I've seen.
However, that was 18 years ago and I know longer have that deck.
You just have to research the products of interest and make an educated
guess, but probably not wise to condemn their entire line of products.
although I did have the same feelings about Panasonic after terrible
experiences with their cordless phones and another smaller appliance.../

I had my first experience with a Sharp product some 35 years ago. A five
inch reel to reel tape recorder and it lasted fifteen years. I think you
have to consider that Sharp wouldn't still be around if they were worse
than the competition. Like e very other manufacturer, they have cheap and w
expensive product lines, good and bad years along with products which do and
don't hold up well. I'd look at review sites for up to date opinions and go
with them while praying.

If it is an integrated stereo system you intend buying then Sharp is as

2007-09-07 Thread Cornell Ligon
Hi,
Yes, it's fully accessible as someone noted - even versions 10 and 11... I'm
using version 11 and JFW 6.2 with no problems.
also, as a side note, if you're primarily interseted in quality and will
only playback using the comp, try ripping in WMA format. It sounds beter
than MP3, at least to me it does...

   Hi.

Windows media player has error correction so be sure to set it if you're
using this program to rip audio CD's. It will rip much more slowly when
this is enabled but you will get excellent results.

To set the error correction flag,
go to tools, options and locate the audio tab. Press enter on the
properties button for your CD/DVD drives and then check the checkboxes to
   set error correction on.

The CD transport in your computer is key to getting good results. As
mentioned, EAC will scan until it finds 2 close matches in extracted WAV
forms but that doesn't mean that it's perfect as if your CD transport
isn't
great then you'll get some very close imperfect WAV files and it'll have
just taken you longer to get there.

I've found laptops have the best CD transports as they tend to have a
raised
middle onto which you can press the CD and have it held firmly. CD
transports I've seen on desktops have been quite flimsy at times and the
disc can slide about when spinning. This is a great way to generate lots
of
jitter, particularly on the latter tracks which are on the outside of the
disc and so are therefore being rocked around a lot more than the inner
   tracks on a flimsy transport.

   Regards.

   Kevin

Does winamp, windows media, or ITunes have error correction, wave form

Not necessarily. CDEX doesn't have error correction and wave form
comparison, rescanning the same track two dozen times. EAC can often
salvage a scratched disc. there is much discussion on the Internet
comparing the two programs, check it out.

if you really want the highest quality rips possible, use Exact
Audio
  copy
with the Lame extreme preset. With the current version of Lame,
  variable
bit rates with joint stereo deliver the extra fullness and richness
when
  it
is needed. EAC does offer a preset for 320 CBR, but the developer
calls
   this setting insane.

EAC, unlike CDEX, scans each track, looking for two exactly
identical
  wave
forms or the closest exact match possible. It repeatedly scans a
tract,
dozens of times if needed, before ripping it. CDEX does not
perform
  this

If you want the best rips in town, use EAC. It takes longer to
learn,
  but
the rips sound really great. CDEX is easy to use and I still rip
audio
books with it. For industrial strength music output, I use EAC.

Hi, Since the subject of TV tuner cards have come up on this list I'd
like to know whether you can buy a Tv tuner card if you have a lap top
computer. Someone told me that you couldn't get one if you had a lap
top computer. I've got a friend who has a lap top and would be
interested in buying a Tv card tuner if it is possible to buy one
using a lap top. If it is possible to buy a Tv card for a lap top I'd
be interested in finding out which one would be the best to buy.
Thanks.

soundblaster is probably the most popular sound card app out, so can find at
almost all computer stores. You can go to their Creative labs websie and
read more info, r even order one from them. they often have big sales going

  High once again Michael,
You can use an off the shelf sound card like the ones made by Sound
  Blaster.
They just plug right in to one of the slots on the mother board.
All you have to do after that is lode in the software CD that came with
  it,
  and you're all sat!
Try that and see if that solves your problem.

Re: Lossless

2007-08-01 Thread Cornell Ligon
Hi,
you can go into tools on the media player and move down to enhancements
submenu. if it's on your machine, select audio converter. Alternatively, you
can open start menu, all programs and select digital media enhancements from
that point, which should have the audio converter there.
If neither shows it, you can probably go to microsoft's website to search
for an add in. I'm not sure what operating system you're using, but I have
Media Center 2005 XP running wmp 11.

another way is to open file folder with music you'd like to convert and
choose convert from tools that way as well.

Hello Cornell!

The Cingular 8525 does have a memory card slot for more storage, but I am
not sure how, or if, one could add memory to the phone. That's probably
something one would have to take into a shop for I suppose, but I don't
know. How does your wife add memory to her T-Mobile Phone? It it a
software thing or must one insert memory (RAM) sticks? My Windows Media
does play some things (movie clips and songs from stuff from the mobile
phone system), but nothing I generate, like my web site stuff or radio
stations (including ACB Radio). During a demo of this phone on a blog and
Code Factory, the structor played something from a radio station and an MP3,
but he didn't mention anything about memory. Maybe you ca n shed some light
on this issue for me. I am not that familiar with memory adding on a PDA,
but would like to learn about it.

thanks very much for your assistance and info.

My wife's PDA phone uses mini sd card to expand her usability, but she

you should be able to get basic information from them or see if you can

Hi Adrian,
You may want to tinker around with it, such as opening the player from the
desktop, then playing the file and see if the rwind feature works that way.
I used it earlier by simply selecting a track from the “My Music” folder,
and I was able to rewind that way. I’m not sure about bookmarks, because
I’ve never used them.

BTW: do you know how to select a track for ripping, burning or sync? I’ve
tried that using the space bar as well as the enter key and it still says
‘unselected’ when moving cursor through tracks…

Audigy digital output

Hi all,
I just hook my pc into my home theater system and televisoin. I am using
Creative Audigy 1z audio card, which has a digital in and out for playback
and recording.
when I hook up an RCA cord with left and right on one end and a single male
3.5mm plug on the other end plugged into the speakers out of my computer; I
have no problem. However, I want to use the digital lines in and out for
superior sound quality going into my system. I went into the sound advanced
features and checked the box that says digital, but got no sound, so
reverted my setting back to the initial way I described in this email.

Any ideas of what's going wrong or what I've done wrong? thanks in advance.
