Re: Goldwave settings question

2012-09-27 Thread Dave Bahr
it doesn't matter if you go into the setting dialog or not, btw it's the
effects menu. If you want to select the whole file, then yes, you'll
have to do a select all. There is also the trim feature which I haven't
played with. that's not so helpful, but maybe the developer could add an
option to play the file forwards or backwards depending on the option
selected in the play section of the control properties. you should ask
him if that's what you're thinking. hth

Subject: Goldwave settings question

I'm running Goldwave 5.67 on a Win 7 64-bit desktop.

In older versions of Gold Wave, if a file was open, the user could hit
F5 and the file would begin to play in reverse completely from the end to
the beginning. I found this especially useful in situations where the
initial file length exceeds the actual length of the recorded material. In
5.67, however, when one presses the F5 rewind key, the file rewinds only for
a few seconds and then stops.

Please tell me what if anything I can do to change this behavior so that the
file will play in reverse until I choose to stop it.

Remember, I am not talking about going into the settings to reverse the
track.

Thanks.

Not really. If you have a mobile device, you will have better luck
going that route. You have to memorize where stuff is on that. The

subsonic music streamer

2012-06-05 Thread Dave Bahr
Hi, has anyone had any success with the subsonic music streamer? It's
nice because it doesn't upload your music to a cloud or website, it just
takes it from your pc. But when I tried the thing with window-eyes, it
didn't really work. I'm guessing it's java or some other gui-based

I found an interesting program/driver combination over on another list.
It is basically a virtual audio card. It allows you to basically do what
Stereo Mix could offer in XP, but perhaps more. This is especially
useful for Vista and later users, or XP users whose sound card does not
support Stereo Mix. Free trial with trial noise, whatever that is,
added as part of the evaluation's limitations, available at
www.virtualaudiostreaming.net. The program is called Virtual Audio
Streaming.

you might just have the speed slider set too high. if you go into the
control window there will be a group box labeled speed, try using the up

embarcadero custom controls and goldwave

2012-01-16 Thread Dave bahr

Hi list,

I have found out that the custom control that goldwave uses for its
keyboard manager is made by embarcadero. I'm wondering if anyone has had
experience dealing with this company's development tools and visual
component library user interfaces? It appears that goldwave is made up
of these components, and it seems that accessability with window-eyes in
particular is difficult with the interface. Not impossible, but
difficult. My guess then is this is the reason that some controls are
not readable just by tabbing through the dialogues, but have to be read
in conjunction with the mouse cursor which I think gets kind of confusing.

Any thoughts on this one?

 Hello,

Under the menu bar, you can read the length and, when the track is running,
how much data has been played in minutes and seconds. Maybe even hours, as
well. can you hear whether the track is stereo or Mono?

I think that info is located at the bottom of the sound window.

Good luck,

ok, what are you using now? if it's nvda, I don't know the mouse keys
for it. Kinda slammed with school, but...hmmm, it's not reading the
whole screen, no. Is it possible that the icons of another program are
blocking that window? Or could it be that the meter graphs are too large
for the mouse to move down? Would you be able to have a sighted person
look at it and tell you where your cursor is when you hit what the
reader thinks is the bottom of the screen? if you are recording, you'll
see something like, recording, 44.100hz. stereo, length, size. At
least, that's what I think it says, doing that one from memory. I'm
wondering if it's possible to get this in some sort of popup edit box,
what do others think of that? if necessary, one could do a passthrough
aka bypass key to execute the hotkey.

The power is grounded on all three-pronged plugs. I have an internal

all sata 2 drives, 2 500 gb drives and a 1.5 tb drive. The two 500 gb
drives are a few years old, they make more noise than the 1.5 tb
drive. The catch is that one of them is my main drive for program
files and the like, so I don't want to put it in an enclosure. The
other two could be taken out and enclosed.

My main concern is editting, the feedback won't get through to the
digital transfers, but I'm not sure if I can deal with this high
pitched noise, it's a high b-flat. I'm wondering if anyone has run
into this and what a good solution might be?

Field names and field data was GoldWave not speaking status information

2011-12-31 Thread Dave bahr
I've alerted Chris, the developer, to the issue of headings not being
spoken, or that's what I'm calling them, I mean the field name, really.
But it seems as if the field data isn't being spoken either for jaws
users? I have the same issue at times with the marker setting dialogue
as a window-eyes user; sometimes the start and end markers don't read
and I have to copy the line to a notepad file. That's been happening
less and less, but I am curious to know if it's a cross-screen reader
phinominon. So, this is an appeal for both jfw and we users to please
let me know if they've had the same problem. Just because I think i've
confused myself I'm going to rehash this in a numbered order. Bear with
me please. The following are the things I am understanding are not being
read by gw at this time, or at least not being read consistantly.

1. the data within fields, primarily edit boxes in the time marker
dialogue for me,
2. the status? of information in these edit boxes or relating to the
buttons not speaking properly in the jaws scripts, do I have that sort
of right?
3. The indication of the data to be put into a combo or edit box. I am
noticing this with the tone meter dialogue where I see a combo box with
numbers in it but I'm not sure what they signify unless I use the mouse
keys. It is faster to tab through the dialogues, but I'm not sure how to
fix this in window-eyes. I am going to post to the gwmicro-info list to
see if people have suggestions for this one so I can explain it to the
developer of goldwave.

Feel free to correct me on any of this, and even tell me if I'm flatout
wrong. I just want to help make this program the most accessible sound
editor out there because it has been on that path for some time now.
This Chris guy also seems to have his heart in the right place as far as
listening to suggestions from me about accessability. And I don't have
to be the only mediator either, it would be nice to have more people
email him on the accessability front.

apologies for the longwinded message, but I wanted to spell out what I
thought were the primary concerns. I'd rather give too much info than
not enough.

Hi Dave.

Thanks for all this. yes, you're right...GW definitely has done
more than any other sound editor to make their programme work well
for those of us who don't use the screen.

I think you're mostly right with all this stuff. What I'm going to
do later on is see if I can revert to 5.57, which is the last
version I remember using that gave a lot of voice feedback and
seemed well integrated with the scripts. I'll uninstall the scripts
so I can see exactly how much help they were giving us. The person
who created the scripts put in a lot of keyboard commands to read
status information. For example:
To read the selected channel press Alt+Shift+C.
To say the name of the open sound file press alt+shift+o.
To say the open file's format press alt+shift+i.
To report which GoldWave control is active press alt+shift+a.
To say the total playing time of a sound file press Alt+Shift+T.
To say the elapsed time while playing press Alt+shift+e.
To say the time location of the start marker press alt+Shift+s.
To say the time of the finish marker press alt+shift+f.
To say the duration of the selection press Alt+Shift+D.
To say the current zoom level, Press Alt+Shift+Z

Needless to say some of this was pretty useful. I seem to remember
certain cases where start and finish marker positions were spoken
automatically. As mentioned, the name of the current file is no
longer even read when you first move focus to Golwave, or switch
from one file to another. Copying and pasting of course does
actually work, but jaws seems to believe that there is nothing on
the clipboard and so, consequentially, nothing to paste.

Seems that the programme may work better with Window Eyes. I was
going to ask you how you'd been making out, since you seem to have
had considerable success with the latest versions, but forgot that
you were using W. Eyes. I of course have heard that Window Eyes
doesn't require as much scripting and addictional tweaking as JAWS
sometimes does in order to work most efficiently with certain
programmes.

Hello everyone.

I recently obtained GoldWave 5.61. I'm definitely pleased with
what seem to be a bunch of new accessibility-related features,
though I haven't had a chance to try much yet. At any rate, I used
to get plenty of feedback messages from the programme, which would
speak the name of the file that was open if I, for example,
alt-tabbed over to the goldwave window, or used alt-f6 to switch
between files. I could also get JAWS to speak the name of the file
by hitting alt-shift-o, the file format, cursor position, markers,
etc. I noticed I was having some problems with the scripts, which
would seem to hang the programme whenever I hit insert-h or used
some other commands. So, I searched around and realised I wasn't
using the most up-to-date version. The laatest I found was 1.60.
Installed these, and I'm still getting very little voice feedback,
though there doesn't seem to be any more hanging issue. Everything
in the programme seems to work fine, but if I select a piece of
sound from
a file, and copy it to the clipboard, jaws will say nothing

from, but maybe they don't have to have headers and are context
sensative. So the short answer is, no I haven't had time to play with
it. Seems pretty usable though from the brief overview I gave it the
other day. If you're a window-eyes user, it's important to reclass the
custom controls in the meter window of the control properties so that
they are buttons, saves you a keystroke or two.

Tim. To which time are your referring? Occasionally I have issues where

audio meter in goldwave was goldwave version 5.65 is now available

2011-12-07 Thread Dave bahr
Alright Gang, I see how the meter works and it should do what we're
aiming for. Below I have pasted the help section on the tone meter, but
I need to say something first about the properties button. I use
window-eyes and had to reclass the custom control as it is, according to
the class box, an image button. Once you click button for the class, all
of the buttons show up properly as properties buttons. I'm not a jfw
user but I assume there is similar behavior? If you're not sure how to
do it, routing your pointer to the control just after the tone meter
selection combo box and left clicking will get you into the windows for
each meter to be set.

And now, as promised, here is the help page for the tone meter. I'm
having a bit of trouble with some of the combo boxes to read their
titles, but I haven't as yet played with this tone meter as I write
this. Please don't hesitate to email me offlist and I can pass
suggestions on to the developer.

Tone Meter Properties
Location: Right-click, Properties command on Tone Meter visual in
Control
 window
The Tone Meter
visual plays a tone and displays a solid colour based on the peak
amplitude of the

waveform.
Shared
playback quality must be selected to allow the visual to generate tones.
The properties include settings for four tiered tones. Each tone has a
different
trigger level, frequency, waveform, and colour. The level value sets the
upper limit
to trigger the tone. The tone is used only if the peak amplitude is
below or equal
to the given level. If the peak is above that level, then a tone with a
higher level
is used. Each level must be higher than the previous level, so the
trigger for level

2 must be greater than the trigger for level 1, etc.
Tones are played at a fixed interval. Tone interval
changes the time between tones. By default a tone sounds once a second.
Duration sets how long the tone plays. Volume
changes the volume of the tone.
Sound tone only when Scroll Lock key is on
provides a quick way to turn on and off the tone by using the Scroll
Lock key on

the keyboard as a toggle switch.

Re: Removing the Headings on an MP3 File

2011-12-07 Thread Dave bahr
you can use the auto trim feature in goldwave to trim out the silences.
Just specify how long you want things to be in seconds, then the db
threshold of the silence, that takes some trial and error, and then
wehther you want the leading or trailing silences to be removed, or
both. Sounds complex but if you have audio from the same source, once
you get the initial file set up you can just use those parameters on
each one, or you can even do a batch run on the files with the
parameters you set. Make sense?

that is true, it might remove that silence, but wouldn't the code just
call for looking at the beginning and ending of the file? As for cds,
yeah that's just assumed you want the gaps, itunes has this annoying
habit of trying to determine gapless playback information, which takes
forever and I haven't had a chance to figure out how to disable that check.

this behavior when playing files from play lists but can't tell you
for certain where to check. Clearly if the silences are part of the
MP3 file, Dave's suggestion will work, although it might remove
silence that you don't intend to remove.

Re: another goldwave questions about doplar and other effects

2011-12-07 Thread Dave bahr
hi there. Yeah the reverb and envelope graphs and all that have points
associated with them. Basically the only way to figure them out is to
just listen and see how the sound is while modifying the effects if you
have a longer file, or just applying them and seeing how they sound.
Also, the manual is pretty concise and descriptive in its explanation of
what the boxes mean. I'm sorry, that's probably not the answer you were
looking for; kinda commone sense I guess.

Hi. It sounds like this is a windows folder options as opposed to goldwave
itself. When you go to a folder of files with this problem, and before u use

any arrow keys to look at the file list, hit your aplication key and a
context menu will pop up. There should be a sort by or arrange icons
submenu. Look in this submenu and see what is checked. Sometimes just going
to the name option and hitting enter will correct this.
Let me know how that goes!

Hello everyone, I am using Goldwave 5.58. In some folders, in the open
dialog, it displays the items backwards, so the file which has the last
letter in the alphabet is at the top. How can I get it to stop doing this?
It only does this with certain folders. Thank you.

realtime software effects processor

2011-10-22 Thread Dave Bahr

Hi list,

does anyone know of a good realtime effects processor that's software
based? I don't have the funds or physical space for a piece of hardware.
I can't use max msp which is all gui based. Any suggestions? looking for
pitch shifts, phasing, flanging, the sorts of things you can do in
goldwave but in realtime.

I'm using a Creative sound blaster X-FI sound card.

I want to connect a Mackie 802 mixer to the sound card.

I know there are three rows of two sockets on this card.

Does anyone know which is the line in and line out sockets on this card?

Sorry, I just don't have a pair of eyes around at the mo to check.

it is both. you can get a pogoplug hardware, but I think, from the
description I could tell, it's pretty visual or completely inaccessible.
However, I got the software to work on one computer and can't on the
other, the laptop isn't connecting right nor is it accessible for some
reason. I could get it to work on my desktop, not sure if it's a scripts
thing with window-eyes or what, haven't had time to troubleshoot between
the two comps. All I want to do is stream media from one comp to
another, and this looks like the ticket, but if I can't get it to work

Hi Steve,

I'm with you on the apple thing. Shrugs, drm, to hell with it I say.

Here's the strange thing about switching soundcards with window-eyes.
When I switched the card from my internal one to my wireless headset and
had configured goldwave, or maybe it was total recorder, to record with
the internal one, I still got window-eyes coming through as if it had
never been switched over to that wireless headset. I can try again, but

one can redirect the output of the version of Eloquence that comes with
Window-Eyes to a different sound card as I believe one can with JFW's version
of Eloquence. This does not deal with Windows 7 sounds, though. While I
am a long-time Windows user, I am definitely open to the fact that the Mac does
some things better. However, there is a tendency for people to say Apple
is better but not specifically why. While I don't claim to have inside
information, some of what I've read and heard leads me to believe that some of
the
problems we have with capturing streams in Windows 7 arises from Microsoft's
commitment to digital rights management and their protection of the intent of
a content provider. I suspect that there will be pressure on Apple as well to
implement safeguards that will make it more difficult to record just any stream.
Time will tell, I guess.

Best regards,

Steve Jacobson

Hi all. I'm looking to do some internet radio broadcasting and, having

microphone sound horrible (muffled, buzzing noise behind vocals, popping
when turned on/off, etc), I'm looking for a suitable and accessible

also like to have the option of plugging headphones into it so that I can
hear the results of my work as it happens, and features such as being able
to use more than one channel at once (such as talking over the start/end of
a track) are also very important. Unfortunately I'm very short of space, so
I need something which has good quality output but which is as compact as
possible. I know this is quite a specific set of requirements, but if
anyone knows of such a model which is accessible for use by someone with
total sight loss (no issues with seeing lights showing feedback etc), I'd be
grateful to hear details. I'd also appreciate advice on any adaptors which
I might need to help me plug 3.5 mm jacks and an XLR microphone into such a
machine, as this is my first time of exploring this area of production.

Many thanks in advance for any help and advice, Danny

yeah that's what i figured. I have a plan, it's kinda crude but it will
work. I'm going to get the stream going and then the recorder, or the
reverse it really doesn't matter, then I'm going to exit my screen
reader and leave the stream recording, setting goldwave to record for 2
hours and 3 minutes, the archived stream is 2 hours long. It's not
ideal, i know, because the quality isn't going to be perfect, but the
music will be there. The site I want to record from has changed their
archiving method from windows media .asx playlist files to what looks
like an embeded javascript player. I have firefox and so far haven't
found anything that can record an audio stream just in firefox. there's
this freecorder add on that I installed but it doesn't look accessible.
any thoughts on this? again, it's a crude plan but I don't know enough
java, I know no java programming, I just looked at the source of the
page of the media player.

Subject: streaming music from home computer to laptop

Hi gang,

I've probably asked this before, but I'm wondering what I could do to
access my music library from my laptop to stream the music remotely.
Is there some sort of server type application I could get? FTP isn't
really an option as I can't forward a port from this desktop, it's on
a university network. It would be nice to copy music somehow, but if I
can stream it, that would work too. This is new territory for me so if
I haven't provided enough info, please let me know.

There is a script on the GW site called QT support or

The best thing I can tell you is to go through the menus (sometimes a
given item will tell you the shortcut key) for example, I can tell you
that to get to the favorites list, the shortcut key is alt-a. When
you first open Tapin Radio it'll say edit (this is where you type
in a station that you may be looking for) then tab once and you'll see
the list of results it has found! Enter on the one you want and the
station should begin to play! If, in the future, you want to find that
station again, while the station is still playing, go to favorites
as described earlier and the first thing is add to favorites. Once
there, hit enter and your station will be saved there. From this
point on, whenever you want to bring that station up again, go to your
favorites list and the station will be there! Hope I've explained
all that correctly; if not, I'm sure someone can probably do better
than I!

Re: powered desktop speakers

2011-08-17 Thread Dave Bahr
Yep, stick to brands but always listen to others. Some brands, like
everything in electronics, you pay for the name more than the quality of
the product. The adam audio a7x speakers sound fantastic with choral
music and acoustic stuff, I played Eric Witacre's light and gold cd
recorded last year to test the things and they blew my mind, and that
was without a sub. I also played the first movement of Brahms's first
symphony, not all of it, but the first intro before the sonata form
starts and the end of the thing with those fantastic triplets. The highs
sounded good, some say they don't sound natural, ok one person said
that, but I felt I was listening to the thing live.

response, not any sort of pre-designed emphasis of the lows or highs.
I don't have experience with any of those systems, I do have a bose

Yes I realize that they are kind of pricy. The BW system is by far

It's interesting that we are seeing the companies with proven records in the
manufacture of speakers entering the market. It seems that even the
companies known for high quality hifi equipment are realising thatpeople
are using their pcs more and more for listening to music.

What I have heard also though is that these better kinds of desktop speakers
are not very forgiving when it comes to lower bitrate encodings.

All I want is a pleasant sounding system that will not need me to mortgage
my soul for the cost. Although I fully realise that whatever I will get
will cost somewhat more than the speakers you will see advertised in stores
with computers being sold.

I do have a high quality Imagic USB sound card to use as a DAC. The thing
is about 8 years old and so are the drivers but I am sure there is nothing
wrong with the sound quality.

studio monitor purchase

2011-08-06 Thread Dave Bahr

Hi folks,

I'm looking for a pair of studio monitors, or monitors that can deliver
me a flat frequency response, no enhancement of the frequencies so that
I can hear the original mix as it was done, for restoration and
mastering purchases. I have it narrowed down to two, maybe 3, I'll put
all three options below, was wondering what sorts of systems people had
and why, whether active or passive, what sort of config they had, room
size and setup, things of that nature. I realize that the bottom line
comes down to what the individual sees as the ideal setup. I haven't
listened to any of them and will of course do so before making my final
decision.

1. the neumann kh 120

2. adam audio, a7x

3. the maybe. the blue sky one 2.1 system.

I've been talking to the folks at

www.vintageking.com

and they sell all three setups, the blue sky they weren't too keen on
and the adam audio one sounded, according, to this guy, not as natural
as the neumann speakers.

Re: studio monitor purchase

2011-08-06 Thread Dave Bahr
that's true, they are kind of one in the same in my mind for what I'm
doing. that is, to make the sound as natural as I can is to hear the
detail that wil aproximate what I think the original may sound like.
That's one way to look at it. The other is to say that you want to hear
the mix as the mixer intended it, but they kind of overlap too. Am I
reading your message right at all?

Dave,

I don't know exactly what kind of restoring you are thinking of doing, but one
thing I will throw into the mix is that your
goal probably isn't going to be to get the most natural sound from any set of
speakers, it is probably going to be to
make the sound as close to the original as you can. That means that what is
most important is that your speakers can
reproduce sound with enough detail so you can hear subtle changes you might be
introducing when you apply noise
reduction and such. . Of course, if you are making recordings, then the need
is different as you will be modifying the
sound to make it sound best and it is much more subjective.

Best regards,

Re: recording from internet radio

2011-07-31 Thread Dave Bahr
it's a bit tricky to use, but hidownload platinum might do that. It's a
strange interface and requires the mouse cursor a lot, there is also sdp
downloader which is easier to use but I think only works with .asf
streams, at least that's what I use it for. Those streams are archived
though so they start and end in the alotted time. Oh wait! again, kind
of tricky to use, but dar.fm does record shows like you want, it's just
hard, or it was when I set up the thing, to get it to record the right
day and time. It kept messing up all the times I had given it because I
didn't know what time zone it was basing the times out of. So I stopped
using it, but it's been a few months so maybe that's changed.

I hope those help you to get on the right track,

Total Recorder will do this. It has a scheduler that will start and
stop the web transmision, it can even turn off your PC when the
recording is done if you prefer. And it's very accessible. However,
it's not free. And, in Vista or 7, unless you can use background
recording, you will need to run it through a 2nd sound card, or shut
down your screen reader because there's no way for Total Recorder to
record the radio station without also recording your screen reader.
But if you're using XP, you're good to go. - Original Message

I believe the Soft Pack is priced at about $40. However, it is
possible to convert files to MP3 through a more convoluted process.
Without the Soft Pack, all note files will be recorded in that .GP
format. With the free HumanWare Companion software, it is easy to
convert .GP files to .WAV files. From there, you can use GoldWave or
another application to convert to MP3. As I said, convoluted. Me, I'm
happy to convert from .GP to .WAV, so the HumanWare Companion is a
boon. You need the latest version of that software.

yeah which is rediculous. You'd think that with all the other fancy

I do appologize if this is not quite appropriate for this list, but I
don't know who else to ask. Several months ago I bought a Harry
Potter DVD that I thought would have audiodescription. It was my
(apparently wrong) understanding that all those films would have
audiodescription. Either we can't find it on the DVD or it's just not
there. I live in the U.S. and was using Amazonddcom to buy it. When I
googled Deathly Hallows Part 1 audiodescription, the first thing that
came up was from amazonddco. Does this mean you can only get the
audiodescribed version from the UK? I do have a lovely,Mp-3 copy of
this film but do want the physical DVD so that I can watch it with a
group of blind and sighted friends. So where in the world can I find
 such an animal?

Thanks as always for your wonderful help.

 Peace, Kathy
