there are other options as well, for example if you use a voice over i p

it. I use voipo.

Hello,

I have a tiny device that I have plugged into a splitter which is plugged
into the phone jack on the wall. The second side of the splitter holds the
line to the phone. I have the other end of my tiny device plugged into my
Bookport input jack. This works great when running my Bookport on battery
power. When I use AC power for the Bookport, the AC hum is so loud as to
render the recording useless. So, I really understand your issue. If you
find a useable device, I'd love to hear about it.

Another option for you might be to use a device that used to be available at
Radio Shack that would reduce AC hum.
You would plug this device into your AC plug on the wall, plug your recorder
into this device and the AC hum was significantly reduced. I haven't looked
for or heard of this device for years. So, I don't know if it is still
available. Just another angle...

I really don't know why other list members don't turn to Google first as

Hi!

Interested in thoughts of others regarding iPad audio.

The last full-sized iPad I owned was the iPad 3 and I had this device
around 3 years ago I think it was.

Anyway I didn't keep the device for long as I didn't much care for the
audio of the speaker.

I now have an iPad Mini and the audio is truly divine if I dare say so
myself and I doubt whether there are too many tablets around the size of
the iPad that would exhibit such good quality audio from stereo internal
speakers.

So I'm wondering about the audio of the full-sized iPad 4, is it as good
as or better than that found on the iPad Mini 4 or is it about the same as
found on the iPad 3.

Joe, thanks for your thoughtful and deliberate response. I did a specific
Google search yesterday for Audigy drivers for use with my particular card
and Windows 8.1, something I thought I did a while ago, and came up with
the particular set of drivers directly from Creative Labs through a tech
discussion group. I plan to have my daughter remove and install the sound
card to the Dell some time this week, and give them a try. Hopefully the
card will give me the performance hoped for, or at least remembered by me.
It sure has to beat the on board contraption I am using now. If not, then
I guess the search is on again . And if everything works out well,
then I'll drop a short note to let the list know about it.

Thanks again,

At present, and most likely for the foreseeable future, I will continue

Would like to have a card with all the appropriate line inputs and

be able to access the software that comes with it using Window-Eyes.

The only reason I am asking about a USB card is because I don't want to

When you’re playing content the controls such as payse etc seem to disappear

I can get around this by using the transport controls on my Bluetooth

Yes I wrote about a Hands-Free Speakerphone which could be controlled from

I use 3 different cordless phone systems in my house and I do wish that
all the features and functionality of all three systems could be
combined into one but the fact is this won’t ever happen given that the
price of such a system would be one very few people would be willing to
pay.

The RTX Dualphone is the system I most often use as it gives me
connectivity between two Skype accounts and my PSTN line as well as a
few bonuses I’ve found along the way.

The first is that the Dualphone works very well with Hearing
Instruments whether you wish to connect them externally through the
3.5MM headset jack or use the T-Coil of your instruments if applicable,
the sound is very loud and has quite a wide dynamic range, something to
be expected I guess given the phone is to be used with Skype but such a
dynamic range makes a great deal of difference when talking to people
via a standard landline call which the Dualphone handles quite nicely.

The layout of the phone is simple enough, to soft keys left and right
of a navigator key with, a call end end key above a standard numeric
key pad.

The Soft Keys change their function depending on what mode you’re in
but I found these changes easy to remember once I’d read the layout of
the menu structure and so forth which is clearly outlined in the
manual, as yet I haven’t experimented as to whether the number buttons
will act as shortcuts in the menu system.

Setting the Dualphone out of the box is the hard part as this device
doesn’t come with a HTML Interface so setup will have to be done with
someone who can see the screen but the steps are in a logical order and
easy for anyone to follow.

The Dualphone first asks for information about the country it is to be
used in along with a matching country code. The code determine the
structure of outgoing numbers when using a Skype account or PSTN line.

The Phone then prompts for a Skype Username and password and its here
that I found things get a bit tricky. The password is easy enough to
enter using the key pad however the password must be 10 characters or
less in length and I didn’t see any reference to this in the manual, I
only found out about this by trial and error.

Once all the user data is entered and saved the phone logs into Skype
though you can choose if the phone automatically does this upon
startup.

Making calls using my “Skype-Out” number was easily done by dialling
the number on the key pad and pressing the “Call” button. By default
the Phone prompts the user which line to use for dealing, the
“Skype”-out or “PSTN” number, “Skype-Out” is highlighted as the
default so pressing of the left soft key has the phone use Skype for
dialling, you can change the default behaviour in the settings menu of
the phone so that you’re not prompted and the phone just uses Skype or
PSTN at the touch of the button.

I also discovered that if the “Call” button is held down in “Standby”
mode the phone by default will use the PSTN line for dialling which is
handy to know for emergency situations.

One of the small annoyances with this phone is that you obviously don’t
know which of your contacts is online at any time so dialling them
directly using letters on the key pad really isn’t an option but this
is trivial for me as I bought the phone really to be able to answer
calls at those times when I was away from my computer and this is
easily done by pressing the “Call” key as you would with any other
cordless phone when you hear a call come in.

No, the RTX Dualphone is a Skype/PSTN phone though RTX do make some SIP
phones which I've not tried.

I have tried the Gigaset C610IP I think it is and I very much recommend

The phone can be set up from its Web type Interface and has excellent

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering if anyone has used Sound Forge 11 Pro with Windows 7 and
Jaws

15. I seem to have problems with the programs not interacting well, and I
do a lot of recording and editing for my voiceover profession. I am
wondering if someone could tell me which version of Jaws would work best
with Sound Forge 11 Pro.

Thanks.

I think I've already lost one agent because I couldn't get a couple of

Hi rick, is it really off topic, if you need the information. when i was
six years old, my mother started to teach me braille by hand. this was in
1939, when there were braile machines, but we didn't have one. there was
something called a hand frame. imagine a gide with cells in it. 26, to be
precise. in each cell, there was six depressions. one used a thing
called a style to press out the separate dots. the style passed through
the paper, and wen in to the depression, leaving the dot behind. many
years later, the rnib in britain, sold a pocket frame, which not only had
rows of these cells, but also had two slots, on each side. through these
slots one can pass a narrow tape. the slots puts the tape beneath one of
the rows of cells. there are in fack two sets of slots, for different
width of tape. it is one of the devices that i am using. i have marked
some memory discs, but some of them have nowhere to write, or only a
small space. i like to put a number followed by the capacity of the memory
stick. i should have thought that the foundation for the blind in america
would have had these pocket frames. i am only guessing what the
organisation your side of the water would be called. good luck brian.

I hope to find a utility or program which will convert a large group of
text files to mp3 audio files. The operative phrase is large group. I
can easily do this individually. But I hope to find something which
allows me to place a lengthy list of text files and then the program
will convert each to individual mp3 files. Is this what text aloud does?
It sticks in my mind that there was another such program, but I cannot
recall its name.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Here is a Microsoft article on changing folder permissions:

Your NLS player will play BARD and MP3's. Only cartridges are officially
supported though. You can purchase blank cartridges and load your MP3's
and books from BARD onto them.

Using thumb drives or any other USB attached drive with the USB port on
the side of the player to play books or MP3's isn't officially
supported. It does work though, although not with every flash drive or
USB attachable drive. Where did you read that you could plug your Zen
Stone into the NLS player?

I'd suggest going to the BARD Talk web site to see which drives people
have had success with. You can also find out where to buy blank
cartridges. I don't have the URL with me on this system, but I've found
it before quickly enough with Google.

High Tom,
You are correct, you cannot play those NLS books on your computer.
Like I said in an earlier post, the people at the Bard Talk website has
those encrypted.
So no you can't convert those to a standard audio file.
But between you and me both, I wish we could.
My best regards.

Hello Jim and list: Since I don't exactly know what a pin drive is..I

Subject: Fwd: SkypeTalking 0.8 released!

From: Hrvoje Katic hrvojeka...@gmail.com
To: skypetalk...@googlegroups.com

Dear friends,

Proud to release exciting new version 0.8 of SkypeTalking. This is the
fourth release, and contains lots of new features and some bug fixes and
improvements as well.
Comparing to first release from February (SkypeTalking 0.5), this is a
big step forward!
Some highlights of this new release are chat monitoring, easy way for
changing a mood text on the fly, improved support for file transfers,
better reporting of call duration, contacts manager and SMS support.
I would like to thank again to all of the contributors, as well as our
second developer Gianluca who has also made a lot of work on V0.8.
Now regarding the translations. The following translations still have to
be updated. They will unfortunately be outdated in 0.8. These are as
follows: czech, spanish, japanese, polish, portuguese and chinese.
All others are updated, including the documentation. I am just unsure
for russian and ukranian readme but whatsnew is translated.
We also simplified the installer, and jfwapi.dll is now automatically
registered, so users running 64-bit JAWS should no longer have problems
with SkypeTalking not detecting JAWS. SkypeTalking can now also be
launched with Alt+Ctrl+Shift+T hot key, which I didn't mentione in
whatsnew, so this will be updated for the next version under 0.8 section.
Everyone here on SkypeTalking mailing list was able to follow how much
work we've made on this new version, and thus every feedback is welcome.
We fixed some bugs, and some may be still present. The one problem that
we are aware of is slower performance with some commands e.g. slow
loading of contacts manager, slow reactions with end call command
(alt+ctrl+shift+end) etc. Another bug is where SkypeTalking will say New
SMS when that's in fact a new file transfer. I also experienced some
interesting problems where some events are not spoken sometimes for some
reason, so I ask myself, if they are spoken in general, then why they
are sometimes ignored for no reason, even if ignoring is off. I hope
that we will be able to address these bugs, but in general the program
should work quite well.
Here comes the complete list of new features copied from what's new
document as well as the download link for both portable and installer
versions of SkypeTalking 0.8.

New: Added the ability to monitor active chats, in other words, opened
chat windows. Use keystrokes Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Function keys F1 through F10
to set monitor on one of the last 10 active chats (press twice to bring
focus to that chat window). You can then use Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Numbers for
reading last 10 messages in currently monitored chat. Pressing
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+C will announce currently monitored chat, and pressing it
twice will bring focus to that chat window.
New: Added the ability to read and/or change your Skype mood text.
Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+M will speak your current mood text, and
pressing it twice will open a dialog box that lets you change your mood
text.
New: Alt+Ctrl+Shift+O command reports the current user online status,
and when pressed twice, will report the user's current balance on a
Skype credit.
New: Added command for speaking the current call duration,
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+D.

New: Added contacts Manager, accessed with Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F11, which is
the alternative to Skype contact list. It will display your contacts in
a multi-select list box allowing you to select them with a spacebar and
perform various actions on them such as Call, Chat or View Profile. It
will also display the Last Seen information for offline contacts, which
is inaccessible with some Skype versions and to some screen readers such
as NVDA. The View Profile action will open a profile viewer that will
allow you to review the selected contact's details by using the Tab and
Shift+Tab and the arrow keys. The Call and Chat actions are
self-describing. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+F11 twice will focus the
original Skype contact list. If multiple contacts are selected, then you
will have options for creating a conference or a multi-chat.
New: Added commands for answering and ending a call, Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home
and Alt+Ctrl+Shift+End (not on the NumPad). Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home
during a call will toggle between hold and resume for the current call.
Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+Home twice quickly will answer and join the
incoming call to a conference. Pressing Alt+Ctrl+Shift+End twice quickly
will toggle microphone mute or unmute.
New: Added support for sending SMS with SkypeTalking. The command
Alt+Ctrl+Shift+S will now open an SMS wizard which will allow you to

 Hello Victoria,
Use an audio editor like Sound Forage or Gold Wave to record your
 talking
 book tapes.
Convert them to .MP3 with Switch and or any other audio file converter.
Then copy it to the cartridge, and there you are.
Now all you have to do is, put the cartridge in the player and go to
 town
 listening to it!
 Hope this helps.
 My best regards.

 Hello Tom,
Lock me up and throw away the key!
When I was only 10 years of age, I received a talking book record
player and a C-77 talking book cassette player.
I was told that you couldn't play music tapes and records on those
 machines.
But I got away with doing that with both of them.
The only thing with the record player, you couldn't play 45 and or 78
records on them because there wasn't any speed positions for those 2
 speeds.
But you were able to play 33 and a third record LP's without any
 problems at all!
And I did, and enjoyed it too!
So again, lock me up and throw away the key!
 My best regards.

I would imagine that if you speak with someone from a library, they're
naturally gonna tell you that you can't play anything on these players
but books; it's like (in the old days)..folks would sometimes say you
weren't supposed to play anything but talking book records on the old
talking book players! I've never really heard a definitive answer for
that one; all I know is: people used to do it all the time (played
their records on the talking book machines)..now it might be a thing
where..the needles were bigger..and the grooves in the old talking
book
records were bigger; I don't know for sure..but oh yeah..playing
record
albums on talking book machines was a practice that people did a lot!
But I'm fairly certain that..if one had talked with their

Re: MS DOS Prompt

2006-08-26 Thread Isaac
I had tried that but some how the properties were all messed up. I kept trying
to set the working directory in the properties by typing in that directory but
dos just kept telling me that it could not find the file. This was very
frustrating. So I deleted the short cut in my start menu and then created a new
short cut to command.com from the explorer window. I now get a ms dos prompt
window but now under properties there is nothing in the working edit box .but
cmd line has

c
:\Windows in the edit box. But when the dos prompt window comes the directory
shows it as C:\windows\command\EBD this is strange behaviour in my opinion. But
the bottom line is that it works I can just type in a cd command and change
directories. I know that command is the home directory because command dir
shows it as it by repeating it in the window. My conclusion was that I had two
copies of dos and the short cut that I deleted was pointing to the one that
wasn't working properly. Thanks for all the suggestions that everyone sent. I
can use it now the way it is. Isaac

Actually I believe in the ME eddition you can simply type command from
the run dialog and it will give you a dos window. I think the prompt will
  be c:\windows.

   Hi.

I don't know the exact syntax for Windows ME, but here's something that
  may
help. These instructions work for XP. Maybe ME has something similar.

   Go to the desktop
Open MY COMPUTER and select the C drive.

Now under the file menu there should be a choice for SEARCH. Choose
  that
   and hit ENTER.

There should now be a field where you can enter part of the file name.
  In
that field type COMMAND and hit ENTER.

This should bring up all files with COMMAND in them. Look for something
   like COMMAND.COM.

I think you'll see the path for the file there. Make note of that path.

Now in the run dialogue, type in the complete path and COMMAND. This
  should
   give you a DOS window.

Again, this will work for XP. I would hope that Windows ME has
  something
similar. If others on the list know more about this feel free to add to
  or
   correct what I'm saying.

   Hope this helps.

This is what I get when I copy and paste your suggestion into the working edit

Cannot find the working folder for this program. The program may have
difficulty locating graphic 232 its files and documents. Make sure that the
working
folder is specified correctly in the

Go to windows explorer and look in your windows folder for command.exe
this is what is needed to run the dos shel. If it is not there you may be
able to find it on your ME cd.

When I first installed my SoundBlaster Live USB External, I figured out
   how
to prevent the Creative volume control from continually appearing in the
system tray. but, for some reason, it has starting reappear5ing, and I
   can't
remember where to go to tell it not to. can anyone remind me? Thanks.

ms dos prompt

2006-08-21 Thread Isaac
I was trying to get model talker working and found the command line prompt in
ms dos doesn't come up. I messed with the properties and wondered what should
be in the edit boxes in the program tab? I am using windows M E with jfw 7.0.
When I enter on ms dos prompt I get a message saying the file can't be found
this happens before I can type anything in the window for command line.
Thanks for any help. Isaac

Re: Can WinMX be made to work

2005-04-16 Thread Isaac
I have used win mx with quick mx and have had mimimal success. I won't be
popular for saying this but I believe if you will give bear share lite a go you
will find the best program for sharing music that works well with a screen
reader. There are no scripts required and the controls are simple. Ike

other thing is when I save a file I have worked the saved file is many times
larger then the original. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ike
