Setting up your hi-fi

2017-11-15 Thread Walter via Pc-audio
Hi folks. Below is a link to an article by the Chord company about setting
up your hi-fi and the role good quality components play in such a system.
Of course the article speaks about things from the Chord companies product
point of view but the principles are interesting regardless of what brand
you use. By the way this is Chord, the speaker cable and interconnects and
not the Khord Electronics company. You will note the spelling is different.
Anyhow if it interests you the link is below. Walter.

Reclockers

2017-10-25 Thread Walter via Pc-audio
Hi all. My computer guy was talking to me around a week ago as we discussed
him building a new computer for me, a high spec computer. He said I should
consider using a reclocker that goes between my PC and my USB DAC. Has
anybody ever used one of these and didit make a difference to the sound
quality. I had never heard of them until he mentioned it but I'm not sure
what difference, if any one would make. Any comments? Walter.

Opinions sought and opinion given!

2017-09-24 Thread Walter via Pc-audio
Hi all. At the moment I've begun the task of upgrading my Hi-fi system but
I should let you know at this point what my system comprises of. In truth I
have 2 systems; one upstairs in a double bedroom and one downstairs in my
living room. The living room system comprises of a pair of piano black B &
W CM9 speakers driven by an Arcam A28 integrated amplifier. I have three
audio sources; The top of the range blueraye DVD and a custom built PC and
my cable digi box. The interconnect are high end cables as is the speaker
cable and topped off with an Arcam R-Pac DAC.

The upstairs system comprises of a pair of B & W CM5 stand mount speakers
plus the B & W PV1 Sub Woofer driven by the Arcam Solo Neo. My sources are
another custom built PC with sound quality the main consideration when
having it constructed. The Solo Neo is a mini music system comprising of a
good quality CD player and DAB radio and internet radio in the one box. And
finally the Arcam R-Pac DAC, just like in the living room. Again the
interconnects and speaker cables are high quality.

My original intention was to use the upstairs system as a work horse when
it comes to downloading and uploading files and processing the downloads
etc. The intention was to use the downstairs for "serious" music listening.
However The quality I have upstairs is equal to the quality downstairs and
I've never used the system downstairs as I spend all my time up here. The
system downstairs has never really been run in since I got it and in effect
the system downstairs is just filling the living room.

I've decided to have only one system and have decided to have that one
system up here. I have replaced the Arcam R-Pac DAC with the Chord
Electronics Chordette DAC. This has made a huge difference to the sound
reproduction in this room up here. The next step is to upgrade the speakers
and I have a good relationship with my local Hi-Fi dealer. They have
brought around the updated B & W 705 stand mount speakers and installed
them. I can audition them for a week or so then I will get a pair of the B
& W 805 stand mount speakers to audition. Finally I might get a pair of the
B & W 703 floor standing speakers but it might just be that I'll have made
my mind up by that time.

The Speakers I have now are the 705s. I've had them since Friday afternoon
and have run them 24 hours a day to run them in as they hadn't been fully
run in; they are brand new speakers just out the box.

I am amazed at the quality of sound from those speakers the 700 series is
the successor to the CM series and the 705s are the equivalent of the CM5s.
However they are by far superior in sound quality. Imaging is so precise
and the soundstage is so very open. I at times find myself sitting in my
chare and looking slightly upwards as there is a lot of elevation in the
sound stage it almost gives the impression I'm looking up onto a stage.
Guitars and piano sound very accurate and the sound could be considered
forward of the speakers. The 3D imagery is amazing as there is so much
depth. I have a newage track by a guy called Deuter. This track contains
at various points gentle and delicate chimes and they are very distinctive
and the decay is obvious. I am impressed with these speakers and look
forward to hearing the 805s and if the 705s are so good, goodness knows what
to expect from the 805s, they are though double the price of the 705s.

Once I've settled on the speakers then I'll change the amplifier. I have in
mind the Arcam A39 as I like the Arcam/B & W combination. However nothing
at this point is written in stone so your input would be appreciated. Has
anybody heard the B & W 805 speakers? If so; what's your opinion? Do you
have any suggestions as an alternative to B & W, or Arcam? I like a
detailed sound with distinctive bass but not over powering. I don't like a
clinical sound as it feels so sterile. I also like a forward soundstage.
Many people I know prefer a more recessed sound but I like the forward sound
as it gives the impression that the musicians are present in the room. As
I said, nothing is written in stone yet and I've not committed; apart from
the Chordette DAC which I've already purchased. I will be trading in the
bulk of my stuff for the new and fortunately will get a good price as the
items I have are in new condition. Your input will be of help and might set
me off on a different path that might be more productive. Walter.

Hi guys, I have a bunch of MP3 files which I would like to normalize. I've
not done this before, and I am not an audio engineer so am wondering if
there is an easy-to-use program I can put these files through to normalize
the volume. Free or reasonably priced preferred. Thanks, Norma

Yes, Goldwave handles FLAC files but the question is can it save the Cue
points in a FLAC file? I'll do some research on this myself I I could
actually find this useful given all the CD ripping I do for the archive.

Course if you were to save to another format FLAC for example - assuming
Goldwave supports this function - you could save your Cue points in the
file.

Thanks for that.
I really relish the difference in the way systems sound in my house, makes
music all the more worth the while listening to in my view if you have a couple
of different sources.
I have the Bowers And Wilkins A7 by my bed, the system based around the Hotel
RA10 Amp I built 3 years ago in the Den and the Denon AVR2113 receiver in the
lounge, that’s where I want to put the Bowers and Wilkins floor standing
speakers.
I’m using some Polk Audio bookshelf speakers with my Hotel which will do for
now but the speakers for my Denon are cheap and nasty, they need replacing so
I’ll tackle them first.
I’m quite surprised at just how many people on this list are using Bowers And
Wilkins gear, that says quite a lot, people love their music ,smile>

Hi. I have a system upstairs and one downstairs. Down stairs are the B & W
CM9 and they are big but great speakers. I was toying with the idea of
upgrading to the CM10 but haven't done so thus far. My upstairs system has the
B & W CM5 which are stand mount speakers and are really wonderful speakers.
They don't have the solid bass that the CM9 do but very respectful nonetheless.
 I did though add the B & W C2 Subwoofer and that makes a world of a
difference. It is hard to decide which is the better system because the set up
is different. The speakers downstairs are 15 feet apart while the CM5s are 8
Feet apart. A friend though reckons that the system upstairs is much more
superior in sound reproduction and thinks I should sell my downstairs system.
At this point I'll keep both although if truth is told, the downstairs system

Hi Walter. Long time no speak - I hope you're doing well.

Many thanks for this. I read the manual and was confused ... it said
that the Talking Books folder could accommodate DAISY books and any
other file type that was recognised by the player (which I took to
include MP3) but, in a separate section, it said that only DAISY and
Epub (and some other format that I can't remember) would be played in
the Talking Books folder. In that section it did mention other
bookshelves/folders such as Music but my interpretation of what was
written was that the player should format these itself rather than me
actually having to add the Music/Podcasts/etc folders. Either way,
I'm bemused that all the file types play in the Talking Books folder
on SD cards and other USB drives but not on these ones.

Anyway, I'm not very experienced with the unit either but I'll be
happy to help if I can. I assume you got a copy of the user guide

and I'll be happy to email it to you.

All my best, Danny

RE: Issue With Victor Reader Stratus12 M

2016-06-29 Thread Walter
Hi. I've just bought the same unit in the last8 days and I had a similar
problem. Playing books isn't a problem but to play music and to get features
such as the random play, you need to creat a folder on the pen drive called
$VRMusic and to put your music files inside that folder. Actually, I had to
creat a subfolder called music and put all my music files inside that. As I
said, I Just got this player last Tuesday and haven't got to grips with it. I
actually prefer my Plextalk PTN1 both for ease of use and sound quality but it
is showing it's age and on two occasions I thought it had died, then it decided
it wasn't going to die but I reckoned I'd better get something to replace it
sooner rather than later. Walter.

Hi. I'm using a USB pen which has both DAISY books and MP3 files on
it with my VR Stratus 12 M (all the DAISY files are in folders, some
of the mixed music and audio MP3 files are in folders while others are
single file items). On other pens this mix of file types has never
been an issue but, with my two pens that I'm using now, the Stratus12
M is only recognising and playing the DAISY files (I've checked the
number of books both in the bookshelf structure and using the
information key ... key 0), even though the other files are definitely
on the drive (they're showing up on my laptop). Does anyone possibly
know what's going on with these pens or with the unit?

Many thanks in advance for any help, Danny

Hi. I use an Arcam usb dac, that's the only connection between my PC and

Are you using the built-in sound system on the Mother Board? New board new
sound chip more than likely.

My Windows desktop computer is 4 years old and I have to admit that the Bilt-in
Realtek Sound device - particularly with Windows 7 and up - sounds very nice
and records well.

Corus I’m probably clutching at straws regarding your Sound quality difference,
I’m just guessing and assuming you’re using a built-in sound device, use an
external USB Sound device and you’ll probably notice even more difference.

Other factors may come into play of course, you say the power supply was
replaced? Well it could be possible that the previous power supply you had had
some faults, was under powering the computer in some way thus the sound quality
could have been degraded.

No difference in the sound between MP3 320K and HD Audio files? Well you
probably won’t pick any difference from a built-in sound card but if you have a
dedicated DAC or other system for HD stuff then you certainly should notice the
difference.

improved sound quality, wonder why?

2016-04-07 Thread Walter
Hi folks. a couple of months back my PC had a power supply problem and
also required a new mother board. Trying to find out the trouble took a bit
of time as my computer guy ordered the parts and they went missing and he
had to re-order. The whole thing took around 5 weeks before I could get my
PC up and running again. When I did and played some music through my hi-Fi
I was astonished to hear the sound reproduction had dramatically improved,
and I don't just mean a little, it is a huge improvement. My computer guy
was here this morning for another matter not concerning my PC but another
computer I have but I asked his opinion on the improved sound quality. He
noticed it right away and felt that although I was playing mp3 tracks at
320kbs, he said it sounded identical to the hd sound on his music tracks, he
buys hd definition tracks. I was wondering just why the difference from
before and now? Everything is the same, my sound set up has not changed in
any way. The only thing that has changed is the power supply and the
motherboard. I can't see the power supply impacting on sound quality but
the mother board is different. The old one was a Gigabite but the new one
is Msi? or is it IMS, I really can't remember but whereas the old
motherboard had usb 3 ports, this one has usb 3.1. I'm wondering if this is
what is making the difference. Do any of you use usb3.1 ports and if so,
has it made a difference to your sound quality? That is the only thing I
can think of that would make a difference. Opinions welcome. Walter.

RE: SoundCloud

2015-10-16 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I was asked to check this out from a user point of view and didn't
find it accessible. I was asked on behalf of a charity project to play
around with pre-uploaded music files and didn't find the free version much
use. This guy wanted to upload audio files for the public to play such as
info regarding government benefits etc. I'll paste my response to that guy
below so you will see my experience. Walter.

Hi Glyn. Firstly my apology; I was going through my deleted items, clearing
them out when I came across your email. somehow it went straight to my
deleted items rather than my in box. I would have replied sooner if I had
seen it so sorry about that.

OK. This is my initial input regarding the site. The music is displayed
clearly and the play button is easy to find and activate but that is where
the simplicity ends and the problems begin. Once you have activated the
play button and the music plays, there is no way you can use the other play
controls because the music drowns out the screen reader and as there is no
keyboard short cut keys trying to use them is a hiding to nothing. You have
to wait for a quiet passage in the audio before trying frantically to find a
control but the quiet period never lasts long enough for you to find what
you want. This is the free version and I noticed there is a Pro service but
I guess you have to pay for that but there is no way of telling if the pro
version is any more accessible than the free version and in any case, the
people who would want to play any files you upload would use the free
service. As I've said I've only looked at the site briefly and when I
discovered getting to the play controls during playback was problematic I
didn't go any further. As with WMP, if there were short cut keys such as
Control+s for stop or Control+p for pause or control+m for mute or+control
+r for rewind then it would be a good service to utilise. It might be you
can map the keyboard and create these shortcuts but I'd need to look further
into the site and I'll do that as soon as I can. Of course this initial
summery is from a blind point of view. People with hearing loss or other
disabilities but who have site, or even some partially sighted folk would be
able to use it. Unfortunately though if you have no usable sight and in the
absence of play controls accessibility then it wouldn't be of any use to
them. Nonetheless you have to consider the majority of people who would use
the facility and a minority group shouldn't be allowed to veto something
because they are disenfranchised; you can please all of the people some of
the time and some of the people all of the time but you will never please
all of the people all of the time. This doesn't mean that solutions aren't
sought to resolve the disenfranchisement and that might be by linking to
another service. I will ask on the tech lists I'm on to see what can be
done and will get back to you. Walter.

OK, no matter, he's in jail for pedafilia anyway. If you take a large, very
large piece of thick card, or even a large oblong of very thin plywood and
holde it at each end and begin to bounce it, the middle portion will begin
to flex and you will hear the sound it makes. Walter.

Hi. I'm no electronic engineer so the best way I can describe Electrostatic
speakers (or headphones ) is to compare them with regular speakers we are
all familiar with. Your regular speakers use an electro magnet to cause the
Speaker cone to vibrate causing the cone to move the air in front of it
giving you sound. Generally speaking, the larger the speaker cone the
greater the bass response. If you touch a speaker while playing you will
feel the vibrations. Electrostatic speakers however don't use a magnet but
an electric current to vibrate a panel and this vibration moves the air in
front of it and gives you the sound. These speakers are very accurate
reproducers of sound but since the vibrating panel doesn't move very much
the bass response is very poor and has to be augmented by the use of a
subwoofer. I don't know if you have heard of a guy called Rolf Harriss? he
used a wobble board in his music; the flexing of that board produced
rhythmic sounds and that is the principle upon which electrostatic speakers
and headphones work. Walter.

Yes, they did require a special amp. They even had a special connector that
plugged into the amp that came with the phones. And these phones were just
wonderful, except for those who want major bass. For folk and classical,
they were amazing! And they were light and quite comfortable, but of course,
they wouldn't have worked on a pc or a portable device, due to the special

Audio podcasting

2015-09-25 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi all. I'll try and make this request as simple as possible but it is
about a subject I know nothing about so if I display some ignorance then I
ask your tolerance.

I'm involved with a government funded project that is based around helping
disabled people to understand the services that are on offer to help them
decide for themselves the level of independence they can handle and the
level of help they need and how to get the funding to accomplish this. For
those in the UK this deals with the SDss service (Self Directed Support
Scotland).

The guy in charge would like to provide audio recordings of varying aspects
of this service but the problem is where to host them so they are accessible
to all.

He sent me a link to www.soundcloud.com to check it out for accessibility
and when I played the music tracks that were there I as a blind person could
not access the other play controls as the music drowned out the screen
reader. These controls did not have any keyboard shortcuts so were
impossible to hear until the music ended. This would be fine for those who
can see a screen but not for those who can't.

Does anybody know of a service, some host where these files can be posted
and can be accessed by all and that the play controls can be accessed by
keyboard commands? Free services would be preferred but at this point
anything is of interest. If anyone can help with a place to place these
audio podcasts then I'd be grateful for your help. Walter.

Hi. Hmm, I don't know how to do that. I think my version must be a
different version from Dennis's version as I can't find the options he

import button and all that does is give me a list of two file types. I
guess it is going to take a few weeks or more to play around withit. and if
all else fails I can always set everything to default and start again.

RE: Searching Records

2015-07-22 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Roger. OK, it depends on how you have your folders and drives set up but
if you have a particular drive you know the song is on then go to that drive
and open it. Now do a control and E and you will be placed in an edit box.
Type in the search term i.e. artist name or song name or album etc and then
press enter. You should hear the progress in percentage terms and after the

Good Morning

Some while ago I put all my music onto an external hard drive. Last night I
was asked to play a specific track that I know I have in one of the many,
many various artistes discs I have but I just cannot remember which one. A
simple search would find it but I just cannot work out how. Some advice
would but very much appreciated please.

RE: looking for simple digital to analog converter

2015-04-17 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Andre. I use the Arcam R-Dac. Very simple and high quality although not
overly expensive. Has USB connection, Phono connections and also a
headphone jack with independent headphone volume controls. It makes a huge
difference to the sound from my PC. Walter.

Hi all

Looking for a reasonable good but simple digital to analog converter to
connect my hifi to my computer.

My criteria are the following:

One usb port

2
RCA output ports

The sound quality must be good.

Nothing fancy just that.

Can anyone help?

RE: Bowers Wilkins T7 review: The Bluetooth speaker worth waiting for - Pocket-lint

2014-11-29 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. I read that revue and it could hardly be considered unbiased. The guy
states from the outset he doesn't like B W stuff so he is hardly likely to
give a subjective revue.
It's kinda like somebody saying they hate baked beans and then him being
asked to taste and give an honest revue and an impartial comment on which
brand of baked beans is best. At the end of the day if you are going to
spend a lot of money then you should always audition the equipment first and
do so on more than one occasion. The best option is to ask for a home
audition because even in the audition room of the dealer, the acoustics will
not be the same as your living room or bedroom. If the dealer is worth his
salt he should have a demo model or should be able to get one from the
manufacturer to let you listen to. I'm currently auditioning the B W PV1
subwoofer. I've had it for nearly 2 weeks now and have given it a good run
for it's money and like what i've heard and will buy one. If I had listened
to it in the store it most likely would have been through different
equipment and as I've said, different acoustics. For the most part, store
auditioning is great for narrowing your options until you find something
that might be to your taste then you could ask for a home audition. In the
end, it doesn't matter how many revues you read, your ears are the best
judge of what sounds good or bad to you. Walter.

Well, just to be a devil's advocate, here is a very unfavorable review
of the t7. This is basically why I don't put much faith in reviews,
unless I know the reviewer and know his/jher taste is like my own, so I
can be reasonably confident I will like what they do and dislike what

RE: The difference a subwoofer can make

2014-11-28 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi John. Yes, Arcam do a few dacs but the one I have is the R-Pack USB DAC.
With the subwoofer I find that the USB interconnect is better if you use the
Chord cable. Without the subwoofer things are a bit clinical but you get
great imagery and clarity but as I said, a little too clinical. However
with the addition of the sub that clinical characteristic is neutralised and
you get the benefit of a solid bass line but also clarity at the top end.
The Arcam R-Pack USB dac is their entry level model but is very good,
especially when it comes to playing mp3 files. I've compared listening to a
CD on a separate CD player with the MP3 file through the dac and there is
very little difference. Unless you were doing an A/B test you wouldn't know
which one is playing and even then, you might not detect the difference.
The Subwoofer is great but the only drawback is setting the default level,
that is digital with a touch screen but once set, it need not be touched
again ever. It does have a on the fly volume in case you want some extra
woomf on a particular track but once the sub is turned off and then turned
back on, the on the fly volume control goes back to its neutral setting.
Walter.

Hi folks. I've been auditioning at home the B W PV1d subwoofer. Most
people will assume that subwoofers are all about bass and nothing else.
Maybe I should describe my set up before going on. My Source is a custom
built tower PC. I'm using an Arcam R-pack DAC with a Chord USB interconnect
going from the PC to the Dac. The Phonos going from the Dac to the
amplifier which is an Arcam Solo Neo are Chord Chameleon interconnects. My
Speaker cable is also Chord cables and the Speakers are the B W CM5s plus
the B W PV1D subwoofer. OK, Before installing the subwoofer the sound
from my system was very good indeed but since the use of the PV1 there has
been a profound difference. The CM5s are extremely effective despite being
stand mount and their bass response is very good also. However, with the
PV1 the sound has a completely different quality and the sound stage has
changed out of all recognition. It is a very warm and solid sound and very
large. Bass is deep but very well controlled. On Saturday evening I was
sitting listening to a few tracks and was playing at a reasonably high level
but it sounded powerful but not loud. The thing though that really caught
my attention was how wide and high the sound was, it filled the whole wall,
in fact it appeared the sound was larger than the room I was in and in
truth, although I have good spacial awareness I was unsure where the
speakers were placed as the sound was very much forward of the speakers and
had great depth. I could tell the vocalist was right in front of me but the
drums were behind him and other instruments could be placed accurately. It
is very hard to describe to others what I heard but for those of you who
have or have had some site, it is kinda like sitting down in front of a 42
inch TV but when you turn it on, the picture looks like a 65 inch screen.
The subwoofer has filled out a great more than just an improved bass line
but the whole picture has been dramatically altered. When I listen to a
radio drama it almost sounds as if the actors are giving me a private show
and are acting out right in front of me. I've got to say, I'm mightily
impressed with this sub and for those who can afford a good sub, I would
heartily recommend it.

There is one fly in the ointment though; The sub being digital has a number
of settings one can adjust to suit your needs whether it be to match a
different set of speakers, if it is for music listening or movie or gaming
etc, these settings are not accessible to the blind. However when they are
set they are fixed until you wish to change them and even if you turn off
the sub and turn it back on, these settings remain. The off and on switch
is also digital so you don't really know it is on or off, unless you can
hear it but it automatically senses the lack of a signal and turns itself
off. It also has an auto switch off facility which I have set to 30 minutes
so when I go to bed and turn the amp off, if after 30 minutes it doesn't
sense a signal it switches off and switches on again when you turn on the
amp in the morning

RE: Another question about the Olympus DM5

2014-11-27 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. Well, where do I begin. I think I'm very spoiled because I have a
20gig Creative Zen touch mp3 player. This player is magnificent when it
comes to sound quality but I'm not able to use it because I can't find the
Win7 drivers for the player so I can load it with music. I think it is
designed for XP users only. Giving I can't use it I was hoping the DM5
would have good sound reproduction and although it is reasonable at a push,
it doesn't compare to the Zen Touch. My disappointment was compounded when
I compared it with my mobile phone player which is superior to the DM5 in
sound quality. The DM5 spoken menus are inadequate. It tells you the track
name but you get very little info of how many tracks you have on the player.
For example if I decide to play music by selecting artist then it doesn't
give me the number of tracks in any particular artists folder and also when
I arrow up and down the list, the reaction time is very slow and that is
with speeding up the voice guidance. I'm inclined to just use my mobile for
music listening unless I can get a better player that will give me very high
quality sound reproduction. Oh, nearly forgot, I have to increase the
volume to nearly full to get a good level of volume, it seems the DM5 output
signal is a low one. It would seem to me that the player is truly meant as
a portable recorder and the music player function is an afterthought. This
player has never really been used, I'm just getting to grips with it. I
bought it a couple of years ago and it has lay in an equipment box ever
since and not been touched but maybe I'll consider selling it. Walter.

I was listening, I heard sounds from about 3 or 4 feet to the left and right

wall on the other and my brain was telling me, it isn't possible because
there is a cupboard there and a wall over there, but my ears are saying, it
doesn't matter, we are hearing it come from that location, a bit of most
enjoyable confusion. I thought I would give you all the benefit of what
I've experienced here Oh!! one final thought, it makes mp3 files sound so
very good despite the compression. Walter.

RE: Olympus DM5 question

2014-11-05 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. When I attach the AC plug I get no notification. I didn't try charging
via the usb because if a problem occurs then I have another element to
consider, is the fault with the player, the usb connection or my computer
etc. The AC was the most straightforward so I've used that but it must be
the default setting. When I'm more experienced I will try the usb and no
doubt I'll get a notification confirming usb charging, will have to wait and
see.

Last night I thought; what the hell, and put it on charge again over night.
I didn't do anything different as far as I know but in the morning I
disconnected it from the mains and turned it on and this time didn't get the
three beeps and the voice navigation was working. I won't do anything
involved with it until Friday when I'll get sighted help and if the charging
indicator shows full then I'll try exploring the player. In between now and
then I'll try working through some of the manual and try and make sense of
it. However though, it is working, so far anyway. I think though I'll buy
a replacement battery just to be on the safe side as they aren't too
expensive from Amazon. Walter.

Walter, the thing to keep in mind is that, when you plug it in, it
should say something like a c adapter connection or pc connection.
Then depending on your U S B settings, you must either select the a c
adapter setting, or it will be selected by default. Then once you here
that, you must press enter, it should then speak the promt: press ok
to start charging and once you here that you must press the enter key
strait away. You might not here any feedback at that point, but its
very important you press enter at that stage and no other button,
because that dialog will dismiss. What happened to you is that you
plugged it in power, but you did perhaps not confirm the charging
aspect. Then it run on power only. So then you took it out, and when
it turn back on, it gave you free short beeps to confirm that the
battery is stil flat. It did not charge and therefore it only work in
the wall.

Hi Roger. Launch CDEX. Press F4 and shif tab twice to take you to the
remote CDDB tab. Tab down and check the box for connecting to the Remote
CDDB and then tab to imput your email adress. Not sure if the email address
is first or the check box or the other way around but either way after
dealing with that, tab to OK and press enter. Walter.

RE: CDEx Question

2014-08-23 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Roger. Well, they must have changed things. I said to launch CDEX and
press F4 and then shift tab, I made a mistake, you have to control tab
twice. When you press F4 you do land on the encoding tab but if you do a
control and tab twice you should get there. I'm using version 1.51 and if I
have a copy here I can send it. If I get a chance in the next few days I'll
try and get hold of 1.70 and compare it with 1.51. Sorry if I confused you
in my original reply. Walter.

I di that but didn't appear to land where you wanted me. I ended up in
Encoding which seems to be part of Options/Settings where I set the bit rate

of 1.70 is different from the Beta we've been using for years?

Hi. CDEX will rip to Wave or rip to MP3. It will convert from mp3 to wave
and wave to mp3. It will also record and save as mp3 or Wave but it doesn't
do Og files for any of that, I'm using 1.51. You will need to use Switch or
Gold Wave for converting Og files. Walter.

Hi folks. Here's a conundrum for you, well, it is for me.

I'll try and explain as clearly as I can but it isn't a problem, just a
curiosity. I am ripping about 3,000 CDs and I've done around 850 so far.
Now the method I use is 1. I rip the disc and then when ripped I back it
 up
3 times. So, I will copy all the discs I rip to external drive 1. Then
I'll copy the same files to external drive 2. finally I will move the
 discs
I've ripped to external drive 3.I did a property check of the stuff
 I've
ripped so far and was told that the files in external drive 3 was 13,999.
External drive 1 and 2 said there were 13,994 files in each drive, 5 files
less than external drive 3. The Properties for all 3 drives gave the same
number for folders. I then by a process of elimination discovered the
folder that had the problem. The folder Carol Kidd has one album in it
called All My Tomorrows. When I open this folder there are 11 tracks in
there, as there should be. However if I do a property check of the folder
it says there are 16 files in the folder. There shouldn't be 16 tracks,
only 11. I thought these files might be hidden files and to find out what
they were I went to tools and I instructed the computer to show hidden
 files
but when I went to the album folder, there were still only 11 tracks but a
property checked still showed 16 files. Does anybody have an idea of why
this should be and what are those extra 5 files? Walter.

RE: Ripping With CDEX:IsIt No Longer Possible To Have Cdex Title Tracks?

2014-06-26 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. Not all data base will contain the information you might need. I've
just purchased the Porter Wagoner Dolly Parton 6 disc box set. This was
released on the 26th of May this year, I got it 2 weeks after the release.
However when ripping the discs with CDEX or Express Rip I could get no track
info and this was a Bear Family box set. I had to go on the web and find a
track list and enter the info manually. It is rather strange because I have
some very obscure CDs and the Data Base found that info without trouble.
You might find it of interest that Express Rip gives you the option of two
Data Bases and if one doesn't get the info, you can then try the other.
Walter.

Okay...so CDEX _doesn't_ used Gracenote; that's what I was wondering! So I
fail to understand why (aafter not having trouble with CDEX giving me the
track titles before) why it's doing so now! It well me be that this CD
Bboxed set hasn't been referenced, but it seems strange, for it's a Hank
Williams collection that was put out probably ten years ago (iI don't
remember the exact year it came out) but I thought surely it could be ripped
with the track information...but maybe not!

CDEx never used GraceNote.
You have to install Player.exe to get information from GraceNote that you
can also export to CDEx.
It is all described here:

Hello.

Surprised this doesn't seem to have been brought up already but the thread
is long and there are loads of messages so I might have missed it. I am
going to guess that the reason this no longer works is that the gracenet
database is no longer available to the programme. I believe a license fee
had to be paid to use the service in the first place, and while I could be
wrong about that, the database did change ownership recently, and both
Winamp and CDex no longer have access to it. WInamp is no longer being
updated as I'm sure everyone knows, and I don't think much is being done
with Cdex either. So it's likely that, unless another solution presents
itself, you will just have to manually input your track information, or use
a different programme.

Seems to me that there is somewhere in CDex where you have to tell it where
to get the title and track info. Then, when you put in a CD, it goes to the

Hi Dane. I would recommend strongly the Bose Cinemate SR1. This Soundbar
is extraordinary. The technology it contains inside is remarkable. When it
is set up you get a little confused for a moment or two because you hear
sounds coming from parts of the room where you know there are no speakers
but that is how it works by bouncing sounds off walls and ceiling and it
acts just like a surround sound system. The set up procedure is all
automated and you are talked through it. It comes with a large subwoofer
and it is a really high quality sound. The sound bar can be placed on the
wall, or it can sit on the table in front of the TV. This positioning has
no ill effect on sound quality due to the technology inside, it adjusts to
its position. The Soundbar though isn't cheap but you truly get what you
pay for. It isn't large just over a metre wide and about 7 or 8 inches
deep. The Subwoofer is Bluetooth and connects automatically when turned on.
As I said, it isn't cheap, it is £1,300 in the UK, around $2,100 U.S. You
can get cheaper soundbars but they are not so good and the Sonas Soundbar
doesn't come with a subwoofer. You can get much more expensive soundbars
but you have the rear speaker problem but with the SR1 you don't. The SR1
has a big brother but it is nearly double the price but I don't think the
sound quality is any better but you get a number of other benefits but in my
view, none that merits the nearly doubling of the price. It is really worth
your while going and having a listen and judge for yourself. Walter

could give a description of what a soundbar looks like.

I'm getting a bigger Television for the lounge so time to move the smaller
19 inch set I have into the den, I'm thinking about placing this on top of a
soundbar, would be near perfect.

So does the soundbar just sit on the floor, on a shelf, mounted on a wall or
what?

RE: Soundbars

2014-05-09 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi Dane. When I said the Soundbar is 7 to 8 inches deep I meant from back
to front. The height from the table top is only around 2 inches. It comes
with booster feet if your TV has a stand so it can sit over the TV stand but
you don't need to use these booster feet. If the beginning of the screen at
the bottom of the TV is more than a couple of inches from the top of the
table then it will be OK. It can even sit on a shelf under the TV as it
won't bother the sound quality. To let you know how it is set up; you are
provided with a headset, just like a pair of headphones but without the ear
cups. You place this over your head like a headphone band. This is
connected by a wire, a very long wire, around 15 to 20 feet in length. When
you plug it into the soundbar it tells you it is ready for the set up and
explains what it wants you to do. When you are ready you press the up
volume button and it begins. It asks you to sit in your 1st listening
position. When you are there you are to press the up volume button. You
then hear various frequency tones of differing sound levels and intensities
being first emitted from the soundbar and then the subwoofer. This goes on
for around 10 to 15 seconds. When it stops it then asks you to move to your
second listening position and again to press the up volume button and the
routine is repeated. You do this for 5 listening positions and when it is
completed there is a pause for around 20 seconds while the onboard processor
calibrates the internal speakers When it has completed the process it thanks
you and lets you know you can disconnect the headset. When I did this my
first listening position was in the position I would normally sit. The
other 4 positions was at the four corners of the room and this gave such a
wide sound stage. My living room is 27 feet in length and my listening
position is more or less in the middle and the soundbar sitting flat on the
table in front of the TV. It was baffling to hear sounds coming from 12 or
13 feet to my left or the same to my right. The sound of a car or a jet
taking off across the soundstage was impressive as you heard it travel the
length of the living room. The Headset obviously contained sound sensors or
mics to allow the sound to be analysed. Would strongly recommend the SR1.
Walter.

those things, not as good as the BW system I have but still not bad!

Interesting about the placement of the unit, that was something I had been a
little concerned about, I don't know how the Bose Soundbar would go in front
of my small 19 inch Television, given the measurements you've given I
suggest that part of the screen would be blocked so perhaps the TV could sit
on top, what do you think?

Hi Tom. It is like most things in life, you get what you pay for. If a
soundbar at $150 improves the sound quality from your TV then I guess it is
worthit. each person must decide what they can afford and act accordingly.
If you have your hi-fi in your living room where you have the TV then
feeding the TV through the Hi-fi will greatly improve the sound quality. I
think it should be noted here that Soundbars are designed to give a
particular cinematic sound and in my opinion if it is for listening to music
seriously then a good hi-fi is the better option. If though it is to use
with your TV or DVD then a soundbar is a good investment. If you are going
to spend a lot of money then you would be wise to audition the soundbar
first by visiting a reputable dealer. There are soundbars to suit every
pocket the sound quality will generally match the price. Walter.

Yep folks, I've finally decided what Dock I'm going to buy, I'm after a new
one given that I no longer have any IOS devices with 30 Pin connectors
though the only problem there is I have 3 units with 30 pin dock connectors,
I'd be absolutely raging! if those devices couldn't be put to other uses and
were only useless 30 pin docks smile.

My decision has come down to the Bowers Wilkins Z2 iPhone dock/airPlay
speaker though I warn everyone now, the price for one of these gorgeous
things is not cheap, at around $400 but - from what I've heard - its
certainly well worth the money spent.

The Z2 sports a 9 pin Lightning connector, has an Aux-in socket and can be
used with airPlay.

I'll write more when the device arrives and I can test it with my Wi-Fi
network etc.

I use DVD Shrink; it's old, but rarely fails. Allows you to only
pick parts of the disc (like the main film but miss out the
trailer, for example) and choose things like which subtitle or
audio track/s you want.

ALso, as the name suggests, will if needed compress the video so
it will fit on a standard writable disc.

WinEx DVD ripper

2014-02-04 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi folks. Although I'm in no hurry I intend getting a reasonable DVD
ripper. I've tried in the past to use Magic DVD ripper but that isn't easy

came across WinEx DVD ripper. There is a free version and a platinum paid
for version. I have downloaded the free version but haven't yet installed
it because at this moment I have no DVDs to rip. I intend buying the 5 DVD
disc series Cosmos and I will want to rip them to my hard drive. I would
like to know before installing this WinEx DVD ripper if any of you have had
experience of it. According to a web site I found, not connected to the
WinEx web site, it is simple to use. The paid for version can defeat DRM
but it seems not the free version but that doesn't matter because I don't
think the discs I will buy are DRM protected. I really just want to know if
the programme is as easy to use as has been stated. If you have used it or
still use it could you please share your experience as it would be very
helpful, thank you. Walter.

Help with Winamp Crossfader please.

2013-12-25 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi to all. Recently I have reinstalled Winamp and also the SQ crossfader
plug in. I used this a couple of years ago or more and with reformating
etc I never got around to reinstalling it but now I have. Thing is, I
forgot what configuration I had on the crossfader plug in. Someone on this
list kindly helped out but unfortunately the instructions he sent got lost a
long time ago in a motherboard crash. I've done a little playing around but
as I don't really know what I'm doing I don't know what is the best
settings. I have found there is no save or OK button when I've adjusted the
configuration of the plug in, only a close button. I thought when pressed
this would save the new settings but it seems not because when I went back
they were as they were when the plug in was installed. Anyhow if any of you
use the crossfader and have any suggestions as to which is the optimum
settings or the settings you use I would appreciate your input. Out of
interest, I like a gentle, smooth transition between tracks. If any one can
help then I thank you. Walter.

Arcam internet radio accessibility

2013-11-23 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi All. back in July all my electronic equipment including hi-fi,
computers, radios, telephones, everything electronic! was fried when my home
was struck by lightning. It took around 8 to 10 weeks to get the insurance
thing sorted out and buy new equipment. I decided to take the opportunity
and upgrade my stuff and I now play my PC through an Arcam Solo Neo mini
system with Cord interconnects and cord speaker cable driving the B W CM8
speakers. I have a higher end system down stairs in the lounge but for this
room up here it is adequate, in fact very good. It has taken me until now
to turn my attention to some of the facilities of the Arcam Solo Neo. This
unit has FM radio, DAB radio, A CD player; this CD player is what it says it
is, a CD player. It won't play MP3 discs but it has a USB port for a pen
drive so it is unimportant that the CD player won't play mp3 discs. It has
a power output of 75w per channel and has the ability to feed speaker
systems in different parts of the house, if that is your thing. The bit
that interested me the most is the internet radio so I set about finding out
if a blind, a totally blind person can access it. Via the unit it's self
the short answer is no as there is no verbal feedback and the menu system is
too complicated to memorise so unfortunately I can't use the main unit for
internet radio. The good thing though about it is when you do get into the
radio stations you can use your up and down arrows to browse through the
stations. However the positive thing is, although I can't access the
internet radio via the Solo Neo, I can do so through the arcam internet
radio web site. When up and running you can browse stations via location.
If you choose this option then you can scroll down through countries which
are put into continental blocks. So, if I scroll down to North America I
have the choice of Mexico, The United States or Canada. I chose the United
states. When in there the list is broken down into states and you are
informed by each state how many internet stations are available in that
state. For example; Tennessee had 63 stations but Virginia had 129. When
you click on the state you want then the list gives the name of the station,
what kind of station it is and location. When you click on play you are
connected immediately. You can create categories for your favourite
stations i.e. news, talk, music or sports etc. and these can be saved in
your favourites section. Interestingly what you do on the website is also
duplicated on the Arcam unit itself. So when on the website I've so far
created two favourite categories; Talk and Country. Now if I could use the
main unit I would find these options there also. The website is completely
accessible but the Arcam Solo Neo is not. If you have an Arcam product such
as the Neo then you have to get sighted help to register it buy inputting
the unit number and creating an Arcam account but it is fun not having to
search for internet stations on the web where things can be hit or miss.
Here you have a list of stations you can connect to with ease. I hope this
information is helpful. Walter.

Lin out/in discrepancy

2013-10-05 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi all. This is just a fishing exercise to see if anybody has experienced
the same problem and if they found a solution. I have a custom built
computer and I play my music on my external drives via the PCs line out and
into the line in on my Arcam Solo Neo mini system. When I play a CD or use
the DAB radio on this system the quality is good and I can play it at a high
level. However when I switch the source to the input I use for my PC the
volume level is much lower. If I boost the volume to the point I like it
but for get to turn down the volume before I move to CD or DAB then I very
near blow off my wig. I have all the volume sliders at max in the control
panel but the volume is still too low.

The only way I have been able to remedy this problem is to use a headphone
amplifier and this helps raise the volume but not equalling the CD or DAB
volume and I guess since these are integral to the system they are not using
a line in source. The piece of kit I'm using is the Arcam R-Pack DAC and
headphone amplifier. I tried the line level connection with good quality
inter connects but this didn't increase the volume of my PC. I then
switched to the headphone output which has volume controls and this helped a
lot. Has anyone encountered this problem and if so, did you resolve it and
how did you do this? Walter.

I've just purchased a number of old-time radio shows on cd. I want to copy

I have Nero burning Rom, but I can't find an option to copy a CD onto my

any ideas?

Hi. I've purchased the Arcam BDP300 Blue-Ray player. It is a good machine,
large in dimentions but very high spec and very high in price. Here in the
UK it retails at £999. Walter.

Hi!

This subject is of great interest to me, I've built a Hi-Fi system for the
den and I'm still looking around for a decent and flexible Blueray player.

I was listening to the tech show on KFWB ad a caller came in with exactly
the same sort of question I have, Can You recommend a good BlueRay player?
and the answer was a Sony Play Station III.

I can understand the presenters thinking here, the Play Station III has
plenty of processing power and is updated frequently by Sony, all fair
points.

Having never seen a Play station III I'm wondering if others have seen them
and can perhaps give a brief description, I'm of the understanding that the
size of a Play Station III is around the size of a typical set top box, is
that right? Can the Play Station be controlled to play Blueray Discs from a
remote control unit or perhaps buttons on the front?

Laptops and audio quality

2013-08-01 Thread Walter
Hi to all. Last Friday lightning struck my home and wiped out nearly all my
media equipment, including my high spec PC and my Toshiba laptop. I will
need to replace those and as audio is my main concern I would like to ask
the group; in your opinion, which laptop, or laptop manufacturer produces
the laptop with the best audio output. I will be playing this through an
external sound source such as a Bose soundbar. I live in the UK and I would
say the max budget is £1,000. Apart from the sound quality, the processing
power would need to be fast as I do a lot of file transferring and
downloading. Opinions welcome. Walter.

RE: stereo amplifier

2013-07-24 Thread Walter
Hi Elizabeth. I think you are going to have to provide a bit more info.
What is available depends on so many factors, not least your location. If
you are in the US then members from the US will be best placed to help you.
If you are in the UK, Australia or New Zealand or south Africa etc then
those members will be the best people to advise. In addition what
specifications do you require and what is your price range. NAD over the
years have become less popular as the quality of the product has declined
but there are still some around. Personally I would recommend Arcam if you
are in the UK but they are very expensive but the price just reflects the
quality. I don't know if Arcam is available in the US or the other places I
mentioned but they are easy to get a hold of in the UK but you would need to
visit their web site to get a list of dealers. If you went for something
like Arcam or any other mid range to high range product you would really be
wise to audition the amplifier first. If you are looking for budget
amplifiers then Sony, Pioneer, JVC, Marantz etc all do good products. If
you are really interested in sound quality then looking for a amplifier with
digital inputs would help such as optical or coaxial inputs. If you intend
linking your phone to it then I don't really know if any of the amps would
have USB inputs. One final suggestion; if you are in the UK then try Richer
Sounds as they always have very good deals. Walter.

RE: cloud player

2013-07-02 Thread Walter
Hi Ray. No, when you download whole albums either from the site or from the
cloud player you still need the Amazon downloader. You can as I understand
it download a single track without the downloader but not a whole album,
unless you want to download the album track by track. However, if you have
the downloader installed then even downloading a single track will launch
the downloader but if you don't have the downloader you can only download
one track at a time. You don't have to download any tracks though and you
don't need the downloader if you are only going to play tracks on the cloud
player, you only need the downloader if you want to download a track to your
computer, apart from that you can use the cloud player as your music player.
You have 5gig free space but you can purchase more if you wish, up to 1TB
but that is expensive. In essence, you need never download any music to
your computer and in fact any music you have on your computer can be
uploaded to the cloud player. I guess you could look at the cloud player
as an extra usb drive but without the physical drive but in the long run I
think it is expensive but it might be the rout for some. . Walter.

I think you might need sighted help to see the download link for the
downloader. I do know when I purchase an mp3 file or album I then see the
link for the downloader but my tame computer guy saw it before that but it
is there. As for Cloud players being the future? In the UK if you wanted
1tb of storage on the Amazon cloud then it would cost £320 per year, that's
$486 per year, a lot of money that will never cease and may only go up. If
it were a more economical option that would be different. Also, not all
cloud storage is accessible for the blind and there is no sign of them
becoming so unless there are plug ins and or work arounds. Here in the UK I
can get 2 Seagate 4tb USB external drives for the £320 Amazon wants for 1TB
of storage and the External drive is much more accessible. Walter.

I guess you could look at the cloud player
as an extra usb drive but without the physical drive but in the long run I
think it is expensive but it might be the rout for some. . Walter.

Hi. No, you don't have to play anything. You don't have to download the
cloud player, it is a part of the Amazon site. What you would need to do is
download and install the Amazon downloader because you will need that to
download whole albums but you don't need to download anything to play music
that is on your cloud player and you don't have to play anything to get to
it. Here's my suggestion; Go to www.amazon.com. Sign in and if you are
redirected to the UK site, ignore it.
Find the combo box where you select the catogory of the items you want to
search for, in your case,
MP3 downloads. Then tab to the edit box and typen in Tony Christie. You
can type in anything; the Beatles, The Eagles etc, it is just to get you to
the results page. Once there look for the link that will take you to the
cloud player and press enter on it. If you can try that and then get back
to us and let us know the result. By the way, have you purchassed any music
from Amazon's mp3 downloads in the past? Walter.

RE: issues with the amazon cloud player

2013-07-01 Thread Walter
Hi Ray. Well not knowing exactly what difficulties you are having and not
knowing what part of the world you are in I can only let you know my
situation. I am in the UK and I'm using Win7 64bit with JAWS 13. When I go
to www.amazon.co.uk/cloudplayer I must sign in and once I've done that I
then can tab or arrow down and I get all the information that is there. I
am told how many tracks are in my cloud player, how many more I can add (my
purchased tracks are not added to my total, only tracks I import and I've
not done that). I am also told how many genres are in my cloud player, how
many artists, albums etc. I can creat play lists or search for a particular
track or album and I can either choose to play or download them or only
selected tracks. I did have trouble at first trying to download because it
seemed I had to go into my tools menu and enable download alerts and once I
did that all went fine. From where I stand at the moment I find the Amazon
cloud player completely accessible. After I send this mail I'm going to try
www.amazon.com/cloudplayer and see if I still get complete access. If you
are not in the UK and are trying to download from the UK site then i can
understand it not allowing this due to boundary restrictions. I do know if
I go to the amazon.com site and try to purchase mp3 files, it won't let me.
Walter.

RE: Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar

2013-06-27 Thread Walter
Hi. I don't know where you are located but here in the UK the Bose Cinemate
1SR cost me £1300 but as I have a good relationship with the dealer I asked
for and got a %10 discount so it in reality cost me £1170. If you are in
the states then Amazon offers the Cinemate 1SR for $1499. The Bose
Lifestyle 135 in the UK is £2400 and again on Amazon, is in the states
$2400. This makes the Lifestyle 135 cheaper in the USA than the UK when you
take into consideration the exchange rate.

As I commented on in my original post a lot of the features in the 135 were
of little use to me as a blind person but if you want music around the house
and the ability to control the base unit from anywhere in the house plus the
garden and not forgetting the IPod or Iphone dock then the Lifestyle 135 is
the way to go. I don't need any of these features; the only feature I would
use is the extra connections but I didn't consider the extra money worth it.

I have run a few CDs through the sound bar and it has a very open and
spacious sound. When I got it first we ran the adapt IQ for the first time
but the next day I ran it again and it made a huge difference. My Hi-fi
system consisted of 2 mission 753 floor standing speakers set about 15feet
apart and I got a very wide sound stage. Now they are no longer there but
the sound bar is giving me as wide a sound stage which is rather strange
because I know there is no speakers to the left or right but I'm hearing
vocals and instruments from the far right and left and I know there is no
speakers in there. If I had surround sound speakers there then my brain
would acknowledge that but there isn't. there is just a soundbar measuring
36 inches long by 2 inches thick and 4.5 inches deep. That is with the
Sound bar sitting on the TV table, just under the TV. The soundbar can be
wall mounted but this does not effect the sound quality, The 1SR's adapt IQ
detects it's orientation and as the name in plies, adapts. Walter.

 Betreff: Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar

Hi all. You might recall a while back I asked if anyone had any
experience of
the Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar as I was at that time contemplating
purchasing one. Well I have purchased it and have just got it set up and
running this afternoon. It is too early to say if I'm completely happy
with it
but so far, so good. A couple of points I will make for those who find
themselves in a similar situation to myself and are thinking of going down
this road. The Cinemate 1SR has a big brother called The Lifestyle 135.
This is nearly double the price but in truth it isn't worth the extra
expense
from my point of view. It really depends on what one wants to do.
The Cinemate 1SR is limited to 2 inputs, analogue or digital. The digital
has
two options, coaxial or optical. The Lifestyle has more inputs around 4
HDMI
inputs and I think two analogue inputs of the RCA phono variety plus the
optical and or coaxial options. It also has a back lit remote control
which is
RF rather than infrared as it is with the Cinemate 1SR. Both controls
have
learning capabilities and can be used as a universal remote.
The Cinemate 1SR remote is not back lit. The Lifestyle 135 can run
speaker
systems in 14 different locations around the home plus can run a speaker
system outside the home but these extra speakers are not part of the
package and have to be purchased separately. Personally the extra inputs
weren't worth the extra money, nearly double the price because I can't use
a backlit remote regardless of how clear the display is. I don't want to
have
 speaker systems in 14 rooms, I don't have 14 rooms and I don't want a
speaker system in the garden, it would get pinched. So all I would be
paying
extra money for would be the few extra inputs. Added to this, I would use
inputs for mainly listening to music, I understand that HDMI audio isn't
very
good as it is subject to jitter and that many manufacturers are investing
a lot
to solve this problem. So all in all I went for the Cinemate 1SR.

As things stand my TV has a coaxial out socket and that is wired to the
digital
input on the soundbar. I have my Laptop

Bose Cinemate 1SR speakerbar

2013-06-25 Thread Walter
a little bit of time running it
through it's paces but I think I will quickly get used to it and come to
enjoy it more and more as time goes by. The Bose Cinemate 1SR and the
Lifestyle 135 are very very popular here. The guy from the dealership help
me set it up and said they have sold loads of the 1SR and the Lifestyle 135
whereas despite an expensive TV campaign for the Sonus alternative, they
have only sold 2. When you feel the speaker array you wonder how it can
produce so much sound in such high quality in such a small package? The
fascinating thing is, the speaker array can either be placed on a wall or
can sit flat on a table and you get exactly the same high quality sound
reproduction. The Speaker array knows it's orientation and if I were to
lift it and put it on the wall, it senses this and compensates and you get
the same sound as before, very clever. I hope this information has helped
anyone who might be considering going down this route. Walter.

 Accessibility
 Interface
If a screen reader is active when starting GoldWave, the program
 automatically changes
its interface slightly to be more screen reader friendly. Screen reader
 mode can
be switched on manually by using
GoldWave Setup in the Windows Start menu and checking the
 Force screen reader mode box.
 The status visual in the
 Control window
becomes a text box that gives the elapsed time, the current status,
 and the peak
levels (in parentheses). The levels are reset whenever playback or
 recording is restarted.
The levels are given in percentages, but tabbing to the text box and
 pressing
D changes it to decibels. Pressing D again changes it back to
 percentages. Press
R to reset the peaks. Press
 P

 keys only
work when the status visual has the keyboard focus and the keys have not

Hi. I really don't care about surround sound as the way my living room is
set up it isn't feasible and I don't have any interest in movies, or TV. I

I've heard it at Best Buy. I love the stereo image, but for surround sound,
I prefer a real surround sound system. With 6 actual speakers. Or 8 for 7.1
which you'll need for some Blu-Ray movies. I'll reserve judgment on it since
I havn't heard it with an actual movie. All though like I said, I prefer a
real system. If we want to go with Bose, if I were you, I'd get at the very
least the Lifestyle T20.

Hi folks. I for a number of reasons am thinking of investing in the Bose
Cinemate 1SR speakerbar. This item is rather expensive and although I
listened to it in the dealers for around an hour, it isn't the same as
personal experience. The product with it's Bluetooth subwoofer sounds very
good and it is supposedly very simple to configure. If you have heard or
had experience using it I'd be grateful for your comments. As I said, it is
rather expensive and the model with the higher specs is nearly double the
price. I read on review on line about it and it is impressively simple to
set up and it can either be wall mounted or lay flat on the table without
any deterioration of sound quality. The opinion of the reviewer was it was
a bit over priced and the latest Yamaha equivalent was better. Opinions
sought and welcomed. Walter.

2013-04-23 Thread Walter
Hi. I don't know where you are located but here in the UK , in the 1980's
there was a battle between two video recorder formats; Betamax and VHS. At
the end of the day VHS walked away all out winners. Now the battle is
between HD (High Definition) and Blue Ray. Both do the same thing, give
extremely hi quality video and use multi layer discs but are different
formats. Now one can argue till the cows come home which is superior but
here in the UK Blue Ray has grabbed the high ground. As Express Burn is
produced by an Australian company and they offer a Blue Ray burner then I
assume that Blue ray is the dominant format over there. It might be
different in different parts of the world, I don't know but despite Blue Ray
seizing most of the market here, I don't see many Blue Ray blank discs. In
fact, getting blank DVD discs and CD discs is getting a little harder, there
is not as much choice as there once was. Since people either stream movies
or music or download them and play them via there PC and TVs there is less
need for the trouble of burning discs. Walter.

Help please with Roxio Easy VHS to DVD converter

2013-02-19 Thread Walter
Hi Folks. This request is on behalf of my sister who is also blind but
knows nothing about computers and her husband, although sighted is totally
tech illiterate. They have some VHS videos they wanted burned to DVD, and
some LPs and audio cassettes which this programme can do also. To cut a
long story short they bought the Roxio easy VHS to DVD converter. It seems
though they don't find it easy. They have asked me if I would install the
programme and do it for them but as I'm totally blind, I don't know if I
would be able to do it, even with the help of my brother-in-law. I've not
used any Roxio products and I have no idea how accessible this programme
will be. I use JAWS 13 on a win7 system. Have any of you ever used the
Roxio Easy VHS to DVD converter and how did you find it to use if you did
and would a blind user be able to use it? Your help and any tips would be
appreciated, especially by my sister. Walter.

Hi folks. Just acquired a new high spec computer, I say high spec but I
think the sound card isn't up to much. I'm considering moving over to using

Have any of you on this list used one and what was your impression? Also,
what DAC would you recommend (I'm thinking here of high end and not budget)
and are these things plug and play or is there any software to be installed?
Opinions and suggestions please! Walter.

RE: files question

2012-09-23 Thread Walter
Hi. If you do a Google search you will find the programme easily, it is a
very popular file converter and it is free. When you download and install
you will have the full version for a trial period. When that period runs
out you will be asked if you wish to purchase a license or revert to the
free version and you can make your choice which you wish. The free version
has limited file association compared to the paid for version but in my
experience, the free version does everything I need to do. Walter.

Ipods and MP3 files

2012-09-20 Thread Walter
Hi to all. I have never owned an apple product and as far as computers are
concerned I've always worked with Windows. I am however contemplating
purchasing an Ipod classic 160gig mp3 player. Since I'm unfamiliar with
apple products I have a few questions. If I purchased an Ipod and wished to
load it with MP3 music files from my own collection is it a simple matter of
copy and paste? Does the Ipod show up on my PC as a removable drive? If
this is not the case must I use some sort of conversion tool to accomplish
this such as an Itunes file transfer manager and if so, how accessible is
it, would I need Jaws scripts. Can I transfer music onto the player and
delete files without any connection with Itunes.? I don't want to spend a
lot of money and find I am unable to simply transfer files to the Ipod.
Your input will be much appreciated. Walter.

RE: Prism Video Converter

2012-05-05 Thread Walter
OK folks. I guess I had better explain this. Someone on this list a while
back asked for recommendations for ripping DVDs. I was one of the
responders and recommended Magic DVD. Arthur then sent me a copy of Prism
and I've installed it and have it up and running. However I've been
communicating with Arthur privately about the use of this programme. I have
a BBC DVD box set I want to rip to my PC. When I used Prism I got the
message it couldn't open the file and the reason might be it is probably
encrypted. I then tried with a DVD my PA brought in with her and I tried
ripping that with Prism and got the same message. Arthur gave me some
advice but that didn't work either and I still get the same message. I have
the trial version of Magic DVD installed and that ripped the video my PA
brought with her although the quality was garbage, I need to tweak the
settings. I'll do that once I decide if I'm going to buy it or not. Magic
DVD ripper says they have incorporated inscription busting properties in
their programme and they can be updated. I was wondering if perhaps the
problems I'm having with Prism is due to the programme not having the
ability to negate encryption on the disc and that was the point of my
original mail. I couldn't remember Arthur's email address and lazily just
did a reply to the mail he posted here forgetting the email would go to the
list and not to Arthur alone. It could be that part of the problem I'm
having with Prism is my not knowing how to use it properly, the help files
didn't give a great deal of help but in truth, I don't know the reason.
Walter.

the best video converting software I've seen on Planet Earth thus far both
for Windows and Mac operating systems, so easy to use and accessible.

Howdy!

Okay, I've missed something so someone explain to me please the subject line
when we're talking about something completely different?

Magic DVD Copier or Magic DVD Ripper have absolutely nothing whatever to do
with Prism Video Converter, Prism converts DVD formats, Magic DVD Copier
copies DVD's and Magic DVD Ripper Rips DVD'S to your computer smile.

Hi. Why not try the JBL Control 2.4g cordless speakers. The pair I have
are phenomenal and I love listening to them, I never get listener fatigue.
They should cost around $210 and if you try them out you won't be sorry,
they are very small but you will listen to the power and volume that comes
from them and then feel their size and disbelieve what you are hearing could
possibly come from speaker so small. They also come with wall mounting
brackets which allows you to adjust their angle in relationship to your

Work with what? I have only had the control 2.4g speakers which are RF
speakers, one is active with it's own amplifier and the other is passive. I
haven't heard of the On-Tour speakers. I can only say that I am mightily
impressed with the quality of JBL and when the day comes to replace my
Mission 735 floor standing speakers, I will spend the necessary money to get
a high end pair of JBL speakers as a replacement. The Control 2.4g speakers
are a perfect match for working with my PC. Incidentally, they also have an
input for line in so you don't have to use the RF feature and also it has an
output for a sub woofer and I've linked up a 10 inch warfdale subwoofer to
work with them but if they were to be used as monitors for editing then
there is no need for a subwoofer. Walter.

Hi. You won't be sorry about getting JBL. I have a pair of JBL active RF
speakers and they are incredible. They are small but so powerful and the
quality of sound is unbelievable. I use them with a Warfdale 9 inch
sub-woofer and the resulting sound is wonderful and that is linking them to
my PC. They also can be driven via line in but I use the RF option and it
is surprising how good the sound quality is for such small speakers. In
fact I have a high end Hi-Fi system in my living room but the combination in
many ways matches and sometimes surpasses the highe end stuff. I'm sure you

Hi!

Just ordered one of these speaker systems, expecting it Monday so I should
be able to give you all a good wrap of the device then.

This system is Airplay compatible thus you can stream music or video from
your Mac, Computer or IOS device to the system, also contains an aux-in jack
and a USB port for those people who don't have Airplay devices.

Has an iPhone/iPod/iPad compatible dock so you can connect the device
directly if you so desire.

You're looking at around $200.00 in the U.A. for one of these systems and
that to me is a bargain.

There is a JBL system above the Onbeat Air called the Onbeat Stream, its
a little more powerful and will also allow bluetooth streaming, had I known
of the existence of this model then I probably would have bought it, ah well
at, at least I can keep saving and its like the old story with the Altec
Lansing Expressionist Plus and Expressionist Ultra speakers which worked
themselves out in the end smile.

I've never owned nor heard - consciously at any rate - a JBL speaker system
before, I'm told I Don't know what I'm missing? We'll see come Monday.

RE: How to convert RAR. files to MP3?

2012-01-05 Thread Walter Ramage
Hi. You can't convert .RAR files to MP3. .RAR files are a kind of digital
envelope. It is a compression tool for multiple file types. If you have
say 100 files you want to send to a friend, some might be WAVE, some mp3,
others might be .AVI or Flac etc. The point is you can compress all these
files into one zipped file and in the process it compresses the files to a
smaller over all size making it easier and more convenient to upload. To
compress and then extract the files you need a programme called either .zip
or 7zip or winrar. Windows XP has a built in basic compression tool as does
windows 7. Walter.

Hi. To compress a number of files, first select them, or it might be a
folder as you can compress the folder with the files in it. Then go to your
file menu and then arrow up until you find Send To submenu. If you then
arrow right, then arrow up, you will find an option calledCompressed zip,
press enter here and the files you have selected will be compressed into a

I don't think Windows XP has anything built into it that can handle RAR
files. You can create and uncompress ZIP files through Windows manager,
just check out the File pull down, but not RAR files. I think this is
also true with Windows Vista and Windows 7, but I'm not sure about that.

compress and then extract the files you need a programme called either
 .zip
or 7zip or winrar. Windows XP has a built in basic compression tool
 as does
 windows 7. Walter.

RE: Removing Hiss From Audio

2012-01-02 Thread Walter
Hi Danny. When in Gold Wave go to the Effects menu and then to filter
submenu and then to noise reduction, you will find various options and one
of them will work I'm sure. Walter.

Subject: Removing Hiss From Audio

Hi all. I've recorded a voice track for somebody on my DS40, but you
can hear the hiss of the room around me underneath the vocals (no
actual noise, jus the hiss of quiet). Obviously this doesn't sound
like professional trailers, so I'm wondering if anyone can please
advise as to what is causing the hiss to occur and/or how I might
remove it using GoldWave (using the smoother functions doesn't
completely remove it). It shouldn't be the quality of the mic as I'm
using an SM58.

Thanks for your help in advance, Danny

RE: Winamp, more help, please!

2011-12-17 Thread Walter
Hi. Barry sent me a link to a different version of the plug in and it
worked first time. The plug in from the source I got previously is
obviously unstable. Walter.

Well, none of that should happen. heheh. I've had trouble configuring
plugins with non-standard interfaces. THe winamp metroska/mkv one seems
particularly suspect and only works about half the time anyway. I'm getting
to the point of resigning to the need to use something like VLC for movies,
but I don't really know if that's a concern for you or not. I haven't tried
the crossfader plugin..maybe I'll give it a go and see for myself..but the
spacebar should definitely activate the configure button under just about
all circumstances.

Hi. It is difficult to say. It seems to crash if I do something it
 doesn't
like, there's no patern. I installed the crossfade plugin and have
 selected
that plug in but each time I go to the configure button and press the
 space
bar, after it thinks about it, it asks me if I want to send an error
 message
or not. I' say no then I get the message the programme is not responding
and do I want to end it, once I say yes to get out of it, I am asked again
if I want to send a error message. Maybe you are right, I need to
 uninstall
and then reinstall. The version Ihave now is the standard but maybe I
should select the full version next time. By the way, when I see the
configuration button, I've tried various ways to activate it without
 success. Just hitting the
Space bar, pressing the enter key, using the key command Alt+C, I've even
Routed PC to JAWS and used the mouse keys, again, still crashed. Walter.

Hello Walter. Long-time winamp user here, and I find the programme to be
extremely stable. Sometimes though something does seem to happen to the
programme and the only thing that will fix it is a reinstall. This
 happened
to me a few times after getting v5.6 or something, but after installing to
the latest full version I haven't had this problem. Anyway, out of
curiosity, what sort of errors are you getting?

Hi Barry. Thanks for taking the time to explain this. I'm having
 trouble
getting the hang of Winamp, I find it crashes a lot and I get a error
message. Once I become more comfortable using the thing then I will
 venture
into the plug in thing. How and where do I install this plug in? What
folder does it go into or is it self install? I appreciate your
 patients.
 Walter.

 Hi Walter,

You need to install the SqrSoft Advanced Crossfading Output plugin. You
 can
get it from the Winamp site at
 http://www.winamp.com/plugin/sqrsoft-advanced-crossfading-output/32368

Once installed, you will need to open the Winamp preferences with ctrl+p,
arrow up or down until you get to output, tab to the list
of choices, arrow to the Sqrsoft plugin and press enter. In output, you
 can
also tab to configure where you can adjust various
 crossfading and other parameters.

I understand your frustration of learning a new program, but Winamp is
 the
player I use the most. Some of the controls are a little
unconventional, but I think once you get to know how it works, you will
 like
it for its simplicity and versatility.

 Thanks,
 Barry Chapman

Hi everyone. Since I last posted on this subject, I have uninstalled
 Winamp
and decided to go with MaPLEr but I'm having trouble paying for the
 thing.
I think I'll get the problem solved and will use both MaPLEr and Winamp
 but
I have since reinstalled Winamp. I'm a stubborn so so so will do what
 I
can to crack it. I'll read through the JAWS help topics etc but in the
 mean
time, I've set the contents of the library to shuffle mode

RE: Ehh. more winamp help please

2011-12-16 Thread Walter
Hi Barry, that will be helpful. Unfortunately I tried while in the Playlist
editor pressing Control and N to get a new playlist but nothing happened, in
fact pressing control and N anywhere got no response. I'm beginning to
think I need scripts but have no idea where to find them. One member gave
me a blind tunes link but I couldn't find any scripts there. Walter.

Hi Walter,

I think your specific question has been answered, but something you might
find useful as a JAWS user is the following.

When focussed on the playlist editor:

1. Press Insert+w to get a list of shortcut keys.

2. Arrow down the list to hear each of the keys and what they do.

3, Press escape to close the window.

You can also get help about other JAWS and Winamp keystrokes by pressing
Insert+h.

Regards,
Barry Chapman

Hello to all. Can someone explain to me how to create a play list in
Winamp. I'm using JAWS 12 and EXP home. I am making some progress with
this programme, slowly but the help some of you good people have provided
has been of great value.

I've tried to find something that will allow me to create a play list and
the tutorials I've found on the net contain video and the person is using a
mouse with something different from Classic skins. They also drag and drop,
not something I'm able to do, I know it can be done with JAWS but I don't
know how to do it. Their must be a simple way to create a playlist. I've
tried many times, I've resorted to banging my head against a wall but that
hasn't helped any either LOL. Hope one of you can though. Walter.
