Hi!
Since my Dad passed on in July my intentions are to digitize some of his
vinyl collections.
Not only for sentimental reasons, also because he had some vinyls you can’t
get from anywhere.
So my questions are:
What kind of vinyl player should i get?
I think i read on this list that usb turntables are no good and i guess this
is because the sound of the dac in the turntable?
But if i by the new rega planar 1 2016 i guess i get a good player for the
money or do i have to get up in price?
The next thing is the Ria amp for the turntable.
That has to be good enough but not in the expensive part of the price tag.
Sadly i am not made of money *lol*.
So any help you can give me are very welcome.
Thanks in advance.

I mean that I’ve just acquired one, the radio itself is around 40 years old but
now its been fully aligned and you can hear the results for yourself.
Unfortunately weather conditions around the country - as you’ll hear - are a
little unstable right now, lots of lightning etc so I think the RF2200 did a
fantastic job at reception overall.
What makes the RF2200 unique is the rotating ferrite AM antenna on the top so
you can nut out other stations in the background to an extent.
The RF2200 has very finely tuned circuits which make the radio hotter than a fire
cracker when it comes to AM reception, very reasonable on short wave and okay on FM
though not as good as many of today’s modern-Day FM radio sets though that’s to be
expected given most now use DSP technology which certainly wasn’t around 40 years ago
.
The sample was made using the microphones of the Olympus DM4 and you may notice
a little echo since the Olympus recorder was some distance away from the radio
to avoid any additional interference being added to the sample.

Hi. I can't get my PC to send sound to my stereo system's speakers. Let me
explain. You'll soon see that I'm less than an amateur at this.

The default speakers on my PC are MM1s. As many of you know, they don't rely on
any on-board soundcard. Eight years ago, my PC was also connected by wire to my
stereo system, in another part of the room. My PC has since been replaced, and
that connection to the stereo was lost. For better or worse, the guy who
installed the stereo ran the wire behind the wall, up over the ceiling and down
to the back of the stereo. (My apartment was being completely renovated at the
time.)

As far as I can tell, that wire hooked into my Pc's microphone jack. I can
confirm that there's a wire that comes out of the baseboard that does seem to
correspond to the microphone jack. It is now plugged in to that jack.

However, I still can't get the stereo to play. As I said, the MM1s are my
default and I want them to stay that way. I've tried to configure the on-board
soundcard to work with my stereo speakers, but without success.

That's the best I can do to explain the problem. Can anyone suggest a solution
or tell me where I've gone wrong?

Thanks.

HDMI, it's great when it works, but it has a little thing built in called
High-bandwidth Digital Copyright Protection (HDCP) which you will find will
stop you doing some of the things you mentioned: like you can listen, but you
certainly can't record and definitely not copy. And because of that, it refuses

I'd just love, like yourself, to keep it simple, but it simply isn't going to

Good quality audio from computers, TV's and interfacing that with AV units or
amps has historically resulted in multiple complexities and it's only people
like us who may know a little about these things that gain the benefits.

One day you will with no understanding whatsoever about technology , be able
to play audio from any device through your home system, without even thinking
about it.

I really couldn't tell you what was the best method of drawing all these
threads together and with every year, it's getting even more complicated.

Wouldn't it be nice to buy a good computer with high quality sound and you
could simply download audio from Itunes or otherwise, listen to it and edit it
and post it again without any effort whatsoever!

That's a thought which I'll have to ponder some more. I know desktop
speakers for PC are nearly always rubbish but the ones Dane linked to are an
exception. But a separate amp or receiver for my PC is a possibility.

My PC is in a den too as my wife banned PCs from the living room so instead
I've got a high end set up in the Livingroom similar to yours minus the PC.

Believe it or not in my PC room/den I used to have 2 PCs with 2 sound cards
each going through a sound mixer and then output through an amplifier and
stereo speakers. That was in the days when I used to broadcast on internet
radio. The 2nd PC was a backup for when things went wrong with my main
machine which sometimes happened. Anyway, I've simplified things since then
getting rid of redundant equipment. I now have one of the few self-amplified
5.1 systems that can plug into a sound card without an amplifier. I also use
a splitter to a little transmitter that lets me use the old-style wireless
headphones and portable speakers so I can have audio from my PC in other

If you've not taken a serious look at the Spotify Music platform in a
good while - and you like your music just the way you want it and not
how your local radio station wants it - then take a good look at the
modern Spotify.

I won't go into all the changes I noticed since I last saw it before
today but the changes are numerous and these changes have really given
me something to think about regarding the other Music services I'm
subscribed to, it might very well be that you'll find that Spotify will
provide your each and every need for your music listening habits.
particularly if you're a Spotify Premium user.

I used the Spotify IOS App to do my exploration, I found accessibility
to be first class.

Right now I'm listening to the "Soft Rock" playlist on Spotify through a
Spotify connect device, the Sangean WRF28D portable radio.

Connecting the device wasn't hard to do, I just selected Spotify from
the Source list for the radio using the Undok App, I then opened the
Spotify App from Undok and used the Connect icon at the bottom of the
screen to locate the radio, the music started playing through it when I
double-tapped the "Play" icon.

Association Options, select Add 'Enqueue & Play' to Winamp's associated file
types, and Insert enqueued files after the currently playing file. There is
a situation where Windows prevents this item appearing in Windows Explorer
in favour of Windows Media Player. There is a way around this which I can
describe later if necessary.

2. Probably the easiest way of achieving what you want is to let Winamp add
the song to the end of the list then do the following. Move to the song you
want your newly added song to appear after then press j and search for the
newly added song. Once you have found it, tab to an option for Move after
current.

No it's primarily the DA converters that are better suited for audio

Perhaps but you must understand that learning about Mac OS and VoiceOver is
only the beginning.

If you had no experience with windows, you would accept that the awkward
way things are done in MAC OS is normal but with a little experience of
windows you will find yourself trying to work out the mind set of those who
devised the OS and VoiceOver.

However, given your experience in windows you may find that something like
audio editing has a steep learning curve. Yes, I know that Garage Band,
Amadeus Pro and Twisted Wave are very good audio editing programs for
sighted people but for a blind person they can be very frustrating.

The question you should be asking yourself is: is there anything that I
would want to do that can only be done on a Mac and, if so, is it important
enough for you to justify the outlay, considering that most of the things
you might want to do are possible through your I Phone.

Anyhow, excuse me while I duck around the back to avoid the arrows and
flames of the Apple fans!

Hi Devon and Hamit.

I've always wanted to check out a mac computer but because ive been
so brainwashed in Microsoft, I didn't have the self confidence to
try it out for myself.

What I was thinking was to keep my old Windows machine active for my
mail and so on, but the Mac could sit alone in another room and if I
spend some time each day, then I should be able to grasp the basic?
eh? Especially if I joined a blind mac list.

One thing I have already found out that my Imac Store, which is in
glasgow, will spend up to an hour with a new customer in the shop.
Perhaps they may be interessted in offering me a little more start-up
time, given my blindness? Worth checking out eh?

Thanks for your ideas guys. For the meantime, I'm going to check out
everything I can on the Imac Retina on the webpage.

Thanks again.
Andy.

Apple has a getting started guide, right when you turn on a new Mac.
Just wait a minute or two then follow the spoken instructions.

Hi all.

I love everything audio concerning my computer. I've music,
described movies and talking books and I use programmes such as
Goldwave to record streaming music. I also love burning the odd CD
for a friend and recently, I've purchased a Zoom H6 digital recorder
for even more interesting audio work.

Many of my friends, who are not blind are telling me to buy the new
Imac Retina and plug that into my AV and sound system.

Any members use Imac for this sort ofstuff and is there any support
for a new comer like myself about.

Any advice would be very much appriciated.

Very best wishes.
Andy.

true.

I did buy Winamp Pro, that’s how much I liked Winamp at one time however that
was quite some time ago and since that time Winamp became very bloated and I
started having crashes when I tried to play video, not just on one machine
either and I discovered the incidents of Winamp crashing weren’t isolated so
time to go looking for other players.

I also enjoy using Windows Media Player and a lot of people I’m sure will say
that this player is straight forward.

And don’t tell me that Winamp has features that no other player does because
that’s just not true.

And finally I’ve not tried the latest Winamp for Windows though I have
downloaded the Mac and Android versions so may look at those a little later on,
anyone here tried the Windows version yet? Perhaps you mightn’t be so wrapped

I might consider springing for the Pro version if I knew that it was

The Airdroid App has to be first installed on the systems it will be used with

You can take calls, send/receive SMS messages, browse files on your Phone etc

Added to this is a web page so you can do a lot of that control remotely.

The only problem I’ve found with Airdrop is that its behaviour varies depending

Re: RTX Dualphone: Good For Skype And more

2015-10-24 Thread Hank Smith, and Seeing-eye dog Iona

will this work with sip?
if not what cordless phone or usb hand set would you recommend?
Hank

On 10/24/2015 5:25 PM, Dane Trethowan wrote:

Hi!

I’ve had the RTX Dualphone for well over a month now so that’s given me plenty
of time both to use and explore the system, find its strengths and weaknesses
which I present for your evaluation and comment.

I use 3 different cordless phone systems in my house and I do wish that all the
features and functionality of all three systems could be combined into one but
the fact is this won’t ever happen given that the price of such a system would
be one very few people would be willing to pay.

The RTX Dualphone is the system I most often use as it gives me connectivity
between two Skype accounts and my PSTN line as well as a few bonuses I’ve found
along the way.

The first is that the Dualphone works very well with Hearing Instruments
whether you wish to connect them externally through the 3.5MM headset jack or
use the T-Coil of your instruments if applicable, the sound is very loud and
has quite a wide dynamic range, something to be expected I guess given the
phone is to be used with Skype but such a dynamic range makes a great deal of
difference when talking to people via a standard landline call which the
Dualphone handles quite nicely.

The layout of the phone is simple enough, to soft keys left and right of a
navigator key with, a call end end key above a standard numeric key pad.

The Soft Keys change their function depending on what mode you’re in but I
found these changes easy to remember once I’d read the layout of the menu
structure and so forth which is clearly outlined in the manual, as yet I
haven’t experimented as to whether the number buttons will act as shortcuts in
the menu system.

Setting the Dualphone out of the box is the hard part as this device doesn’t
come with a HTML Interface so setup will have to be done with someone who can
see the screen but the steps are in a logical order and easy for anyone to
follow.

The Dualphone first asks for information about the country it is to be used in
along with a matching country code. The code determine the structure of
outgoing numbers when using a Skype account or PSTN line.

The Phone then prompts for a Skype Username and password and its here that I
found things get a bit tricky. The password is easy enough to enter using the
key pad however the password must be 10 characters or less in length and I
didn’t see any reference to this in the manual, I only found out about this by
trial and error.

Once all the user data is entered and saved the phone logs into Skype though
you can choose if the phone automatically does this upon startup.

Making calls using my “Skype-Out” number was easily done by dialling the number
on the key pad and pressing the “Call” button. By default the Phone prompts
the user which line to use for dealing, the “Skype”-out or “PSTN” number,
“Skype-Out” is highlighted as the default so pressing of the left soft key has
the phone use Skype for dialling, you can change the default behaviour in the
settings menu of the phone so that you’re not prompted and the phone just uses
Skype or PSTN at the touch of the button.

I also discovered that if the “Call” button is held down in “Standby” mode the
phone by default will use the PSTN line for dialling which is handy to know for
emergency situations.

One of the small annoyances with this phone is that you obviously don’t know
which of your contacts is online at any time so dialling them directly using
letters on the key pad really isn’t an option but this is trivial for me as I
bought the phone really to be able to answer calls at those times when I was
away from my computer and this is easily done by pressing the “Call” key as you
would with any other cordless phone when you hear a call come in.

At this point the left Soft Key acts as a toggle between the speakerphone -
which is quite reasonable - and the earpiece.

An Apple compatible headset can be connected to the Dualphone thus allowing the
use of an external microphone built into the headset and the use of the “End”
button found on the inline control to answer/end calls on the phone.

Ring Tones can be selected to personalise the phone for both incoming Skype and
PSTN calls.

The phone has a good range of tone selections as well as flexible tone

What I did was to set up a VPS and installed Shoutcast, then wrote some

on the structer of the streamer software, be it Shoutcast or Icecast,

upload

the audio files to the appropiate folder for each playlist and create the
calendar file that the server needs to run each playlist at a certain

time,

with the backup of the list called "rotatio" to play when another playlist
is not playing, before the next scheduled one begins.

There is a learning curve, you have to read a lot about either Shoutcast

Icecast, but once you master it, you can run your station from

pre-recorded

files as I do. You would still need Station Playlist Studio if you or

one

of your presenters wants to do a live program.

Hi!

Quite some time ago I wrote to the list bemoaning the fact that a good Desktop
phone seemed incredibly hard to find, at the time my 12 year old Panasonic
desktop phone had died.

Another list member suggested that I lookup the range of Polycom products, a
most useful suggestion though I found something that - whilst it wasn’t exactly
what I had in mind - it nevertheless will be of great benefit, I’m talking
about the Polycom Skype Hands Free conference speakerphone, I received it this
morning, its now set up on my desktop and is better than I ever thought
possible.

The first thing that struck me about this phone was how small it was, it could
fit easily into a jacket pocket and even comes with a carry pouch so its
completely portable.

The phone plugs into a USB port on a computer, has 2 microphones on the bottom
and a speaker at the top.

The USB stores away rolled up under the desktop stand the phone rests on.

On the front of the phone are various buttons including volume up/down, a
button to answerer/end calls and programmable buttons that can launch various
applications or tasks, you can turn your webcam on for example.

Whilst the Polycom Skype phone is at home on a desk with a desktop computer I can’t
help feeling - given the size of the device - how handy it would be for the user of a
Notebook who is in the road, often in such cases Notebook speakers and microphones
just don’t cut it when you need to use them for such things as Skype, the Polycom
Skype Conference phone will do the trick in say a hotel room, the specifications
state that the phone will pickup the voices of 4 people in a room, haven’t had the
chance to try that yet .

you go in to the preesets tab of the configuration, and
choose radio, then press the load button, then locate the close button

tab, move the signal analyze thing down to negative 15, and in the fade

Media House is freely available so certainly worth a look.
