Re: best way to play/stream music through a house?

2017-03-30 Thread Robert Godridge
We will have a sony docking thingy (I forget which moddle) in the living room.
I'd love to be able to send the audio from my mixer wirelessly to this
or through bluetooth. I'm a record collector and have my turntable
hooked up through my mixer as well as my computer, which is able to
listen to my turntable/rest of my mixer through phono cables. Does
this make sense?

The Echo is ok for casual, or background, listening but if one wants to enjoy
a lossless stream or files the Echo's sound quality is less than adequate.

I'm just curious, what would be the best way to play/stream audio throughout
the house these days?
Does anyone know of any accesseable wireless speakers for example, or streaming
servers that can be used with them?
I'd rather not have to use i-devices but my wife does have an iphone.
I'd like to play flac etc too...
Just curious...

I'm glad you mentioned the echo, as I now have both Google Home and
Amazon echo assistants, I believe that - if streaming through your house
is your thing - then a Google assistant is certainly worth having.

You can use your Google Home Assistant to stream to Chromecast
compatible devices and these range from the original Chromecast Audio
and Chromecast itself to speakers with Chromecast built-in, Televisions
with Chromecast built-in etc.

Suppose you had a Chromecast device connect to your entertainment
system, you could say something to Google Home Like, "Okay Google Play
ABBA on Lounge'.

Google home would then respond with something like, "Okay Playing ABBA
From Google Play Music on Lounge" thus the music you then hear would
come through your lounge entertainment system enabling you to continue
using your Google Home for other tasks.

You could use a modifed version of the example above to use Google Home
to stream your favourite radio station to your lounge so let's assume
that you want to hear KNX 1070 Los Angeli's you could say, "Okay Google,
Listen to KNX 1070 Los Angle's on Lounge".

You could use your computer as the hub and the sound car shouldn't
matter as you could use Software to capture the audio of your player or
- as I said arlier - you could use Windows Media Player etc.

So now we know you are thinking of using your computer we can talk about
other equipment you may have in your house that you wish to stream to,
have you got an amplifier or some sort of entertainment system in the
louge that you fancy streaming to for example?

I have a very analog setup, an old numarc mixer with a generic

I like the idea of Cast To I'd not heard of it!

Re: best way to play/stream music through a house?

2017-03-30 Thread Dane Trethowan

You've plenty of options.

AirPlay is getting rather old now and - as you'd rather stay away from
iDevices - then AirPlay is really a No Go option given you want to play
FLAC and the like.

Perhaps it might help if you could give us a rundown of equipment you
currently have or you think you might use, you've said your Wife has an
iPhone so that alone indicates that integrating Apps into your streaming
system would be a nice option? That can be done.

If you're using Windows 7 plus on your computer then you can stream
content by using the built-in Cast To Device setting in Windows or
Windows Media player itself using DLNA

There are heaps of DLNA compatible speakers around or - if you'd rather
use your existing amplifier - then a Tuner/Streamer attached to it -
preferably using a digital link - would be a good and logically option.

Further to all of this you might abandon your computer for storage of
your music and choose to use a network compatible hard drive which gives
you more flexibility, the ability to stream your music remotely and so on.

This brief introduction - for want of a better word - only scrapes the
surface.
