Congratulations. Sound good. My 2880 is still humming along, but I think Ill eventually go for a P800. Would like to make some 16x 20 prints. My P600 arrived today! It’s true—the black and white prints do pop—as do the color. I printed both color and black and white on the Epson metallic glossy paper, and it really looks nice. I just finished printing some black and white Velvet Fine Art in both letter and 13 x 19 inch paper. Very nice. As to loading paper: It’s BETTER! Yea While there are a few extra steps, these steps are so inconsequential. Once you pop out the front manual loading tray (not a problem to do), I think loading the paper flat and guiding it through is less anxiety ridden than the other process on the R2880—easier to get the alignment right. In the 6 prints I just made, I did get one “paper askew” notification, but that was due to user error. I also set up the wireless printing with AirPrint on my iPad Air. Easy-peasy! I printed a flyer I made using Pages and had saved as a JPEG. I wasn’t expecting the color to be that great—but I was wrong: the color is very true and really pops. I printed it from the Photos app, and I printed it on some premium matte paper. The set-up was a breeze. I was expecting complications, but there were none. I may have mentioned that they painted my office, and I have been doing some serious printing and framing of my work on my office walls. The dedicated color wall is moving along nicely, but I only have two large prints on my dedicated black and white wall. The progress is slower here because a) I’ve been thinking that I want to shoot some new stuff specifically for the B/W wall and b) I knew I was seriously thinking of getting the P600 (provided I got some good PDML reviews, which I did) and wanted to wait for better prints. Well, now that the printer has arrived, I will probably reprint the two prints already on the wall and replace. I really like the quality of the B/W on the Epson Metallic Glossy paper, so I may do more printing with this paper. For Mac users, you have to download all the driver stuff from the Epson web page. Immediately after, I checked for any updates, and those appeared and I updated immediately. When I opened Lightroom (most current version on the iMac (non Creative Cloud)), everything was right were it should be, and I went through all my usual selections. I have the Creative Cloud version of Lightroom, Adobe InDesign et al on my MacBook Pro w/Retina. I haven’t set up the P600 on that yet, but will do soon. The only real problem now is space in my home study. The p600 now sits on the only flat work space I had. This would change if I got rid of the R2880, but I’m not willing to do that—at least for now. More to the point, I’ve been thinking a lot about my so-called creative space: right now it’s just filled with a jumble of stuff. It’s a mess. I may have to take some time to rethink my creative space, so it’s more pleasurable to work in—more efficient. Easier to think about, but much harder to reconfigure! So, I recommend the P600—and I’m looking forward to trying some of the hot & cold press papers. Oh, and I love that I just had to press a button to switch to the matte black cartridge. Gosh, I hated switching out cartridges on the R2880. The actual switching out wasn’t a big deal, but waiting for it to register, so you could choose the appropriate paper was often frustrating. RE: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
I've owned Pentax cameras (with one exception) since 1968, and have never had cause to complain. Like all mechanical or electronic items, they can break and need repairs, but I've only once had to send a Pentax camera in for repair! I expect to be using my current crop (MZ-S, *ist-d, K5ii-s, SV and a couple of other older models) until hell freezes over. I'll be sorry if Ricoh do drop out, they've done some good stuff in the last few years - BUT, they do need to market! The fact is at my age my Pentax kit will probably outlast me, so I'm good to go! I doubt if it will affect me much, if at all. I anticipate buying at most one more traditional DSLR - I don't feel tempted by the K1, but might be interested if there was a follow-up APS-C model with most of the improvements from the K1 (and, no doubt, a few more as well). If that doesn't materialise I'll probably either stick with what I have today or switch over to Olympus; the EPL1 has served me well over the years, but is several generations behind in sensor technology (though still good enough for casual everyday use ). -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Who knows, Japanese companies are notoriously cagey about such things. I expect that they make the most money on the higher sales price items. The problem is Ricoh needs to produce an entry level camera that's good enough to hook users and lure them into higher profit upgrades. I suspect that they actually sold more K-5 cameras including K-5II and K-5IIs cameras than they actually sold K-500 cameras. In point of fact, the K-P looks like an entry level camera in a lot of respects disguised as a flagship APS-C camera. Fit finish and materials are probably up to K-3 levels, while the actual working hardware is actually derived from the K-70. Start it at a K-3 price grab back as much development cost as possible from early adopters then let the price drop to entry level. That could actually work if the camera feels like a pro level camera. I must say that's one of the things I like about the K-5II. It's one of the most professional feeling cameras I've held in it's class. Almost no one needs more than that, and those who actually do /need/ that kind of resolution aren't enough to sustain the mass market, they buy Phase 1 backs for their medium format cameras. and pass on the costs to their clients. For everyday use the camera in the average Cell phone is good enough so the market for stand alone P cameras is dead. The Megapixel race has become pointless, image quality is now better than good enough, and has been for two generations of camera sensors, and anyone who's had to pour over several hundred almost identical frames probably doesn't figure that they need faster than say 7 to 10 frames per second, damn that's too much like work if you're doing it for fun. That's the state of the current camera industry. Most people already have the camera they perceive that they need. Which is why the market for advanced cameras is contracting. I mean really, look at this list, how many of us are still using K-5 family, or earlier, cameras. I mean sure a K-3 would be a small boost in frame rate a bit improved AF, and actually a significant boost in resolution, at very little cost in image noise, but I don't covet it, and a used K-3 sells for not much more than a used K-5II. More importantly we're not the typical user base, we're more likely to want the latest and greatest. IT looks like the mirror image of a Pentax lens, so either they did something stupid in post production, or there's a manufacturer who used and exact mirror image for their bayonet lens mount. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Ricoh is probably not still building K-3II cameras but they are still officially in production. Even with Ricoh owning the Pentax name, Pentax was and is a small player and I doubt that they can build more than two different models at the same time. The K-1 and K-P are currently being built. The K-3 III, or something, will be produced when there are either enough of the previous two models built to satisfy expected demand until their planned replacement is released of Ricoh decides to leave the Camera business again... But we /know/ there will be a K-3 replacement and the K-P isn't it. They promised. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
True, but with the current situation the biggest competition for the newest camera is it's previous generation. A lot of people who didn't live through the Camera Craze of the 1970s when SLR technology made it possible for everyone who wanted one to have a semi pro level SLR, at prices that were insanely affordable. Most of those cameras and lenses were mechanically reliable, and optically capable of taking photos as good as the most expensive system cameras, in the right hands. Unfortunately most people who bought them didn't have the right hands. It actually took talent and dedication to make good photographs, (who knew). Those cameras ended up in attics, basements and the back shelf of the bedroom closet. For a long time if someone wanted a good semi pro camera, they already had a friend or relative willing to unload a pretty good SLR cheep. The camera market crashed and a lot of manufactures left the industry, Ricoh being one of the last to give up the ghost before the age of Digital Photography. Now it looks like they /may/, (notice the weasel word), kill the original Pentax brand and technology base where before they only killed their own take on it. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
NIkon is cutting back too. Canon may be fatally wounded, though like the conceptual dinosaurs of the 19th century, (which they still taught when I was in school), it's too big to know it's dead yet. Digital cameras whether DSLR, Mirrorless or Old Fashioned RF, have reached the level of sufficiency for pretty much every segment of the market. 12 to 16mp serves for most serious amateurs and even many professionals. Most people don't need that and aren't willing to shell out hard earned money for incremental improvements. Re: Stunning News for Pentax - Ricoh
Notice the word "may" in the headline. That's a feature of the 11th commandment, Cover thy ass. With that headline the writer and editor are admitting that they have no idea what Ricoh is actually going to do. Admittedly it's not good that the imaging division is having resources moved to other more profitable operations, but Ricoh's core competence is office machinery, copiers in fact, and even that division is having trouble in the current market. I wouldn't say you shouldn't worry, but, I don't think that even Ricoh upper management has any idea of what to do at this point. On 4/12/2017 9:55 AM, Gonz wrote: Well that sux. Well, I think I know what this is; it's what's known as "firfisle" around here, i.e. a small lizard. The thing is (the sad part), I don't think he was sitting so still because he was pining for the fjords, but rather had passed on, ceased to be, expired and gone to meet his maker, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible, and so on. Perhaps nothing extraordinary, either, but I actually saw 15-20 of these in a similar state, all on a pawed path. This made me wonder what was going on. I mean, perhaps these poor creatures just didn't make it through the winter, but I think it's a bit strange to find several of them "in the open" like this. They folded their own SLR production before. Let's hope they don't do that again. What would Sigma do if they bought the Ricoh imaging division, put their proprietary lens mount and the Fovion chip into a K-3 body? Great ergonomics terrible performance in every other way and a lens mount that never took off. Hooray! The ideal situation would be that they drop their lens mount and sensor and just produce all of their lenses in K mount, with Pentax coatings and weather sealing. By the same token, I could also make a joke that was actually funny.
