Ah, but what about when Apple answers the 108-megapixel Samsung Galaxy

2030 is about 7 Moore’s cycles in the future, so with the current one at 12MP,
iPhones should still be under a gigapixel by 2030.

Not a problem. They will get around physical limits through a
combination of: pixel-shift, software interpolation and extrapolation,
and with current upward sizing trends, by 2030 the latest iPhone will
be about the size of a sheet of drywall.

If they can make fake bokeh sort-of usable, then they can easily make
fake outlandishly huge resolution nearly usable.

Re: PESO - Olivia

2020-09-13 Thread Bruce Walker
I've got plenty more failed attempts I could post to help reset
expectations back down to manageable levels, Bill. :-)

I don't disagree with you that the way she's got her shoulders sloped
and the angle of view together do not make for the best overall shape
for her. It's hard to unsee that now.

Maybe foreshortening was the wrong word for it. All I know is the
closest objects appear the largest which makes shooting down on people
an iffy proposition if one is trying to avoid distortions. But it's
also an angle that gets you a unique perspective and has some
advantages like bringing the floor into play as a background. Jane
Bown was fond of doing portraits by getting her sitter on the floor
then standing on a chair to shoot down on them. I see lots of examples
of that in her Faces book. They look a bit odd, but worked well enough
for the newspapers she worked for.

lets call green light 500nm, so if I do my math right, a square sensor 60,000
photons on a side would be 30 um on a side. So, that kind of sets a bottom
limit on how small that resolution sensor could be.

Re: My new Pentax

2020-09-13 Thread Juan Buhler
Hahaha. Sadly, I sold my KP. I wasn't able to fall in love with it. Sold it
two years after buying it, with under 600 clicks on the shutter.

This is after shooting for years with the istD, K10D, K5, K3. I have all of
those still, except for the K3.

The age of my eyes, the size of the cameras, autofocus speed and commitment
to photographers have determined I move to Fuji. I do have a GRII and also
tons of SMC lenses so there's that.

RE: My new Pentax

2020-09-13 Thread jcoyle
Nice story Juan, and the ME range were (still are!) great film cameras. I
bought two of the original ME's when they came out, one of which was later
stolen in a burglary here in Australia, some 20 years afterwards. I still
have the other, although the meter is no longer reliable, so I only use it with
flash. My own experience of recreating my first Pentax was to find an "as new"
SV in a camera store in Adelaide, for which I paid A$250 - but what a gem!
Still in perfect working order, and it came with the second version clip-on

retro.
I'm sure you will enjoy that experience too!

Subject: My new Pentax

My first real camera was an ME super with the M50/1.7. It was the silver
model, just like probably 99%+ of them, at least thatś what the proportion
of silver vs black ones seems to be.

I don't have that camera anymore, and while I still have my two black MXs,
I've always missed it a little.

Last week, browsing ebay, I saw a black ME super. Described as "untested",
and with the brassing in the bottom plate described as "rust." $30 buy it
now, but accepting offers. I offered $25 and got it. Still a gamble, I
thought most probably I was buying a $25 paperweight.

Well, it arrived yesterday, and after exercising the shutter a little bit
and putting some new batteries in, it all works! It was awesome to see
those little LEDs come to life as soon as the batteries went in.

So while I've moved to a Fuji X-T30 for my main photography (this is the
closest you can get in digital to the feel of an MX, btw!), today I am
going out with the ME-Super and a roll of Fujicolor 200. Plus the MX-1 just
to shoot some DNGs as well and keep it Pentax.

Just look at this beauty:

Lovely - and I think you may be right about that Fuji!

Here’s the MX I bought new in 1979, gave up smoking for a year to pay for it. I
don’t have the 50/1.7 lens it came with - that was among a ton of stuff that
was stolen in 2000. That’s the 40mm pancake lens. I also have a 24-35/3.5 Lens
and a Winder MX. When I got the stuff out just now to take the picture the
wonder started whirring at me, which was a surprise as I didn’t realise it had
batteries in. I took them out - they are dated Mar 2002... now in the battery
recycling jar. The strap is an LX strap, the tripod an original Marchioni.

The shopkeeper replied with a sly smile, 'Well, little lady, why don't
you go give it a try?'

The blonde headed off to the swamp, determined to catch an alligator.

Later in the day, the shopkeeper was driving home, and spotted the
young woman standing waist deep in the murky water, shotgun in hand.

He saw a huge 9-foot gator swimming rapidly toward her. With lightning
reflexes, the blond took aim, shot the creature and hauled it up onto
the slippery bank.

Nearby were 7 more dead gators all lying belly up. The shopkeeper
watched in amazement as the blond struggled with the gator.

Then, rolling her eyes, she screamed in frustration..

”Sonuvabitch!! THIS ONE'S BAREFOOT, TOO!”

Re: PESO: Crocodile Skin Boots & Shop Steward - Wrap up

2020-09-13 Thread Alan C
Thanks to all who looked & commented. The subjects are about 50m
distant. Harsh light. I Couldn't get closer without breaking the rules.

Yes, Rick, I have the same problem. I think it is drooping down
underwater towards the bank. That massive croc. has been hanging around
for some time & seems to be the only one. There is also a lone Hippo.
Sable Dam is fed by local perennial streams & is far from the Letaba &
Olifants rivers so it is amazing they are there at all. They probably
moved upstream during a rainy season.

Saddlebilled Storks are generally found in pairs. I'll wager that is a
male & his mate is sitting on eggs in a nest on top of a thorn tree
somewhere nearby.

I thought the first stage of manufacture required two crocodiles.

Wouldn't the other one be beneath the one we see in the photo?
