What I miss in the K-1

2017-03-15 Thread Dario Bonazza

1) A buffer size that is appropriate for K-1 files
2) A writing speed that is appropriate for K-1 files
3) A way to see the live view image in low light with rather high speed and
stopped down aperture (e.g. a dark studio environment when shooting with
flash units at say 1/200 F8). Just amplify that signal as you used to do in
the K-3, instead of simulating an underexposure that won't happen!
4) A useful and comprehensive top LCD panel, just like the one on the K-3
(that's more useful to me than the multi-dial thing)

5) Dust Alert image. Where has it gone?

All those features were present in the K-3 and lost in the K-1. Why?

Re: K-1 review rehash

2017-03-15 Thread Dario Bonazza
Never used that new double-dial thing, intended for features I never use
(except ISO, which already has its own button) . That said, I find that dial
more annoying than useful, being often turned by accident when taking the
camera out of the holster bag. The same happens with the photo/video lever,
often turned unintentionally from photo to video. I find the K-3 interface
better conceived, straight and effective. However, the best one is the K-5
series, where all controls are direct and you can access them by touch with
you eye at the viewfinder. Most of all, why swapping the Play and LV buttons
over previous models in the K-1? Whichever of the two (either LV or Play)
you press by accident when looking through the viewfinder, you get the
screen on in your face. Is Play any better than LV in that event? I don't
think so.

Dario

Eight months after I started it, I sat down to try and finish up my K-1
review. I thought I sent it to the list, but it seems that the email
monster ate it. If it never does show up, and people are interested,
I'll give it another try, I'd certainly like to get some other
viewpoints on some of the things I've noticed, or possibly answers to
some of the questions still hanging.

It's interesting to see how my perception of certain features has
changed in the intervening time. When I first got it, I thought the
third control dial was really awesome, but now I rarely use it.

It's also interesting to be reminded of all the features that I thought
would be great that turned out to be useless duds, like wifi and tethering.

Subject: K-1 Banding abd RAW file Issues

A couple things I learned about the K-1 and Pixel Shift Mode:

The banding I was experiencing is the result of the electronic shutter
and artificial light. It's just a rolling shutter effect. I saw it in
Pixel Shift mode since that uses the electronic shutter, but setting the
camera to use the electronic shutter in standard resolution / live view
mode will also produce the banding. With the incandescent bulbs I used
in the test, the banding was worse at higher shutter speeds but seemed
to disappear at speeds of 1/15th or slower. Here's an extreme example -
pointed the camera directly at a 30W mini flood light and shot at 1/8000
/ f2.8:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/pentax-k-1-banding?blog=9

So, I have to figure out some form of lighting that will not cause
banding. The incandescent bulbs that I tried seem to be the worst
offenders, so I'll go back to LED's. I was thinking that DC powered
LED's would not flicker, but testing that theory on some DC powered
led's in the house showed that they do. I do have some led flashlights
that do not produce banding. And there's an old propane lantern around
here somewhere...

The other thing that I learned (which is actually rather embarrassing)
is that I had not actually seen any pixel shift results till today. I'm
using PS CS6 and ACR 9.1.1. K-1 DNG raw files open just fine in ACR
9.1.1 but the pixel-shift magic does not happen. Apparently you need ACR
9.5 or higher before the pixel shift enhancement takes place. Compared
to in-camera JPGs or DNG's processed in silky pix, the difference is
very clear. So while I was impressed with the results I was getting with
the K-1, all I was seeing was the improvement inherent in the sensor
itself and not pixel shift resolution.

ACR 9.1.1 is the last release that works with Photoshop CS6, so I either
have to update, start using SilkyPix or shoot JPG's. I just figured out
how to do batch processing in SilkyPix and will use that for the time
being.

Re: Pentax K-1 video

2016-02-27 Thread Dario Bonazza
That camera was never shown with a designation at the time it was under
development. During Photokina 2000, someone at Pentax told me its project
designation was MR-52. However, being the digital sibling of the MZ-S, we
all take for granted that its public name had to be MZ-D.
Then, nothing for years and years... and then, over the last year or so,
it's put on display again at fairs in Japan with that K-1 name on it. So I
think of that name as an "official fake" by Pentax, with the purpose of
relating current products to that ancestor.

Both the D-FA 24-70/2.8 and the D-FA 15-30/2.8 lenses appear to be rebadged

However, the most famous lens designer working for Pentax during the
FA*-series era (Mr. Jun Hirakawa, designer of the FA* 1.4/85mm) now works

Paul, its a Tamron lens, and is supposed to be pretty good. Pentax puts
their own coating on it.

The forthcoming 15-30 and 70-200 are also Tamron lenses. They are also
supposed to be good.

But in some ways Pentax never learns. They are still putting the SDM label

So what are Pentax's lens designers doing?

I have a friend who is serious/knowledgeable about photography (knows
her aperture from a hole in the ground), but who is also rather
financially challenged. I recently realized that her camera (EOS 40D)
is getting old enough that it should be possible to get here a fairly
significant performance upgrade without spending lots and lots of money.

However, I know almost nothing about the Canon lineup. Does anyone have
any recommendations for Canon SLRs, probably used, that offer
exceptional performance for the cost?

For example, a 40D seems to go on KEH for $160-210, so my guess is that
something in the $300-400 range might give her a significant boost in
performance. I just have no idea which bodies are considered winners
and which ones generally suck.

Her passing was peaceful and apparently painless and for that I am eternally

This is my favorite photo of her. She was 23 years old here and just

Hello all,

Last week, my performance (actually, mainly Giulia's performance) went very
well, and now my photo exhibit will be over soon.
It's been fun and I do hope I'll have a video to show you all rather soon.
In the mean time, here is the catalog of the photo:

Comments welcome.

Oh, those Pentax pages after the pics are there because Italian Pentax

Beautiful work, Dario. Some very striking imagery there. I especially
admire the image of the model bisected vertically with mud (?), and
those projected equations.

Looking forward to the movie. :)

Hi Everyone:

Tuesday night, my dad—Charles S. Aguila--passed away. He was 84 and had
been suffering with congestive heart failure. My dad would have fit right
in PDML. He had a great sense of humor, was extremely generous, told funny
stories, and was a solid photographer in his own right. Someday, I’ll scan
some of his slides and post them; they are really quite good. He used to
shoot with a Minolta—I think. I don’t know if his camera is still in the
house.

Some of his funniest stories were about his paratrooper days. Dad served in
Korea, and when his tour was completed he reenlisted in the reserves, went
to jump school, and served as a paratrooper in the 12th Special Forces. He
never jumped during active duty, but he completed 60+ jumps during his
reserve service. He also earned Canadian wings during jump school training
in Canada. After 31 years of military service, he retired Master Sergeant
E9.

He is 81 in the photo below. When I took this photo three years ago, I
thought for sure he’d be around for a good while longer. He looks so fit
and young for 81. But in the last year and a half, his health turned. He
died at home with everyone near by and surrounded in love.

Love you, Dad! Miss you tons!

Help - Nik software

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of restoring my Win7 system after a hd breakdown. A pain!

Well, one of the many problems is I lost that Nik software (Color Efex 2 +
Silver Efex 2) that Google allowed to download for free just one year ago.

Is there a good soul having that original installation package and wanting
to supply me a copy?

Thank-you, thank-you so much!

here is more or less the following:

We do several shooting sessions in very different environments (wheat

field, clay lake, clothing store, studio, etc.) and each of them is
seen as a different dream of mine.

As you know, dreams depend on you but you cannot take true control of

them... that's the same with Giulia. I arrange the shooting, but then
she takes her freedom to move change the way she behaves there. She
never stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish,
just like dreams. And I try shoot them like fixing a dream when you
awake before it's gone forever.

At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more.
In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the

feelings, the movements and the situations she experienced in the
different photo shootings. Then she will perform that solo in a dance
festival here in Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed
pictures on show and then also behind and in front of a screen where
other pics will be projected onto. That show will be the opening event
of the festival, with me on stage shooting her performence. So photo
dance will merge once again, in an endless loop. Exciting, isn't it?

Hi Larry. I ama aware of three possible reasons:
1 - You hit 500 photos

Last night I saw the Red Elvises play in Santa Cruz. It was a very fun
show, and I ended up taking pictures. I loaded them into lightroom last
night, and when I went through them this morning, a whole bunch were
missing. Going back and looking, Lightroom had only read the ones out
of the 100PENTX directory, not the 101PENTX directory.

First of all, this seems to be a bit of a lightroom bug. However, what
causes the camera to change from storing photos in one subdirectory to
another? Is it when I hit 500 photos?

takes her freedom to move change the way she behaves there. She never
stays still... moments and situations come and go and vanish, just like
dreams. And I try shoot them like fixing a dream when you awake before
it's gone forever.
At the end, we will get a photo exhibition, and much more.
In fact, Giulia will also create a solo choreography inspired by the
feelings, the movements and the situations she experienced in the
different
photo shootings. Then she will perform that solo in a dance festival here
in
Italy on September 12, dancing through the printed pictures on show and
then

also behind and in front of a screen where other pics will be projected
onto. That show will be the opening event of the festival, with me on
stage

shooting her performence. So photo dance will merge once again, in an
endless loop. Exciting, isn't it?

Holding out... true. Well, in fact lately I use to post my pics either on

there will be more than someone disliking that. Also, my new (cheap) website
structure only allows low-res pics like these:

http://www.dariobonazza.com/danza_14.html
In brief, I'm afraid I'm not set to show you my pics in a way there won't be
someone asking for another better way to do that.

On the other hand, in the past I had the feeling my pics didn't raise so
much interest here, hence I didn' care so much and I was content enough to
keep posting to the PUG.

However, now I'm going to start a new thread explaining my project with

Hi Mark, I'm not sure you wrote which camera. I see that the results with
Pentax flash units are mostly dependant on camera models. When trying P-TTL
with AF540FGZ, I got so-so results with the K-20D and completely
inconsistent results with the K-5 series*, while the K-3 seems to work very
well.

Thanks again - I just tried more testing of the flash on the A* 200 and
got totally inconsistent results. I walked through the house and
randomly fired test images. There were three times when the flash
suddenly started working and kept working for a few frames - then it was
back to 100% total discharge. I put the flash on the DFA 100 and it
worked fine, all the time. With the A*200 lens I got about 30 correct
exposures out of 170 test images.

There is a long thread on Pentax forums about this issue that is full of
inconsistent observations about the AF160FC. It seems clear that people
are having wildly different experiences with this flash. Since the
manual says The correct flash output in obtained in P-TTL auto mode
only when the flash unit is used with auto-focus lenses. I don't think
I can claim it is defective, so - back to BH it goes!

Just to double check - that's with a manual focus lens?

It looks like I should ask Pentax to confirm how this should work and
maybe get a replacement.

Let's say you take a picture of a street scene. For some reason you don't

notice the reflection in the window of someone walking past. They are
moving
well more than one pixel per shot. What does that end up looking like?
It's not just blur, it would be like a quadruple exposure?

Or, you are taking a landscape photo. You don't even notice the wind, or
that the tree branches and leaves, or the flowers, or the grass, is
moving. Now rather than having more color depth at each pixel, a lot of
the frame has the blur of a quadruple exposure.

I do wonder how it would work in connection with the astrotracer, or if
it would.

the forthcoming FF Pentax won't have one either. Considered

When the K-3 came out once feature that contributed to the press

with the K-3 I can say that I only turned the AA simulator on once, to
see what it would do. On my camera, it does make a distinct sound during
exposures when enabled... Otherwise I have never used it, but I really
don't shoot many images where there is fabric or other things that might

Subject: PDML Photo Annual 2015 coming soon!

We're on the verge of starting up the presses for the 2015 edition of
the PDML Photo Annual. The process we've developed and refined since
2009 is working well, so there won't be any changes this time round:
Send us three photos – one will definitely get into the book, two if
you're really good or we're really desperate ;-)

This year (or next year, as 2015 still is at this point) we're hoping
to get the book done a little earlier than in the past couple of
years. The delay with the 2014 book was from Doug Brewer's
unfortunately-timed cancer diagnosis (so inconsiderate of him!) and I
for one consider chemo/radiation therapy a pretty valid excuse for
tardiness. We expect (fingers crossed) that he'll be fully up to speed
this time around. I might even manage to be on the ball, too.

As usual, profits go to the Global Health Initiative program of Boston
Children's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. We're hoping
to break all our meagre records for donations this time. Perhaps with
a contribution from Pentax/Richo? John Carlson (Senior Marketing
Manager) emailed me in June saying they'd make a contribution this
year, but all follow-up emails from myself and the people at
Dana-Farber have gone unanswered. Don't know what's up in that
department but we'll try again in 2015.

I'm trying to work up a gallery exhibit for the book somewhere in
Boston. Nothing definite yet but I'll keep everyone posted. We haven't
had an exhibit to accompany the book since 201o and I think it's about
time for another.

The submission form will go live at midnight GMT tomorrow and remain
open until midnight GMT on 28 February. Get your best shots ready!

Ok, starting all over again, I get a download file that says
“fwdc2200b-2.bin” As you see this file name doesn’t have a capital F and
there’s a “-2” When I try to open this file on my iMac, it “archives” the

Should I try to copy the “fwdc220b-2.bin.cpgz” file to the SDHC card?

Received mine (image wrap) today, shipped on 19th from Eindhoven. Two days
are typical delivery time from the Netherlands to Italy.
Really great work, as expected. Excellent photos and excellent management of
that good stuff. I like the design of this edition and rank it among the
very best ever.
I also like each edition has its own flavour, while keeping the size and
format of the book over the years. Very well done and thanks everybody!

from a stroke, i assume (first thought was air-strike, as too many
photographers are dying in war zones these days)

had not heard of him, but his work is very polished

I think Ravenna is also rather well cared of, by Italians born and living

Huh? English people in Le Marche? Sure someone has to live there, but
nothing prominent for sure. Never met one there.
I agree that Romagna (where I live) and Le Marche are in better shape,
cleaner and better looked after than other areas in Italy.

Thanks for the links, Bob. I don't know if I'll have enough time to
see both, but the HCB photos of Scanno have me seriously intrigued.
It's a 5 hour walk from Bugnara...

Maybe I should get a bicycle.

That is always true according to the n+1 formula. Which applies equally to
cameras and lenses.

Yesterday I asked an Italian friend about Abruzzo. She said it is very
bleak, and recommended Le Marche instead, which she says has the most
beautiful landscape she's ever seen. Also it is looked after properly by all
the English people who live there, not like the Italians.

Hi John,
I'm going to ask a few friends in that area and will get back soon with some

Perhaps we can meet somewhere during your stay in Italy, as I live in
Ravenna, on the Adriatic coast (north of Abruzzo and south of Venice).

Subject: Italy in May

I'm going to be in Italy next month, and I want to visit the towns my
grandparents came from, which are both in the Abruzzo region: Bugnara
and Giulianova. Hopefully our resident Italian PDMLers can help me
with these questions about the region:

- I'm hoping I can travel around Abruzzo by train and/or bus rather
than rent a car. Is this feasible? I normally use Google Maps for
getting around, but it doesn't show mass transit options in Italy and
I'm not sure where to look for accurate maps and timetables.

- How difficult is it to find hostels in the cities and towns of Abruzzo?

- My parents visited the region a couple decades ago and said there
was a big problem with pickpocketing and bag slashing. Is this still
the case? What can I do to protect myself and my belongings?

- My parents knew some Italian and were able to converse with people
when necessary. I don't know any Italian. Will this be a big problem?
I know a little Spanish, but I doubt that will help at all...

- I'm told I have distant cousins in Giulianova and Bugnara, but none
of them speak English. Would it be worth trying to meet them, or would
it just be awkward because of the language barrier?

- What are some hidden gems to see in Abruzzo? I'm thinking
churches/cathedrals, museums, historical sites, beautiful landscapes,
local landmarks, bars/restaurants, and other things like those.

My itinerary starts in Milan, and then I'm probably going to go to
Venice and Florence for a couple days each before heading south. After
Abruzzo I'll head to Rome to fly home.

Grazie,
John

DB review and TOP were fawning over it, and it is an attractive object.
To my eye eye, it looks like a Leica M mated with an iPhone, mid-wifed
by the Sony Nex design team, but in a good way.

Bottom line it has a 16mp sensor, possibly the same or similar to the
one used by Pentax in the K-5IIs, so it starts with pretty high a base
image quality, a new lens mount, and strangely enough considering
Leica's compact camera prices it sports a MSRP that's simply a bit high
for it's capabilities, compared to the competition, as opposed to
stratospheric.

Re: K-3 moire

2014-04-18 Thread Dario Bonazza

H Bong,
Just setup a table with textiles of different kinds and textures, draped so
that the different parts of each cloth/clothing will distribute at slightly
different distances from the camera. I bet you'll find moire somewhere. Or
shoot a cityscape where all kinds of grids will be included (such as nets,
shades, conditioners grids and such).
That was how I generated moire when testing the K-5IIs soon after its
launch. However, the moire you'll get will be subtle enough that you'll
hardly notice and only by inspecting carefully all image areas at 100%
magnification. RAW images have a good edge on JPEGs for correcting moire.

Re: K-3 moire

2014-04-18 Thread Dario Bonazza
I mean that moire that is visible in a given camera JPEG can go away by
itself while converting the RAW file (of its RAW+JPEG pair) into JPEG with
Photoshop CS6. Perhaps it's some kind of magic (an auto correction function
of CS6?). Never investigated into this because moire is so rare in my K-5IIs

I think I truly don't need the AA filter simulator of the K-3, because my
subjects have it themselves (move the subject insted of the camera sensor
and the trick is done). I understand that removing the textiles covering
your subject also works well... Damn, Iooks like I've selected the wrong AA

Be aware that I had to sell my Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 OS (early model, don't
know about the current one), because I could not adjust it for a proper
focus other than within a very narrow focal length range. So it was like
having just a little than a prime lens, used on my K-5. The Pentax is not
perfect (some different adjustment would improve performance), but is
useable as a zoom lens.

I'm hesitating since it's not the newer EX.
Reviews are so-so.
Still, it would be an improvement over the 18-55, but I'm questioning if it
is enough to justify.
Seems to be a 'tweener' -- better but how much.

Re: Pentax 17-70 f4 and SDM motor question

2014-03-19 Thread Dario Bonazza
Well, the DA* 50-135mm SDM is probably the slowest AF lens on Earth, gaining
it the nickname of the sloth. Generally speaking, SDM lenses are slower
than both screw-driven ad DC Pentax AF lenses, so the DA 17-70mm is a good
candidate for being another slow-AF lens. However, I own it and I don't find
it THAT slow as you pointed out.
There is however another problem I saw on several samples of that lens and
is the almost impossibility to autofocus above 50mm focal length, hunting
forever while you try find the focus. Perhaps that's the problem you
spotted.

Subject: Pentax 17-70 f4 and SDM motor question

Hi all

I went to pick up above mentioned lens this afternoon. loks and feel
nice on the K-5, however me thinks there is a problem.
I know the AF of Canon and Nikon are quite fast leaving us Pentaxians
hunting and pecking our way through landscapes and soccer photos, BUT,
2-3 seconds to lock on and focus on a static object.?? Me thinks
that's a bit to slow.
The salesman and i played with it for 10-15 minutes. It did get a tad
faster to focus but it was still painfully slow. I know it will not be
as snappy as my Nikon 70-200 f2,9 VR lens, you can barely hear
anything and it locks on faster than Mike Johnson deleting a cat
photo.

So, am i missing something with this SDM system. Is it painfully slow
or should it be as fast or faster to AF on a subject as the screw
focus lenses. Do i need to adjust a menu setting or something.

Another is on order for Saturday

Re: K-3 mirrior problems

2014-03-18 Thread Dario Bonazza
A friend of mine (coming from Olympus 473) bought a D600 with just one lens,
waiting to have the money for extra lenses, hence she never changed the lens
while the camera kept making the sensor dirty.

However, several Nikon D600 owners 'solved the problem' by buying a D800,
hence the D600 issue can be perceived as a marketing measure for selling a
cheaper camera and then forcing the customer to buy the good one ;)

Well, no, it's precisely because I *do* remember working with BW
film! (And still do in my 6x7 sometimes). Buying a BW-only camera is
like limiting yourself to only one film emulsion forever. OK, not
quite – with digital you can change the sensitivity. But you're stuck
with only one spectral response curve forever. As Bruse said, you can
still use filters, but that's not the same.

Re: Save me from my desire...

2014-03-05 Thread Dario Bonazza
Larry, you are comparing two ideal cameras featuring same technology, which
is not the case of the Leica Monochrom vs say the Leica M. The former uses a
5-years-old CCD technology, while the latter has a new CMOS sensor. I think
that the more you increase ISO sensitivity, the more the BW output of the M
will approach the Monochrom. I don't know if/where it will break even and
then surpass, but I won't be surprised to see that.

However, IQ does not seem the big point here, because those interested in
the Monochrom rather deal with the attitude of shooting BW. If I was Bob,
perhaps I'd buy an M and set it for saving RAW + BW jpg. However, please
check if that's allowed by the camera menus, because with Leica nothing
obvious (e.g. knowing which aperture was used for a shot) can be taken for
granted.
At that point, shoot for obtaining the best possible jpegs - by thinking BW
and using hardware filters and such. having the limit of the JPG should be
welcome by those thinking that limits are there to push their creativity.
But in case... just in case... very rarely... you can always jump back on
the RAW for maximum versatility. Who knows? From time to time you could even
find interesting color pics in that big RAW tank. Unfaithful to the color of
the scene, if filtered while shooting, but interesting anyway.

It makes sense in one narrow range. When color is not needed, and you need
the most
sensitivity and resolution possible out of your sensor, then it makes sense.
I suspect that

it might give a two Moore-cycle boost in performance.

Then there are the bragging rights.

Note, however, if we consider camera systems, and he already has a color
Leica, then this will allow him to get significantly better black and white
performance for the cost of only about 8-15 lenses or so.

that a DA14mm + 1.4TC on a 35mm frame would end up being a 14/1.54 x
1.4 = 12.7mm FOV on full frame?

If this is true, is it possible that the converter will allow DA
lenses (that don't quite cover full frame) to cover them adequately
(albeit at 1.4x the focal length). This would be most beneficial to
the faster DA lenses that don't cover full frame:
DA 14mm f/2.8 (21mm equiv. FOV on APS-C) would become a 21mm f/4 on full
frame.

DA* 16-50mm f2.8 (with 24-75mm equiv. FOV) would become a 24-70mm f/4
on full frame
DA* 50-135mm f2.8 (with 75-197mm equiv FOV) would become a 70-190mm f4
on full frame

2014-01-27 Thread Dario Bonazza
In other words, a 14mm x 1.4x becomes a true 19.6mm lens - hence
irrespectively of sensor size - and not an equivalent to XY mm on a given
format.
The question to be answered is whether such a combo of lens and TC will give
an image circle covering 24x36mm format or not.

No, the 14mm x 1.4x will become a 19.6mm f/4 in itself, whichever camera (if
any) you put behind it.
In case the resulting image will be large enough to cover the 24x36mm format
(not yet confirmed), it will project a FOV corresponding to a 19.6mm f/4
lens.

Re: Pentax 1.4x converter

2014-01-27 Thread Dario Bonazza
Interesting (?) question: in case the 1.4x TC will allow DA lenses to cover
FA sensor format, one could think it's a great way to make all DA lenses
work with their intended FOV on a FA body. E.g. a 14mm used alone on a DA
body will become a 20mm by using it via the 1.4x TC on a FA body, thus
resulting in more or less the same FOV on different format cameras.

Great, but what's the point of spreading the same amount of light gathered
by the same front lens on a larger sensor having say the same pixel count
(e.g. 24 MP) while losing one stop for exposure?

Re: Pentax 1.4x converter

2014-01-27 Thread Dario Bonazza
I've been having that feeling for some time now, as the picts of latest
Limited lenses look too perfect. And also consider the camera bodies offered
in different colors: they are not the same camera model of a different color
shot in a similar placement. They are in the same identical perspective,
reflections and all. You could superimpose them perfectly. Suspect, to me.
