Rubber enablement
I wasn't planning on going shopping today, but it happened. So in an annex popup to a vintage fashion store run by a friend, I saw a bag. Rubber Killer is the label, and they recycle truck tyres. The strap is a recycled seat belt. I know I'm crossing the gender accesory line, but I love it as a camera bag that doesn't look like a camera bag. Fits an M, with maybe an extra summicron. And a pen and pad, for that docojournalist in me. Well curated, and with amusing commentary notes from the photographer, who passed away a few months ago; I imagine he was working on the show to the end. I'm not too sure about the print quality on some of the material. The large wall displays have crazing in the shadow areas (apology notes promise these will be replaced next week), and some of the prints have very heavy handed dodging applied. It is still in effect. http://www.adorama.com/BG496RC2.html?utm_source=dealtimeutm_medium=Shopping%20Siteutm_campaign=Otherutm_term=Other If you click on the view/download rebate on that page, the offer is backed up with this: Rebate Information Manfrotto Compact Ball Head 496 with RC2 Rapid Connect Plate, Maximum Load: 13.2 lbs/ 6 kg $50.00 Mfr Rebate from Dec 1, 2010 - Jan 15, 2011 After placing my order and downloading the rebate form, however, I found that the rebate applied only if you also purchased a tripod. I have have had an email exchange with customer service. Their position is unrelenting: The offer is what is described on the rebate form, and I should have checked it before making my purchase. Mine is that they are obliged to honor the offer as described on the website made in the original description and confirmed at the view rebate link. The full price for this head is reasonable. I might have eventually ended up purchasing it at the full price down the road, but I was certainly not going to pass it up at what I understood the offer to be. The issue is more one of principle. Even if I'm right, however, there's a point beyond which pursuing it is not worth the effort. I may have passed it already. Still, I'm interested in your thoughts. Who is right, Adorama or me? If me, what recourse do I have? Thanks, Hi Eric I agree, that sort of thing annoys me no end - bury the important details in the fine print (or the third clicks). But that said, the rebate is coming from Manfrotto. I feel it isn't reasonable for Adorama to put up the complete details on the little pop-up. Personally, I would think, as you do, that the original price is fair, and the $50 is a bonus. Anyway, this is actually how rebates work; they figure only a certain percentage will claim. My experiences with Adorama have been consistently positive (second only to KEH). Popped a used Leitz 90mm Elmarit in my cart the other night. Not that I need another 90, but I don't have a chrome version. Going price was a reasonable $499. This morning, I got an email saying there was a mistake in the listing, and the version was actually the earlier E39 not E46. Offered it to me for 300 bucks. I actually quite like the look of the vulcanite retro-ness, so I snapped it up. If we accept, for the sake of argument, that people should not be able to make money out of photographs of their own public land without a permit (and I for one do not accept that), it is an entirely different matter from taking pictures of said land. The authorities should be chasing unauthorised commercial use of pictures, rather than trying to stop people taking them, but that would be too expensive so instead they crack down on innocent people. I'll bet for every 1,000 people who take a camera to that place there's only one professional photographer. But really, it's public land - it's your land. Tell them to shove their regulations up the hole in their culture, to paraphrase Leonard C. All very true. And if the authorities were really concerned about commercial photography profiting from public land, they would ask for a percentage, rather than just a peppercorn flat fee to apply for a permit (around $30 a day), not that I would want that to happen. As much as I would have loved to hear her voice (which is extraordinarily seductive), the performance piece as it turned out was even more powerful, because we were all filling in the vocal line. Sounds like a very cool experience. And even better, with no microphone in the way, it was a grand way to test the new Voigtlander 75mm/1.8. Stephen Gandy, for a little while, said it was designed to be soft wide open. He has since edited that out of his website. It's sharp enough for me at 1.8 How do you like it compared with the 77/1.8? Thanks Larry, I'm glad you asked. I've had a gap for gig shooting with the Epsons. I love using 77mm on APS-C. Just the right length to get an intimate shot, with enough environmental space. And not too short that I have to be in the face of the muso. First rule of gig shooting - consider the muso. Second rule - consider the paying punter who'd like to see the band too. I've been using the outstanding 90mm Elmarit-M, but while that is flawless technically, 90mm is just a tad too long in a small venue like the Annandale. I do own the 75mm Color Heliar, but that is a a little slow (as is the Elmarit). Can't afford a 75mm Summilux, so when Mr K announced the 75 Heliar, I praised him to many interested and disinterested persons. Compared to the 77, the 75 is actually significantly larger and heavier, which gives much kudos to the Pentax engineers. Haven't rigorously tested the sharpness and the flare control (and not gunna), but it seems fine to me. Focusing feel of course is much better with the 75. I'm just happy to have both. -- der...@iinet.net.au http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
OT GESO - Jonneine Zapata Cast The Demons Out Tour w. The Holy Soul + Loene Carmen (and my Voigtlander 75mm/1.8 initiation)
That was memorable. It started out being a pleasant night. My friends playing support, all is right with the world. But Loene sensed there was something odd happening with the headliner. And there was The band came on and asked everyone to be really quiet, or they wouldn't hear. The lead singer, Jonneine, having come all the way from Silverlake CA, had lost her voice. Really lost it. She could barely whisper. But bravely, she said they would play the whole set. And a beautiful instrumental set it was, with Jonneine doing some mesmerising zen singing up front. http://members.iinet.net.au/~derbyc/10/10_10/10_10_jonneine/index.htm As much as I would have loved to hear her voice (which is extraordinarily seductive), the performance piece as it turned out was even more powerful, because we were all filling in the vocal line.
