Re: Advice on Selection of Macro Lens
Depending on the type of work you want to do, I 'd go with either a 100mm or 50mm f2.8 macro. Personally I use a D-FA 100 f2.8 and find the results to be excellent. I have a Sigman 50mm f 2.8 that is also excellent. I also use an M 50 f4 macro from time to time. Type of work you want to do... For bugs longer focal length, fast manual focus and / or auto focus. I usually want close 1:1 to 1:2 magnification and to isolate the subject against the background. For flowers I usually shoot at a lower magnification and want a little more background in the shot, so a shorter focal length works out well. Some manual focus macro lenses trade off precision in focusing for focusing speed. I have a older Kiron 105mm f 2.8 (I believe the same lens as the Vivitar Series 1 f 2.5 (Kiron was the OEM for Vivitar)). I just checked it - the lens barrel rotates just under 2 complete rotations to go from infinity to 1:1. By contrast the D-FA requires just under one full rotation of the focusing collar to cover the same focusing range. One facilitates precision, the other speed. Lastly, I would not give the Kiron an unqualified recommendation. It works great with film and I've had good results with digital, but I've had some shots on DSLR's that have suffered from chromatic aberrations, fringing, whatever. If needed a 100mm macro, I would not get the Kiron for a DSLR. Mark On 12/1/2012 9:18 AM, Daniel J. Re: Questions for the Cognes-Q-enti
Congrats on getting the Q - it is a ton of fun and kicks out pretty decent images as well. I bought a used Q Kit that had the standard prime, standard zoom, fisheye and toy telephoto. I added a K to Q converter right off the bat. The 5-15mm zoom has been my most used lens with the standard prime close behind. Both of those lenses just feel great and perform very well. For the type of shooting that I use the Q for the standard zoom is perfect. I was captivated by the fisheye but had iffy results manually focusing with it. When focused propertly (and I kept my fingers out of the field of view) it was great. I installed the new firmware a few weeks ago and focus peaking is a huge boon to me wrt to using this lens. I expect I'll use it a lot in the future and my problems focusing it will be greatly diminished. The lens that has seen virtually no use is the toy telephoto. I've tried it a few times and it works well. IMO it really should not be called a toy lens as that invokes lomography / holga etc (at least to me) and it is a straightforward good performing lens. It just lacks aperture control and autofocus and is not as nicely constructed as the standard lenses. The K to Q adapter is an excellent tool. I've been playing around with an M 50 f1.7 as my working telephoto, and with the updated firmware and image stabilization and focus peaking it works fine. The M 50 / adapter / Q is not at all awkward to me. I did several test shots with the Q and A* 200 f4 macro, D-FA 100mm and other K mount lenses. It worked well and is not terribly difficult to use. For macro the Q's DOF is great. My tests are here: http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/testing-the-pentax-q-and-k-mount-lenses I am eagerly awaiting using K mount macro prime with focus peaking - just haven't gotten out to do any work with it. I'll be adding the telephoto zoom to my kit soon as well, since with the normal zoom it would be a great travel kit. I will also probably opt for the Pentax K to Q adapter with built in leaf shutter to be able to better use flash. Have fun! Hi Christine - Just a comment - at the maximum X-Synch speed and slower, changing the shutter speed only affects the ambient lighting. It has no affect on the flash - only aperture affects flash. Re: Can we talk about fill flash pttl?
Just my own testing - but the two controls seem to be cumulative. At -2 on the body and -3 on the unit, flash is less powerful than -3 on the unit alone. I usually set the unit to -2 or -3 and fine tune with body compensation - which can also mean dialing in +1 on the body. Here are two macro shots that show the impact of the fill flash - http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP4143.jpg http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP4145.jpg The first one had flash with -3 on the unit and (I think) -1 on the body. I had a diffuser on the flash but was using a bracket that put the flash unit pretty close to the subject. The second one had no flash - the batteries were cycling. I processed the raw files identically except that for the second shot I pushed the 'fill light' setting in Adobe Camera Raw as far as I could before the shadows got noisy. But, as you can see, the flash makes a big difference - I think the first shot is actually a little over flashed and I should have pushed in a little more negative compensation or set the flash zoom level to wide angle... - MCC - Original Message - From: Christine Nielsen ch...@inielsen.net To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Cc: Sent: Sunday, July 17, 2011 11:37 AM Subject: Re: Can we talk about fill flash pttl? How do the flash compensation controls on the the flash and camera work together? Or separately, for that matter? Re: Favorite
I like it. You have competing diagonals - the lines made by the bottom of the dust cloud (going from upper left to lower right) and the edge of the track (lower left to upper right) witht he car sitting just above the intersection. I'd crop a bit off the bottom and the left and put a little more space in front of and above the car to imply more movement... Overall, I like the graphic elements and the soft lighting. - Original Message - From: Doug Franklin jehosep...@mindspring.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Cc: Sent: Monday, July 11, 2011 10:20 PM Subject: Favorite I've shot a lot of frames of automobiles racing over the last few years. After coming almost to a stop in the gravel, he pulled it together and surfed over to the pavement, creating a huge dust cloud. In the photo, he's just regained the pavement and started accelerating through the dust cloud to continue the race. Unfortunately, the wind was fairly still, and it took a couple of minutes before you could see into, much less through, the dust cloud. Re: OT - Hard Disk Oddity
I had 5 of these 500 gb My Books drives and they generally worked well. One drive failed and took it to a local shop and they pulled the drive and put it in a generic enclosure - worked fine with no problems. The generic enclosure didn't cost more than $25 IIRC. So - you might want to just back up the flaky drive and have it put in a new enclosure. If it still has problems then the drive itself is flaky and you may as well just get rid of it or relegate it to just data transfers or something. Otherwise, like mine, it may work fine. I have since upgraded to a couple of 3TB drives and 2 of the 500 GB drives to have two copies of everything - and I drop off one set of thethe drives at a local computer shop that has their own data center every few months to archive everything remotely. The remaining My Books are not getting much use - they join the 200 gb drives etc that are big enough to be useful to too small to be valuable... Good luck- -- MCC - Original Message From: John Sessoms jsessoms...@nc.rr.com To: pdml@pdml.net Sent: Tue, July 5, 2011 8:56:56 PM Subject: RE: OT - Hard Disk Oddity From: Brian Walters G'day all For several months one of my external hard drives has been acting a bit 'flaky'. The drive is permanently attached to the PC but when the computer boots there is no sign of the drive in Windows Explorer. However, after about 10-15 minutes, the autoplay window magically appears and the operating system reads the drive, which then becomes available. The drive continues to work properly thereafter - until the next boot when the process starts over again. My question is whether the hard disk itself is on the way to hard disk hell or whether the drive controller is likely to be the culprit. Or could it be a faulty USB cable? Would it be worth extracting the drive from its case and try installing it in a new case? The drive is about three and a half years old. Note that I'm not relying on this drive as a primary back up any more, but it is convenient if it keeps working. And I'm just curious as to why the drive would be behaving like this. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Re: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you
Probably equivalent to ISO 400 APS I have a lot of complaints about the P9000, but the sensor noise is way down the list. The slow lens, slow operations, confounding menus, mutually exclusive options (like not being able to auto-bracket when shooting in raw mode) and useless features (barely functional gps, Ethernet port to nowhere) all bother me more than the small sensor size and attendent noise. It gets very detailed images and the noise has not proven to be a problem. A camera with better features and ergonomics that is even small might be just the thing. Not so sure about the $800 price tag on the Q though... - Original Message From: John Francis jo...@panix.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Fri, June 24, 2011 2:36:24 AM Subject: Re: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you On Thu, Jun 23, 2011 at 07:18:36PM -0700, Mark Cassino wrote: ? Re: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you
I think this could be a fine camera for me and I'll be watching for more information. I want to have fun with my camera but I also want to take great shots. I carry a Nikon P6000 with me when I travel now, and I've gotten some great shots with it. Yeah, it's a small sensor and noisy and the camera is slow and the lens focuses poorly and everyone dishes on what a piece of crap it is... BFD: it works and once you blow past the limitations, you can do good work with it. I've also gotten some fine shots form my Kodak Retina A which relies on dead reckoning for focus and exposure (unless you pack a separate hand held meter). Again - it works. The Q looks like a huge step up from the compact camera I'm used to using and not as bulky as the micro 4/3rds, which are not all that small. If the image quality proves to be good, I'll probably go for one. I'm pretty tolerant about what good means - if it is on par with a scan of ISO 400 print film, I can probably make a print from it that does what I want. If you can figure out how to make something work when everyone else is focused on why it won't work, you're ahead in the game. I'd love a camera this small and if the image quality is on par with the compact that i use now, the interchangeable lenses and ergonomics would make it a no-brainer to buy, IMO. So - the Q may well be for me... If they made a10mm marco for it, it might even be more for me...:-) MCC - Original Message From: John Celio n...@neovenator.com To: pdml@pdml.net Sent: Thu, June 23, 2011 5:18:33 PM Subject: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you I'm amazed by how many people are expressing disappointment in the Q, here and on other forums, as if it's supposed to be some sort of professional camera system. Re: Bad New's From Pentax Re A* 200....
Thanks, Bill - and thanks to everyone who suggested a repair service. I'll be sending out some emails and hope to bounce the lens out to a repair shop as soon as it comes back from Pentax. I really would like to get this lens fixed. I also have a growing pile of stuff the needs repair - my ME Super went dead with the mirror up a few months ago, the shutter on my PZ-1p is sticking, My TOkina 400 f5.6 is hazed with fungus... The list goes on. I really love that ME Super and the PZ-1p is the only advanced feature SLR that I have that is IR film friendly (the Mz-S apparently is not compatable with IR film - haven't tested that.) Re: PP help
It depends on what you want to do with the image. If you are trying to accurately depict the deer and be objectively truthful in your portrayal leave the tick in. If you are trying to create a purty pitcher for a calendar and are trying to reinforce people's picturesque preconceptions of the lovely natural world, take it out. Another way to put it: If you want to make money off the shot, take the tick out. There is an inverse correlation between truthfulness and monetary potential. People pay for photos that tell them the world is the way they hope it is. They don't pay for photos that tell them what the world is really like, I guess because they can see what the world is really like every day for free. Re: Grab a Drop
You certainly caught a very interesting moment - I've never heard of insects grabbing drops of dew. Your timing was spot on. When I was trying out lens options the other night I spent a lot of time chasing these very small mantid nymphs that were runnign around in the garden. Dozens of exposures and not one clear shot. I did some looking around on Google Images to see what I could find yesterday, and I'm inclined to go with your call as the longhorn grasshopper. The katydids I saw didn't quite have antennae that long. It was interesting watching the little guy as I was shooting. When I saw him reach down for the water droplet, I was SURE I missed it, and was really excited when I got in and loaded it onto the computer. I was utterly convinced that I'd somehow blown the shot, and almost dreaded looking. I kept watching him after I hit the shutter, and it was so cool to watch him -- he used the water droplet to rinse off his antennae (or maybe that's a way of hydrating?). Thanks for the kind thoughts on my parents and the input on the photo. Sorry I haven't been around to participate. Ever since I got home from my visit to California with Larry and John, my mother's health has taken a turn for the worse. She's currently in hospice care, and it's fallen to me to look after her. She's in fairly grave condition - to the point where she's taking morphine in both pill and liquid form, and I have to stay on top of that. And, as if that weren't enough, my father has suddenly taken ill with heart problems -- both of them spent about ten days in the hospital at the same time recently. So, essentially, my photography is limited to what I can find in my yard. A couple of weeks ago, I order a reversing ring and have been tinkering around with my K 50/1.4. So far, this is the best shot I've managed to get with it. Basically, it's shot with my K-x using the pop-up flash and a Fuji film canister with some wax paper lining the inside as a diffuser, at 400 ISO for 1/180 of second. (It's a grasshopper-like insect, in case anyone is squeamish about those). http://www.flickr.com/photos/walt_gilbert/5832616817/ (Lighbox) http://is.gd/Q6u4ys I haven't done a great deal of editing to it -- bumped up the highlights using curves in The GIMP and resized to make a faster upload. I just wanted to show it off because I was really happy with the way it turned out. I wish I could participate in the forum, or even seriously pursue photography at all right now, but it's just tough to get serious with it in my current situation. With any luck, though, hospice will help to get my mother a little more stabilized and I'll be able to get out and trudge around with the camera a bit more. Anyway -- that's the news from Kentucky. I write and take photos when I can, and figured I ought to at least touch base with everyone to let you all know I'm still alive and check in on the list from time to time, whenever the opportunity presents itself. -- Walt -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter
This weekend I tested out the D-FA 100mm macro combined with a Kiron MC-7 2x teleconverter and also combined with a Pentax 1.7x AF adapter as alternatives to a 200mm macro lens. The combo with the Kiron was OK, but not great. However, I was really impressed with the results with the 1.7x converter. Those first two shots - the backlit hairs - are really cool, Igor. I have not used any stacked DOF software on these shots. The insect shots are hand held with the camera on just a monopod - between my motion and the movement of the bugs, I don't think that I could get enough shots to stack. SOmeone recommended the DOF stacking software for snow flakes last spring, too late to try it, but it's on my project list for next winter... Re: D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter
Hi Steve - I tried the DFA 100 and the 1.7x converter in the field with no prior tests or measurements, but I just did a crude test. Without the converter on the lens, I set it to 1:1 (minimum focusing distance) and focused on a ruler. I could see 23mm marked on the ruler through the finder. The measured distance from the front of the lens was ~5 inches. I then put on the 1.7x TC and moved the camera around till it was focused on the ruler and again showed 23 mm. Now the working distance was ~8 inches. (In both cases I measured the working distance as from the front of the lens to the subject - no hood.) In theory, the working distance should have been 8.5 inches with the TC on. The converter itself adds about an inch to the length of the lens though, and 1/2 inch is probably within the margin of error for my measurements. So, it looks like the converter is increasing the working distance for by 1.7x, as it should, but is taking back the inch it adds to the length of the lens. As for the focus position of the elements - I had not considered that. I just did a quick test on that too, though. I coaxed the converter to its farthest setting (infinity focus) and then set the lens to 1.5x lifesized and measured the focus distance. I then repeated with the converter at its nearest setting. There seemed to be about 1 inch difference in the focus distance between the two settings. But doing that - I realize that you would really have to control for magnification. My guess is that is all comes out in the wash - with the converter set to its closest focus you can get closer, but get greater magnification. thinking about it - both the converter and the lens add extension to focus closer. Extension added by the converter is added behind the converter. Extension added by the lens is added before the converter. I have a book here that talks about adding tubes in front of or behind a converter and the difference between them. That's the same issue. I'll look that up... but not tonight. - MCC - Original Message From: steve harley p...@paper-ape.com To: Pentax-Discuss Mail List pdml@pdml.net Sent: Tue, June 14, 2011 9:11:45 PM Subject: Re: D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter On 2011-06-14 05:52 , Mark Cassino wrote: I'm pretty satisfied with the 1.7x telelconverter - though I still hope to hear from Pentax that they can fixed the lens! very nice practical experiment; i also have a 1.7x AF TC; i tried it with my Sigma 105mm, and found the quality pretty good, and if i stick to 1:1 it seems to somewhat increase the working distance, but at maximum magnification (nominally 1.7:1) the working distance is back down to the 4 or so of the 105mm alone; did you get better working distance with your test? (wasn't that one of your main concerns?) i also noticed the 1.7x leaves it's optics focused to wherever one left it when AF was turned off; my guess would be that for macro one should prefocus it to it's shortest focus then switch to MF, but i wasn't in a position to test this carefully -- any thoughts? -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

May be since introduction of Sigma 24-60 they did improve on their coatings a fair bit, I don't know but I'd certain want to hear your opinion on the matter if and when you get a Sigma. Thanks - I already have the 100. I'll be testing it with a 2x converter (Kiron MC-7) this weekend, but I don't have high hopes for sharpness with the TC. I started a new day-job 6 months ago and after almost 10 years of freelancing and part-timing I'm still a bit freaked out about getting up and going somewhere every day. Well - 'somewhere' as in not the woods or prairie or savannah... Anyhow, I've not been active on the list for a while... the Story of Snow has been off to a great start - it was a Junoir Library Guild Selctiion a couple of months ago, the New York Public Library included it in their '100 titles for reading and Sharing', the Bulletin of the Center of Children's Books is putting it on the cover of their Decmebr issue and the nation Science Teacher's Association included it in their list of 2010 Outstanding Science Trade Books. Not bad for the first 6 weeks in print! Last night I set up a website / blog for the book which can be cound here - www.storyofsnow.com I pulled in some posts that had been on my perosnal blog and added some new ones. I hope to keep things up to date there! And folks interested in BW urban landscapes might want to check out the link to Gary Ciadella's book there. Later - MCC - Original Message From: Daniel J.
