Re: Advice on Selection of Macro Lens

2012-12-01 Thread Mark Cassino
Depending on the type of work you want to do, I 'd go with either a
100mm or 50mm f2.8 macro. Personally I use a D-FA 100 f2.8 and find the
results to be excellent. I have a Sigman 50mm f 2.8 that is also
excellent. I also use an M 50 f4 macro from time to time.

Type of work you want to do... For bugs longer focal length, fast
manual focus and / or auto focus. I usually want close 1:1 to 1:2
magnification and to isolate the subject against the background. For
flowers I usually shoot at a lower magnification and want a little more
background in the shot, so a shorter focal length works out well.

Some manual focus macro lenses trade off precision in focusing for
focusing speed. I have a older Kiron 105mm f 2.8 (I believe the same
lens as the Vivitar Series 1 f 2.5 (Kiron was the OEM for Vivitar)). I
just checked it - the lens barrel rotates just under 2 complete
rotations to go from infinity to 1:1. By contrast the D-FA requires just
under one full rotation of the focusing collar to cover the same
focusing range. One facilitates precision, the other speed.

Lastly, I would not give the Kiron an unqualified recommendation. It
works great with film and I've had good results with digital, but I've
had some shots on DSLR's that have suffered from chromatic aberrations,
fringing, whatever. If needed a 100mm macro, I would not get the Kiron
for a DSLR.

Re: Questions for the Cognes-Q-enti

2012-11-22 Thread Mark Cassino
Congrats on getting the Q - it is a ton of fun and kicks out pretty
decent images as well.

I bought a used Q Kit that had the standard prime, standard zoom,
fisheye and toy telephoto. I added a K to Q converter right off the bat.

The 5-15mm zoom has been my most used lens with the standard prime close
behind. Both of those lenses just feel great and perform very well. For
the type of shooting that I use the Q for the standard zoom is perfect.

I was captivated by the fisheye but had iffy results manually focusing
with it. When focused propertly (and I kept my fingers out of the field
of view) it was great. I installed the new firmware a few weeks ago and
focus peaking is a huge boon to me wrt to using this lens. I expect I'll
use it a lot in the future and my problems focusing it will be greatly
diminished.

The lens that has seen virtually no use is the toy telephoto. I've tried
it a few times and it works well. IMO it really should not be called a
toy lens as that invokes lomography / holga etc (at least to me) and
it is a straightforward good performing lens. It just lacks aperture
control and autofocus and is not as nicely constructed as the standard
lenses.

The K to Q adapter is an excellent tool. I've been playing around with
an M 50 f1.7 as my working telephoto, and with the updated firmware and
image stabilization and focus peaking it works fine. The M 50 / adapter
/ Q is not at all awkward to me.

I did several test shots with the Q and A* 200 f4 macro, D-FA 100mm and
other K mount lenses. It worked well and is not terribly difficult to
use. For macro the Q's DOF is great. My tests are here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/testing-the-pentax-q-and-k-mount-lenses

I am eagerly awaiting using K mount macro prime with focus peaking -
just haven't gotten out to do any work with it. I'll be adding the
telephoto zoom to my kit soon as well, since with the normal zoom it
would be a great travel kit.

I will also probably opt for the Pentax K to Q adapter with built in
leaf shutter to be able to better use flash.

Have fun!

On the wide end, there doesn't seem to be any alternative to the
standard 5-15 mm zoom but for telephoto I'm torn between the upcoming
long zoom and using K mount lenses via a Q to K adapter. The lack of
autofocus with the latter option is a concern, my eyesight not being

Despite the scorching heat , I -had- to get out.. so I slowly crawled over to
my favorite boutique the Salvation Army store across from the post office
where I go to mail my ebay sales...

This is what I got, for a total of $40.

A Tenba Camera bag ...
(The Camera bag is the TENBA expresspak 104.  The receipt is from 1995
for the bag - which is in minty condition - and owner paid $32 for it then
(which was a discount, it seems) )

Inside of which were the following items

2 K-1000 bodies.
(1) The Asahi from years ago.. it weighs a few ounces more than the assembled
in China' ones... the shutter button is frozen in the down
position (if you have any idea about how I could extricate it let me know) and
it needs a good cla I'd say... but it is the golden oldie.
I could send it to Eric (who Ive heard such good things about) to get it fixed.

(2) the second K-1000 works and the clicks all sound right, but there is
something weird with the viewfinder... two black lines on each side that are
mottled.  the other one has two black lines too.. are these
guidlines for framing?  The othe K-1000 I have doest ahve this.. is this
staining from the black foam?

3 Lenses:
(In apparently fine shape and I tried it on my ist d )
SMC PENTAX FA 28-105 zoom f4-5.6. Auto focus works on my ist-d. BLACK

NExt ...
50mm prime SMC Pentax FA 1.4 BLACK - this works on manual on the istD
and kinda worked on auto focus but not properly ... apparently it
works on later issues -- or some (a brief check on ebay) With operating manual
from 1991.

finally ...
SMC Pentax 30mm 1:2.8  The serial number is also on the front of the lens along
with Asahi Opt. Co. Japan.  The number is 5377550.
It doesn't say M but otherwise the writing is jsut like my dear
old 28mm M that I got in the mid to late 70's.

Also:
a Sekonic Flashmate L-308BII LIght meter with manual (of this I know from
nothing :-) )

And a couple of little things I'm uncertain of ..
plus a PZ-10 manual -

I think you were on track in your first reply -- it was still very
bright out, and the camera, set to AV, wanted a fast shutter speed
(1/500 +), even at ISO 200.  After my first shot, I smacked my

Re: Can we talk about fill flash pttl?

2011-07-17 Thread Mark Cassino
Just my own testing - but the two controls seem to be cumulative. At -2 on the
body and -3 on the unit, flash is less powerful than -3 on the unit alone. I
usually set the unit to -2 or -3 and fine tune with body compensation - which
can also mean dialing in +1 on the body.

Here are two macro shots that show the impact of the fill flash -

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP4143.jpg

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP4145.jpg

The first one had flash with -3 on the unit and (I think) -1 on the body. I had
a diffuser on the flash but was using a bracket that put the flash unit pretty
close to the subject. The second one had no flash - the batteries were cycling.
I processed the raw files identically except that for the second shot I pushed
the 'fill light' setting in Adobe Camera Raw as far as I could before the
shadows got noisy.

But, as you can see, the flash makes a big difference - I think the first shot
is actually a little over flashed and I should have pushed in a little more
negative compensation or set the flash zoom level to wide angle...

Your comment:

On overcast cloudy days I may set the flash compensation to -3
and the compensation on the camera body to -2.

Raises another question for me, though... How do the flash
compensation controls on the the flash and camera work together?  Or
separately, for that matter?  When applying compensation in both
places, it sounds from your description that they have a cumulative
effect (-5 EV?)...  As opposed to one set of controls taking
precedence over the other... Is this correct?  If using just the
compensation controls in one place or the other, is either more
effective?

Thanks again,

reading or to -1/2 stop. The amount of fill needed is relative to the
 primarily
light source. In direct full brutal sun I shoot with no exposure compensation
on the flash. On overcast cloudy days I may set the flash compensation to -3
and the compensation on the camera body to -2. In some situations I have to
resort to lowering the power on the flash by dropping the wide angle diffuser
or putting a diffuser on it. But those cases are very low light situations
where the subject is very close.
 After
doing this for a while I now just know where to set things - just experiment a
bit. Digital makes the technical end of photography so easy I use the same
basic technique for macros, birds, and even outdoor portraits. For wildlife it
is split second decision making and having the flash compensation in the body
is a great asset. If you put the flash on a bracket or use a diffuser etc it
just equates to a certain number of stops of compensation, so you just
 consider
that in your mental calculations... Like In this soft light I'd like to
have -4 stops of compensation but that diffuser is equivalent to -2 so I'll
 just dial in -2.
 I'm working
with the flash generally much closer than the minimum working distance - like
the subject is 12 to 24 inches away - so overexposure is always a problem.
 I've
used the same basic setup with the Pz-1p (usually with slide film), *ist-D,
K-10D, and now K7. Each camera had it's own quirks and I had to adjust the
 exposure
compensation for each. I find that I dial in much more negative compensation
 with
the K7 than I did with any of the other cameras.

reading or to -1/2 stop. The amount of fill needed is relative to the primarily
light source.
If you put the flash on a bracket or use a diffuser etc it
just equates to a certain number of stops of compensation, so you just consider
that in your mental calculations...
Good
luck!

Subject: Can we talk about fill flash pttl?

Last night, I attended a portrait workshop.  We were shooting at the
beach, at the end of the day.  It was still very bright, and in the
shade of a lighthouse, some fill was required on our models' faces.
No problem.  I had the AF540 on my k-7...using aperture priority mode,
and -1.5 Flash EV, I took some shots.  Gah.  Way overexposed.  I
fiddled, set the flash to high-speed sync, and tried again.  Still
hot.  I proceeded to try several other manipulations... none really
working, until I settled on a fully manual operation for exposure, and
flash (1/16).

It shouldn't have to be this way, though, right?  I should be able to
use pttl to provide (more or less) the right amount of fill, yes? I'm
even pretty sure I've done it successfully in the past, though it
would have been with the AF360.

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
-c

I like it. You have competing diagonals - the lines made by the bottom of the
dust cloud (going from upper left to lower right) and the edge of the track
(lower left to upper right) witht he car sitting just above the intersection.
I'd crop a bit off the bottom and the left and put a little more space in front
of and above the car to imply more movement... Overall, I like the graphic

I've shot a lot of frames of automobiles racing over the last few years.  I
don't know if I've shown this one to the group or not, but it's one of my
favorites.  Taken at Road Atlanta's Turn 10 during the 2007 Petit le Mans
sportscar race, just before the sun went below the hills.

http://NutDriver.org/2007-PlM-Esperante.jpg

One of the Panoz Esperante cars had spun out into a gravel trap off to the
right of the shot a few feet.  After coming almost to a stop in the gravel, he
pulled it together and surfed over to the pavement, creating a huge dust
cloud.  In the photo, he's just regained the pavement and started accelerating
through the dust cloud to continue the race. Unfortunately, the wind was fairly
still, and it took a couple of minutes before you could see into, much less
through, the dust cloud. Several drivers had some exciting moments going
through that cloud.

Re: OT - Hard Disk Oddity

2011-07-06 Thread Mark Cassino
I had 5 of these 500 gb My Books drives and they generally worked well. One
drive failed and took it to a local shop and they pulled the drive and put it
in
a generic enclosure - worked fine with no problems. The generic enclosure
didn't
cost more than $25 IIRC. So - you might want to just back up the flaky drive
and
have it put in a new enclosure. If it still has problems then the drive itself
is flaky and you may as well just get rid of it or relegate it to just data
transfers or something. Otherwise, like mine, it may work fine.

I have since upgraded to a couple of 3TB drives and 2 of the 500 GB drives to
have two copies of everything - and I drop off one set of thethe drives at a
local computer shop that has their own data center every few months to archive
everything remotely.

The remaining My Books are not getting much use - they join the 200 gb drives
etc that are big enough to be useful to too small to be valuable...

Good luck- --

 G'day all

For several months one of my external hard drives has been acting a bit
 'flaky'.

The drive is permanently attached to the PC but when the computer boots
there is no sign of the drive in Windows Explorer.  However, after about
10-15 minutes, the autoplay window magically appears and the operating
system reads the drive, which then becomes available.  The drive
continues to work properly thereafter - until the next boot when the
 process starts over again.

My question is whether the hard disk itself is on the way to hard disk
hell or whether the drive controller is likely to be the culprit.  Or
could it be a faulty USB cable? Would it be worth extracting the drive
from its case and try installing it in a new case? The drive is about
three and a half years old.

Note that I'm not relying on this drive as a primary back up any more,
but it is convenient if it keeps working.  And I'm just curious as to
why the drive would be behaving like this.

The short form is that if you post something to google+, they get to do what
they want with it, without paying you.

I haven't looked into the google+ photo sharing at any depth yet.  I've got an

user
interface for sorting friends into groups (or circles) so that you can select

PESO - TIger in the House (Warning: cat photo.)

2011-07-03 Thread Mark Cassino
My mother's health took a drastically bad turn last weekend, and I spent the
last week in Iowa helping out. When I left on Friday (another relative is there
now) I took my mother's cat with me. The 9 1/2 hour trip back from Iowa was fun
- holiday weekend traffic, road construction, accidents, apocalyptic
thunderstorm, and more road construction resulted in the trip being about 3
hours longer than it should have been. At any rate, he has settled in
remarkably
well and is actually hanging out with the other two cats with minimal hissing
and growling.

Here's a photo I took of him in the spring of 2010, with a K7 and FA 80-320
zoom. I never regret using that lens, though I don't pack it often.

I've always been more of a dog person myself, but since meeting Lisa

they raise the pet that makes the difference. Zephyr was the
friendliest, most affectionate cats I've ever known. He used to follow
me around like a puppy at times. He'd had chronic pancreatitis for
years and then eventually became diabetic, requiring twice-daily
insulin injections. He also has asthma, with occasional noisy
mid-night coughing attacks. He had a good, long life and was
definitely high maintenance but we still miss the little guy.

So far I used a raynox 250 on the F100 resulting in a very short

Re: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you

2011-06-24 Thread Mark Cassino
Probably equivalent to ISO 400 APS I have a lot of complaints about the
P9000, but the sensor noise is way down the list. The slow lens, slow
operations, confounding menus, mutually exclusive options (like not being able
to auto-bracket when shooting in raw mode) and useless features (barely
functional gps, Ethernet port to nowhere) all bother me more than the small
sensor size and attendent noise. It gets very detailed images and the noise has
not proven to be a problem. A camera with better features and ergonomics that
is
even small might be just the thing. Not so sure about the $800 price tag on the
Q though...

Re: Mind your Ps and Qs: the Q is not meant for you

2011-06-23 Thread Mark Cassino
I think this could be a fine camera for me and I'll be watching for more
information. I want to have fun with my camera but I also want to take great
shots. I carry a Nikon P6000 with me when I travel now, and I've gotten some
great shots with it. Yeah, it's a small sensor and noisy and the camera is slow
and the lens focuses poorly and everyone dishes on what a piece of crap it
is...
BFD: it works and once you blow past the limitations, you can do good work with
it. I've also gotten some fine shots form my Kodak Retina A which relies on
dead
reckoning for focus and exposure (unless you pack a separate hand held meter).
Again - it works.

The Q looks like a huge step up from the compact camera I'm used to using and
not as bulky as the micro 4/3rds, which are not all that small. If the image
quality proves to be good, I'll probably go for one. I'm pretty tolerant about
what good means - if it is on par with a scan of ISO 400 print film, I can
probably make a print from it that does what I want.

If you can figure out how to make something work when everyone else is focused
on why it won't work, you're ahead in the game. I'd love a camera this small
and
if the image quality is on par with the compact that i use now, the
interchangeable lenses and ergonomics would make it a no-brainer to buy, IMO.

So - the Q may well be for me... If they made a10mm marco for it, it might even
be more for me...:-)

I'm amazed by how many people are expressing disappointment in the Q,
here and on other forums, as if it's supposed to be some sort of
professional camera system.

Guys, this is a modern Auto110. It's made for moderately versatile
convenience, and it's aimed at people who want to have fun with their
cameras. Those of us who lug around our K-whatevers every day are not
the intended market!

Please, take a chill pill and quit acting like Pentax owes you a better
camera. They already make better cameras, and you probably already own
one of them. Pentax may very well come out with a larger mirrorless
camera this year,  but I'd be willing to bet you'll find some reason to
bitch about it anyway.

John

P.S.: For what it's worth, I think the Q is pretty damn intriguing. As
an Auto110 fan, I like this addition to Pentax's digital lineup.

Redundant Array of Inexpensive DSLRs

On my drive home from San Luis Obispo today, I had the crazy idea that for the
price of a medium format camera, you could make a bracket that would securely
hold four (or more) relatively inexpensive DSLRs, with identical(*) decent
lenses, trigger them simultaneously, and use software to combine the images
into
one extremely high resolution, or high dynamic range, image. This would have
the
advantage of all of the shots being taken at the same time, and for landscape
photos, the parallax difference would likely be negligible.

I'm curious of any one knows of any work along  these lines... stitching images
from multiple cameras, taken at the same time, rather than a single camera
taken
over a longer span of time.

* By identical I mean the same make and model, individual variation is
inevitable.

The weather did not cooperate much. I had a day to myself while my wife was in a

Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The final images were so flat I

Re: PP help

2011-06-18 Thread Mark Cassino
It depends on what you want to do with the image. If you are trying to
accurately depict the deer and be objectively truthful in
your portrayal leave the tick in. If you are trying to create a purty pitcher
for a calendar and are trying to reinforce people's picturesque preconceptions
of the lovely natural world, take it out.

Another way to put it:

If you want to make money off the shot, take the tick out. There is an inverse
correlation between truthfulness and monetary potential. People pay for photos
that tell them the world is the way they hope it is. They don't pay for photos
that tell them what the world is really like, I guess because they can see what
the world is really like every day for free.

My two cents -

Okay now on to my question. I have been looking through my photos and on one

I visited Washington DC last March and took a few snapshots of the various
monuments, memorials, and other landmarks. Camera of choice was an IR
converted K-10d.

The weather did not cooperate much. I had a day to myself while my wife was in
a

conference, and I used it to walk around the mall. A clear and sunny morning
devolved into a cloudy day with cold misty rain. I took some shots of the
Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial. The final images were so flat I
'hand painted' them in photo shop to give them a little life. Sloppy work on
the

hand painting if I say so myself.

Got a call from Pentax repairs today - no can do regarding the A* 200 repair.
Parts are not available. What's the emoticon for angst?

I'm probably speaking from sheer ignorance here, but it seems like the
mechanical stuff inside even the best lens could be fabricated... Anyone know
of
any camera repair shops that might actually entertain an idea like that?

Re: Grab a Drop

2011-06-16 Thread Mark Cassino
You certainly caught a very interesting moment - I've never heard of insects
grabbing drops of dew. Your timing was spot on. When I was trying out lens
options the other night I spent a lot of time chasing these very small mantid
nymphs that were runnign around in the garden. Dozens of exposures and not one
clear shot. I know how it feels to dump a memory card only to find NADA...

Good luck with the competition!

Thank you, Mark.  It's one of my favorite shots I've taken to date.  I did some
looking around on Google Images to see what I could find yesterday, and I'm
inclined to go with your call as the longhorn grasshopper.  The katydids I saw
didn't quite have antennae that long.

It was interesting watching the little guy as I was shooting.  When I saw him
reach down for the water droplet, I was SURE I missed it, and was really
excited
when I got in and loaded it onto the computer.  I was utterly convinced that
I'd
somehow blown the shot, and almost dreaded looking.

I kept watching him after I hit the shutter, and it was so cool to watch him --
he used the water droplet to rinse off his antennae (or maybe that's a way of
hydrating?).

Thanks for the kind thoughts on my parents and the input on the photo.  I'm
anxious to see how it'll be received in the photo competition.

 Hi all,

Stepping briefly back out of obscurity to share a photo I took this morning.
Sorry I haven't been around to participate.  Ever since I got home from my

the
worse.  She's currently in hospice care, and it's fallen to me to look after
her.  She's in fairly grave condition - to the point where she's taking
morphine
in both pill and liquid form, and I have to stay on top of that.  And, as if
that weren't enough, my father has suddenly taken ill with heart problems --
both of them spent about ten days in the hospital at the same time recently.
So, essentially, my photography is limited to what I can find in my yard.

A couple of weeks ago, I order a reversing ring and have been tinkering
around
with my K 50/1.4.  So far, this is the best shot I've managed to get with
 it.
Basically, it's shot with my K-x using the pop-up flash and a Fuji film

with some wax paper lining the inside as a diffuser, at 400 ISO for 1/180 of
second.  (It's a grasshopper-like insect, in case anyone is squeamish about

show
it off because I was really happy with the way it turned out.  I wish I could
participate in the forum, or even seriously pursue photography at all right

but it's just tough to get serious with it in my current situation.  With any
luck, though, hospice will help to get my mother a little more stabilized and
I'll be able to get out and trudge around with the camera a bit more.

Anyway -- that's the news from Kentucky.  I write and take photos when I can,

Thanks, Boris! I started out thinking that I had to have that 200mm macro, and
was surprized ot see that alternatives have been sitting in the bag all along.
It's a good reminder to explore what you can get out of your gear.

Though, I am still hoping that Pentax will be able to fix the 200mm. They've
had the lens since last Friday, so hopefully news will be coming soon...

D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter

2011-06-14 Thread Mark Cassino
This weekend I tested out the D-FA 100mm macro combined with a Kiron MC-7 2x
teleconverter and also combined with a Pentax 1.7x AF adapter as alternatives
to
a 200mm macro lens. The combo with the Kiron was OK, but not great. However, I
was really impressed with the results with the 1.7x converter. Here's one test
shot of a dragonfly who was pawing around on a sandy hill a pine barrens:

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP2671.jpg

Cropped to actual pixels to see the detail in the eyes - and the injury to its
right eye:

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP2671_cr.jpg

A Bee Hunter:

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP2745.jpg

Actual pixel crop of its compound eyes:

http://www.markcassino.com/temp/pdml/IMGP2745_cr.jpg

I used the 1.7x adapter only as a teleconverter, with AF turned off. Having a
modest degree of af functionality might be useful also.

Shots with the Kiron really lacked in sharp edge definition, though were not as
bad as I was expecting. Some samples can be seen in a blog post here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/

or here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/the-blackthorn-wand

I'm pretty satisfied with the 1.7x telelconverter - though I still hope to hear

Re: D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter

2011-06-14 Thread Mark Cassino
Those first two shots - the backlit hairs - are really cool, Igor.

I have not used any stacked DOF software on these shots. The insect shots are
hand held with the camera on just a monopod - between my motion and the
movement
of the bugs, I don't think that I could get enough shots to stack. SOmeone
recommended the DOF stacking software for snow flakes last spring, too late to
try it, but it's on my project list for next winter...

Very impressive, Mark!

I like the DOF. Did you do anything special for it?
You didn't do focal-HDR, did you?

I tried to play with the same combination of lenses a few times, and
my results were acceptable but not as good.
My biggest struggle was the DOF, even with the aperture closed down.
(I posted those attempts to PDML a while ago:
http://science.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9527.jpg
http://science.komkon.org/~igor/PHOTOS/Raspberries/IMGP9503.jpg )

The DOF became incredibly shallow (and the sharpness went down) when
I stacked 2.0x with the 1.7x (and still with the same DFA-100/2.8 macro):

I used the 1.7x adapter only as a teleconverter, with AF turned off. Having a
modest degree of af functionality might be useful also.

Shots with the Kiron really lacked in sharp edge definition, though were not
as
bad as I was expecting. Some samples can be seen in a blog post here:

I'm pretty satisfied with the 1.7x telelconverter - though I still hope to

Re: D-FA 100mm Macro Plus Teleconverter

2011-06-14 Thread Mark Cassino
Hi Steve -

I tried the DFA 100 and the 1.7x converter in the field with no prior tests or
measurements, but I just did a crude test. Without the converter on the lens, I
set it to 1:1 (minimum focusing distance) and focused on a ruler. I could see
23mm marked on the ruler through the finder. The measured distance from the
front of the lens was ~5 inches. I then put on the 1.7x TC and moved the camera
around till it was focused on the ruler and again showed 23 mm. Now the working
distance was ~8 inches. (In both cases I measured the working distance as from
the front of the lens to the subject - no hood.)

In theory, the working distance should have been 8.5 inches with the TC on. The
converter itself adds about  an inch to the length of the lens though, and 1/2
inch is probably within the margin of error for my measurements. So, it looks
like the converter is increasing the working distance for by 1.7x, as it
should,
but is taking back the inch it adds to the length of the lens.
As for the focus position of the elements - I had not considered that. I just
did a quick test on that too, though. I coaxed the converter to its farthest
setting (infinity focus) and then set the lens to 1.5x lifesized and measured
the focus distance. I then repeated with the converter at its nearest setting.
There seemed to be about 1 inch difference in the focus distance between the
two
settings. But doing that - I realize that you would really have to control for
magnification. My guess is that is all comes out in the wash - with the
converter set to its closest focus you can get closer, but get greater
magnification.
thinking about it - both the converter and the lens add extension to focus
closer. Extension added by the converter is added behind the converter.
Extension added by the lens is added before the converter. I have  a book here
that talks about adding tubes in front of or behind a converter and the
difference between them. That's the same issue. I'll look that up... but not
tonight.

very nice practical experiment; i also have a 1.7x AF TC; i tried it with my
Sigma 105mm, and found the quality pretty good, and if i stick to 1:1 it seems
to somewhat increase the working distance, but at maximum magnification
(nominally 1.7:1) the working distance is back down to the 4 or so of the
105mm
alone; did you get better working distance with your test? (wasn't that one of
your main concerns?)

i also noticed the 1.7x leaves it's optics focused to wherever one left it
when AF was turned off; my guess would be that for macro one should prefocus it
to it's shortest focus then switch to MF, but i wasn't in a position to test
this carefully -- any thoughts?

A shame, Mark, the A 200 was your money lens.  I hope they can restore it.

I agree with Mark Roberts, the Sigma 180 is a very good lens, sharp and an
interesting bokeh.  Mine did break after about a year and a half, the
aperture quit working. Sigma was able to repair it, and it works fine still.
If their 150 is comparable, it would be a worthy replacement. But let's hope
you wont need to.

fwiw, my Sigma EX 105/2.8 macro (pre DG version) has working room of about 4

least an inch); however i often work at less than magnification than 1:1; at

still i like it very much, but i don't have much basis for comparison; it's

I also have the Vivitar Series 1 105mm but tend to use Sigma a lot more...
Working distance considerations do not usually apply for my type of
casual shooting and I believe I will not need a longer macro.

You may also consider using software tools for stacking multiple

These may allow you use any macro lens available (of shorter focal length).

Mark, if you get to buy a Sigma, I will be most curious to know how you'd
compare the color rendering of both lenses. Initially I did not notice it, but
Tamron 28-75 and Sigma 24-60 yield different colors - Tamron being the warmer
and Sigma being a bit odd for I lack words to describe it in a way that would
make sense. The best I can do is say that it seems to eat up a bit of yellow
and
that general aspect of rendering is a bit lifeless. Not terribly so, but
still... May be since introduction of Sigma 24-60 they did improve on their
coatings a fair bit, I don't know but I'd certain want to hear your opinion on
the matter if and when you get a Sigma.

magnification is only about .65 life-size. I plan on trying the D-FA 100 with
a  teleconverter this weekend, but am not optimistic.

Any thoughts on the Sigma 150 or other options that might be out there?

 Thanks -

Sigma 150mm macro lens

2011-06-09 Thread Mark Cassino
Hi Everyone -

It finally happened - my trusty old SMC A* 200mm macro developed a problem this
past weekend, and there is clearly an issue in the linkage between the arm that
controls the aperture and the aperture mechanism itself. I sent it off to
Pentax

in hopes that they can get it fixed up, and hopefully they can. But I may as
well do some contingency planning as I await to hear form them...

The only viable option I see out there now is the Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro. Has
anyone tried this lens? They state that it has a minimum focusing distance of
15

inches which is 1:1 magnification. So, minus the length of the lens (5 inches)
it looks like there would be about 10 inches of working room. That's not bad -
the 200mm macro hit about 12 inches of working room at 1:1. The D-FA 100 only
has about 6 inches.

Any thoughts about other options? The Sigma 180mm macro is long gone and the A*
and FA* 200 macros are impossible to find. I just started playing around with
my
A*

300 f4 and a Canon 500D multi element close up lens - the first test were
surprisingly sharp, but the range you can focus in is very small and the
maximum

magnification is only about .65 life-size. I plan on trying the D-FA 100 with
a  teleconverter this weekend, but am not optimistic.

Any thoughts on the Sigma 150 or other options that might be out there?

Thanks -

Wow! Daniel - pass my tanks on to your wife, I hope she is able to find a

Thanks too to Paul Stenquist for telling me about the discussion of the book
here. I started a new day-job 6 months ago and after almost 10 years of
freelancing and part-timing I'm still a bit freaked out about getting up and
going somewhere every day. Well - 'somewhere' as in not the woods or prairie or
savannah... Anyhow, I've not been active on the list for a while...

the Story of Snow has been off to a great start - it was a Junoir Library Guild
Selctiion a couple of months ago, the New York Public Library included it in
their '100 titles for reading and Sharing', the Bulletin of the Center of
Children's Books is putting it on the cover of their Decmebr issue and the
nation Science Teacher's Association included it in their list of 2010
Outstanding Science Trade Books. Not bad for the first 6 weeks in print!

Last night I set up a website / blog for the book which can be cound here -
www.storyofsnow.com I pulled in some posts that had been on my perosnal blog
and added some new ones. I hope to keep things up to date there! And folks
interested in BW urban landscapes might want to check out the link to Gary

Let me preface this by saying that if I had just bought a K-7 and
noticed this I'd be disturbed, if not angry.  However in a lot of the

normal circumstances with a good exposure, not trying every Photoshop
trick to wring a bit more shadow detail out of an image, you might never
see this.

P.J. -

It is a fiarly subtle problem, and I do wonder if it would show up in prints.
On the other hand - knowing it's there will drive me crazy.

Here's a similar crop from the frame before the one I posted yesterday -
straight from the raw file with no adjustments. It's still pretty visible, at
