Re: GESO, and a zine

2020-07-14 Thread Juan Buhler
Thanks Stan!

It is a really interesting process, and satisfying from begin to end.
Forces you to select the images, sort them in a way that is at least
pleasant, and commit to it. Having tangible results is also great, there's
a difference versus say making a web site, since on the web there's the
feeling that you can change things at any time.

Wow, sorry to hear about the flooding! Sounds like a tough time. 2020 has
been a terrible year hasn't it? We have a seven month old baby girl, if it
wasn't for her I'd consider 2020 a total waste.

Re: GESO, and a zine

2020-07-14 Thread Stanley Halpin
Juan, interesting idea! I ordered a copy to see what the product looks like,
feels like…
I followed your blog during your expedition, and am glad to see a few images
from that time.

We have been able to travel quite a bit. Once the covid-19 shutdowns forced
cancellation of our plans for this year, I settled in to do a few blurb books
of photos from our travels. Then our house was flooded (27” water throughout)
and I have spent the last 8 weeks working on recovery. At this point there is
little more i can do other than wait for contractor estimates so I can see
whether or not the house can be saved, and was about to start back to work on
my blurb projects. I had been working with a notion of one “chapter” per
destination, 4-6 pages, 10-15, sometimes 20 images per chapter. Your zine
approach has me thinking of alternatives…

I know I'd like people to have them, just wondering where the happy medium

What did you plan to do with the 50 copies you had printed if you hadn't thought
about selling them?

I'd like to have one. It would make a nice addition to my coffee table ... if I
ever get caught up enough on home repairs that I can reclaim my living room

... and if the current situation ever gets back to the point it's safe to have
visitors come over for coffee.

I haven’t looked at the pictures yet, but I will do.

I like the format.

There’s a guy over here who publishes similar small format collections of
classic British documentary photography under the name Cafe Royal Books.

https://www.caferoyalbooks.com/.

https://instagram.com/caferoyalbooks?igshid=1bden0ltmpttb

He sells them for £6 individually or in discounted bundles, and occasionally
gives away bundles free. He is generating good reviews, and the one I have is
good quality, as you’ve described yours.

I would buy more but they are snackish and I would not know where to put them
all. I might buy his recent release of Manchester in the 70s since I was a
student there at the time.

I think you could probably sell yours on a similar basis.

Re: GESO, and a zine

2020-07-11 Thread Juan Buhler
Haha, I know it was a term for ever, and I used to subscribe to a sci-fi
'zine that was issued in floppy disk in Argentina back in the 80s. It's
just that nowadays it seems like all the kids are making photo 'zines.

I printed it with https://mixam.com/ . Blurb has an easy to use app to make
whatever it is you want to print, and their quality is good, but they don't
print in landscape format. Mixam requires you to upload a print-ready PDF
but they have lots more sizes and aspect ratios. My final cost was maybe $2
per copy.

Driving to Argentina is great and I would love to do it again. We had
planned to take about a year, but in the end took two. Our blog from that
time is still up btw: http://www.vanenvan.com/

Thanks for looking,

Heh! Sci fi fandom has had zines longer than I’ve been alive. I guess the
term is finally catching on with the “mundanes”. :-)

Very nice. I don’t know which to be more envious of, the road trip or the
photos.

Possibly the chance to dance tango in BA. These days I miss the chance to
dance anyplace.

I’m very interested in the details of getting them done up.I’d love to have
something like this for showing off my work, especially since the nearest
costco photo lab these days is 40 miles away.

GESO, and a zine

2020-07-11 Thread Juan Buhler
Hi all,

I recently printed a little magazine with photos, a "zine" like kids these
days call them.

Here is a link, click on the photo to see the whole collection of images
included in the zine:

https://juanbuhler.com/zine

I printed 50 of these, and I want to make new ones a few times per year.
But now I am wondering what to do with them. Should I sell them? I am not
really interested in making money off these, but I suppose I should charge
maybe $5 or $6 to make up my costs at least.

Interested to hear your thoughts on this--would you want to get a copy? The
print quality is nice, not quite as good as a book, but nicer than a
magazine. Think of it as a little photographic snack, quick to browse, easy
to digest. Anyway.

Many of the photos in there were made with a K5, a K3, and perhaps even
with a K-01. Couple of Canon cameras and a few Leicas thrown in as well,
but hey, nobody is perfect.
