Jostein,
There is a poem that is very important for you to learn before your
California trip.
Leaves of three, let it be.

Make sure that you know how to recognize poison oak. This is a special
time of year for poison oak. Some of it is turning a very lovely bright
red. Some of it has lost its leaves. The leaves have had all summer to
secrete and collect urushiol, that marvelous oil that most people are
allergic to.

Thanks Bob!

Wrt. the coastline I'll have to consider the time towards the end of the

who knows. Maybe I grow tired of them sooner than I expect... :-)

Jostein,
Your pictures are really wonderful and the geography excellent.
I envy the trips you are making along with your photos.
I'm sure you'll have a great time in California.
The coastline south of Carmel is dramatic, but I enjoyed the drive
up from Santa Cruz to Half Moon Bay and San Francisco about as much.
The part of hwy #1 that I enjoyed the most is north of SF - from Point
Reyes to the redwoods.

Driving one through the Yosemite area doesn't suck, either.

Or along the Kankamagus Highway in the White Mountains, or
around the Utah canyons, or ...

I haven't made it to the Blue Ridge Parkway yet, but one of
these years I'll check that one off, too.

Colorado National Monument is lovely - I happened to be near there in
2001 (driving out west in the fall on the way to the Grand Canyon for a
Scrabble tourney). Was near there just about the time I needed to get

a campsite and there were wonderful late afternoon vistas... it's small
by western standards but really neat.

the claim i'm more familiar with is "highest continuous paved road" — it
connects Grand Lake to Estes Park - there aren't many guard rails, but
it is well maintained and traffic is not fast, so i find tourists (on
foot & driving) the biggest hazard in good conditions; interestingly,
this 12000 foot pass was the only one of three roads into Estes Park
that wasn't closed by September's catastrophic floods

Trail Ridge is a gorgeous drive and when combined with Rocky Mountain
National Park and Estes Park is perhaps the most well-rounded outdoor
destination in Colorado; but if you want a Colorado "sports car" drive i
would recommend Colorado National Monument, an underrated area almost on
the order of Canyonlands with a great through-road along the canyon edges

Coming _back down_ from the Bristlecones with a snowy and icy road and
being in the passenger seat instead of being in control was one of the
most nail biting driving experiences of my travels with Richard...
slightly uncomforatble indeed!

Both Lone Pine and Big Pine were fun little towns along 395.

I won't be driving Hwy 1 through Big Sur until tomorrow.
Plans for today are to make it to Moro bay by sunset, spending most
of the afternoon in the M.B. / Atascadero region.

Sounds nice. I have a grueling 10 mile drive to get to an ocean
beach from my house in the Redwoods. I have to settle for a river in
my back yard.

I found Tioga to be less terrifying than the Bristlecone drive (but then
I did it in mid summer and I was driving an agile little car) that being
said, the car overheated and we had to give it a rest - it wasnt scary
but I was riding the breaks a lot.

surroundings - a real inspiration and if you like this sort of thing on

Envy you, Jostein. I know you'll hit it hard and I'm sure a lot of the results
will be satisfying..
You've listed about everything you should for the area. You're a bit late for
peak fall colors, but there is so much else I don't think you'll
miss it.
So much of that area is at high elevations, so am hoping winter conditions
aren't a part of your experience. Carry chains in your rental car. They can be
very expensive if you have to buy them have them installed by a chain monkey.

Re: Gearing up for California

2013-10-21 Thread Ann Sanfedele

Devil's postpile overated...

You may well be out of luck for the Bristlecones this year judging from
what I've been seeing on Weather channel, but Death Valley will be a
treat and San Francisco can't be beat as a city - even though you might
have to endure the company of a number of Pentaxians :-)

I'm so jealous!

The statistics from previous years indicate the 120 will stay open for
at least another week from now. Fortunately. :-)

The roads into the wilderness are more of a gamble. The one to Devil's
Postpile, for example, seems to close as I get there:

http://www.nps.gov/depo/planyourvisit/hours.htm

But I'm sure there's plenty to see with a bit of improvising along the
way too. Sometimes it's much more fun to shoot the landscapes that
people don't consider "iconic". And sometimes even simply for that reason.

Be sure to check the road conditions (
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm#CP_JUMP_106631) for
the
road from Yosimite to Lee Vining (route 120) as it closes for the winter
when the snow level gets unmanageable.

Also make sure you stop at the gas station at the intersection of 120 and
395 - it has to be experienced to be believed!

Enjoy!

What worries me more is actually that some of the most interesting roads
close for the winter at some point around the time I get there. I've been
unable to find any fixed dates for closures, so I guess it depends on
local weather conditions.

checking (http://www.dot.ca.gov/hq/roadinfo/clsdlst.htm) shows scheduled
closing of route 120 for Dec 17, barring earlier closure for snow.

I'm no stranger to snowy roads. I've looked briefly into buying snow
chains, and got the impression that cheap ones would be easier to find in
towns closer to the Sierras. I have a set for my own car that goes on and
off in a couple of minutes, and will try to find something with a similar
patent.

Re: Gearing up for California

2013-10-21 Thread Walt Gilbert
I'm envious. I thoroughly enjoyed the brief time I spent in the Bay Area
-- to the point that I didn't really want to come back home.

I still think I could have spent every day of the rest of my life out
there taking photos, and been damned happy doing it.

Even the rental car is booked.

The plans for where to go when include Yosemite for a couple of days
first, and then cross over to Lee Vining for a visit to Bodie, Mono
Lake, and some general goofing around. Then south to Mammoth, and
hopefully some excursion into the Ansel Adams wilderness to see if I
can find some interesting volcanic formations. I know there are some
pretty spectacular basalt columns, and possibly some hot springs and
stuff. After that, I plan to aim for the Bristlecone Pines Park and
eventually down to Death Valley; but that's as far as my planning
goes. Except that I'd really like to stop by to see the sandhill
cranes in San Joaquin County on my way back towards San Francisco.

I'll be landing in San Fran on Sunday 27. Oct, and fly out on Saturday

If any PDML'ers would like to meet up, somewhere in California or
Nevada, give me a ping. :-)

Somehow I don't think winter conditions, even in the Sierras
will give Jostien much pause. For him the biggest winter threat
California has to offer is probably yuppies in SUVs who think that
four wheel drive makes them exempt from the laws of physics.

Heya Jostein,

I live about 40 minutes south of SFO by the main road (Hwy 101) in Santa
Clara. Depending the specifics of whom else might want to get together in
this area, I will arrange time to meet when you're in the area here. I'll
send you my mobile phone number so we can coordinate better.

Definitely. I live near Santa Cruz, about 110 km south of San Francisco.
You will be showing up just as I finish a week off from work. I work in
Santa Clara, just a few km from where Godders lives.

If you need/want crash space in the Santa Cruz area, let me know,
we have a couple of spare guest beds at the Temple of deffered
maintanence. The amenities are a little rough, but it is nice
having our own redwood grove.
