Re: O! Canada!
In Costa Rica a few years ago, went with a small group on a tour of a coffee producers’ plantation & processing facility. Our host knew the people, I think his wife had a distant cousin who was a part owner, so it was a bit more informal than a typical tourist group. Our guide had nothing good to say about Starbucks and their push to buy cheap beans, favoring price and quantity over quality. stan > On Apr 14, 2016, at 12:38 PM, Johnwrote: > > That's the problem with Starbucks. That's the problem with Starbucks. They make their coffee so a little bit of coffee taste comes through all the whatever it is people put in it. Makes it too strong and over-brewed for people who just want coffee. On 4/14/2016 11:20 AM, David J Brooks wrote: Daughter asked us out for breaky last Sat at a "trendy" dinner in Uxbridge. There are a lot of places that had good coffee who are making the mistake of trying to make their coffee taste like Starbucks. Re: OT: O, Canada!
Tim Horton's is now owned by Burger King. I suspect the one in New Jersey is not quite the same thing as they are in Canada. It should do fine. Krispy Kreme is going strong, and they still make their donuts on site. Most places you can stand at the window and WATCH the donuts as they move through the fryer. You just have to keep an eye open for when the "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign is lit up. Dunkin Donuts doesn't make their donuts on site any more. They're made in some factory up there in yankeeland and frozen before being shipped to the local franchises. All the Dunkin Donuts franchises around here have had to merge with Baskin Robbins. The ones that just sold Dunkin Donuts folded & went out of business. On 4/12/2016 2:36 PM, P.J. O! Canada!
I live in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada, San Mateo in the Bay Area, California and my native Bangalore, India. So I am quite comfortable with Chains like Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Lavazza, Dunkin Donuts or Canada's Tim Hortons. The first time I tried a box of assorted Tim Bits at Horton's (actually donut centre cutouts) it was like OK. A 2nd & 3rd time, a big no no. Their coffee is insipid, not soul stirring like Starbucks or Lavazza's. Of course the prices are cheap and the place always full, so maybe there is something good going for them. But hey, Canadians are a lot different from materialistic / individualistic Americans, so they get by with the simpler things in life. Maybe they are a bit happier and friendlier too. How can I say this with 120% certainty without sounding gross or Mr. Opinionated? Well friends being a Non Resident Indian (NRI, working abroad - the US, Scotland, Middle East, North Africa, the CIS, with regular assignments in Japan, Korea, Europe) I have had to live on Coffee Houses or fish & chip joints. O Canada Exhibit in Toronto
Derby's post about Magnum prints reminded me that I recently saw a wonderful exhibit, O Canada at Toronto's Stephen Bulger Gallery on Queen Street West. It featured dozens of vintage prints from Bulger's personal collection, generally themed around (as you might guess) Canadian themes. Surprisingly, there was even an Henri Cartier Bresson print! (priced at a modest $7500, IIRC - and that's Canadian funds!) http://www.bulgergallery.com/dynamic/fr_exhibit_artist.asp?ExhibitID=208 If you're in Toronto over the next month (runs to February 27) I highly recommend it. I'm lucky enough to live about two blocks from that gallery, so I'll be seeing it several more times. cheers, frank -- Sharpness is a bourgeois concept. -Henri Cartier-Bresson -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
